Ele

Mesmer

that’s pretty much it ., sure you have people who play other classes out in wvw or spvp , but when it comes to these 3 classes , lets face it folks they have got it made

survive ability check , damage check , condition removal check , heals

but lets go deeper as to why i make this claim

ele’s have a little thing i like to call versatility , they have speed , heals , damage , snares knockdowns , they got a lot of good things going for them ,

mesmers have what i would call back at you damage , they can mitigate stealth and send all the damage they would take , send it right back and if that is not impressive they can play keep away , you don’t want to fight one of these bad boys when doing one on one .

and then there is the thief , thiefs have this wonderful little thing i would call now you see me now you dont , lets face it folks , thief damage is kitten near insane , add to the stealth they use often to either escape from certain death or send someone to their grave with a nasty back stab , and play keep away . it is no mistake why they dominate in pvp .

im not complaining , im just simply stating the facts , these 3 classes are the holy trinity of guild wars 2 . im sure the other classes wont mind so much as they do their part really well out in pve , but when it comes to pvp /wvw . if you want to win , roll one of these 3 bad boys !!

My problem with the mesmers is that they seem to have no cooldown on creating new clones, as a ranger I excel in 1 on 1, but even when I take a clone down in seconds a new one is ready and I’m back to a full 4 “people”, you either get lucky enough to hit the original before your health gets too low or your done for, and running isn’t much of an option in WvW.

First of all; clones suck. The only use for them is diversion or exploding.

Second, phantasms have pretty hefty CD’s.

Try actually playing the class and the various weapon types they have access to and you’ll find that this is very far from the truth.

It amuses me to no end that ever since this game has been released many people seem to try and fit it into their nice preconceived notions of what an MMORPG should be. Since practically every MMORPG out there has rigid class structure and clearly defined roles then I guess so should GW2, right?

Fact is, you can’t. If you think that there are roles then your perception of the game is very skewed. You can, quite successfully run any dungeon with any 5 professions or 5 of the same profession. Is it easier to bring a specific ‘build’ of a particular profession for a specific dungeon mechanic? Perhaps. But this game truly is built on player ability far more than what profession brings what to the table. Youtube is quite packed with videos of all the different professions doing pretty incredible things based on player ability and not this massively skewed idea of total focus on the profession itself. Are there imbalances between professions? Probably. I will submit that no game out there can perfect the ‘balance’ between classes due to the massive amount of variables of interaction in the game.

So, let’s quit with these threads, please. There is no ‘trinity’ – there never will be and your own ideas of what professions are the only ones needed in dungeon runs just throws up a big huge sign of ignorance and only wrongly perpetrates this idea that only certain classes are needed in dungeon runs and all the others are useless.

i said nothing about running dungeons , i said pvp. learn to read better

I did for a while, wasn’t for me, just with the weapon abils I did get though I was never alone, and I stopped about level 5. And It can’t be that far from the truth as whenever I run into them in WvW they always have at-least 2 clones out.

Its not that far from the truth tbh. If I want to spec for it I can put out clones every time I dodge and I get vigor on crit, put out a clone and stealth (40 sec cd), put out 2 clones (45 sec cd), teleport and make a clone (10 sec cd) and that’s not counting the phantasms, some of which have very short cds (weapon skill ones being 12-18 sec, util. ones a bit longer). And that’s just staff/gs, other weapons may be faster, not bothered to check for this post.

Still: clones are squishy as hell so AoE will rip them up, they stand still and are very easily distinguishable from a player who dodges and uses skills, whilst they are out im not shattering which is where mesmer’s serious dps comes from on many builds.

When I’m playing my Ranger I don;t have much of a problem with Mesmers. But then again, that’s because I also play one so I know what to look for. I suggest, like the other guy said, you go back to play Mesmer for a bit more. Know your enemy.

Oh wait they are gonna nerf aoe, so clones gonna live longer, thieves will take less damage with the only ability that can currently damage them and their 100% stealth. Good going Anet, lets everyone roll thief/mesmer.

Mesmer shatters are AoE so they might actually see a nerf.

But those are 3 of the worst classes in PvE.

What? I’d take any of them over a Ranger or Engi. Mesmers/eles offer great group buffs and sustained AoE dmg whilst Thieves do great single target dmg and can stealth rez saving your group from a wipe more reliably than any other class.

I actually celebrate these professions for the reasons you describe. To the extent a profession seems complete, offers build synergy, and allows creative play I believe it’s a testament to the work done in their design. One would hope that game designers are aware of where they have succeeded and where they have met with less success. There are bright folks at Anet so they are probably aware of this.

So, I offer a toast to the Ele, the Thief, and the Mesmer. May they live long and prosper and never see the dark shadow of the nerfbat. And, may their good fortune come to all the professions of Tyria.

Actually, I don’t think they’re that bad, they just need some tweaks and everything will be alright. I really think with a bit of work and good feedback, ANet can really make the classes as balanced as possible.

This is definitely a strong combination for all the reasons listed here. I’ve run around in said groups and it’s great. One thing not mentioned yet is that this crew has a great capability at dealing with enemy buffs and the conditions. They can also make use of every single combo field and finisher in the game, which imo, is how these groups can really shine.

Their stealth and portal capabilities make it nice for fleeing zergs, too.

You don’t play a mesmer, do you?

I have a clone-spitting phantasmal damage build that creates clones on dodges, clones with weapon skill, clones with utility skills. Cooldown on my weapon phantasm is 12 seconds.

My clones stack vulnerability and bleeds. My phantasms stick 7-8 bleeds per attack. I also have stealth because it’s a really mean trick to go invisible versus thieves.

Yes, actually I do play a mesmer, I just don’t use a clone build. My traits are all stacked to buff my phantasms for my normal build.

I’m not a fan of shatter builds.

Well the holy trinity pertains to PvE, and your just kittening about PvP balance (clearly WvW since you clearly don’t know anything about tPvP play).

The holy trinity in Gw2 is: Support, Control, DPS
But this only pertains to PvE…

There’s no Holy Trinity anything in this game. The term is ridiculously overused, sometimes because “there must be” one. It’s not Holy, it’s no Trinity, and it’s not on GW2.

Roll the “bad boys” you wish-you can win with any one Profession. Mainly, just have fun playing your character the way you want.

He’s right, they are the holy trinity of PvP. A lot of people just don’t play enough sPvP to know that.
