Temple of Grenth has become a jerk magnet
There’s always one person in particular who takes it upon themselves to champion the notion of what all ‘good’ players must do in that event. And they’re always the most belittling, abusive, egotistical little goblins society has to offer.
I’ve learned to make liberal use of the ignore feature. Once you know how the event works, it makes the whole thing a lot more peaceful.
ArenaNet is very strict when it comes to verbal abuse. If you see any player doing that, just right click and report and they will be dealt with.

And if they’re real abusive, swearing and the like, right click the name and report. I do not hesitate in that.

Trust me, I do. However, it seems that there are so many of these obnoxious people that reporting seems sisyphusian.

For some reason, that thought never occurred to me. I have something new to try.

I hate the Temple of Grenth because it’s become a jerk magnet. Players get abusive if you don’t fail the temple defense event. Then they get abusive when players don’t play the assault correctly. It’s a no win situation for civilized players.
That’s all thanks to their “innovative” trait acquisition system…
The only reason people need the event to fail is so they can acquire the grandmaster trait that requires you to complete the event that happens upon the said event failing.
Even if you are not involved, map chat is filled with angry posts each time the event fails.
It’s a challenging event. It’s also a very frustrating event. If it wasn’t required for a Grandmaster trait, then I don’t think it would be as much of a problem because few people are doing it for the challenge right now.
But I’m pretty sure you can get the trait from the defense event as well, I’d swear I got at least one that way :/
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
Is there someplace that specifies how the Grenth event should go down? I’ve done the temple many times before megaserver when my guildies would get it to the “easy” part. I have tried many times since but get insta-killed by shades. Tried running through brown circles but that seems to work few times. I would really like to know how to do it properly.

I do believe they patched it to allow this to work, yes. People only clamor for it to fail because of the “loot phase” that the Grenth temple goes through, if you’re claiming it. And the big chest, but I only ever hear people hoot for the loot phase.
You can get the trait unlock from defense – I’ve done it. However the big chest only comes from the capture.
Sorry given the title of the thread I couldn’t resist this Seinfeld reference.
I found that the worst part isn’t just the way people scream and yell at others, but the fact that they don’t actually even give advice either.
When I needed to unlock the trait for my Elementatlist, I’d never done the event before in my life. Not that I’m a new player or anything, I’ve got 5 level 80’s and have done most of the events in the various Orr zones, but Grenth was one I’d just never gotten around to doing.
Anyway, as I was standing around, saw the defense event pop up and mentioned it in map chat since no one else was there, people screamed and said “no, let it fail for loot” so fine, I left and did Arah instead which happened to be going on at the same time. After Grenth defense failed and the assault event finally started up and everyone was dying like flies, the only “advice” given was “waypoint when you die morons” (not everyone was being a jerk about it, some were nice, but it was still all the advice given, waypoint when you die and it’ll complete eventually).
Only AFTER the event succeeded and I had time to actually ask “So what are the actual mechanics of the fight anyway, you can’t be intended to die 10 times and waypoint to beat it” did anyone mention “Oh, yah, you’re supposed to stand in some sort of glowing pool to get a buff and kill the shades. And the shades are insta-kill if they hit you.” Well, gee, that would have been nice to know during the fight. Perhaps someone could have mentioned that instead of a dozen people all repeating “waypoint when you die”.

Thanks for the laughs!
I just wonder why Anet designed the events so that succeeding in defense has much lower rewards than succeeding in attack. That right there is a recipe for disaster.
Heh, by you guys following those self-proclaimed commanders and their game-trivializing trains, you further encourage this behavior. You kill the trains, you just might reduce this kind of behavior.
Or you can do what I do and play the game however you want, other players be dammed.
