In addition, they have in the past with GW1 done small Thanksgiving additions. They are often in the guise of a small food or drink drop or even in NPC dialog. I’m hoping for something similar, but agree it should be small. If it isn’t there at all, no biggie.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

There’s not been any thanksgiving in GW2, as there are no weekend events like in GW1. It would have to be incorporated into a 2 week living story update.

FlamingFoxx is right, even if it does come across as slightly rude.

You can’t cater to only one culture. Like was said, Thanksgiving is an American holiday. If you make a whole holiday in game for it, then you’d have to do the same for other cultures as well to be fair. It’s like saying why don’t we make an event for the Qingming Festival (my apologizes if I spelt that wrong)? Because it isn’t a shared holiday amongst all cultures.

GW2 is a worldwide game. As much as other cultures would like to have their special holidays in game, Anet has to limit it to shared holidays or Krytan holidays to be fair. Otherwise, there would be events going off almost every day for everyone’s holidays and it would be chaos.

^— Yup,
GW1 had small weekend event for the slightly more obscure holidays (Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, Saint Patricks Day -also Easter-). Which was fine because they literally just made some new items drop from enemies, but to do something on the scale of GW2’s holiday events for something specific to America would be odd.

Yes Arenanet is an American company but they are extremely aware of how massive their Europe player base is, hence why during GW2’s development they were continuously going off to European events to promote. Thanksgiving just doesn’t fit.

I wouldnt care(as an european gamer) if they did a small update with some npc’s there, some dialogue here, 1-3 new consumables, and maybe a skin.

Ofcourse it doesnt have to be the size of winterdays and stuff. (seing as the same goes in rl to)

Setting aside cultural issues, I can’t say I’d really want a Thanksgiving holiday in the game, and certainly not in November. We’re coming right out of Halloween, and about to go into Wintersday, so I’d much rather have some normal Living Story updates than make it a three-month-block of holiday content, especially when the holiday is as one-dimensional as Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t mind mobs occasionally dropping, I don’t know, turkey legs and cranberries as a joke, but it’s just a weak foundation for a game holiday, at a time of the year that’s already packed with better holidays.

People are already complaining because there are so many festivals and parties… even I’m worn out of it too.

A nice little nod like pumpkin pie drops would be good though; who doesn’t want free food from mobs/WvW loot bags?

In GW1…. when we had Cantha…. and it was the only location the holiday took place. It was called Canthan New Year, also the Lunar Festival. It was a celebration of the celestial animals that watched over the Canthans. And it only lasted for a weekend.

We don’t have Cantha here. And they don’t do two day events here either. Dedicating a two week event to one culture’s holiday is much different than having a two day event in a location that is based off a specific culture. It makes sense that Cantha would celebrate a similar holiday because it is based off the same theme.

Kryta is not based off American culture, it is based off a mix of cultures, thus it would be out of place to base their holidays on American culture. Especially dedicating a two week holiday to it. Wintersday and Shadow of the Mad King/Blood and Madness are based off holidays that many cultures celebrate in their own ways.

Two weeks of humanity streaming from Kryta into a neighbouring zone that has no humans. Then have the Krytans engage in a couple centuries of genocide, followed by neglect. It’d be more interesting than any of the other LS updates so far.

Then, after centuries of Genocide, we get another LS update where that other race becomes dependent on humans because they are unable to take care of themselves, or don’t want to. Then, human representatives offer that race some funding to set up a casino because its illegal on human lands. Then every couple of weeks, we can have that race threaten to secede from Kryta, even though they wont, they just want more money!

You’re right stale, that would be an interesting LS update!

Thanksgiving really isn’t an American holiday if you consider that it is just America’s version of the celebration of the harvest. Lots of cultures, particularly those with large agricultural economies, have a harvest celebration.

EU is actually a bit odd in that regard from a global perspective.

4 other countries that celebrate it as well, so I guess that shoots down the “it’s an AMERICAN holiday” argument.

Personally, I don’t see the need for it in GW2. They do not do Saint Pats, Easter or any of so many more, so why should they do Thanksgiving?

But going back to the OP’s question, I highly doubt it. There wasn’t any Thanksgiving-related event last year, and with the frantic pace of the Living Story this year, it’s 100% certain there won’t be anything for Thanksgiving again.

Well, yes and no. It’s mostly American only in this form that we see in games and movies etc, but it is a holiday pretty much everywhere. It just varies a lot how it is celebrated, if at all. After all it is originally ancient Celtic festival so it has been around here in Europe in a form or another long before it spread to America

In GW1 they did have pumpkin pie and apple cider drop around the Thanksgiving Holiday. Just as they had 4 leaf clovers drop and Shamrock Ale around St Patty’s day, and they had an actual celebration for Chinese New Year (Canthan New Year). And chocolate bunnies and golden eggs around Easter.

It’s completely their choice which they do and don’t do.

This would be nice. The only problem I see is that it would be wat too close to Halloween and Wintersday, so we would have too many festivals consecutively (I am assuming that the Wintersday even will start in two or four weeks, but it is just a guess).
