I was really glad to see these new armor skins available for direct buy. I don’t have many other options aside from what is available in the TP due to my limited play so I’m glad I could get something else for a change. Here is a picture with my medium armor on aside from the pants. The medium pants don’t really seem to have much of a design so I am using the pants from the other set that sold before. I know some don’t care for the steampunk look but I like it.

I know there are already galleries but wanted to add a picture since the update went live. I hope they continue to add more direct buy/trade gold for gems to buy skins in the future.

Edit: Wanted to add a slightly better picture.

I really like the Heavy armor skin on female characters. Superb.

For me, the Medium and Light armors are absolutely ruined by the de-feminizing kitteney. The ugly boots don’t help matters either.

I really like the apparently Chandra Nalaar, (Magic the Gathering Planewalker), inspired helm and might buy the light armor just for the helm. Too bad they didn’t borrow more of Chandra’s look for the rest of the skin.

Seriously, though, who at ANet thought adding a “kitteny”/bib to the light and medium female armors would be a good idea if the goal was to make the armors attractive enough to drive sales?

I would buy more than one set of each if they offered a variant with flattering bosom, rather than de-feminizing “kitteny”/ bib. Might not be a bad expenditure of resources to provide such variants.

BTW, pretty silly that the name for a piece of clothing is censored by the forum. Kitteny equals something that starts with a D and rhymes with tricky. Maybe I should just call it a bib, because that really captures how silly they look.

1.
a. A woman’s blouse front worn under a suit jacket or low-necked garment.
b. A man’s detachable shirt front.
c. A collar for a shirt.
d. A child’s bib or pinafore.

Hi, Fiontar. I saw your post in the other thread as well and I do agree with you to some degree that many female armors in this game seem to go out of the way to show as little skin as possible. I’m not sure I agree with your bib issue, though. You’ve said repeatedly that the new light and medium skins have ‘de-feminizing bibs’ that you can’t get past. I don’t think these tops fit into the same mold as those other armor sets that work extra hard to hide skin. This armor has a very specific aesthetic and in my opinion, it’s been achieved well. I guess my question is, when you say that you don’t like these de-feminizing bibs, are you really just saying that you want to see some cleavage?

@Fiontar

For every 100 people I see wanting female armour to show more skin, I see the same number of people saying female armour shows way too much skin and cleavage. It’s an impossible battle for Anet to win.

However, in the case of this particular set of armours, I would say that Steampunk themes often (not always) take cues from the Victorian era in history. Not necessarily a period famed for it’s revealing clothes (though, there were plenty of them if you actually study the period). So to me it’s no surprise that a Steampunk set of skins covers up the ladies a bit.

The one aspect I do object to slightly with your post, is that you seem to suggest that NOT revealing skin is in some way de-feminising? This may not be what you intended, but it does sort of come across that way. I would think there may be people who take issue with this.

I’m very pleased with these new armors. I’m happy to see something a bit more elegant and simple in its complexity.

I happily bought a light armor for my Asuran Elementalist (that now looks like Cyrax from Mortal Kombat) and a medium for my Human Engineer; he looks like a crazed medic now, it’s great!

Still sad Anet has neglected Necros (which is my main) in the aesthetic department though. There’s a pathetically low amount of necro-looking armors out there and very few necro-looking weapons too.

As far as the new weapons they released all I half liked was the Sclerite weapons which looked so so anyway.

Either way I’m pretty pleased with all these new looks, just waiting for a necro look…

I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.

That’s the medium set, but only for females. The males get a completely different (and much less cool looking, IMO) set that has a usual trenchcoat look. And since Charr females use the male armor… yah, you won’t be getting the set shown in the first post.

The female medium armor is my favorite of the bunch, but unfortunately I’m in the same position. My female Engineer is a Charr, so I don’t get the cooler looking set. I’m also planning a female Asura Thief in the future and I would even consider buying the armor for future use, but the same issue applies there as well, they also use the male set for both genders. So no awesome medium armor skin for me.

The look what I got that you dont have game. Pretty much the whole point of MMO’s, showing off your shinies. But in this case you didnt earn them or accomplish anything to get them, you bought them. Pretty much ruines the competition for anyone else not “buying” stuff with real money, as you’ll never catch up with those who buy stuff with money. In the end its like being in a race and the people to cross the finish line first didnt drive the track at all, they paid the racetrack owner to put them on the finish line. How are you supposed to get people to join this race and try and compete when you blatanly openly allow cheaters in the game? Imagine any other “fair” game did this, no one would compete in it as its pay to win. kitten is this game, no matter how much you want to pretend “cosmetics” dont matter, they do and are a competition in itself getting them. When you let people buy the prize then no one else is going to want to compete in a game that allows cheating. Pretty much the reason i dont play this game anymore. Its pay to win cash shop garbage.

I completely disagree.
This is not Pay to Win at all.
People do not get any sudden stat boost or powerup when they buy armor skins on the cash shop, its literally just that, SKIN. for APPEARANCE COSMETIC sake only.

If you can’t fork out the cash to look good, then don’t complain. Its like having money only enough to buy GAP clothes and being bitter about others who have the money to wear Louis Vuitton.

Nice armor btw OP.

On the one hand, I’m glad that the female medium armor doesn’t use the redundant trenchcoat style we’ve all seen a hundred times. On the other hand, it looks awfully ugly to me compared to the heavy and light sets.

In particular, I don’t like how the hat makes you look like you’re bald underneath; while the gloves look great and the boots are okay, the coat looks completely nonsensical and barely steampunk. I’m curious what it’s based on because it looks like you have fairy wings jutting out from your hips.

I would like the person or persons making the call on armor styles to know that adventurer classes would look just as adventurous and maybe even more so if they didn’t wear a coat. In fact, I think in the vast majority of media with adventurers, coats are the exception rather than the rule. It’s nice to have a couple or a few styles that give a nod to the duster-wearing, gun-toting, wild-west adventurer – but there are other styles…

I plan on buying krytan armor just so I can have the jerkin. I just wish they would make armor more akin to that (i.e. blouses, jackets, anything but coats. Female adventurers are still female and some flattering (not naked or even skimpy) clothes would be much appreciated.

I wanted to keep a good part of the organic sylvari look but with high tech pieces. I would have preferred to keep the T1 cultural sylvari coat, but alas, the gloves dont show at all when it is worn.

Been around the genre forever and that’s not really my experience at all. The “puritans” tend to be a vocal minority, but I see a lot more people complain about plain/ugly armors than complain about “sexy” armors. I’d make a distinction between sexy and crass, or even sexy and a requirement for more skin. The new heavy armor doesn’t show skin, but it does accentuate the female form very nicely.

I take GW2 to task because there does seem to be a concerted effort to de-feminize and de-sensualize female armor designs. Cover cleavage, obscure curves, nix bare legs or arms, etc… There are some sexy/revealing armors in the game. However, they make up a tiny percentage of those available. There are some armors in the game were ANet has gone to absurd lengths to cover skin. There are a couple stunning light armor gowns that would tastefully show some leg if they hadn’t added bell bottom pants under the gown. Who the heck wears pants under a dress? There are skirts paired with the ugliest stockings possible, some that look like they have stuffing in them to make the legs look bulky.

I googled steam punk armor and fashions and almost universally the look features a bare cleavage or otherwise accentuates the chest. These “bibs” aren’t associated with steampunk fashion, they appear to just be a deliberate element meant to de-feminize a-net’s take on steampunk fashion. Almost like someone decided, “Ok, we want steam-punk inspired armor, but not with cleavage. Find any way possible to do steampunk with no cleavage. Oh and no curves either”.

With skirts and dresses, they could just offer shear stockings with out the wrinkles, texture and embroidery so that people who want a more sensual look can dye them to appear bare or look like nylons, while those who don’t want that can just dye them colors that make them look like tight pants or non-shear stockings. However, they go out of their way to make sure you can’t have that diversity.

I’m not asking for the game to start offering fashion in the vein of what can be found in TERA online, but armor that is feminine, sensual or shows more skin in a non-crass manner are much needed for this game and would likely sell a lot better than armors like the current new set.

What makes things worse is that many of the armors in the game avoid being feminine or sensual just by instead being ugly, which leaves a lot of players with more modest taste also feeling like their options are limited.

I just picked up the heavy today. I took my Guardian off the shelf as an excuse.

I agree I don’t care much for the heavy helmet. I think the female version is a bit better. IMO the male version looks too much like some kind of bucket with goggles. I like the eye part but the helmet itself just doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the set.

Not much color in this pic because my poor Guardian has been neglected for a while and all my good dyes went to my others. I don’t even know if they match, color blind lol. I’m guessing my first pic with the medium must have because no one said anything.

I asked in the other thread what you meant about de-feminizing armour, but I will just reply here.

Tastes differ, I don’t feel the same at all.
My characters suffer from none of the issues that you describe .
I will attach some pics here.
As you can see my armours are form fitting and in the case of my Mesmer she certainly shows leg, and cleavage for that matter.

Clearly people who run around in those armours, that you take Anet to task for, must like them.

As for the Steampunk design of this set- I also googled Steampunk Fashion and this is what I came up with:
https://www.google.co.za/search?q=steampunk+fashion&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=JN3LUb-lLqHm7Aa28YDoBA&ved=0CDUQsAQ&biw=1920&bih=955

The new armour seems to fit right in

Edit: It really is not my intention to derail the thread by posting non- related pics. I just felt that I had to give a visual reply to Fiontar’s post.

Charr Hide Armor would have some interesting implications if added to the game.
