I love being able to transmute my gear. There’s alot of ugly in the world of skins but a few awesome ones that are just to die for. Each to their own i suppose?

The problem is it seems we won’t be able to transmute our gear in the future (a bit hyperbolic but my point remains). Transmutation crystals cost us 32gems each if we buy 25 at a time and 40gems each if we just buy the minimum of 5 at a time. When i started playing towards the beginning of the year 100gems was <1g50. What’s it now? 5g+? You’re looking at 10g just to change the looks of 5 items compared to the <3g at the beginning of the year. This will obviously continue.

The exchange rate will result in no transmutations for the majority of the playerbase as it becomes more and more expensive in terms of gold. This isn’t so much a problem for things like the deluxe edition of the game or other big buys from the gemstore but for something as small as transmutation? You’d have to be insane to spend real world money on transmutation crystals!

This isn’t so much a suggestion thread (although you can infer a suggestion) but a prediction of the ever increasing cost of making it so our gear doesn’t look terrible. Something will have to change in this regard otherwise they might as well just delete transmutation crystals.

So my questions to you: what do you make of this? Will you be able to afford transmutations in 2015?

Yes I will.

I only buy gems with cash because I don’t feel like grinding out the gold for that when I need gold for a lot of other stuff. I usually buy gems when there is something like the gathering tools so I have left over gems.

I bought several level 80 stones. I don’t think I’ll ever run out.

I speak for my self and no one else. Only fools believe they speak for a majority.

For the sake of the topic though, Gems are up to about a 8 gold / 100 conversion rate right now. So it’s getting a lot more expensive to buy Trans stones.

Fine T stones are 5/200 which is $2.50 USD or 50 cents apiece. The sets of 10 are 45 cents each. Now, a coke costs how much? Or a pizza? How many spend $2.50 on junk or trivial stuff on a daily basis and don’t even consider it. And when you consider you can get it partially or completely for free, it’s hardly something to worry about.

The matter is for these whiners and complainers (and myself included in the reason coming up in 30 characters or less), is the knowledge that Credit Cards are not free money. If you can’t pay it back, you better not use it ever… even for 25 trans-crystals! Yet as for me, if I have the gold, I exchange for it, and with gem cards, is it really so bad to go out and spend $25? I dumped probably $200 in gems (also includes gold to gem conversions) in cards and gold already for a game that only cost me $10.25 (God bless Gamestop for their trade in cash) to buy!

Unless Anet can take directly from a bank account…securely, not many on here will use a credit card. Debt even of a few dollars is not good to have period! I’ll never touch a credit card ever even for a game such as this. Its why mmos must be F2P or B2P or hacked and be on a free private server (Ragnarok online/ PSO BB/WoW (if I didn’t hate it).

I’m glad for gem cards, and this holiday I’m spending $100 on at least 5 cards, 2000 gems each, to get my 6 characters with full inventory space and max bank tabs. I only spend money on games anyways.

You are ignorant if you believe that Anet made this game so that everyone can get the store stuff for free with little effort. The main purpose of the store is to make them money, you want to get the store stuff without having to do a major grind, then pay some money for it and support this MMO at the same time. This is an MMO, the whole business model is based on getting more money beyond selling the game itself. Be grateful that you do not have to play a monthly fee for the game

You argument goes against itself “little effort”, “major grind”…..

I will be able to for afford them based on how i use the trading post, ie I just sold 2 (of 4) molten jet packs, selling 1 of them turned a profit on what I originally paid for the 4 of them. Really though this is because Anet aren’t controlling the drops appropriately, they’re allowing the surge of gold into the system which devalues it which is only going to get worse as time goes on. The loot system needs to be retooled (ie stop handing out coin, hand out items that force the player to trade to maximise profit, this encourages money exchange between players) or major gold sinks implemented. With the current approach, you’re better off spending all your gold on limited edition items (ie toxic spore back skin, 15g now, 60g in 4 – 7 months) and gems and waiting a few months to when those items shoot up in price.

I hear Tarnished Coast actually has those a lot.

I personally have liek 25 or so fine trannies in my bank. Don’t have much use for them anymore as they’ve never added any new armor to the game that I’d want to reskin something to.
I don’t think there’s much issue right now with Transmuting being expensive till they add their big wardrobe of armor someone mentioned long ago.

Its true you can convert Gold to Gem’s and buy transmutation stones but as the OP pointed out there going up in price steadily. Which forces more and more people to use real money to buy gems. This system is by design they want people paying more and more in game gold for item’s so they will be more likely to just whip out the credit card.

Compared to actual F2P games, the gem store here is relatively innocuous. I’m not even sure how you can compare this to other free to play games. Games that lock out content, professions, races, or allow you to buy traits, skills or better weapons. So many games are truly pay to win.

You can play Guild Wars 2 without ever buying or needed a transmutation crystal.

Guild Wars 2 is still one of the cheapest MMOs regarding premium content, even if its still a cash grab and that bar just keeps getting higher (the toxic armors are horribly overpriced given that they’re only one part). Its also one of the few that you can buy premium content for gold in, so that’s a good thing too.

But, are you really afraid of spending $10 on 25 transmutation crystals, which is enough for two whole characters (including lots of weapons), when it costs you that much to eat at McDonalds or something? I don’t really understand. And the people without jobs will have the time to grind the gold anyway.

If you’re that concerned about it, use transmutation stones, you get them for free for completing many maps, especially cities. Its not hard to build up to a stack of 100 of them just from exploring maps, and you can use them for level 78 exotic berserker gear which is suitable for 99% of all content in the game including dungeons as you only lose a few stat points and armor points. Also, many good condition damage exotics are available at level 78 and below as well.

You can also buy many skins that don’t need crystals to apply. You even get some of them from your achivement rewards.

This would be true except there is nothing in the boutique that you need. No content is being blocked from you. No gear is being kept from you. No skills or traits are being kept from you. You are being hindered in no way at all. You are not being forced or pressured to use the boutique at all.
The boutique is for people who want luxuries, pretty and shiny things. And who cares? The game needs to be supported and through luxury items is the best way to do it. Its a free MMO that some people support via boutique, which in turn affects you in no way whatsoever, since all they’re buying is fluff.
This is like complaining you can’t go to work because you can’t afford a Porche to drive there in.

You aren’t crazy because of those 2 posts about how the poor can’t compete, you just misunderstand a lot on how gold is gotten in-game. You go on making it seem like the only way to earn gold is buying gems and then trading them for gold but failed to really take in there is another way to get gold, it’s called playing the game but for you, you don’t want to grind to get it.

Gem to gold trading value goes up and down everyday. This is Anet way of trying to keep the in-game economy stable and if a small amount of gems equal a large amount of gold the economy will suffer.

As for the OP post and many other posts I’ve seen people still don’t get it that you DON’T need fancy looking items and armor to be good in the game or have a large amount of gold to enjoy the game.

Kill stuff to unlock weapons skills, most confusing thing I ever heard of. (sarcasm)

You guys are completely missing the point. Anet has said time and time again that ultimately endgame gear progression is cosmetic and not about stats. Cosmetics are competition in this game, not just in the traditional way. If it gets to the point where it is completely and utterly cost prohibitive to transmute gear, then it will absolutely be a case of the rich being able to outcompete the poor in terms of progression.

Frankly I think it’s absurd that Anet sticks to this whole “skins” and transmutation stones paradigm when what’s in the best interest of the players is to have a wardrobe feature like almost every other game out there.

Edit for clarity: What I mean by a wardrobe feature is you have two equipment pages, one for stats and one for appearances. Appearance slots override the appearance of your stats gear. No mess, no fuss.

Cosmetic endgame competition is an oxymoron. There is no competition in a cosmetic game because there’s no direct advantage to any one piece of gear. Even appearances are subjective; in one player’s mind the starter medium armor and plain daggers might look better than T3 cultural with dual Incinerators. Who is winning in this case? Noone – they both got what they wanted.

See every one thought I was crazy when I made my post of the poor cant compete.

Wasn’t aware that cosmetic skins was a competition.

kitten , you mean to tell me I’m being SCORED on this?

There is a fashion achievement category. Which benefits if you buy gems, then sell them to buy armor. Cultural armor is so expensive.

Edit: I buy most with real dollars. But yeah, the in-game gold cost is really expensive.

Selling gems for gold is one of the worst ways to make money in the game. Just out of curiosity, I looked it up this morning and 1300 gems (approximately $16 USD) is worth about 75g. If that sounds like a lot of gold for the money, you’re crazy.

And I’m glad it’s not a better exchange, otherwise the whole system would be devalued.

Does anyone besides people just starting out actually convert gems to gold? The exchange rate is so low, level 80s are much better off doing dungeon runs or champ trains if they want to make money. The only ones I can see being tempted are new people who think one gold is a big deal.

So if 1300 gems is 75g then 2000 (one card) is around 100g? if you get 6 cards (12000 gems), you could get your precursor.

It is a competition as long as there are skins which are objectively more difficult to acquire. Difficulty could be due to cost, or due to time required to acquire it. Some people don’t have the money to compete for the ones that are more expensive to acquire, such as gem store items. Even if appearances are subjective, there is still a strata to skins – some are cheap and easy to get, and some of the high end, end game skins are difficult to get or otherwise more exclusive.

Approximately. And, hey, if you have a spare $150 for a precursor, have at it.

The whole transmutation system needs to be scrapped and replaced by a proper wardrobe. It’s an exceedingly poor fit for a game which is all about cosmetic progression. Yeah, sure, ANet wouldn’t be able to hawk those obnoxious transmutation stones anymore but I’m sure skin sales would go up quite a bit if they adopted a system similar to DCUO in which you can freely swap them out as you please.
