I don’t see why you must be rewarded with gear for doing something.That is why i like mortal combat,supper mario and counter strike.Because i do them for fun.Not because they will improve my gear so i can one shoot people.
For 1st time i’m really enjoying a MMO that is not based on WoW’s gear treadmill.
For 1st time i’m doing something that i find fun and exciting.
For 1st time i’m not doing things for improving my ilvl gear.
For 1st time i’m actually doing dungeons not because they will improve a lot my gear but because i like the challenge and the fun they bring me.
For 1st time I appreciate the money.I was sooooo excited when i made my 1st gold.
For 1st time I have a reason to be out in the world.Seeing things jumping at rocks.Climbing jumping puzzles.
I like to have a choice.In games like Everquest,WoW,Rift,SWTOR,Tera and other similar MMOs you level as fast as possible so you can start doing the end game.
For 1st time I actually don’t hurry for anywhere.Because what i do at level 1 i’ll do at level 80 too.
For 1st time i’m not bound to raids or battlegrounds,because in GW2 you have many kinds of farming curencies which reward similar loot.And that is something i love.If you are casual and dungeons are hard for you,you can always go farm events and DE for karma.If you hate open world you can go farm WvW for different currency but the same reward.
For 1st time i have a choice what in what i want to do and what to farm.
For 1st time my gear is not the most important thing for me.
I really have forgotten what joy meant in a MMO which was not base on a gear.And i actually like to be not dependant on gear stats.

^This is the reason i play guild wars 2. also i would like to add the down lvl feature i can now enjoy playing with friends who have just got the game and its still a challenge
I constantly find myself worried that I’m leveling too fast and missing content but then I remember I don’t have to worry because I can come back to that area later and the challenge will be same even if I’m level 80.
Because general discussion is exactly that… it doesn’t need to be entirely swarmed with criticisms and negativity. It’s important for devs to know what people like and dislike in order to best know how to fix the dislikes.

So General Discussion is A) rants, B) asking Anet to focus on something and C), complaints? Some of them are making good points but come on, there is SO MUCH MORE to this game than it’s flaws and it’s a shame that the GW2 subreddit is a better place for casual reading and positive attitude.
I love this game |I dont have to feel liek I HAVE to level to enjoy the game and PVP is a BLAST!! no more players in BOA’s 1 shooting me makin it only enjoyable at max lvl and then the overgeared pvpers
Thias is my new home I am enjoying it and btw im lvl 36 in the first month yes i made other character but nothing over lvl 7.. still im a turtle not a WoW rabbit
Finally a post from someone that likes the game. Its getting really sickening to bother coming to the boards. I agree with you Moiraine. I’ve been playing mmo’s since 2000 and this is one of the best in a long time. And like you I’m in no rush to get to 80. I hope after tomorrow it will get better around here because panda bear comes out and hopefully take a lot of the complainers away. Everytime i login i have a good time playing and it doesn’t feel like a chore. I wish we could see more post like yours.
WoW invented the gear treadmill as a design option. It was in other games – Asheron’s Call had better gear, Shadowbane had better gear – but it wasn’t the primary focus of the game. It wasn’t the carrot held in front of you. The gameplay was, in those older games, and GW2 is bringing it back. They dangle fun in front of you – and let you eat it up!
Yes, this game brings back quite a lot of the feeling of joy and discovery I had in my first MMO. I think the co-operative nature of the open world content has a lot to do with that; the atmosphere is more friendly than any MMO I’ve played since City of Heroes.
umm…yeah…the “gear treadmill” was around long before WoW.

Yes i absolutely agree with you.After WoW dethroned Everquest it became the new standar for MMO industry.Why do you think every new MMO is just like it?Look at Rift,Tera and SWTOR.I’m really glad that Anet tried something different.Something that is not based at your gear but at things that you like to do.That is something which grabbed me from the start.Every day i do different things.Sometimes I farm materials,sometimes i do sPvP,other times I farm DE,World bosses and events.I like doing dungeons.Some are hard other are not but I do them because they make me think.Anet say you like dungeons?Do them.You like PVP here is something for you.So i’m greatful to the system they made
In WoW i had to raid every week if i wanted to upgread my gear.In wow I was bound to start with dungeons if i wanted to be able to do raids.
If i wanted to be competitive in PvP i had to either buy PvP made gear or to farm curency from battle grounds so i can have my imba gear.
What impressed me in GW2 is that lack of gear progression.
Yes it exists here too but you are not so much dependant on it,because the difference between sets is not too big.You may have gear for 1k karma,4k karma for 44k karma.Once you get the 1st or 2nd one you will want the last one but you won’t feel the hurry to get it because you already FEEL powerfull.Yes there is significant difference in stats but in this game even if you have imba gear this doesn’t mean you are good.It means just that you invested time to get it.Now are you good or bad depends from what you do to survive.

Now there always will exist people that love grinds or want the best things.So they will do everything they can to get the best of the best.
I like how Anet aproached GW2.From new angle not based on instances but on what you like.They gave us options.I don’t sya there isn’t grind.It exists but every MMO has it.In wow,rift,SWTOR,Tera it’s raids and dungeons.
In GW2 it’s everything.From open world giving karma to dungeons giving tokens to WvW.You actually have a choice.
Now that is what impressed me in GW2.I like Anet’s approach and i’m really greatful to them.B2P model is perfect for such kind of system.Even if you are bored from it you can always stop playing.And later come back to it without losing anything.Without being left behind.You can easily catch up and adapt.

OP: Great thread! A lot of your thoughts were mine as well – which is what drew me to GW 2 too.

Bots exist in every game.Look at WoW how many are farming battlegrounds.And with the introduction of CRZ there will be even more.

Well said OP. I feel the same way. I had almost given up on MMOs being fun until GW2. I like freedom in my games as well. I feel like every time I log on to GW2 I am free to do what I want. I also like not being pressured by a group to have a certain build or take on a certain role. It is a game. Why can’t I choose how I play and what I play?

First time, in a very long time, that I’ve enjoyed an MMO this much – not just for the game, though the game is great, but for the kind of players who are enjoying it with me.
I’ve probably spent 25% of my many hours in this game meeting people and rping, and that’s possible because the game setting, the history, the beautiful way it embraces you, makes that possible.
Because of that, I will always try to find time to post in these positive threads – because you make me believe an mmorpg can be fun and exciting all over again.

agreed with this. I am currently outlvling my friend but it is no issue! We can still play content and be challenged. I’m only level 60~ and in no rush to top out my character, or make alts. Ppl complain about no end game content when I doubt they have done half of the things they could be doing

I love this post, iv’e been taking my time and loving ever moment of playing. Honestly to anyone who is putting in copious amounts of in-game time I urge you to just take it slow and go do other things in your life other then grinding out for the best gear. I know people think its rude when we say get a life but honestly this game pretty much is telling you to find a little more balance in your daily activities. It’s much more enjoyable when you can’t play all day but have those couple hours at night plug in.

Every MMO is grindy.What is the difference between WoW and GW2?In wow you farm either PvP or raids.In GW2 has one more element which is meant for casuals.DE and events.They are not hard and give karma.
Anti farmer code is a good thing.Anet’ve created such beautiful world.Why do you want to ignor it?The code doesn’t let you farm at one spot.It gives you a reason to go around the world and do things.
About bugged personal story and events they are not being ignored.Have you saw the new patch?Anet is fixing the game.And one more thing.GW2 is only been month out.
If you compare what Anet is doing for the game and how often and what does Blizzard developers do for D3 then come and tell me again this is bugged that hasn’t been fixed.
At D3 things aren’t being fixed for months.
In GW2 you see little update today,new one 3 days later and then a big patch.
I know that D3 is not MMO but RPG what i compare are the bugs nothing else.
The gear treadmill, or Rewards for play, started with PnP D&D. A good DM always knows how to reward his/her players for a good play session. It’s a, RPG genre staple rooted that far back.
GW2 actually follows that to a point; the player can defeat a Dragon with a “normal” weapon or a lesser +1 weapon if so needed vs having to have “Glowy Sword of Dragon Slaying”.
Having “better” makes it easier, but isn’t “needed”.
Game is a blast though. So much fun; needs a little work here and there, but what new MMO doesn’t?
Now to get my rl friends to stay… they are all leaving. /pout
