Please Arenanet, consider putting the Gift of Battle elsewhere. It’s the last item I need to make Twilight, and I’ve been just running around in random wvw maps trying to figure out how to progress this reward track. At this point I am no longer enjoying my time playing, specifically because WvW is not fun. At all. Yet it is still the only way to obtain the Gift of Battle. Please, it’s all I need/want, and I’m driving myself mad because I’m stuck here for god knows how long. I almost never see a commander tag anywhere, so I can’t run around with anybody, if I try to capture objectives by myself I get stomped by huge zergs or groups and I’m at a loss as to what I’m supposed to do now.

If you are not in a rush, just do the easy WvW Dailies. You can advance the track by just capping Monuments, doing the Veteran, Big Spender, maybe turn a camp, escort Dolyaks, etc. Or, I’ve heard, follow the zerg in EotM.

It takes me about a month to finish a track, and I only do the very easiest Dailies.

Today there are two WvW dailies which can be done quickly:

  • Mist Guard Killer
  • Land Claimer

Both of these are pretty much PvE dailies where you go and kill veteran mobs.

Daily Camp Capturer is about a medium since, while you’re fighting PvE enemies, it can be annoying to find camps to claim as they’re either on long cooldown from just being claimed or get claimed before you can get to them.

Even if ANet agreed that this was an issue (and apparently, they do not — they have twice doubled down on the change), it would be around a year before the game changed.

During that year, you would get your GoB by completing just 80 WvW dailies to progress the reward track, i.e. less than 7/month. Big Spender accounts for at least three, so you just need to 4 of the easier ones:

  • Land Claimer: kill a single NPC & remain in the circle for a short period.
  • Mists Guard Killer: kill 5 guards; can be done at the camp to the north of your spawn location in your home borderland, if it’s held by the enemy (that’s the safest one)
  • Caravan Disruptor: kill a single Yak; also can be done at that camp
  • Master of Monuments: cap a monument for your side. Easiest is probably near your home garrison if you’re red, but there’s at least one close to each spawn location in opponent’s borderlands and not that far from your garrison in blue & green BL.

The safest time to do these is outside of peak hours, when there are fewer people on the map. The ideal way to do them is to team up with someone else, anyone else. Lots of people run away from two.

Wow the entitlement is strong still, The GoB takes less time than the GoE to acquire most than 4 times as fast, dedicated WvW players don’t want to spend 16-20 hrs(can be a lot longer if not speed clearing) in PvE to get GoE but they do if they want a legendary, when a dedicated PvE player only have to Spend 8.5hrs max ata minimum of 4.3 hrs to get a GoB see the disparity yet?

If anyone has a case it’s the WvW players that have a better case to get GoE added to WvW than it is for GoB to be added to PvE since there is almost no time investment comparatively for GoB.

GoB can be effectively Afk’ed through all that’s needed is every ten minutes slap a yak after spending 5 mins to build participation. While PvE map completion requires a lot of Active play to be done in a reasonable time.

Very true. Anet just returned the GoB to it’s original status of needing to WvW for it. They almost completely devalued badges of honour by adding them to achievement chests.

If Anet desperately wanted to boost WvW play, they’d add a legendary back item, Ascended Armor vendor, and any other carrots they can. Hey they even tried to add ‘story’ to Edge of the Mists, when Mai Trin escaped and fled there with Braham and Taimi in tow, once you entered though there was no elaboration on it. (I’m also still waiting for that Triumphant Hero armor set here)

They changed it because originally WvW required completion. That meant there was a WvW component to the legendary. When they took that away it required badges of honor, which I had plenty of just from acheivement chests. So I could actually do very very very little WvW and still get my gift of battle (I’m aware you have a minimum level to do that, but that goes very fast.

Now you’re back to having to do WvW again, to get a legendary, which apparently was always the intention.

I did everything 3lse because it involved content that is enjoyed, but this… In any case, 8 can see it won’t be changed, I’m sorry for wasting everyone’s time here. What server are you on? If you were on gandara I’d be more than happy to show you round.
I’m sure people will be willing to help you get the Gob.
It’s far easier than you think to obtain just join a zerg and flip objectives put a booster on and before you no it you’ll have it.

I understand wvw isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but if you play it organised you might enjoy it. However it’s not like pve in that you learn a mechanic and auto attack, it takes a while to develop knowledge of classes and what to dodge and what to take and this can be frustrating.

Also is this reward track not available in eotm?

Also also imagine how every wvw player feels having to do pve stuff for 90% of our stuff (armor-weapons etc) so if we have to do it surely you can stomach 1 reward track

This new method just pushes afk gameplay

You go in do your dailies and a few things then stand around afk killing a yak or something every few minutes while you stand around afk have the time collecting on your reward tics. The old method was better because the currency had to be earned. The reward track works in pvp because you get points for direct action in WVW you get points for staying logged in it punishes doing to much because once you hit cap you don’t get anything extra.

So it should be reverted but that would be supporting WVW an Anet with its hand me down reward tracks and so forth aren’t big on supporting the mode or taking input from players

That’s great — I’m glad that the requirement opened up a new source of fun for you.

My point, however, is that it’s unlikely that’s the reason for the change. Most PvErs don’t go for a legendary, so this change only affects a tiny fraction of players. If the goal was to increase WvW participation, this would have been the least efficient, most controversial way to do it.

If the goal was to incentivize WvW play, they would have first introduced a reliable way to convert Memories of Battle + Badges of Honor into ascended gear — that would get all sorts of people volunteering to try WvW. In contrast, this change drags people kicking and screaming into WvW — two minutes of thought by anyone working for ANet would establish that.

So again, I would bet that ANet didn’t make this change to drive people to WvW; there are just too many better ways to do that.

I was doing wvw last weekend for exactly the same reason. I had no idea what to do but I ended up just capturing a keep and then just move on to the next one to capture which keeps max participation up and ticks 300+pts every 5mins with guild and wvw booster and generally people left me alone.

Its quite boring just waiting for keeps to get captured and may not be the best way but it’s consistent and ~9hrs later I had GoB.
1 week later and today I have Twilight yay! Even better I never need to go back to wvw and have to put up with the inane and offensive map chat ever again.

I feel like the OP is on either on CD or the servers linked with CD, as we had someone complaining about that last night in Team/Map chat. Either that or very coincidental :P

Honestly just running with a group will get him the participation, run your guild wvw reward track boost and if you have excess boosters that boost wvw track you’ll get through it (it might not be an all in one day thing but you’ll get there). Also dailies net you wvw potions…. 2 potions = 1 reward/notch closer to finishing the track. I save my potions up and use them closer to the end of a track.

do 20 days of dailies to get the potions. Before hopping in wvw go guild halls tavern to pick up the booster. It’s really easy to get and probly 0.2% of your total grind to a legendary.

I don’t know. They seem to be using legendaries as an incentive on other occasions, too. Both backpacks are strongly tied to specific content, and so is the envoy armor. By the way, I don’t know many active players in PvE who do not possess at least one legendary weapon.

I rarely WvW, but did it just enough to get the Gift of Battle. Between the easy dailies and the Big Spender, you really don’t have to actually play WvW all that much. To be honest, I’d rather have to get 2 Gift of Battles than have to do World Completion for the 4th time (only because of the Hearts).

There’s a difference between setting up a reward structure to encourage people to change the way they spend their time versus to reward people for how they were going to spend their time anyhow. Both are incentives for the same content and we shouldn’t assume they are one & the same.

Even if you don’t agree with this, there are so many other ways that ANet could encourage people to play WvW that would apply to everyone, not just those interested in legendaries. And again, there are all sorts of ways to make it feel like a reward for moving to WvW, rather than a punishment for being PvE-focused (which is what the OP & others are saying they feel).

The legendary backs are clearly special rewards, since there are (for now) at least two ways to get them: challenging small-group content & challenging PvP (although of course there’s disagreement about how challenging either collection is). Similarly, ANet has repeated early & often that Envoy armor is intended to be the special reward for challenging larger-group content (raids) — there’s controversy about whether that was a good choice for them to make, but it’s clear that was their intent.

By the way, I don’t know many active players in PvE who do not possess at least one legendary weapon.

I know people who have played every week since launch without legendaries. I think I’d want to survey 10,000 to 50,000 players before determining what is true for the ‘many’.


To summarize:
My primary point is that there’s little evidence that ANet changed the GoB requirements to encourage people to play WvW. It’s therefore not useful to use it as an important part of an argument as to why ANet should (or should not) change the requirements.

A legendary should mean you spent some time in all game modes. Live with it. This is the price of an expensive trophy.

I’ve grinded out two legendaries and working on a third/fourth. Don’t think for a second a little pvp is too high a price to pay.

Forget the dailies and what you’re doing. Don’t do any of that stuff or it will take you forever. I get Gifts of battle at roughly about 6-10 play hours each and have a nice stack in bank that I will never use. I did the tracks for something else from it (forgot now what it was).

if you do the dailies it will take you X days to get it, likewise with the small stuff like camps, dolyaks, roaming (which is what you’re doing) etc.

So this is what you do to get it fast:

1. Remember that Gift of Battle is account bound, not soul bound so you can get it on any toon then stick it in bank and pick it up on your character which you want to use it for. So 1st switch toons, in WVW you will do good if you are on any of the following:
Guard either vanila or DH, Reaper, Herald, Druid are the best ones, you can use other toons, but these are most effective.

2. Go pick up some super cheap exotic armor, 6 pieces, either tank set such as Soldiers or Dire (PVT or CVT) or Support set (half magi half clerics if you’re not sure and wanna be rounded out), some cheap exotic trinkets, rings, etc. doesn’t hurt either. Keep your weapons ascended / legendary regardless of which stats you use elsewhere.

3. Get cheap runes for your cheap armor, either tank runes such as melandru or offensive runes such as krait for dire necro or water if you play support.

4. Switch up your traits and utility skills. Make sure you have at bare minimum some sort of damage reduction in traits (either vs power or condi), 2 active insta cast stun breakers, 2 active insta cast condi cleanses (or transfers if necro) and at bare absolute minimum 1 active stability skill.

So you should end up around bare minimums of 3k armor, 22-24k hp and either -condi duration applied to you or cleanses both passive and active, this on any toon you play, even on ones such as elementalists (easy to do).

5. Hop into EBG, get on map chat, and ask for TS or applicable VOIP info. if no tag is there then try team chat and ask for any open raids and VOIP info. Keep in mind if people are in large fights it may take them a few minutes to get back to you with an answer, do not percieve this as rude, it just happens sometimes.

6. Use some WXP and regular XP boosters, if you see your group on a winning streak in fights, take a killstreak xp booster. Use foods and utilities, if you wanna go cheap and effective, use Saffron Bread or whatever food of your choice that gives additional -20% condi duration + the 5% utility stone or crystal (you dont need to go 6%)

7. Play 1 full weekend with the group like you normally play (or equivalent of) and end up with 2-3 Gifts of Battle + some friends including PVX people that will do stuff with you outside of WVW once you’re done

8. Profit all around

Now, if you play on a server that is way off its timezone, it would help if you posted which server and time, then you may have some difficulties. But even then there are always small teams running around they just don’t tag up too often. Ask in your map chat / team chat. You will still do much, much better as part of a small team then trying it solo. Small team builds are focused more on mobility and less on tank, not too hard to do either just swap runes or traits for 25% movement and add a movement utility.

So in a nutshell, you need to find your team mates, no matter their size, and just go with the flow. The more survivable your build is, the less you die, the faster things will go.

It’s fine the way it is. If you really want Twilight bad enough, you’ll put on the big people armor and get it done. At one point you had to do map out all of the WvW zones like you do in PvE to get world comp so it could be worse.

One of my guild mates needed the GoB for his legendary and this acutally got us back into WvW. A completed one and a half reward tracks in two evenings (about 9 hours totally) with the guild buff and the experience buff to get more reward track progress.

The GoB is actually one of the parts of a legendary that requires you to put some time into the game and not just grind gold and materials… so I think it’s in a pretty got spot right now.

But I find that Edge of the Mists is actually easier for me to deal with. There is slower reward track gain than what you get in the WvW borderlands, even with boosters, but that might be something to look into. There’s frequently zergs running around just capping locations and there’s the occasional skirmish.

Just another suggestion to toss in the hat with the others.

That’s what I ended up doing. I’m the same as you in regards to the anxiety, except with my condition it makes my hands shake among other things (which is why I don’t PvP, it’s literally bad for my health).

However, following a zerg in EotM got the Gift of Battle reward track done eventually, but I haven’t been back since.

Well, it certainly backfired for some players, like myself. The exceedingly slow drip of XP and rewards combined with the long walk v walk to get anywhere makes for a very uninspired play experience.

Funny story: I bought all the PvP participation I’d ever need for my legendaries. And I’d do it again, 4 more times if I had the other resources lined up.
WvW ends up inflicting me with two of these sinks, except I can’t buy my way out of the Gift of Battle, for some odd reason.

WvW Big Spender – 80 potions = 1 reward track

The gift of battle takes 2 evenings or 1 afternoon in WvW. I know because Ive done it twice. Not too bad hey? Im die hard PVE and do not like WvW , but those poor die hard WvW’ers have to spend months finishing PVE maps all of core tyria for their gift of explorations ….. hmmm … ponder that for awhile hey?

Sorry love, I disagree with moving it. At first I was frustrated then I saw the viewpoints of those who love WWW but hate the PvE aspect. If they have to suffer with exploration, we should have to suffer with WWW.

As an almost exclusive WvW player, I find it ironic and disgusting that PvE players want to avoid WvW. As if it wasn’t bad enough that WvW players have to do loads of PvE to get Legendary weapons, we also now have no access to the new Legendary Armour.

I’m disgusted that you want to shove our gamemode off the table entirely.

The solution to the problem you have is to make WvW fun, not to move the Gift of Battle elsewhere.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

Indeed. The entitlement of some Pve players is abhorrent. 8 hours or less of wvw vs the amount of hours it takes to get 100% map completion. No contest.

Well, most of the PvE players are here for the fashion wars. WvW is fun, but they don’t even care about doing a little research on witch server they are or what uptimes they have…. Let’s say someone’s on SBI where most of the players get online at NA peak hours, and the said PvE player starts saying “Oh no! WvW is dead! there are no people here! This game mode is boring!! blah blah blah~”
The most probable cause? He’s playing on a SEA timezone like Dragonbrand or any other non NA peak hours.
2d most probable cause? He’s roaming alone on a T1-T2 server -.-; (Well, not like it matters too much since the glicko system seems to be making havoc with the matchmakings anyways)

I don’t want to be in a game mode that doesn’t want me. The specific PvP reward was designed wisely, allowing me to buy my way into the tokens, while PvP enthusiasts can sell them. They get extra rewards for their play time, and I don’t have to clog their queues with my noobness and disinterest.

There’s even a similar token in WvW that I had to buy very many of. But it does not apply to Gift of Battle, and I can’t comprehend why. Those who like WvW should get rewards from those who aren’t interested, and this seems like a perfect vector for it. In a sense, it’s similar to being rich and avoiding a draft to which I am a conscientious objector. (Okay, that’s a terrible analogy.)

We don’t want to shove WvW off the table (at least some of us believe in live-and-let-live), we just don’t want to be a part of it. Ever.

The solution is not for me “to make it fun”. That is not my job. ANet devs get paid to make WvW fun. But there’s a significant flaw: WvW players. New borderland? Don’t like it. Adjustments to match-ups and progression and other core mechanics? Hate it. Not good enough. Any attempt to introduce server population imbalances is met with sneers and complaints. It’d be even worse if there was “getting PvE in my WvW” by making the NPCs actual do something other than sit there waiting to be farmed for allegiance.

I suppose the point is, why should PvE players attend a game mode that, quite frankly, even WvW players seem to constantly loathe?

Again the Devs wanted players to play multiple game modes to acquire Legendary items, hence the specific Gifts from Gamemodes, you want to negate that game design because it’s inconvenient for you to spend at a minimum 4.3 hrs in a game mode to acquire something, 8.5hrs max with minimal effort that you can even AFK through almost completely. Yet players in WvW had to endure anywhere from 16-20+ hrs of completely active gameplay in a gamemode they don’t enjoy, you don’t have a problem with that because it’s not an inconvenience for you

Again play the game as it was designed, if you actually wanted the item you would get what is needed instead of complaining about it to be changed for your convenience

You do realize that the Gift of Battle is obtainable without actually playing WvW right?

The game is not designed to require WvW play. It can be obtained by spending badges of honor awarded from content played outside of WvW.

The BoH Vendor has nothing to do with it. You don’t recognize the Big Spender daily achievement? Walking from the waypoint to the Seige vendor is hardly active WvW gameplay. How about the Karmic converter that randomly gives a Box of WvW Supplies?

Well that’s fine and all I suppose. I’m fairly close to completing it after several days of attempts and genuinely boring gameplay. But as to your point about people having to spend 16-20 hours for the gift of exploration. I get it. But no one is saying that one makes the other okay. Just because we don’t want to do WvW, doesn’t suddenly negate the complaints of the people who primarily enjoy wvw.

One person doesn’t like doing open world, the other doesn’t like wvw. If that’s your argument for why nothing should be changed because the WvW players have it tougher that doesn’t make sense. You should be looking to change THAT part of the game as well. Not coming into other threads and lauding your complaints onto us because you have it harder. Either way, I’m tired. Maybe I’ll come back later.

I read some post it took 16-20 hours to finish map completion nowadays?

I don’t recall i finish map completion in such a short time period, i remember the last poi in enemy borderland tower next to citidel took me couple weeks to obtain. Especially i was not interested to play wvw at all by that time. Got rekt countless of time running around wvw. I as a newbie thought that capturing a guarded tower is almost impossible mission at all as everytime i saw people taking tower by hitting the gate with their attack skill instead of siege. O man 10+ mins to break the gate… I have no idea there are siege anyway… until years later i set foot in wvw.

So we don’t have wvw map completion to do now? What is left to be done in wvw to justify obtaining a GoB then?

O right, the reward track, it is below 1% effort compare to the wvw map completion seriously.

Wow the entitlement is strong still, The GoB takes less time than the GoE to acquire most than 4 times as fast, dedicated WvW players don’t want to spend 16-20 hrs(can be a lot longer if not speed clearing) in PvE to get GoE but they do if they want a legendary, when a dedicated PvE player only have to Spend 8.5hrs max ata minimum of 4.3 hrs to get a GoB see the disparity yet?

If anyone has a case it’s the WvW players that have a better case to get GoE added to WvW than it is for GoB to be added to PvE since there is almost no time investment comparatively for GoB.

GoB can be effectively Afk’ed through all that’s needed is every ten minutes slap a yak after spending 5 mins to build participation. While PvE map completion requires a lot of Active play to be done in a reasonable time.

Spot on here…

WvW players are the most neglected player base in the game. So many seasoned players have left the game because PvE is the clear focus.

I had no desire to become a WvW player until I was forced into WvW to complete map completion. (At least be grateful Anet doesn’t make you do that anymore) Long story short, I became a WvW player and now find PvE boring.

Have no fear though friend. It certainly looks like Anet has given up on WvW so your GoB may be added to a new raid or something in the future.
