The Favored Few
You must not be familiar with how the media works…
-Mike O’Brien
Because we can’t be angry about both?
Things are often released to media outlets and the press before they’re given to the unwashed masses, that’s been true for a long time. The advent of Youtube and Twitch just mean that the ability to be a ‘media outlet’ is available to more people than it ever has been. Someone who posts content for a game on Youtube and does a lot of (usually free) marketing work for a game company might wind up getting the same perks that a traditional media outlet or a website gets. It is what it is, it’s smart business.
It’s marketing. The YouTubers, blog writers, and such have an audience that the GW2 website may not have access to. So while they can and do put out info on their own site from themselves, they also allow the media special access to info and gameplay because said media then goes out and promotes the game. That’s just how it goes. The same applies to the film, music, and book industries; there will always be “special” people who will be given early access to things in order to help promote the product.
Welcome to the real life, where famous people get better treatment and privileges for being famous.
Nothing will change it, what ANet does is a small investment in places where they will get marketing, Youtubers will make videos about it and doing so creating visibility to the game, while you being “just a dedicated player” won’t add anything to ANet.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
I think it’s awesome that ArenaNet would not just include all these Youtubers, but I assume they’re also paying their way there? Knowing a lot of these guys are scraping by/in college, I can’t imagine they could all afford to fly out to Seattle for a few days.
This is going ABOVE AND BEYOND to include the community, not just the traditional gaming press, and it’s something we should all be cheering.
So no, OP, I do not agree with you. As much as I’d like to be there, I’m ecstatic that these guys and gals were given the opportunity.

That’s not special treatment or privilege. That’s PR and marketing. Anet know that youtube is where a lot of their consumer get information and opinion about the game. It’s in their interest to work with popular youtuber to distribute informations and contribute to the hype train. I don’t see what the problem is?
It’s all about marketing.

I understand that you want to know. We all do.
But this is not a case of inside trading. These representatives of the media do not gain anything by having the knowledge except being able to prepare their piece for the day it can be released to the public. I for one am waiting to hear what they have to say.
Ok, so I am most likely in the minority with this train of thought, but it kind of frustrates me that a few people in this community of ours get special treatment, let me explain.
A favored few youtubers have been getting all sorts of special treatment from Anet, like being privy to knowledge of future events that are going to happen, that they can’t talk about until it’s officially announced, but they get to know about it anyways, and then get invited to secret press conferences and given information that the rest of us can’t know about yet?
I am just as dedicated a player to this game as any other, but I don’t make Youtube videos, so I, as well as many others are not among these “privileged” few. The point I am trying to make is if you have something to say Anet, then SAY it, and don’t say it to a favored few among the community and then have them regurgitate it to us…
Tell me, how many people does your voice reach? (And no, Facebook bulletins don’t count.) Then compare that to how many followers Wooden Potato or Dulfy has.
To make another example, if you made an announcement to the world that you build your own computer, and Google does the same, how many news/tech blogs would care what you had to say?

The smart thing to do from a marketing standpoint is provide information about key features that have already been uncovered partially by mining to the sources that comment on that info as a hobby, so that they can get the facts straight and relay it properly.
They’re getting free marketing for controlled leaks under embargo. They pay nothing, and they in turn get the news handled professionally by people who care about and have developed, publicized opinions on the state of the game.
That’s not favoritism, that’s efficiency.

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.
Here’s some food for thought:
Once upon a time, Bioware, with their game The Old Republic, had a press conference where the devs answered questions about future content and got suggestions from their community, how did they do this? They invited the guild leader of every guild in the game to this conference and then they live streamed the entire event to the community, where the community could submit questions live and have them answered by the devs.
This, is what I guess I was trying to have come across in my initial post. This is what I would rather see Anet do instead of doling it out to a special few people.

Again, these “special few” are indeed special, because their voice reaches hundreds of thousands. It’s cheaper, marketing wise, to spread info via word of mouth from dedicated player bloggers, than to pay for advertising to spread news. Tech and Game reviews are one thing, but when you heard it from your everyday player (like Dulfy), it tends to mean more. You can trust a “friend” far more than you can trust a company that’s paid to spread information.
Sadly, Dulfy was not invited.

While that is a neat concept, there’s nothing particularly wrong with how they disclose information now.
Not to mention that they don’t normally do it that way, and with minimum impact on the community when they do.. Everyone that attended Pax got information about HoT(as an example) along with the people watching the livestream before some of the youtube commentators were even allowed to talk about it.
You’d make your point better if you mentioned the above as a suggestion without at the same time stating that players who have developed, well-subscribed youtube channels are being specially treated when they are provided info (with a nondisclosure agreement) in order to get their commentary prepped for when release day hits. Giving a news reporter news to report does not make that reporter any more or less special, it just gets the news spread properly.
If I follow you correctly.

with people having their own 1 person guilds, every single guild leader would be hundreds of thousands of people. That’s not efficient marketing.
The one thing that I will admit to being upset with was when the Collections first came out. Some people discovered very rare drops would be a part of the certain collections first, and bought up all supply on the TP. In this case, there was an economic impact to releasing information through bloggers.

Nor is there a big difference. Most of the Youtubers invited to the event asked for questions through their channels, Twitter, Reddit, etc. If you had a burning question, you could have tried to get it asked.

You must be a Revenant IRL…walking around blidfolded all day long not knowing what’s going on around you. At least you got Thor skills!
Nothing like free advertisement is the answer.
It’s not like these people are just lucky or are “favored”. They put in real work to get the followings that they do, and get minimal to no compensation. IMO they deserve what they get, especially if all that is is just being able to hear the new news firsthand.
If you want to be “favored”, put in the work.
