Hello, Im a new member of the GW2 community as of just last nite.

I had to post in case anyone else is dealing with the problem I myself had throughout last week, which was: Now having a computer capable of playing nice games, I was searching for a new home. It was new and exciting to actually have options on which games to play based on their content, instead of playing the only games in the genre I enjoyed that could run on my machine.

After burning through all the f2p games with feelings ranging from utter boredom (Rift, sorry i played WoW for 2 years…), to awe over graphics followed by awe that a game could attempt to use such beautiful graphics as a crutch for utterly empty, hollow gameplay (tera), to sadness (neverwinter…such an awesome looking/playing world..if only it was actually a social open-world game), I began to search for a P2P game. Long story short, 1 trial and 1 refund for an absolutely unfunctional client later (i wont name names….but heres a hint: The games names start with EVE and end with Wildstar), I was almost ready to accept defeat. Fellow employee/gamers at my job scared me well away from ESO, so I actually came to GW2 as a last resort. It was here that I leared my lesson. I can write pages and pages about how awesome, how different, how beautiful GW2 is, but thats for you to discover. What I AM going to suggest to anyone in this situation…do your research. Dont just read one review and take their word for it. A nice place to look is Wikipedia, for most mmo’s at the bottom it will display game review ratings from a number of big name game-reviewers which allows you to compare and get an overall idea or an average. Here is what I will tell you: Performance wise I still can’t believe what im seeing, this game runs absolutely perfect on my machine which is merely average these days.

I am just really really happy that you tried Wildstar first, hated it, and then came to GW2 and loved it. That just made my day. I’m sick to death hearing about Wowstar, and spiteful because many of my friends quit GW2 to play it.

My friends didn’t stay very long in Wowstar though, so don’t read in to that. They hopped to the next shiny game less than a month later.

Welcome to Guild Wars 2. I’ve been playing this game since the first beta. It’s changed at lot (not always for the better) but for me it’s still the best MMO for my play style by far.

Hope you have a great time in the world of Tyria.

Ya having played this game since launch I can still agree with you. This is probably the most wholesome MMO experience for me out there so far. I had actually taken a recent break to give some other MMO’s a go since I was feeling a little burned out of gw2 after the last WvW tourney. The ones I tried were Wildstar, FFXIV and Archeage. Of those, the only one I could see myself staying interested in is archeage which also does a lot of things right. But hell that’s gonna be F2P as well so I can just play both :P Anyway I decided to delete an unused character o make a new one just so I can experience the leveling post april patch. I find myself having a surprising amount of fun again, especially with the now populated maps

Ive tried around of 6-7 Superstar games in last year, and not even one get close of how good gw2 is.

I tried ESO, TERA, WildStar, Diablo3, WoW.. and all of’em are so far from what Gw2 is, that I couldn’t play without laugh at some aspects. They are good games, but far from reach into me as gw2 made.

Archeage might be good, but their combat system will be tab-targeting, like WoW and other traditional MMOs. After GW2, it’s hard for me to go back to that style of combat.

This one ISN’T tab targeting??? ….you don’t point the Reticle at the guy or more importantly where he’s heading to like UnrealEngine / Tribes / Planetside. There is no interaction at range at all without a target selected. Which is a shame because it could be a much more interesting Skill-test if it was. (and no “hitscan-attacks”, only target prediction)

Speaking of which, the OP might wanna keep an eye on “FireFall” also if he’s okay with Sci-Fi fantasy or “ghost in the shell” character style. I’m pretty mad at them right now TBH b/c they oversimplified what used to be a really deep Movement/Crafting system. But any afictionados of simpler gear systems might enjoy it. It’s a lot less convoluted now than the end-game gear grind in this game. And someone’s bound to be interested by that judging by how many complaints float around here on Gear / crafting hate.

Tab targeting is an option in Guild Wars 2, not a fact of life. Even if you don’t target something and you fire at it, you’ll hit it with most weapons. There are exceptions like mesmer clones where you have to have a target, but they are just that…exceptions.

You can kill stuff easily without targeting at all. I do it all the time.

calling bs on this. If you shoot anything, most of the time it goes straight into the Dirt because #1, we never got that First-person view mode we were always begging them for, and #2, our characters are always firing about 30 degrees lower than where our cameras are looking to hit anything at range you have to obscure your view with your own character by gimbling the camera into the dirt behind them at a weird upward angle.

It may not have occured to you but lots of people in this game melee. So you can call bs all you want, but I hit things all the time without targeting them and you can’t in most games. You can also hit with a bow, but it’s a lot harder.

There’s an add on that gives you a reticule and no one has been banned for using it, but I don’t personally like it.

For the tab-targeting .. personally i’m happy we still have it here since i really hate the shooter stlye MMOs like Vindictus, Tera, DCUO and Neverwinter. I still need the option to click skill with my mouse and i don’t want my screen to shake everytime i move my mouse.

Btw, I mostly use Range weapons, as I main a Ranger.

Disable “auto-targeting” and look how it then works with ranged. The auto-targeting normally works as if you use tab and locks the (more or less) next target.

But auto targetting is not tab targeting. Are you saying then that using ranged attacks without autotargeting means tab targetting is the most effective option. Well then you’d be right.

Which is not the same as other games were tab targetting is pretty much the only game in town.

In other words in most games you can’t use skills at all without a target. You can’t often fire off your skills in the middle of nowhere by yourself.

Its maybe more a hybrid system here .. however what i really DON’T want is that shooter style where you can’t click you skillbar with your mouse and where every mouse movement shakes your camera. And those games also normally have no tab-targeting at all.

Was my biggest fear before i could finally test GW2 in Beta that it had a system like that, because i uninstalled all these games mostly after 30 minutes of trying to play them.

That’s called Auto-Targeting. The game is literally tab-targeting for you within your FOV-cone and then that targets gets stuck as your active target until you either tab manually, or kill it. It’s also a good way to be a terrible ranger in general who gets kicked from Dungeons and WvW teams. Most good players disabled that annoying “feature” as soon as they noticed it made using the better weapons a real buggeraboo

Most mmorpgs are tab targeting to some point i think what ppl are mixing up is tab targeting vs stander mmorpgs combat they are different effects. Tab targeting is nothing more then a chose that you can go though different targets by hitting tab it has nothing to do with combat it self its just a means of giving info from the mobs your fighting with out being made to look at them. The stander combat system of mmorpgs is a pure butte push with no aim and no active evasion but more on the lines of passive evasion off of % etc.. So when ppl say “WoW” combat they are talking about attks being auto lock on as in they track the mob and passive def such as evasion block etc.. % not an active version of timing.

So GW2 is an active combat game with a tab target system. Where WoW and other games like WoW are a passive combat game with a tab target system. Compared to say DS2 (not an mmorpgs) that has an active combat game with a near tab target system of lock on (just because you do not hit a tab butte dose not make it any less then a targeting system.) I cant even think of a game that has no targeting system at all.

I used to use auto-targeting, before a bug got introduced with the targeting where it would auto-target the FURTHEST enemy away, one who often wasn’t even involved in the current fight, and thus bringing them into the battle and making things more difficult for me. >.>

I still would prefer auto-targeting as it makes things easier for my “no-longer-spry-teenage-gamer” fingers, but I get by with tab targeting now.

EDIT: But not to derail the OP’s thread. Welcome to GW2! Hope you enjoy your stay. Don’t let the negativity/toxicity here discourage you. The game really does have a lot going for it. It’s easily still the best MMO I’ve ever played.

I cant even think of a game that has no targeting system at all.

The big difference of the “shooter” targeting is that you always just hit what is exactly on the middle of your screen, while with tab-targeting or maybe better locked-targeting you fire at your select target as long as it is in your FoV

I think the main reason I have so much issues with this game is because I have done my research. There were numerous articles with cool features before the game was launched. When I went to Gamescon in Germany, they showed a bunch of cool features in a gorgeous game. There would be little grind and no mandatory content! You could jump right in and not have to work your way towards max level before you could enjoy the content. I had to play that one.

Sadly, a lot of what was promised ultimately didn’t get delivered. Ascended gear added a lot of grind, and recently it got worse with the trait revamp. As it stands, the game only starts to become semi enjoyable at level 30. The main storyline feels rushed after you get past the orders chapter. Dungeons have turned into stack-and-smack. There is no personalized home instance, no minigames, no interactive environment.

The combat system and jumping puzzles are the only thing about this game that is finished, and they rock. But in all other respects, GW2 is really just a mediocore game. And the Living Story isn’t even that, thanks to a certain Sylvari.

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

The Worst, Except For All The Others

Every time I go off to play other games, I am freshly reminded that Guild Wars 2 is the best game I’ve ever played.

Been playing off and on (mostly on) since Beta Weekend Event 2 (June 6-8, 2012) — a weekend which utterly and irreversibly ruined “traditional” MMOs for me forever (now two lifetime LOTRO subs lie forever dormant; curse you ArenaNet!).

After two years, I can say GW2 ain’t perfect, but the best way to appreciate it is to try everything else first.

Doesn’t it get old at any point to comlain again and again and again abot the totally optional ascended grind ?
A full set of ascended armor doesn’t even boost your total stats for +1% if we ignore armor.
In the end its just a theoretical value for perfectionist numbercrunchers and simply people who need a carrot on a stick, but you won’t even notice the difference at all.

And the trait revamp was bad, but its not something “that was not delivered”, or did they game said : we gurantee you that you never will have it harder to gain traits ?

Oh my god .. i just patched Lotro last week and logged in and was so shocked by all that UI crap, especially since i used a mod and all looked totally garbage since it seemed they changed something in the hotbar.

I really noticed that a minimalistic UI without all that modding stuff is in the end not that bad.

Yeah, we did our research for years leading up to launch, but that didn’t protect us from the gear treadmill that was introduced shortly after launch.
The best thing you can do is to not believe anything and wait at least a year or two for the devs to keep their design philosophy(or at least the parts you care about), and then consider trusting them with your money and time.

Ascended gear is super optional, in fact I just crafted my ascended greatsword about .. a year after its introduction. Funnier yet, I crafted it with a stat set that’s not useful in my build, just because the colour suits my character better! My plan was to transmute it over an exotic greatsword with useful stats for my build (though with the new wardrobe system destroying the ascended weapon in the process wasn’t necessary anymore)! As a player since the start, that’s how much importance I give to the marginal ascended stats increase, I only craft it for the fashion! I think the ‘treadmill’ mostly exists in people’s heads. :P

I have no clue what your talking about Britney.

When talking about stats i mean that what most player look at, and thats mostly Strength / Precision / Feriocity

Now a Strenght build has mostly around 2000 str .. a full set exotic give +15 or +16 more str, so thats less than 1% more str.
With crit it was easy before they changed it, at that time 1 of those 6 pieces gave +1 crit damage .. so that was exactly +1% more

For armor .. yeah i prefer often Knights over zerker .. but i really have no clue how much difference it is having maybe 2800 or 2850 .. and most of those zerker > all fans will mostly tell you that armor isn’t needed at all.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

A very warm welcome to you indeed.

Yes, while GW2 does have its flaws, it certainly is a great MMO.
Below are just a few points:

1) No monthly fee. And no one forces you to buy anything.
Everything in cashshop is for either convenience or cosmetic, no pay to win.

2) GW2 community are generally alot friendlier then WoW (don’t join groups that advertise as Zerk only though) It helps that GW2 does not allow addons like gearscore or dps meters to toxify the community like wow did. (yes yes you can spout lots of arguments why it is good, but face it, those tools do also contribute to community toxicity)

3) No gear grinding (This may or may not be a plus point depending on you. In GW2, people grind for cosmetic looks, not stats. We fight well, and want to look kitten cool doing it lol)

Great to have you onboard, you’re just in time to enjoy Season 2 of the Living Story which so far isn’t that shabby at all.

Because a treadmill is a single new tier of gear over a period of a year. Gotcha.

A completely optional one at that.

I think Guild Wars 2 has a way better combat system, even without the trinity. I tried it the first month, then logged back onto GW2. This game really has a great UI without all the flash and distraction that Wildstar has.

I think GW2 combat system is what sets it apart and makes it such a great game. It’s much closer to an ARPG like Diablo. I think that’s something most people overlook when they criticize GW2.

I think GW2 combat is OK. The combo fields have the potential to add a nice element to it…but the content arenanet gives is horried which makes the content pretty bland. Zergy button mashing, zero mechanics….zero reason to work together and utilize eachothers combo fields.

outside of fractals ofcourse.

Karma is as abundant as air, and as useless as the Kardashians.

I cant even think of a game that has no targeting system at all.

The big difference of the “shooter” targeting is that you always just hit what is exactly on the middle of your screen, while with tab-targeting or maybe better locked-targeting you fire at your select target as long as it is in your FoV

Even shooter games have a type of targeting system aim assisted and i image there a “hidden” from players type targeting system there too. Its all tools that you need to have to play a computer game there just some things a human bran dose for you with out you thinking about it that cant be added to an game environment.

Main : Jski Imaginary ELE (Necromancer)
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)
Server : FA

You however understood what i wanted to express ? I don’t think we have to
discuss the newest tech in the shooter area here really, since the last Shooter i
played was this one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3hb2uvXVv0
