The PVP doesnt fit into the game world
Good point OP. xD
It’s just there for fun I guess.
Well first off the threat of an ancient powerful dragon that wants to turn everyone undead is a pretty good catalyst for cooperation. I think if our entire planet faced a threat from aliens that just wanted to eradicate all of us we’d learn how to work together pretty quick.
And I. keep seeing the mention of ‘why guilds wars if no wars on guilds?’ I think the answer is from gw1 (though I haven’t played it so I can’t elaborate) and seeing as how this game takes place further down the timeline from that some things may have changed.
But it wouldn’t make much sense for a company that’s using the same lore, characters, races, and world to just go with a completely different name for their game that follows the timeline. At least I think so.
I think of WvWvW as three different realms clashing with each other and each trying to take over each others world. As for sPvP, I never touched it so I have no clue.
From a lore standpoint, WvW and sPvP are in the Mists, the realm of the dead. It’s replaying past wars and battles.

There are already factions within the world fighting regardless of the outside threat, it’s just represented as a bunch of NPCs. This could easily be translated into open world PvP for a PvP server.

For me WvW is the new form guild wars.
In the end the battles that matter in there are large guilds battling each other to rule WvW.
WvW does a much better job at comparing guilds; while in GW1 a GvG battle was down to team comp and skills for the most part, in GW2 coordination, tactics, dedication, diplomacy, intelligence, administration, politics and leadership are all very important.
Being able to get support from other guilds and the server, undermining the morale and willpower of the other clans, spying, army management… this goes a long way in going deep into GvG compared to a few minutes of pew pew in some instance.
This indeed fits the lore as I see it, it’s just a comeback of the old guild wars with the difference we are now able to enjoy all aspects of GvG rather than just mere combat.
This is the most unsatisfying aspect of Tyria and GW2. We all have be heroes in the world. And the pvp areas aren’t even part of the world.
I really liked games where the pvp objective and fights took place in the normal actual gameworld. In Lineage2, my clan owned a castle and it was in the main game world. It meant if you were in my kingdom you paid tax to my clan. Or in WAR, the pvp lakes were on the same map as pve.
The point of the story is that the races arent strong enough to fight each other and deal with all the threats they have at the same time. One of the problems with alot of two faction games is the PvE becomes silly because the Big Bads are so weak that we can fight them while still engaged in a large scale open war with another faction. Who is the real threat?
The PvP being mostly focused in the mists allows for PvP and PvE to not undermine each other. Both are explained lore wise and avoid stepping on each others toes.
Maybe later we will see factional PvP in the sense of us acting as mercenaries similar to how the Luxon/Kurzick PvP played out in Factions. Currently though open war between the main races isnt feasible.
As for the world being peaceful, when did you walk outside a capital city? The humans are at war with bandits, krait and centuar. The charr have an eternal war against the ghosts, a running war against the Flame Legion and the issue with the Branded. The asura have the equivilant of corperate war going on between their labs. The sylvari have conflict with the Nightmare court. And then there is the constant threat from the EDs.
How is this a peaceful world? What is a world at war to you?
They have plans to implement Guild vs Guild PvP.
I can’t recall the lore exactly (I do believe its very vague) but the war god Balthazar, created/gave access to the mists to all the realms so that they may engage in never ending battles for glory, etc, etc.
Fun fact: Asura refer to Balthazar as “the human god of fire and kicking but”
