Guys, what happened? Did I miss a memo or something? I’m fairly certain several posts have appeared somewhere on these forums concerning this but I couldn’t turn em up. I speak of course of that accessory slot residing at the upper left of the accessory slots on our ‘Hero’ screen.

As a young Charr pup I had dreams of a super hero-esque cape. As I matured my taste in back coverings did as well but they remained unfulfilled. I recall getting one after completing a Story Quest in my early days. It was meager to say the least and carried roughly the same stat boost as a fresh pair of socks, and no on screen graphic as well but it was a start God Kitten It! Oh excitement – oh rapture! I was sure this was just the tip of the iceberg and remained breathless with anticipation (not really but it helps the narrative).

So I come to you today now level 80, a couple quests from completion of my Story Quest and in avid pursuit of an admirable set of gear for PvP and generally looking cool as I masterfully create in the kitchen these days. I also come to you BARE OF BACK Sirs and Madams! Still I remain in scraggled pathetic back adornment with those same sorry few scraps of material given me in my long hence youth! My back longs for the long flowing deep purple and gold adornment befitting my royal station! Above all, that barely used sixth slot cries out ANGUISHING for lack of a massive stat buffing Jewel! ANGUISHING I TELL YOU!!!

Whats the deal Anet guys? Was this slot and item type just slated for deletion from the game altogether but slipped past Quality Control in to the retail version? It kind of seems that way to be honest. Whatever the case it’s there and it’s swarthy smudge sits on all of our collectively otherwise sharp, sexy, gloriously armored avatars.

Your quickest and utmost attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

A Charr backing out of rooms daily for shame of his lacking fashion options,
Mayann

:)

TL;DR:

What happened to any back piece accessory slot option other than that really sad one we get early on off a Story Quest? Really seems just outright forgotten about by the design and development teams. We really need some help in that department when you get a chance. Thanks.

You get a level 80 back item from your personal story, and you can buy more from a guild armorer. It’s a bit weird that there aren’t more options, but they’ll probably add more in the future.

Engineer gets one from the start. Though no stats in it. Still trying to figure out how to add stats to it.

It’s a bit odd that there are so few options for that slot.. what I don’t want though, is one of those silly towels hanging down my kitten A decent cloak or something, sure.. just not a towel…

@ Downstairs Eddie, Thank you. I could swear i had heard that hinted at somewhere but didn’t wanna just come out and say it because I really wasn’t sure. That being the case I’m off to knock out those last few chapters. Hope it has a snazzy graphic on the avatar. If nothing else though I just hope it has a spot to throw a jewel or other buff on it though.

Also nice to hear they have guild option. Think I’d rather have that one actually unless the Story reward one’s buffs are super dank. I’m sure the guild one is visible so we can rep our insignia right? Hope it has that jewel slot above all though still.

The story one isn’t visible. I don’t know about the guild one. But yes, both have upgrade slots.

Awesome, thanks for the info bro. As long as it has a slot I’ll take what I can get for now.

(But keeping working on a slick graphic if it’s in the plans Anet!)

As someone else already said, you get a high lvl slot piece from your story quest. You need a lvl 80 gem to upgrade it. You can buy pieces from a guild armorer if your guild has that perk, but they are expensive (1-10 gold depending on the lvl I believe). These are backpacks that show your guild emblem, and they’re hideable. Right now, there are no capes in the game.

What’s disappointing is we had cloaks for years in GW1 and they didn’t even add them to GW2…. fail

@Rukia (sorry for some reason I can’t quote); Though in GW1, they were automatic. You automatically had a cloak and it had no stats and was for only displaying your guild insignia. Just like a tabard in WoW.

Another issue is, clipping I would assume. If we had cloaks, they would clip really bad with pretty much 90% of the armors, not to mention Charr tails and weapons. In GW1, you didn’t carry your weapons on your back and everyone was Human so there was no major clipping issues. Now we have weapons on our back, tails, different character sizes, poofy armors, and everything that will gladly clip through our capes, making them undesirable to wear.

While I would want a cape like in GW1 that I can represent my guild insignia on, it would cause more issues and more complaints than it is worth.

Would also like to see more back-pieces/cosmetic pieces for back pieces. I think I’ve still got the one from my story quest – It’s really a toss between the story one or a guild back-piece.

And I can’t even see my back-piece, which, from the icon, resembles a scarf?

AFAIK, cloaks/capes are coming to the game in an update, as are guild halls.

Hopefully cosmetic backpieces will come in too, quivers for rangers!

I’d like to see them take a page out of Aion’s book (I know I know, just hear me out). I remember in my SHORT time playing that game, how cool it was to have customizable “guild capes”. I saw people running around with pictures of “Gir” from “Invader Zim”, pictures of “Cthulhu”, and anything ELSE you can imagine.

It works just like any other upgrade slotted items. The upgrade item must be of the appropriate level. By example, the one you get from the Lv30ish quest has no level requirement, thus can only receive tier 1 upgrades. To use a Lv80 upgrade item, the back item would need to be for Lv80.

I’m only responsible for what I say, not for what you understand.

I miss capes, and the backpacks look like crap, but I’m all for them sorting out the clipping issues before implementing them instead of tossing them in half-assed. The Charr rail issue’s not that bad since every charr has them, just make the cape shorter or put a center slit in it, but making it work and not look horrible with dozens of different armors, weapons, shields, etc. is just nuts. Still, I hope for capes.

Just wish that you could get a better back upgrade than the level 80 Green from the story outside of a Guild. Rares/Exotics?

What puzzles me is that we’re actually saying they should make them good first, before implementing them.
Are we on beta still?

It’s not some pvp imbalance that only pops up on live fights or anything.
It’s a cosmetic feature they planned from the start.

At this point bugs are more important, and a lot of other pressing matters.
But it simply shouldn’t have taken this long, sorry.

I agree, Kim, but the “get it out the door and fix it later” is pretty much industry standard now. Happened with Mass Effect, Skyrim, TSW, SWTOR… maybe not as bad as this, but still.

Short of getting all gamers to boycott the entire industry until this changes, we’re just going to have to grin and bear it.

I want the cape from GW1 implemented into GW2 for one reason, The stupid emblem looks awesome and all BUT it freaking changes the way your chest armor looks all together THAT is NOT acceptable.

Blizzard and Anet played a game here, or rather their marketing devisions did.
MoP and GW2 were set up to like chess pieces.
In the end both were rushed.

It’s no coincidence MoP came out just when the novelty of GW2 was bound to wear of a bit.

This is relevant for this topic in the an important way:
little things like this cloak got dropped in the race of both stalling and rushing.

If any of these companies would claim they didn’t let ‘that other game’ decide their pace, I stop to take any of their business communication serious…

I’m fairly certain that back-pieces, spare the few backpack ones, were removed from the release because arenanet wanted to better refine the cape animations and add them later on.

I don’t mind that, I’m sick of games where capes end up going inside the player’s sprite or whatever. I guess I could give them more time for this one, that’s if they focus on actually improving the game of course, instead of punishing everyone by the slightest relevance to bot behaviour.
