I’ll make this short.

A few nights ago I managed to find a method of kiting mobs in one of the Fractal paths that allowed me to solo that part of the dungeon that would otherwise require the team to have near-seamless coordination to complete it at the same speed. It made things easier for my group as a whole, but it wasn’t easy in itself. I was juggling cooldowns and dodges, and one slip would have left me licking the floor in an instant – similar to how people ran UWSC and FoWSC back in GW1, which is where my uncertainty comes from. I wasn’t hacking the game or taking advantage of resources no other player had access to. I was just outsmarting game mechanics and redistributing the group’s responsibility to myself. But Anet has shown a tendency to come down pretty hard on anyone that isn’t playing their game the way they expect people to. What are the community’s thoughts?

Some additional info:
Profession – Elementalist
Weapons – Scepter/Dagger
Fractal Level – 23

Is the exploit harmful to the wider community? If not then no but do the whole game a favour and let ANET know via the support ticket so that they can look into whether or not it needs a fix.

I believe what you were doing sounds like player skill, not an exploit. ^^ I would consider an exploit to be if you found a gap in the mechanics or pathway, not kiting them using your skills to the best advantage.

I used to abuse pre-nerf Evasive Arcana and solo kite/tank bosses endlessly, does that count?

As long as you’re not abusing terrain glitches (I’m looking at you, noobs that jump below Jade Maw to kill 2 tentacles), it’s fine.
If for some reasons you found some terrain the AI can’t access or can’t attack you while in or gets stuck or takes uncommon behaviors then it’s a bug.

But if you’re playing like say an unicorn Thief rollin’ n’ bleedkitin’ stuff to death then it’s intended gameplay because mobs are working at their full efficiency, it’s just your build that allows you to avoid damage or cripple-kiting things.

Unless you mention the specific situation / method I doubt anyone can give you a final say on this tho.
If you want to be the “smarty” who keeps basic stuff everyone already knows as an area 51 secret we can’t really help.

Its not exploiting because kiting is a part of the game. Same as using ash legion spy kits todo some parts of fractals or reviving someone.

Hello,

While what you describe doesn’t look like an exploit, please keep in mind that only our customer support team can decide what is consider as an exploit.

If you are not sure of something, please send your question to exploits@arena.net. And remember the following: “taking advantage of resources no other player had access to.”, as this is the first question you should ask yourself when you are not sure of something.

Thank you for your contribution

That’s actually the reason why so many people keep second guessing everything they do. People are scared that they may get banned because something they did daily will suddenly become classified as an exploit. I too asked questions at the mentioned e-mail adress, and while they were friendly and helpful, they didn’t give me a decisive no.

Keep in mind, I understand that a solid yes or no is a dangerous thing to give, for it may be used against them later. But there are things that have me second guess myself, which I wouldn’t even consider in other games. Things ranging from buyinglow/sellinghigh at the Trading Post to making the Troll fight Kohler.

Bottom line is, I’m scared I may one day end up losing my account. Even such simple things like leaving my turrets underwater with no way to blow them up again when back on land, could get me banned. And quite frankly, I don’t want to get banned…

If you can read this then it is proof that ArenaNet’s moderators just, kind and fair.

I don’t want to disagree with the input of the mod, but I wanted to offer up a suggestion. Robert Hrouda has weighed in on several videos posted in the dungeon sub-forum showcasing solo runs. In some cases, he’s able to say that a thing is just good game play, and in one case (warrior lupicus solo) he found a bug in Reckless Dodge by watching the submitted video.

Might be worth bringing your tactic to light in that sub forum and asking the question more directly there.

Assuming I’m thinking of the same thing you are, how is that a glitch? The level design sort of leads you to that platform. o.O
