Ok, so i’ve been killing Tequatl the Sunless (For those who don’t know a major world boss in Sparkfly Fen.) For close to two years now, if there was an ingame kill counter i’m pretty sure i’ve got to be close to like 400 kills on him…and out of the 400 kills (maybe more?) I’ve never seen one ascended drop, we’re not talking the hoard he drops either, but just general armor chests and or weapons, yet everytime I kill this kittening kitten, I see some dude who was afk the practically, the entire time link up either some valuable loot or even worse the sought after hoard. THE WORST PART – You know you contributed way more and probably know Tequatl better then they ever will by the amount of times you’ve sat on him.

And I gotta say, it’s gotten to the point where I’m starting to believe i’m bugged, since i’ve been defeating him since his initial release – maybe, a hidden code or something for those that have been killing him so long, unable to get anything but spoons. Hell, I was destroying him before he even dropped spoons.

SO I have to ask, does anyone feel like this world boss just has them by the privates? Or is it just cruel, cruel RNG?

I saved up 140 of the exotic chests to check and poof 3 hoards 1 other weapon box and a armor box

so i have done Tequatl since you could solo him, I have done that, daily , including today, with a few fails. I have had 8 hordes, and 6 other ascended boxes, including one last week i think.
Do you get a gold reward every 25%? Try maintaining dps through out the entire fight with no fears , try using the ranged double damage spot. participate fully with as much dps and kills in the defense phases. the better you do in all these parameters increase the chance of the coveted horde or an ascended box. "1"ing your way to the end of the encounter ensures you never get the reward you seek. But then again, the win is the reward, you only get the extra bits if ya put your mind to the fight.
This is just IMHO. I have found the days i concentrate on every facet of the encounter, i get the better rewards, like the 14 ascended drops that Tequatl has dropped for me.

I have dodged 85% of all waves, cleansed every fear quickly, never stood in a red circle and participated in every bloody phase for over a year now and all I ever got was the mini. BTW only pressing 1 in battle (close range) with teq is a sure fire way to waypoint ville.

I don’t know what gods I need to play to, but so far swearing at my monitor isn’t working.

Edit: Defiantly a good candidate for a token system. X tokens (spoons) can be traded in for a horde or ascended chest. Even if it took a year, it would be worth it as you would work toward something at least.

I’m a fairly new player. Been playing for just under 2 months now.

A few days ago I did Tequatl, for maybe the 6th or 7th time (not sure exactly, but it was definitely less than 10). And I got Tequatl’s Hoard. Needless to say, I was shocked. Especially since about two days prior I had done the fight, and after we all looted the chest, someone linked Tequatl’s Hoard and said something along the lines of: “Finally, after 3 kittening years he dropped it for me!”.

I was deliriously happy (after the shock wore off) that I got such a rare drop, but at the same time, I couldn’t help thinking about that poor kitten from a couple days ago, and all the other people that might have spent years before getting it (or still never have), and it made me feel very sad for them.

It’s cruel RNG. Most of the days that I get on, I do a Teq run. There are more than a few times that I do it twice a day on different characters. I couldn’t begin to count how many I’ve done. It’s just an event I enjoy. All the achievements were long-ago accomplished.

However, the rarest loot I’ve gotten to date from it was a Shard of the Deep and a couple of Benthic Aquabreathers. Definitely no hoard or ascended chests. Just lots of spoons and runes. I do have a mini Teq, but that’s only because my husband, who has done maybe 20 or 30 Teq runs total took pity on me and gave me one of the multiple Teq minis that he’s gotten. Did I mention he’s also gotten 2 ascended chests? My son, who’s done even fewer Teq runs has gotten 2 ascended weapon drops.

I love Teq, but the Sunless hates me. Around our house, I call him Teh-koodle-poodle. Maybe that’s why he hates me.

I dont’ know how many times you kill per day.

But I think ascended chest mostly drop from the golden chest. So there is no point killing it multiple times a day unless you want karma.

I think it have a chance on dropping from the large chest if you play an alt. But the chance is pretty low anyway.

Personally speaking, when I do it on multiple characters, it’s because I enjoy the fight and gravitate toward different roles & batteries depending on the character. I don’t do the fight for the loot or karma, but because I just honestly enjoy it. I know the timers and if I happen to be free around the event time, chances are good I’m going to be waypointing there.

It’s no longer just about unlucky RNG, but deliberate A-Net nerfs in the form of Diminished Returns affecting multiple map events, less materials from salvaging, less rewards for completing dungeons/fractals, and the list goes on & on. The majority of substantial rewards in GW2 cost real money and/or endless grinding which is unreasonable for many people. Again, we have another major deviation from GW2’s original philosophy.

Having said that, massive reward was never my reason for being devoted to GW2; I felt a strong connection to my characters (I have a level 80 of each profession) and loved the diversity of their combat skills & powers displayed through the former beautiful special effects & artwork… now that all the visual splendor is gone, I don’t have much reason to keep playing because it certainly isn’t because of the poor loot drops.

That’s some cruel RNG there.
Clarifying the difference in loot obtained, would only be even more cruel.
Done a ton of consistant damage and gotten nothing of note, and caught a very late map and tagged Teq a time or two and gotten a hoard.
I’d suggest trying several characters to even out the RNG (if such a thing is possible).

Been doing Tequatl for the past 2 years almost every day. Total of 2 hoards and a couple of random ascended weapons so far.

RNG can just be that cruel. Another example is a warrior build I’m using that has 99% crit with Signet mastery and Fury up (and I do make sure those are up all the time)
I’ve already had 2 fights against champions where my attacks did not crit for half the fight.

So I hadn’t fought Teq since the first week of his revamp, decided to try it out about 2 weeks ago to get the mastery point, surprised at how easy it’s organized and done now. Anyways in the first week I got 1 horde and 1 ascended weapon off him, this past week a mini pet. My rng is usually pretty bad, so glad I even got the weapons off him.

I’m playing for almost two years now and I’ve yet to see ANY ascended armor or weapon drop. Tequatl, Triple wurm, Silverwastes, WvW, anything… all my ascended gear is crafted. I’m not leaving toons anywhere, I do everything on my main character (with small exceptions like dungeon running with an ele or JP on mesmer), so it’s not DR for sure. Sometimes I think that I might be bugged, too.

I’m looking at it like this – if someone is really lucky with those, there’s always someone, who will be on the other side of this rng seesaw to keep the overall balance (and that’s you and me, in this case). That’s how it works in any gambling game, they have a certain average number of drops per boss/day/week/month, so practically with every drop someone else gets, you will have a smaller chance to get the same item. Nope. Your real shot at ascended boxes will come from the Exotic grade Dragon Chest which is only one per day per account.

The Fine, Masterwork, Rare grades of Dragon Chest almost certainly won’t give Ascended boxes (although you have an extremely small chance of getting one from the champ bags you get from these chests)

As for the Event Chest (The statue of Tequatl), I’m unclear if one can get an Ascended Chest from that. It is likely that you can since I’ve gotten Ascended Weapon Boxes from the Event Chests of Golem Mark II and Shatterer. However, this rate will be far, far lower than the Exotic grade Dragon Chest.

Finally, I’ve been killing the revamped Tequatl to close to two years myself. My rates have been consistent. 1 Ascended Weapon Box from Tequatl every 2 to 2.5 months. Among them were 5 Tequatl Hoards. The others were random named Ascended Weapon Boxes. I don’t remember getting any from the Event Chest, though I might have. If I did, they wouldn’t be more than one or two.

Finally, if your frustration is with NOT getting any Ascended Boxes, the easiest solution is to just raise your MF to 200% at least, then go sPvP. I kid you not, the rate of Ascended Boxes in sPvP is insane and affected by your MF. I play 99% PvE content, doing only 1 sPvP Conquest match a day.

PvE Ascended Rate: 1 per 2 months.
sPvP Ascended Rate: 2 per 1 month.

There’s no contest. Just go sPvP for your Ascendeds and enjoy the PvE content instead of fretting over loot.

I don’t like world boss fights. My friends dragged me to teq (my second time ever doing it). I ended up getting the ascended staff lol.

I know it was random luck so I will never go back to that fight again lol. I just take what I win and run because i know if i start farming him then my luck will probably never be that good again.

This is a lootless, hopeless fight for me as well. I only just got the mini to drop. I am not a mini person, but I equipped this one just because I was so excited to get something – anything – from this stupid dragon. I’m totally behind a token system for this guy. I don’t need many, just something that feels like it’s worth my time. I do enjoy the fight for it’s own sake, but after many runs, the novelty wears off and the main reason to go back is the hope of good loot. There never is and I might as well have been killing harpies because I can kill a heck of a lot more harpies in the time it takes to kill Teq once.

This means we need to give reasons for players at all levels to explore these areas, to reward them for their time, and to encourage them to play in locations where they will run into each other and experience the community-driven features that make Guild Wars 2 shine.

Once players get what they want, wether it be random or not, they don’t return and go do other things. Something the dev’s never really got. When you finish a map and have done all events, once you’ve gotten your desired ‘loot’ or item, why would you return? for the very low chance of getting something ? I think not.

I think the OP should maybe spend more time fighting and less time watching players to see if they are AFK. Anyhow, now that they’ve made the forum post they are almost guaranteed to get a decent drop in the next few attempts hehe.

I’ve killed him at least 30,000 times and I’ve only just recently gotten 2 ascended weapon boxes from him. I thought it’d never happen. First boss ascended somethingz I’ve ever gotten in PvE.
More-so after armor boxes though~ god it’s so hard to get an armor set w/o crafting. I’ve gotten 2 from PvP and one from Lum Armor chivo and my poor Necros still waiting for 3 more for like half a year+. PvE is super stubborn with drops.

I probably have less than 30 kill, but scored 3 ascended out of that (Claymore of the Sunless, and two ascended weapon boxes from the orange chest). I don’t know you, but at some point in your past, i guess you offended RNGesus.

I have done a lot of Teq farming too. 5 hoards, 3 armor chests and 1 weapon. All I am intrested in though is the hoards.

Maybe you did not kill him at all. Perhaps he just escaped to the deep sea waters when he was about to die… Why give good loot if you did not even kill the monster hmmm?

I believe it took me as many, if not more kills to get my first/only hoard. I also have been killing him since he was out, and I was using alts to kill him multiple times in a day. I still fight him and enjoy the battle, even though it has gotten a lot easier now that we all know it. I honestly don’t know the total number of times I’ve killed him, but I ended up with two stacks of spoons before I eventually sold them for the bank space. Not to mention I didn’t even keep them at first.

The hoard I got actually dropped from the dragon chest. According to the wiki it has a rare chance to drop from the exotic chest as well.

Since then I have gotten 2 more ascended weapon drop chests from the exotic chests.

My point being RNG is the reason, but don’t give up. It will drop eventually.

I think this could be a great place to throw out a system like the magnatite shards from raids. a small number of tokens which give you a slow but guaranteed method of obtaining the loot you want.

Teq has been kind to me, he is the one thing in game that has dropped something nice for me. I have gotten at least 2 or 3 ascended weapons from him including the Hoard chest, and I doubt I have killed him as many times as you so I am guessing just bad rng luck. Also, don’t believe all the links you see, some people get one and like to troll people by constantly linking it at every opportunity.

If it makes you feel any better, my luck is crap everywhere else in the game :/

I haven’t done Teq in a while but the last time I did it, the broken spoon was worth 10 silver. Unless they’ve changed it, it’s still worth 10 silver.

If they have changed the value and wiki is outdated, it’s probably because they added a new gold faucet in the PvE maps, the Shiny Bauble, and the spoon was nerfed to bring gold incoming to an calculated amount.

imo they changed it to a broken spoon because people believed (because of the color) that it replaced an exotic even though it was clearly labeled as a trophy. By changing the color and labeling it as junk it removes that wrong perception.

Earlier this year I took a mate who had his first character at 75ish down to do Teq for his first go at it and he scored a Hoard. He had no idea what it was and wanted to sell it. I laughed for ages.

It’s back in the saddle – So today, I followed the guidelines that Sligh.2789 apparently uses to help him get decent Tequatl rewards and…I got gold mostly everytime and at the end I got a Angchu Ascended Weapon Chest…whether focusing on battery defense helped or not…I cannot say or prove otherwise, however for once Tequatl didn’t give me garbage.

So the real question to now be asked…

IS THERE A SECRET TEQUATL PARTICIPATION METER?

No. There’s not. It was coincidence. It’s rare when I don’t get gold participation on a battery phase or main event, and it hasn’t helped me see an ascended or hoard.

I’ve been doing Teq since the game came out, I’ve gotten nothing but trash.

Been doing it every day for a year now, but I’ve given up. At some point the frustration of not getting the single skin I wanted overcame the enjoyment of doing the event and what rewards I did get.

Not only can I not be bothered to log on to do Teq, I don’t even want to go there if I do happen to be on while it’s happening. RNG has made an otherwise enjoyable and rewarding event unbearable to play. Good design, ANet.
