Teleport to friend.
Crystal Desert
Well if you used more than two until you noticed you should also be ashamed of yourself ^^ Did you actually get teleported to DS, only another ID? Or where you already in DS when you teleported?
In my eyes it is a tool to travel great distances where you have no waypoint so far, get to the end of jumping puzzles or travel with new toon you got to 80 with books. It surely isn’t your way to “break into” full meta-event maps.
If you didn’t have a waypoint in DS it was bad luck that it didn’t even bring you to another ID, but if you had why not simply go there and “Join DS” on the profile of your groupmate?

I think it’s lame that they work like this. I wish they’d check if the map was full before moving you, then giving you the option to stay or go once it determines if you can get into the map or not.
I get why they work the way they do. You teleport to your friend’s location, and if the map is full, they can just join your copy of the map. There’s no promise that the teleport will take you into their instance, and if it’s full, it shouldn’t do that. It makes perfect sense on paper.
Edit: It sounds like they don’t move you at all if you can’t get into the map, rather than sending you to another instance of the map? Okay, that’s just dumb. If it’s going to use a charge, it should at least send you to another map, so your friend can join you in the new map. [/edit]
I don’t think people think of it like that, however, and they’re disappointed when it doesn’t work out in map-critical circumstances. Disappointed customers aren’t a good thing, regardless of what the customer’s expectations were.

It’s been like that for a while. I lost one the other day when I tried to teleport to someone. It should at least send you to that map, same location but another shard. At least you’ll then have the options for your friend to join you or you to try to join your friend through join on map on the party panel. It’s very annoying to lose one of these items when you click on it and not move from where you are.
ANet may give it to you.
At the end of the day, its no big deal but man is it lame. Starfall your right, it is MY fault just not paying attention because the teleport sent me nowhere iother than where I was standing. And yes, I have all the WPs in DS. Sent me nowhere but still burnt the TTF.

That sucks that it didn’t even move you, but like I said it surely isn’t an item that can break you into a full map. It would have been kind of an exploit if it worked for you.

It shouldn’t push you into a full map, but at the least it should either teleport you (so your friend can join you) or leave you where you are without using your item. You can argue a case for either of those, but the current result isn’t what anyone wants or expects to happen.
If it doesn’t move you, it totally shouldn’t consume the charge.

Hot fix inc!
The Join a Friend teleport stone has be renamed to Sometimes Join a Friend.

This. I used one months ago on an alt for teq, and expected if the map was full, at least I’d end up in a different one… Nope, item consumed and my character was not moved. Several players have reported this over months, but nothing has been changed.

True.
And there’s your answer to your question in your thread, why do people buy these?
1) they can afford to
2) they’re not unhappy with the rewards in them.

It’s a bug. Needs fixed.
I generally play solo, but this item bugs the crap out of me. Why make teleport to a friend require a consumable that you can’t craft in game and must obtain from the store or drop in the first place? That is terribad design in my opinion. If you’re lucky enough to have friends online and want to play with them it should be made as easy as possible to get together. It just makes for a better game in general to let players get together quickly. If Anet doesn’t want to make it a standard ability you unlock at a certain level (what they should have done in the first place), then at least make it a money sink consumable you can buy at a vendor once you are a certain level.

Because it allows you to cheese content so they made them hard to get RNG. I hadn’t used one before till HoT though since some places are hard to get to without them.
It’s not necessarily a bug, but probably even ANet agrees: it should be tweaked. However, it seems unlikely that it would be trivial to do so, which is probably why it hasn’t been changed …yet.
What they could do is offer a warning or suggestion when it’s used:
You will use up a charge without changing maps, if the destination instance is full. We recommend that you try to enter the map first, if possible, and then use the item.
I wonder if it would be possible to have the item try a “join” first, and abort without consuming the item if the map change fails.
Which do we think would be a better solution:
1) Don’t move or consume the item if the map if the map is full.(item not wasted)
or
2) Move to the same spot on a map that isn’t full.(friend can join you instead)

In my opinion, the “better” solution would be whichever ANet could rollout sooner. For how I’ve used it so far, I’d prefer the second solution (I’d rather get to where I wanted to go and worry about joining my party after) — and that might also turn out to be easier to implement.
Valid complaint ihmo.
The invalidation should also result in non-use of the consumable.
It’s crazy that it consumes the item. Surely that is easy to fix.
On the same theme, why does the LFG tool let you join a party in a full map when you cannot go to that map?
I’ve been locked out of the LFG tool due to joining “too many parties” but each of those parties were ones I joined and then could not get into the map with.
Happened to me too, would be nice to get the consumable back. Until then I will try joining the map first before porting to friend.
This map system is really annoying tbh. Map Wars FTW!

Because a large part of they game’s content revolves around personally exploring to unlock waypoints, reach chests, and otherwise get yourself to certain places. I’m still amazed the haven’t nerfed mesmer portals TBH.
The low RNG of these items is by design. They’re not something anet wants people to be using all the time as it kills a large part of their content, the same as boosters and other such things. It’s not something you’re really intended to me using all the time, but only occasionally.

I have a stack of them from my old key farming days. They’re great.
I can use them like really long range mesmer ports and get to any difficult to reach areas so long as I have a friend there (i.e. anyone I invite to a party). Has saved me a lot of jumping and gliding in HoT map areas already.
Well if you used more than two until you noticed you should also be ashamed of yourself ^^
Or you for moralizing a stranger person for something like that.

Why do you sound so sure about it? Was there some kind of official statement on that?
To me it looks like lazy programming or something. To quickly bump up chest demand back then, when these teleports were introduced.
Just coding a simple action “do this, and that” without any serious conditioning, for example to preserve the item when it wasn’t used “successfully”.

Yeah, I’ve been playing since beta and have 7 lvl 80’s that were all leveled from 1-80. 4 of them have full 100% map complete and story complete (except HoT). I know how the maps work and how they are content gated. I fully understand the progression having done it on so many characters.
To all of which I reply – so what? So what if someone wants to “bypass” the hard parts of the map by having a friend help them “cheese” through everything? If someone wants to short-cut their own exploration and story experience by having a friend teleport them to every waypoint, poi, and portal (which would be a serious undertaking and pretty boring), what do I care? They are only “cheating” themselves after all. A person who didn’t earn it gets to share my little world exploration star next to their name but still doesn’t know much about the game itself is supposed to upset me? Not really.
The game is already too time consuming to transverse most maps, even if you could jump to every spot (which is not possible since a lot are contested with dynamic events). Especially on a char that doesn’t have a speed passive.
If I had a friend join tomorrow, I’d love to be able to get to him or her at any time. If they were in trouble I would love to be able to come to their aid. The stones don’t let you teleport into an instance or dungeon so that solves most issues. Make it not usable next to puzzle treasure chests if that is a concern, but otherwise let people together quickly. Without mounts you are still hoofing it on foot for the most part anyway, even if you get together quickly.
Yes please, this bothers me a lot too. It just seems to be bad design. I’ve never had it happen to me, but I’m always worried when using one of these. This has been discussed for a long time.
Over the years of buying BL chests, I had accrued 50+ of these wonderful things. But there is a HUGE problem with them.
In trying to join guildies in DS I would pop one and the screen would say map is full. So I would wait a minute and retry. Little did I know that it USED the teleport. I have no problems with the map being full, but using up an invaluable charge is inexcusable.
Really anet, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
You should be ashamed of yourself for using them multiple times on a full map. Taxi the way normal people do and save yourself trouble. It says right on it that it’s consumed once it’s used.

I think you may need to re-read that post. You seem to have misunderstood it.
The low RNG acquisition of the items is by design.
The fact that they get used up and don’t actually teleport you anywhere is obviously a bug.
