That Winterfest Jumping Thing is not a Puzzle
It’s still 100% optional. It is required for a skin, which isn’t gear, so still optional. Also, patient effort applies to this puzzle, how do you think people get good at this. Determining the pattern and following it until you can do it consistently.

Youre right, its not a puzzle. Its a jumping puzzle.

ArenaNet, your “jumping puzzles” are fine when they are 100% optional content, but forcing them on all players when only some players like (or can physically DO) them is inappropriate.
Man…I really wish Anet didn’t have me locked in their corporate HQ basement and forcing me to do the jump puzzle. Hopefully your post will bring some justice to this world.

It is not a puzzle. It also needs more servers and better server software.
Oh and making it a STUCK IN COMBAT area, complete with the horrible in-combat movement was a masterstroke, Anet…

No he explained it and also that most people become better when trying, to which I agree as this is the first year I made it. I usually gave up pretty soon, this year I didn’t. If you’re physically impaired that’s a whole different story and anet probably should take something like that into account when doing these events.
There’s a lot that’s good with how the whole wintersday was set up and some points that should be improved – as after all it’s wintersday and not some raid or dungeon meta.
ETA: But for now, keep calm, try again, try to find a helpful person or stick to someone who looks as if they know what they’re doing (that’s what I did)

Wierd… I havent played that JP last wintersday and I will not play it this wintersday, I don’t feel forced to do it. If I where to get the Shoulder skin then the JP would be the least of my problems but I know that it is impossible for me to get so I don’t bother doing anything that has to do with that.

I agree that it is not a jumping puzzle, in the most literal sense of the word, more like a jumping challenge. However as others have said it is optional, just like every other bit of content in the game tbh (what is the line that defines mandatory and optional content in this game?) because if you make the decision to get the skin, yes you have to do it, just like I have to do a lot of things I’d rather not in this game to get a reward I want but it does not force you to do it- every time you choose to try it you are the one making the decision.
Personally, I love the wintersday JP. I think it is really easy, much more so than the clock tower, the only real challenge is the time pressure once you know what to do, however I am very experienced with jumping puzzles. I don’t mind though, I can make myself a ton of gold from presents farming it

The shoulder skin is entirely optional, doesn’t this make the jumping puzzle optional?
I haven’t done it since last year. I didn’t get the memo that I have to do it or? Wait what exactly is forcing me to do this? Will I not be allowed to login if I don’t do this first?
When you regularly speed run this puzzle you can find all kinds of small shortcuts, patterns in the exploding presents, timing of the snowflake respawns, etc. There’s absolutely a puzzle aspect to it.

Not really. You learn to roll when passing a snowman. That is basically it.
Does the game even call it a ‘puzzle’? I think it’s just called Winter Wonderland.
Oh snap; slam dunk; mic drop; explosion; walk away!
Just kidding. But it really is a puzzle in that it’s a problem (‘How am I gonna do this?’) that amuses (well it’s fun to some people, not all puzzles are fun to everyone) and it requires patients to complete it. By your own definition it is a puzzle.
Most of the Jumping “puzzles” in the game aren’t really puzzles anyway, so it hardly makes a difference.
“a toy, problem, or other contrivance designed by presenting difficulties to be solved by ingenuity or patient effort.”
i think you should re-read the definition of puzzle. winter wonderland is without a doubt a puzzle.
problem? check.
designed to amuse? depends on your audience. not everyone likes all puzzles. i would say for some, absolutely.
presents difficulties to be solved by ingenuity or patient effort? for sure!
it’s a puzzle by every meaning of the word.

Yeah, you obviously have no idea what I’m talking about if that’s all you can think off.

technically i cant think of one jumping puzzle which is really a puzzle. Its more a sort of an Indiana Jones style Adventure Thingy.

It’s been a while since I’ve done JPs, but Weyandt’s Revenge, Scavenger’s Chasm, Mistwrought Vault, and the Guild JPs all had elements of puzzles. Not all JPs are thought challenging, but it’s definitely fun if you’re into platform adventures (SAB!).
As for the OP, it’s not worth getting stressed over the Wintersday JP or the shoulders skin. IMO it’s one of the more fun JPs that’s meant to make you laugh and have a good time. It’s not to be taken seriously because it’s a means to an end for a skin. Try to enjoy the lighter side of Wintersday.

Nice double post, champ. And yes, that is basically all you learn. Rest is just normal running and jumping.
Merriam Webster
Puzzle: “a question or problem that requires thought, skill, or cleverness to be answered or solved.”
Yes, it is a puzzle. Oxford and Cambridge agree as well. So does the dictionary used by the OP if you look at the entire entry.

As a matter of fact I’ve been refining my jumping lately. Figuring out some of the harder skipable platforms. Just because the only thing you’ve figured out is “dodge at the snowman” doesn’t mean there isn’t more to learn. When to wait on the candy cane vs making a mad dash to the peppermint. How to skip the peppermint after the turn by cutting corners and dodgerolling twice at the end. How long to wait so you don’t over take spawning platforms and which platforms you can consistently skip. Jumping straight up the presents, or having to angle right or left because an important present might burst unexpectedly.
These are all things to learn and improve at.

I don’t need to respond, all the others who did for me made sufficiently effective points, but I will anyway.
Don’t cut a quote off so that the ragged edges of the statement make you’re point. That’s called Cherry Picking. It’s disingenuous and and frankly rude. Skins are optional extras and always have been. It’s not something you need and if you’d quoted the whole statement you would have me saying the same thing twice in a row. Optional is optional. Since you don’t need the skin for any reason you don’t need to do any of the things “required” to acquire the skin. If you WANT the skin more than you want to not do the puzzle, then you’ll have to do it. But that is you making a decision on what is more important to you, it is gauging your priorities, not being forced to do something you don’t want to do it. No one is making you do it other than you.

After failing quite many times, I have achieved at least the level of cruising through the snowflake flatforms without even thinking about it. the boxes are one of the worst parts of the thing imo, I could never figured out the pattern, through strangely I got through quite frequent. And the absolute worst part of the puzzle: OTHER PEOPLE! gosh, so many distraction and charrs and norns are so big they can obstruct your views of the platforms.
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".

The problem with the presents is that they’re inconsistent. There are three or four patterns, but so far I haven’t been able to figure out how to predict which pattern will be the one to occur. I’m trying to figure it out based on which ones spawn last, because that will probably be the answer.

As a proud max sized Norn, I say this: ‘bout god kitten time we had an advantage on a jumping puzzle. Sometimes when people complain I’ll even throw on my commander tag. It’s their own fault they let it make them salty and put them on tilt.
Puzzle =/= Jumping puzzle, just in case.

They are. I did the LA jumping puzzle with a friend, we both never did it before (and I could do it another 10 times and still forget where to jump) and we really figured out where to jump next – most puzzles are like that if you’re not using a video. And it was fun doing it without any help or clue.
Man, wish I had seen all this salt about four hours ago at lunch time, my green beans were a bit bland…
Can’t we just be friends? Leave the jumpers to the jumping, the dingers to the dinging, and the ballers to the balling? I wub you all!
Oh I thought this would be an intellectual discussion on what constitutes a puzzle and what is should be named…..not another /cry emote. The prize is terrible anyways….you are better off ignoring it and turning 10k drinks into gold.

There is no pattern. It is based on how many people are going through the gingerbread part. Reddit has a thread about it.

I would like to see that thread, because it sounds stupid and wrong. Also not effectively trackable, nor confirmable. It is more likely that it’s based on time, either actual time or timer time.

I agree. GW2 JP’s are a test of reflexes and motor skills and it leaves some people out.
I wish they would offer alternative ways to get jumping puzzle content or even the bell choir content. I know some disabled players who play GW2 and the JP puzzles are frankly unplayable for them. Even giving the alternative of exchange 1000 Wintersday gifts for the item that is left in your collection. Have all of them – the bell choir one, the snowball mayhem and the JP one attainable via a vendor for a significant contribution.
On my own thing, I can’t even get into the puzzle half the time that I play. World is too full :/
Y’know what else sucks? Having your connection to the server be a gate to success in jumping puzzles. No matter how good your motor skills are, you’ll never be able to complete a JP if your actions happen a second or two after you press a button.

I understand the complaints, but I kind of feel like a gate is something that can be taken out, and I don’t think that’s really the case with ping times.

It serves the same purpose, but it’s much harder to get through. It’s either I cough up way more more money for a small boost to my connection, or just wallow in the mud.

I used to be good at jumping, in offline games.
I have no reason to believe I’m not still at least passable.
Problem is, online games are not like offline ones and them trying to pretend they are, against all the evidence to the contrary, is really not working, for me.
Maybe if I had a $3000 laptop, instead of my reasonably new, but less expensive “gaming” one and I lived on the same continent as the server I play on, it would be OK?
But, in my current location, with my current laptop?
Nope.
I could also turn all my settings down, but I don’t want to.
Why play a beautiful game, just to spend all your time looking at rubbish graphic quality?

Ok… so I had the opportunity to spend the past couple hours inside a bugged JP. Timer set to 00:00, like the one guy in the post. They have it wrong. I was all alone in there, the last person to finally leave it. It has nothing to do with people approaching anything. I think this might actually be a relic of the original Wintersday event. The presents start popping when the the crumbling wave starts approaching them. In the original Wintersday you couldn’t stop to rest on the platform, you had to immediately move forward because if you didn’t the presents would pop and you’d be stuck.
They are correct that it only happens in conjuncture with the Gingerbread path.

Yeah, of course I know that.
But, I have this thing where I don’t do anything I don’t want to do, or don’t feel I should have to do, in games.
I don’t particularly want to do jumping puzzles and I don’t like looking at unnecessarily bad graphics, so it’s just something I don’t think I’ll be doing.
I’m not a circus poodle, so I don’t jump through hoops for treats.

Or, for significantly less you could get not a laptop. And considering WP plays on the NA servers (I believe) and has a whole series of the Jumping Puzzles, it seems like that is probably your biggest issue, though ISP is still a valid complaint.
