Q:
The "Show only the English" option...
It’s a controversial option that ANet added after Megaservers, there seem to have been alot of players having kitten about seeing other languages and going all “racist” (Don’t know the correct term, since citizenship doesn’t limit to races).
The option should be by default be disabled, but I dunno about now, since it was enabled when it was put into game..
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

It’s enabled by default, meaning people who don’t know about this feature (99,99% of new players and player who don’t look at patch notes and what not) will not see your chat if they have a different language client as you. Which would not be so bad if all language servers weren’t all lumped together into 1 mega server. Extremely frustrating.
The patch notes from 2 days ago suggests the feature is now disabled by default. As an NA player it simply hasn’t been an issue for me, but it looks like they listened to the complaints from those affected.
I’d suggest “xenophobic” as the term, FrostSpectre.
It was an emergency procedure from Anet to limit the amount of griefing and name calling after the introduction of megaserver in Europe, among which :
- calling any person who spoke german in the chat a nazzi (forum filter)
- asking any person who spoke french in the chat where was the white flag.
- calling any person who spoke spanish in the chat a gay.
etc….
Side effect of this decision : commanders couldn’t organize megabosses anymore since half the map could not hear them. It was a pain to tell everyone to turn off the filter so we could talk to each other.
As time passed, childish behaviour started to disappear, so now is a good time to allow players to talk to each other like in a normal MMO.
