There. You hit the nail on the head.
In my many years of working experience, this is exactly the type of thing that someone who desperately wants to justify their paycheck (but knows they actually do not deserve it as they aren’t really qualified) would do. And that a boss that doesn’t really care about the results, and has the paycheck safely secured, would approve. I’ve seen it soooo many times.

And that goes for virtually all achievements. It’s crazy that it works (our brains are incredibly easy to trick), but they’re nothing else.

“Hey, you made it to lvl80! Here, have an achievement!”
“Good, good, you salvaged enough items. Here, an achievement for you.”
“You did 4 events in this zone! How nice of you. Have an achievement.”

I always get a bit perplexed when people tell me that they’re in for the AP. Does this… motivate… you? Exactly how boring is your day that achievement points can motivate you? O.o

The points themselves don’t motivate me, but I would like the armor locked behind them. AP is just the grind for that particular set of items, much like anything else in the game.

If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t care about them in the slightest, and the devs know that. Hence locking exclusive items behind them.

If you do care about AP, you have to do a much shorter and less specific list to get it.

Wait, what?

How is “Do 4 events in Kessex Hills” less specific than “Do 5 events”?

And here’s to “the strange people in this thread that care about AP”: you realize that AP are just some grind to get rewards from the AP chest like specific weapon and armor skins, do you? And that horizontal progression is all this game is about? How strange to be interested in the things this game has to offer.

This is a horizontal progression game where at least 4 different weapon and armor skin types are locked behind AP gain (Zenith, Hellfire, Radiant, and Pinnacle so far). People who play vertical progression games grind for increased stats. People who play horizontal games grind for looks. It has nothing to do with how boring their day is.

True. The idea to lock “main” rewards (which skins are in a game like GW2) behind achievements was one of the worst I’ve seen so far (in any video game). Titles and mounts in WoW are ok, they are fluff there. Skins aren’t fluff here, they’re the main horizontal progress component.

Even then, that’s just one set of skins. A fairly meh one due to how comically overdone the effects are (YMMV). Not really much reason to do something I would not otherwise want to do. I do dailies because I actually figure I might go to that zone, farm some Iron which I need anyhow while I’m there.
Or because I happen to be in WvW and that keep needs help. Hell, they motivated me to do a lot more WvW again. Not that stupid buff, the dailies did!

The dailies did motivate me to kill an occasional dolyak, stand in a ruin doing nothing and buy some liquid world xp several times over the past 2 weeks. For me, that’s indeed a lot more WvW.

I don’t think you understood my post. The two groups you specifically replied about…

First group, the people who care about AP. Who want 10 AP per day. Previously, to get 10 AP per day, you had to, for example: do 5 events, gather 20 nodes, apply 50 conditions, gain a level, revive 10 things, do 4 events in the Shiverpeaks, do a Story Dungeon, kill 10 players in WvW and capture 3 camps in WvW. You can replace any of the above with do 3 PvP matches or get 5 PvP kills, if you like. But you’d have probably done those as well, for the full 12 AP. Now the list is shorter and easier.

Second group (for which you quote only a tiny portion of the sentence, which does rather change the meaning), “the strange people in this thread who massively, massively care about getting AP, but only about getting a small amount of it per day.” If you have read this thread, you will have noticed people complaining that they didn’t previously mind about not getting the full 10 AP per day, but are so attached to their 1 AP per task (but not for all 10 tasks. Only for a few tasks), that this new system absolutely requires them to complete the daily. It’s a rather labored argument, but some people have been quite strident about it. For those people, who only got maybe 5 AP per day, they need only do their daily every other day, to maintain parity with the old system.

The attitude of this thread surprised me.

I think naturally new dailies will be added, so other than that this system is great. The PvP dailies allow you to get 3 track rewards from 1 game if you win sometimes! This system is slightly more effort with much greater rewards.

And to have stuff handed to me when I log in that I used to have to play for? That’s enough to make me smile.

Literally the only other thing we need than new additions to the dailies is being able to access that daily log in reward screen manually.

Daily “complete 4 events in [map]”

====> lower the soft cap on Megaserver population for that specific daily map.

The goal of this daily is to have fun doing events and re/discovering them. Not to struggle to get to events on time and be able to hit some bad guy before he dies. With soft megaserver cap lowered (by half !), we won’t have hordes of players rushing to each event.

Here is my general feedback split between the positives and the negatives:
POSITIVE:
Daily Login Rewards
Daily login rewards. This is a nice system, feels rewarding just for returning to the game.

NEGATIVE:
Daily PvE Achievement Variety
Too few options for PvE daily achievements. You’re pretty much railroaded into what the random generator gives you for the day. Some of these activities take considerably longer than what was required of former dailies.

In my case (and probably true of a number of others) I work a day job and juggle time with the family. The daily is quite literally the only thing I do in the game during weekdays, just before I go to work.

Extending the time it takes for me to complete them (because that is all the time I have) makes me lean more towards not playing at all – having the reverse effect of what you’re trying to achieve, it would be more beneficial for me to actually login, claim my login reward and log out.

Previously it took me 10-30 minutes to complete the bare minimum for the daily. Now, I could have to wait around for 2 hours for a specific dragon to spawn, or try and fight a zerg to get a chance to even tag a single event.

Harsh for new players
I rolled a new character recently just for fun. Thought I’d do the daily on my new character. Not a chance. Fight Jormag as a level 3? Sure! Clear events in Timberline falls as a level 3? Not a problem. This highlighted to me that this daily system is only for established players. The system is quite unworkable for new players. The chance of you being able to complete the daily meta as a new player through PvE achievements alone is practically zero. Sure, you might get one achievement to chop down some trees, but that would be it.

Reward vs Time
Some people have highlighted that yes, it takes more time, but you get more reward. This is true, but I would prefer the choice. Like I said, I would happily login, do a quick 30 minute rush around before I go to work (even if it was lower reward) than spend half my day trying to do a small handful of achievements (time I can’t spend due to work) for slightly more reward.

  • Thoughts on WvW Dailies *
I don’t really have any particular slant on the wvw dailies, although I have seen some amusing behaviour. For example, when a wvw daily was to capture towers a wvw commander specifically avoided towers in the edge of the mists. Another observation – wvw is still super generic compared to pve – “Capture a tower” rather than “Capture longview”. I don’t think this is a bad thing, but contemplate how annoying/chaotic it would be if you had the latter rather than the former.
  • Thoughts on PvP Dailies *
I don’t play PvP that much so can’t really form an opinion of how the system differs for PvP players.

HOW TO IMPROVE:
Just add more variety to your list. 4 PvE dailies is far too small, ensure that there’s always 3 items that are achievable for someone who has literally rolled a brand spanking new character and you’re gold.

Dailies work slightly differently for new players/accounts -

The number of available achievements per day is based on the highest-level character on an account:
Levels 1–10: 1 achievement per category
Levels 11–30: 3 achievements per category
Levels 31–80: 4 achievements per category

I believe others have said that the actual achievements are different as well so instead of Claw of Jormag they got a low levelled World Boss. Admittedly I don’t have an account to test this (I have quite a few 80’s :-P ) so I can’t confirm the truth of this.

So those players who already have a level 80 and are using the dailies as a way to level up an alt, the way I used to play ( no longer – I refuse to level a character under the new trait system) are out of luck.

I’m wondering if Anet is trying to discourage the creation of alts. Most things they have changed in the game from the new trait system to this daily rework is detrimental to alts.

The reward is soul-bound to whichever character you log in with, it seems. If you wish to pick it up, you will need to log in with the original character.

(I tried ‘saving’ it yesterday, but could only retrieve it with the original (first) character I logged in with.)

Something to keep in mind when logging in.

Good luck.

Perhaps you mean “claiming the reward” is bound to the character that first logged in. The actual chest you get from logging in is Account Bound so you should be able to just put it in the bank.

And I guess people are conveniently not remembering that you get XP for actually performing the actions for which you get the rewards…maybe I want THAT XP on my lower level character too! And maybe I created my lower level character in the first place because I wanted to play that character – what a concept.

Yet people make fun of me when I say that choice has been removed from Dailies.

WvW and PvP are available at any level as you can just walk through the portals to get there. You don’t get informed about them until levels 18 and 22. Big difference. Also, I saw a bunch of people being trounced for complaining about having high level choices on their low level characters – people were saying that low level characters have choices appropriate to their level. So when I logged into my 37 Guardian today, why do I have: “Daily Inquest Golem Mark II” which is in Mount Maelstrom? I’m supposed to take my level 37 character to Mount Maelstrom?!

I was about to suggest that it should be tweaked so that didn’t happen, but . . .

If that got tweaked so it didn’t happen, who would log on to their 80s when they could log onto some level 10 mule and get “level appropriate” tasks which were far far easier than otherwise?

Seriously. Who would do the tougher set where you need to do 3 when you could log into a mule character and only have to do 1, chosen to be appropriate to their low low level?

Harsh for new players
I rolled a new character recently just for fun. Thought I’d do the daily on my new character. Not a chance. Fight Jormag as a level 3? Sure! Clear events in Timberline falls as a level 3? Not a problem. This highlighted to me that this daily system is only for established players. The system is quite unworkable for new players. The chance of you being able to complete the daily meta as a new player through PvE achievements alone is practically zero. Sure, you might get one achievement to chop down some trees, but that would be it.

Dailies work slightly differently for new players/accounts -

The number of available achievements per day is based on the highest-level character on an account:
Levels 1–10: 1 achievement per category
Levels 11–30: 3 achievements per category
Levels 31–80: 4 achievements per category

I see, wasn’t very obvious though. Thanks for clearing that up.

I believe others have said that the actual achievements are different as well so instead of Claw of Jormag they got a low levelled World Boss. Admittedly I don’t have an account to test this (I have quite a few 80’s :-P ) so I can’t confirm the truth of this.

I do have an account to test this and it’s indeed true. I’ve even posted screen shots in other threads.

Well feel free to update the wiki then. It is apparently completely incorrect.

One could of course actually try stuff in-game before raging about it though, seeing as the wiki is maintained by players and have never really been 100% correct.

Did remove the level parts where I could find them.

I’m still giggling, yes, because apparently you’re not playing it to have fun but to do a checklist. A checklist you imply isn’t fun, therefore you’re playing it to not have fun.

Me? I just ignore the checklist or wait until it’s something I want to work with. The AP ain’t going anywhere, I’ll still be able to earn it next time around. I have more important things to do, like try to actually work on those sub-80 characters instead.

That’s great that you prefer to ignore Dailies if they don’t already fit in with what you’re doing. If getting the AP isn’t very important to you then I don’t understand why you’re arguing in this thread with people who DO find it important.

Or you could see: “People who log into their 80s to do various tasks anyway?” If you have an 80 that you want to play anyway, unless its completely kitten the 80 level tasks aren’t exactly difficult. So why would you choose to login to a low level mule instead of playing the character you want?

It doesn’t matter how you dress it up, some options that were there before aren’t there anymore now. Hollowing out the game, one feature per major update.

Given the existent systems (downscaling and event-scaling) it should not matter whether there’s 20 or 100 people in the zone doing events. And whether they’re lvl15 or lvl80 downscaled to lvl15.

But it does. Significantly.

And that needs to change.

Well, that’s impossible without rendering 100+ gold equipment useless in 90+% of the zones. Your superior sigil of fire being downgraded to a minor or major one in zones < level 60? Even if you are in a level 60+ zone – which new level 60 player has the cash for the superior sigil? Your +a +b +c armor being downgraded to +a in low level zones and have a downscaled as it happens today? Lose all traits you worked long and hard for which are technically not available at that level?

It’s a nice idea how you could downlevel and I bet it would lose ANet about 80% of their player base … instantly.

It doesn’t matter how you dress it up, it took considerably longer for me to get 10 points before, doing stuff I didn’t want to do in the process than now.

For someone going for 10 points a day I have more options now, because after I get those ten points (usually in ten, fifteen minutes), I have the rest of my day free to play.

That’s a whole lot more options.

In my opinion this was a wonderful change that made the game more fun for me. Play time for me is nights and weekends. I’ve got to do my daily gathering which takes 8 minutes per character so that’s an hour. Grinding out 10-12 lengthy achievements was not a fun part of the day. I only had time to do 12 on the weekends. It could take 40 minutes some days, longer for 12. Now, it’s so easy and it takes much less time to get the three dailies done, plus loot! Thank you! I can actually -do- something at night!

People seem to throw the word “forced” around on this thread. For a lot of people, the daily changes amount to more freedom and greater rewards.

Er … less effort maybe if your main objective is to just get the dailies but for people who actually prefer to play the game (not play for the dailies) and who are used to the dailies just being completed while you play … the term “forced” is perfectly right.

I can mine 100 ore nodes, chop down entire forests and uproot every veggy available and still not get the daily because I am doing it where I need it (like, say, an area with platinum and iron and soft wood – as I run out of those fastest) but instead ANet wants me to mine copper in Queensdale …

Freedom? Our definitons seem to differ …

I’d just like to point out a few things that seems to have been glossed over in this thread, at least so far as I can tell.

Firstly, a lot of people who do not like this but aren’t complaining about it, are refraining from doing so because they don’t give a flying crap about AP. I don’t care about AP and I have 11500, I know only one guy in game who cares about getting every last piece of AP, only one. Most players do not care about these new dailies since all they really give is AP, but that does not mean they enjoy this system or that it is a good idea, because…

Second, I have so much AP because the old way of gaining it rewarded you for having fun, and set a reward to ‘kickstart’ your playtime. I almost always wound up having fun getting the dailies and then playing even more after my dailies were done. Under this new system, dailies are for AP chasers and no one else, and I can’t get myself to do them, let alone much of anything after them.

I hate this system. And ever since this nonsense started, I’ve been playing less and less. Why on earth was this changed for such a tiny portion for the playerbase as those players who are competitively seeking AP is beyond my comprehension. Players want to play the game, but it can be a bit daunting when you first log in, and broad but clearly rewarding dailies helped players past that, this new system fails to do that.

TLDR: The old system got people playing, this new one does not. And hardly anyone cares about AP anyway.

So you’re not free to TP to get the daily if you want. You don’t even have to, because most of the currency you used to get you get for free. Which means that most of the currencies require no action at all, certainlyi more freedom.

And if you wanted to get 10 points in the old system, this is more freedom.

If you don’t care about achievement points, this is more freedom. Just don’t do the daily you get the old rewards for the most part anyway.

That’s more freedom, not less.

Oh noes. I have to teleport and mine 4 things before I being playing?

Yes, it’s tragic.

You can kill guards in WvW from level 2. Choice is there you’re just choosing not to use it.

I’d love to see you kill a guard with a level 2 char … 1 … 1 … 1 … 1 … 1 … 1 … well, one thing it’ll teach … evading.

Oh noes. I have to teleport and mine 4 things before I being playing?

Yes, it’s tragic.

That’s a bit of an over-simplification.

Instead of playing my sub-80 whatever to finally get to level 80 and get my dailies I have to (a) check what the dailies are (b) pick a level 80 char (most of the time) and teleport to that area and © put the xp scrolls in the bank so that after being done I can (d) get my sub-80, telport to the bank, use the XP scrolls and then I can start playing …

The new system is way faster but it requires you to stop what you intended to do, do the dailies as required (at a much faster rate) and then get on with what you wanted to do …

It also differs what type of daily (and reward chest!!) you’re after:

PvP – usually 2 dailies require you to play a specific class. It’s ok when you do that in a farm arena but in real PvP you’re a liability with a class you’re not used to playing and it makes for terrible team setups at time

WvW – they’re ok but they should make higher structures fulfill lower structure requirements so that when you capture a keep or SM you’d fulfill “capture a tower” and when you capture SM you should also fulfill “capture a keep”. It’s kinda crazy that after an 1 1/2 hour battle you finally stand in SM and stilll have to get the tower for the daily – especially since the next 2h will be running defense in SM … (ok, part of the defense will probably be taking Anza and Durios to get their trebs down so that’s ok …)

PvE … hast the most choices to offer and such a meagre list of dailies. I’d be perfectly happy (!) with the new system if they’d just change zones to regions. So instead of – put your pick to 4 metal nodes in Queensdale – put your pick to 4 metal nodes in Kryta. Happy ..
