Tengu didn't make it
I was also kinda hoping for the tengu to be included but I think they made the right choice by not including them in the end. The tengu do not fit the direction the story is currently taking.
If I would have to guess I’d say that the tengu will play a bigger role only when one the following happens in the story:
1. Primordus becomes more important, because we know the tengu have destroyer problems.
2. The Deep Sea dragon becomes more important, because the tengu are close to sea.
3. Cantha plays a role in the story, because the tengu obviously have a strong connection with Cantha.
When is the Tengu going to be released. In a living world update after/before Heart of Thorns or in the next expansion?
Tengu is impossible to release to the current story campaign, any attempt to do so would be a waste of resources and would probably result in failure.
Tengu are the new Mounts.
Tengu will very likely emerge from their city when we go after Primordius. The Destroyers have been at their wall for over 2 years now. They will need our help if they are to survive. When will we go after Primordius? That is a story for another time, humans, plants, giants, cats and gnomes .

1. The tengu are a proud people.
2. There’s tengu outside the dominion.
3. All you need is an explanation that gets you a Tengu fighting Zhaitan and the Dominion still closed.
This is actually solved easily in lore. Making up the story is easy. The difficult part is making the content to support the story.
At this point you can’t make a story with everything happening on “the present”. No matter how many players keep defeating Zhaitan, in the story it’s already dead. So you just make a story that is on the past from the start.
Here’s one example of a story that explains how we can have a closed Dominion for so long and having a tengu story against Zhaitan at the same time.
- The tengu haven’t been in the Dominion for a long, long time.
- When the tengu city is revealed, it’s somewhere else entirely, and the Dominion is actually overrun by destroyers.
- The player tengu story starts during a destroyer attack to the Dominion. They fight a Megadestroyer, and help people evacuate.
- The tengu had been preparing for this for a long time, after they found and studied a series of ancient asura portals that connect and go through the Depths of Tyria. They used them to evacuate the Dominion to a new location. This was a hard decision the Emperor had to take, and a faction of tengu were against it, and rallied around a General of the tengu armed forces in revolt, becoming the enemy faction composed mainly of descendants of the xenophobe avicara and the aggressive sensali.
- This portals led to a faraway spot to the northwest of the map, in a tall vertical forest with giant trees. The tengu built a city at the top of those trees and called it “New Aerie”. This city is revealed during the living story update or expansion that released the race.
Anything that happens in the story journal before that is considered to have happened before the city is revealed.
- After the player’s first instance in the Ruined Dominion, they start in New Aerie, and their first 2 chapters happen entirely in the city and the starting area.
- During all story chapters until New Aerie is revealed to the public, they keep New Aerie as a secret (The Whispers knew about it, but acted as if they didn’t know) and act as if they were tengu who lived outside for a long time.
- The “present” point will be marked by a story in which the player with the help of his friends from all races convince the Emperor that working together is the best. Having Rytlock ‘summoning’ the memories of Togo and Talon Silverwing talking on behalf of inter-species collabortaion speeded up the process a lot.
- The tengu who killed anyone aproaching the walls when Lion’s Arch was attacked were of the enemy faction, they have been on control of the remants of the domain, fighting destroyers and killing any outsider that wanders in, while trying to repair the asura gates to reach and assault new aerie.
And this way, you add new content that happened in the past without changing the past.
Tengu are the new Mounts.
Tengu are the new food.
Tengu doesn’t make any sense right now story-wise. If you start seeing them dropping hints about Tengu then maybe you can expect it, but certainly not now. I doubt we will see that anytime soon. Maybe the next expansion if you’re lucky.
Personal story, would they just not have access to it? Having to voice act all of that all of the original personal story over again twice (once for each gender) seems like a lotta work.
When is the Tengu going to be released. In a living world update after/before Heart of Thorns or in the next expansion?

Why is it impossible?
Since Revenant channels the powers of ancient Dwarven kings, it only follows that Dwarves will be the next added race.
“Excuse me, those are my powers.”

Technically, haven’t the Sylvari been “at their wall” the whole time too? The Nightmare Court is practically just down the street.
I was super bummed about the exclusion of a new playable race.
I hope we get a LOT of new maps to play around on because while I am really excited about the x-pac, it’s going to feel really thin in the content dept. when compared with Eye of the North if it doesn’t have a lot of maps.
