A.Net,

Thank you for everything in the game. First let me just state that everything that came in the basic box was more than my money’s worth for the $150 (CE owner here, have all the prints framed on walls and Rytlock on a shelf). The game was very fleshed out, tons of fun that me and my guildmates enjoy immensely. But, that wasn’t good enough for you as you just had to keep adding content each and every month. Great content. Fantastic content. So, I want to thank you…

Thank you for….

…Halloween What a blast, literally! Mad King blasting through the Lion’s Arch fountain, all the fun tiny things with the event. The jumping puzzles, ghost Yaks, skeleton mobs, candy corn nodes, costume brawl, item skins, Reaper’s Revenge, the Labyrinth, Mad King’s fight. It was all so fun and there was content for every play-style.
>
>
>
…Lost Shores Somewhat of a bumpy “shipwreck” (ha!), it was still great enjoyment. The best part was how there was the mystery that led up to the events, with the signs on the shores, the Consortium showing up, the washed up whales. All those things culminating towards the Karka’s invasion of Lion’s Arch, the big fights against them, and eventually the chase to Southsun Cove. The final fight was long (4hrs on my server), but very challenging and rewarding at the same time. Another temporary event that’s not only cemented in that new (at the time) zone, but in the encased Ancient Karka statue at the basin of the nest.
>
>
>
…Wintersday A great holiday for one and all. Another great holiday jumping puzzle, mini-games in the form of Snowball fights, free mini-pets, free everlasting potions, cool toy weapon skins, bell choir, and tons of good ol’ holiday cheer. ***A personal note: my guild was one of many that created their own events by all taking Reindeer potions and running as a ‘herd’ through the WvWvW battlefields. The confusion and laughter that it created as very entertaining and fun.
>
>
>
…Flame and Frost Though a bit slow to start, this arching story line adds to this being a Living World and not just a static game that many others are. Each time updated, there are things like more refugee camps, more signs of warning, more enemies popping up on the roads. The climax of this event should, based on the description, be an entertaining end to an odd alliance of cats and mole people.
>
>
>
…Super Adventure Box It’s a dungeon! No, wait, it’s a jumping puzzle! No, wait, it’s a game within a game! No, wait again, it’s an educational stimuli for training future generations of Tyrians! No, wait further more, it’s 8-bit inception! No, wait one more time, it’s a device to make all of Tyria hate monkeys! Wrong! It’s all of the above and then some. An exceptional distraction from the everyday norm of the game, which is fun and exciting. The mode known as “Infantile Mode” makes the content enjoyable for even those who are jumping-puzzle inept. The skins for the game are amazingly cool for skins that are free from the dreaded Black Lion Chests; also being able to get the Super Fun Boxes from the even, rather than just the Gem Store, is a really sweet touch too.
>
>
>
…Mini-Dungeons This is something that many are unfamiliar even exist or were patched in. Vexa’s Lab is one of the most amazing dungeon experiences I’ve had in the game. The boss fights in these are uniquely fashioned, the puzzle aspects make one think, and overall they present a distinct challenge that can be either soloed or taken on with friend, guildmates, or PUGs.
>
>
>
…Fractals Love and hate content, for sure it is. The addition of the new gear Tier stirred the bot of boiling anger amongst many, but the new dungeon content that came with it brought love and enjoyment. Though there are quite a few that speed run these solely for daily tokens, attempts at chest rings; there are also those that run these for the interesting fractal zones for the fun of it (maybe I’m the only one?).
>
>
>
…WvWvW Ranks & Changes A much beloved change to that section of the game, these ranks give purpose and “progression” to content that some deemed lacking direction. Though some adjustment may be needed to the WXP gained from doing PvE mob events (worm, Warg, Centaur, etc.), overall it’s a welcome change. And the removal of culling: AWESOME! That one change alone has brought back many who could not stand getting stomped by otherwise invisible enemies.

…sPvP Updates Updated content in the form of rewards, tournaments, 2 new maps since launch, and tweaking to sPvP overall. This content is getting better and better with time. When custom arenas are added sometime in the near future -next patch or two- then it will further the enjoyment as guild fights and duels can start up within it. Only nudge against this section of the game is map objective variety, of which there needs to be more of (CTF, Destroy the Castle, etc.). But, still loving popping in every so often to slaughter a few, get slaughtered, and have a good ol’ time.
>
>
>
…Leaderboards To be perfectly honest, I don’t really care too much about leaderboards in an MMORPG. The score at the end of the week for WvW is the goal at that time; same for the score at the end of an sPvP match. However, this is still good content to those that want to be recognized for their achievements and progression within the game. It’s great for them to have that kind of measured accomplishment and compare it to the rest of the game’s players.
>
>
>
…Balances, Bug Fixes, and More Basically a “job well done” on all the normal MMO patch updates that goes on. The balance, though not perfect, isn’t ever completely out of wack like some other classes in other games (*cough*Warlocks*cough*). Bug fixes are progressing nicely with it being understandable that it does take time to fix complex bugs without breaking something else within a tied system.

So, to close with what I’d originally stated: Thanks for EVERYTHING. Every bit of content you added to this game, or will add. Be the content temporary or permanent changes, it still adds to the overall player experience in the game. And the focus of the content doesn’t just stay in one little area either, as different parts of the game are added to: sPvP, WvW, exploration, PvE, jumping puzzles, story. That shows care for all your customers, not just a select few. Thank you.

Thanks for EVERYTHING

Big thumbs up to this post!

I’ve had more fun, more smiles, more great MMO experiences in this game than any other. Imaginative, creative content keeps pouring out the gate and I never even had to pay a sub fee. Spectacular!

Finally!! I’ve seen so much negativity in the forums that it’s exhausting. This game is beyond amazing! Nothing is, or ever will be perfect. Especially considering you have a game community with millions of people, it’s impossible to make everyone happy but they try so hard to find ways to please and cater to all sorts of players. The GW2 team has worked tirelessly to create a new, unique, and ground breaking MMO. It’s in the early stages of the game and I can already see it becoming even more amazing than it already is! I hope the GW2 team sees this so they know how much many of us appreciate all the things they do! Keep it up

n ot going to say im a fan of everything they did but the devs are trying they might be trying to put too much into the game too fast but they are doing a good job. halloween and wintersday were my favorites. lost shores was a bit of a mess but they learned a lot and it was a good effort. sab i see a lot of love not my cup of tea. id love to see more spvp and wvw changes i dont care for either format but some like them only my opinion and yes the devs are trying. fractals another update that has a lot of fans not my cup of tea but dev deserve praise for this too. guild updates good for bigger guilds but yes another bit of praise for trying here devs. change in dailies and monthlies one of my personal favorites and i get it some arent crazy about them. living world not sure about it it seems light but its just getting going hope to see something decent come out of it

so i can say yes the devs are trying and thanks and good job. well worth the money. its not all my cup of tea but they are really trying and deserve praise

I like this post. But… I have to share my feelings from the other side of the fence. Things that I feel didn’t pan out as I hoped they would.

First and foremost, ANet has kept up on the monthly updates, I am definitely seeing them making an effort to evolve this game. Unfortunately, I don’t think this evolution going fast enough. However, this might just be the nature of free to play MMOs. Long story short, most of my friends have already quit, and those that are left (VERY small amount) are now looking for another game to play. Once they all leave, I have no reason to continue playing GW2. Unfortunately, if they can find a game to invest their time in, they won’t come back.

Its been 8 months and we really haven’t seen anything new in the way of permanent content except fractals, and that got old quick. Most of what ANet has done has been focused almost exclusively on one time holiday events, which we no longer have access too at this time. SAB, while I won’t deny that its fun, is going to be gone soon too. Its also content that doesn’t even fit into the theme of the game. While the one time events were amazing (Mad King’s Clock Tower and Bell Choir are my personal favorites), I can’t help but feel that time could have been better spent on more permanent content we can enjoy year round.

The Flame and Frost story arch was interesting, but extremely shallow. They made it seem like they were adding a couple new dungeons, but instead we get 2 little story mode solo instances. I did all of it in a single day. I have no reason to go back and do them again. I was honestly expecting more. A lot more. The lead up to it was also extremely lacking. For an entire month we just got tiny little trickles of fed ex quests and camping a portal for an achievement. I wouldn’t even call any of that content.

Southsun was just… I have nothing positive to say about any of it. The in game event that started it all was just… eh, moving on. I can’t even stand going back to Southsun. The entire thing left such a bad taste in my mouth that I never even want to look at that place again. The Karka are even some of the most annoying things to fight in this game. The ONLY redeeming quality Southsun had was the rich orichalcum vein, and that got taken out. Now, the only reason to even go to Southsun is if you get unlucky and manage to draw a guild mission that forces you to go there. Even the guild rush event in Southsun is terrible. It is unanimously regarded by everyone in my guild as the worst rush mission. You can just hear the anguish, dread, and torment in peoples voices whenever we get told the guild Rush event is in Southsun.

Speaking of Guild Missions, these are pretty cool, sort of. I honestly can’t explain it, but Guild Missions don’t really feel very impactful. They feel more like a diversion or just something you do on the side. I was hoping they’d be large scale events that required your entire guild to participate in. Like a series of events that lead to a champion boss at the end, or defend a town from a massive invasion force or something.

The WvW update was also not what we expected. While the elimination of culling was great (no seriously, we love it), there was no new content added there. All we got was an experience system that ultimately means nothing. We can’t actually DO anything with our rank. The siege specialization certainly wasn’t the “Game changing” content we were expecting, either. All in all, it was a huge disappointment. WvW is still the same old thing it has always been.

Game is still amazingly crafted, but it doesn’t seem like it has the draw to keep people playing.

Stuff goes here.

Most games at the 9 month haven’t added even as much as the fractals. I think your expectations are out of line with reality. In the time that the game has been out, in addition to the Fractals, they’ve also revamped a dungeon, added two new PvP maps, and other things as well.

As far as permanent content, well, you can bet the stuff from Christmas will be back next Christmas. It wasn’t a waste…it was an investment. Most of these games have holiday events. Making good ones that will last for a long time (which they can also build on) is pretty important.

I don’t remember Rift adding nearly as much as this game in it’s first 9 months. I don’t recall any pay to play game adding this much in the first 9 months.

Sure it’s a couple of instances. I agree. They should have never promoted it the way they did, and then no one would have expectations. But the only way Anet is really falling down on the job is if other MMOs in the same time frame have out performed them. I haven’t seen that happen yet.

It’s only partially if they have outperformed other mmo’s from the past or current generation, it’s also if they will outperform upcoming mmo’s. Now that they have released they also have to be aware of what other mmo’s will be doing in the future, or what current mmo’s will take from the the GW2 user experience.

For everything they do well, another dev team will be asking “How can we implement this in our game?”. For every misstep they make, another team will say " How can we do this better or not at all?" Gw2 is now in competition with itself, with it’s own good ideas that will be brought into other games, and with it’s mistakes that will not show up in other games. It will no longer be enough just to say “Look what we did, isn’t it great?”

Realistically speaking, I doubt any MMO is going to come out with bugs, without balance issues, full formed and ready to go. This is Guild Wars 2’s problem. It came out too early. I don’t think any MMO is going to be much different.

It’s easy to say, well other MMOs are coming and they’ll be better. That’s what was said about Guild Wars 2. The reality is, making an MMO is hard hard work. Bethesda, as an example, puts out single players games that are so buggy, their players have to fix the problems. And that might work for a single player game with a big modding community.

I’m not so sure that will work in an MMO. Again, time will tell.

I agree on everything but WvW, sPvP, and balance changes.

The WvW abilities makes no difference to the game, at all, and it takes way too much WXP to get the full supply increase. Removing culling sounded like a good idea, but in game, it has resulted in there being one blob per server running around, with around 150 players in each. When culling was in the game, there was a lot more small groups running around, which was a lot more fun.

No doubt that sPvP is improving, but it still feels very much like it’s in beta. ArenaNet is constantly testing new things, adding content, then removing it all again. It has taken way too long to get something as simple as leaderboards in the game, which is just one of many things there should have be in at release.

While I have to applaud ArenaNet for their very quick bug fixes (this is honestly really exceptional), the slow development when it comes to profession balance, is just really frustrating. Month after month, we have to watch each profession getting miniscule changes, that barely affects the game. I understand the fear of breaking the balance of the game, but right now they are just being overly precocious.

Agree, especially with the Bethesda remarks. Seen some of the early gameplay that was “leaked”.

Bethesda is know for having buggy game on release its tends to bee a good month before there single players games are some what not so buggy.

Thank you for being positive!

I am neither positive or negative, I’m a realist. I enjoy this game, I enjoy the combat, I enjoy the races, I enjoy the professions. I also feel that there are bugs, there are balance issues, there is a slight problem on focus, there is a slight problem with communication between the devs and the player base. I believe they will fix these in time, but time is against a MMO developer, not an asset. If another game comes out and can do what this game can, but better, GW2 will be a reflection in a rear view mirror for many players.

Thanks for EVERYTHING

…Flame&Frost Retribution: The content is awesome and fun. Running the dungeon was a challenging and exciting adventure. The end boss(es) was humorous to start with their cinematic, but brought a very serious and frightening fight. The reward for it all being the account unique gauntlets are really cool looking. Overall, thumbs up on such amazingly fun content.

It still amazes me that everything the OP listed is given to us for just the box price, with NO SUBSCRIPTION!
To be able to play a game of this quality, with 1,000s of hour of enjoyment, if just a joy.

Arenanet, you really did set the bar high, not just for MMOs, but for all future buy-to-play games.
Thank you !

If your entire game experience hinges on a single skill, you have been setting yourself up for disappointment. I guess none of the other stuff the OP mentions has any importance at all; RTL is 100% of your game. How very odd.

FWIW, I play a D/D elementalist, and I find it’s the variety of skills and sequences of use that make the class fun, not one single skill that I build my whole attack around. I use RTL a lot, but this nerf isn’t going to have any serious effect on the way I play the character.

I agree; I really loved the Halloween event, for me that was the best out of the lot and a complete blast. Okay I’ve whined a bit about the April patch recently, I was fuming about it at first… but it’s amazing to think you are getting all this for free really. I’m looking forward to the next Halloween event.

I really liked Wintersday. As for flame and frost, I thought the initial introduction was pretty lackluster with the boring memento and audio log parts, but the instance parts seem to be fun.

The game has been, and continues to be, fun. Worth the price of admission, while so many other MMO’s have not been, imo.

…Dragon Bash A great mid-summer holiday event with some fun things to do and great decorations. Brought with it Dragon Ball, a very cool Quake like mini-game. And that song, oh that song is still stuck in my head “bash the dragon, smash the dragon, drive him back right into it’s den.”

…Sky Pirates of Tyria It wasn’t just that that Marjory was a very cool character added, with the whole Columbo murder mystery going on. But they stacked on that the instanced dungeon Aetherblade Retreat. An amazing challenge that was very rewarding and fun. Oh, but then on top of that there’s also the additional other Aetherblade Ship jumping puzzle that’s a permanent part of Gendarran Fields.

…Achievement Rewards Achievement points used to be a comparable number to the likes of /age. Now it’s a rewarded system of goodies every time a cluster of 500 points is tallied to the score. Each a smile in a box, though some more than others (the 5,000 box was AMAZING!).

…Bazaar of the Four Winds A very enjoyable new area, mini-games, sPvP map ( Skyhammer ), and lore based faction. The new mechanics introduced with the Aspects are really unique. Sure, there are some that don’t like how it’s very movement and jumping oriented, but more than plenty have fun with it. Sanctum Sprint bringing back the days of Mario Cart as a speedy thing. And the most overlooked part of it, would be the strange artifacts the market people have, which some summon Veteran/Champion creatures that attack the market place.

…Cutthroat Politics We, the players, exercise the that given upon us by the development team the right to vote. The ability to choose between a well known heroic police officer or a corporate penny-pincher; a choice that also helps pick the design theme for the next Fractal event being added into the game (on top of the Molten Weapons Facility and Aetherblade Retreat being added at the same time). The micro story behind each candidate’s reasoning for obtaining Sky Pirate treasure helps solidify their persona’s. And once again Lion’s Arch gets decorated for an event, though this time it’s covered with posters and banners for each of the runners.

…Southsun Survival This deserved special solo mention just because it’s the spiritual successor to Hunger Royal from the beta events. The word “AWESOME!” cannot be used enough times when referencing this insane mini-game. Takes major advantage of environmental weapons, trap mechanics, and movement.

…clarity and communication Referencing the Looking Ahead: Guild Wars 2 in 2013 blog post. That gave information on what the players are to expect from the constant development and evolution of the game. This is besides the interviews, daily forum posts, and the weekly Twitch live streams.

Overall a fantastic progression of the game and it’s enjoyable content. A big ‘thumbs up’ to everyone involved with the game. Keep up the good work.
