The Portal Stone and my story
The RNG gods are the ultimate trolls.
Never understood the hang up about being a beta tester.
A company is asking you to do a job for free so that they do not have to pay others to do it.
Early access acts like a movie spoiler ensuring that when you then pay for the game/expansion that you helped the developer to finish (getting a free copy of the game or expansion would make this process better I guess) it has less of a wow factor.
On top of wanting to work for free and having to pay for the product (in part) of your work you are now allowing not getting this, “prize,” to affect you psychologically.
Don’t.
You won.
Yea trust me i put it into perspective as you just did but i’ll admit when i first started farming it was originally with the drive of a fanboys heart that kept me going and then as people made fun of me farming so much i simply did it out of principal just to get the kitten item because i had put so much work into it.
why would you even want to be beta tester? its their job to test and fix the bugs you payed for game already and supporting them with cash shop. I don’t see point on grinding so much for 1 item that will eventually expire and u get kicked from beta.

This right here. I was beyond stoked when I got a beta key for World of Warcraft’s Warlords of Draenor. Played it as much as I could. When the expansion finally dropped, I only played for about a week before I started to lose interest. Everyone around me in-game was excited and having fun discovering all the new content. I was already feeling the “been there, done that” kind of apathy. Taking part in the closed beta was fun, for sure; but ultimately, it ruined the excitement of new content shared with friends when the xpac went live. I haven’t played WoW since about two weeks after WoD dropped.

That last part is where I think most people appear to get disappointed by the portal stone lottery. It’s random. You have two things really working against you. You can’t appreciably affect your chances of receiving it. And this is a limited access, closed beta where one can assume that most people playing the game will not be invited. I guess it’s like trying to work your butt off to buy a bunch of lottery tickets and not winning. You wonder why so many people, not just you, are disappointed.

Yea i know others are disappointed i just wanted to share my story and vent a little bit because i am very upset.
What they should of done is increase the chance for the portal to drop for every 1/10/20 events/mobs killed/completed in SW/DT, that way people who actually want to and try to get into the event actually have a chance.

I’m in the same boat so to speak. I’ve spent at least 50 hours although it likely to be more but not really been keeping an exact account and always base my estimates on the low side. That’s not including the hours spent that day of the patch before the patch was released because was not aware a patch was being released. Started that day around 07:00 GMT.
I wouldn’t say I’m upset about it though I’m usually not that lucky where RNG is concerned anyway. What I’m finding is that I’m completely focused on just that area of the game, not even been bothering to do dailies the last couple of days.
Trouble with being focused in such a way, it starts to become boring rather quickly, I was bored killing the same mobs over and over 2 days ago as I killed so many, hate to think how many I’ve killed since.
I do some of the events which helps keep it a bit interesting but the grinding mobs in between is the pits.
Problem is the more time you invest in such an activity the harder it is to just stop.
Actually the worst bit is when people link in chat the portal and say only been grinding for a few hours. It’s kind of like rubbing salt into the wound.
But you really shouldn’t get upset about it, just laugh it off.
Well like i said it put the stake in the heart when my friend who after all that time of making fun got it from doing vine wrath one time for like 5 minutes.. 50+ Hours over 5 minutes yea… it’s hard to not get upset at that.

It doesn’t seem fair but then life isn’t either. Sense of humour is probably one of the most important aspects anyone can have.
I usually do have one actually out of my entire guild i am usually the joker but this hit a little hard xD I just couldn’t find room to make jest of it.
I feel for you. Haven’t played 50+ hours yet, only about 20+ these last days, but still, its too much time spent in something you can do nothing about but have faith. Literally faith. I wished they’d do something less random, something that would reward the ones who work the hardest, and something you know you’re progressing. Because it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve killed VW, it doesn’t make you any closer to the beta key.
They could have made the beta key cost 10k bandit crests or something like that, if they wanted people playing at SW, and it would ensure that only those who works hard and want to be a beta tester actually get it. Otherwise, its no different than selecting random number of players from a player pool, and that would be less painful as well. I like the idea of making players work for the opportunity to play the beta, but it was poorly executed. RNG is always unfair, and makes our effort worthless. I don’t care about the 200 champ bags in my inventory right now (because I got tired of opening them after the last hundreds), I just want the beta key….
I’ll stop rambling now, but just for you to know that you’re not the only one suffering from the endless farming.
Hey Nurgle: sorry you weren’t the one to get the portal. I’m sure that must have been more than disappointing.
If you can, take a break from farming (and maybe from the game), and then come back, hopefully refreshed and excited for more. (I’m trying to take my own advice and playing less, since I feel a bit too much of the “been there; done that” syndrome after playing since headstart.)
That said, I have to admit I was really tempted to do a lot of farming to try out Chronomancer (although who knows if that’s possible). The preview makes it look like one of the most complicated and rewarding professions I’ve seen in a long time. The thing that stopped me from getting manic about it: I know I’ll be able to play it as much as I want when the expac goes live.
Anyhow, sorry your luck didn’t match your enthusiasm.
have you tried dry top? you might have better chance there since both the events and mobs can drop it.
You should never do an RNG thing if not getting it will upset you, especially if the odds of winning are tiny.
Tarnished Coast
You are too invested in an online game. Go out and get some fresh air before you end up needing to see a psychologist over a virtual construct.
Besides, there is no NDA on the beta, so everyone will be streaming it. There won’t be much difference to actually playing it, especially since it will save you from experiencing all the horrible bugs ArenaNet is infamous for. :p
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.
/i’m a lesbiab… lesbiam… less bien… GIRLS/
Thank you all of you for being supportive and receptive to my essentially venting topic xD you guys are the best you all really made me feel a whole lot better!
There is no need to farm for a beta key. We all get access.
ArenaNet will call it “Launch Day”, but we’ll know better.
