I don’t understand; why not use your site as often as you do Reddit, FB , etc…? I shouldn’t need to visit sites I don’t use, for info or updates before they show up on the forums. I am not saying not to use social media but this site should be first and foremost, number one in updates.

Yeah. I mean, glad Ms. Bayer gets to have a job and all, but emphasizing social media when you don’t even put all the information on the main site first seems like a confusion in priorities.

And what’s with “This is where we talk to you – and more importantly, where you to talk to us –about what the Guild Wars 2 community is doing both in and out of game.” about the Facebook pg? You already have an entire set of forums for user feedback. Shouldn’t that be emphasized first?

Use social media: trend on twitter, get 5 million likes on facebook. Fine. But just give the official site all of that information you’ll be sharing thru the other media too, please.

If they want the type of interaction you would get on Facebook maybe they should change the structure and functionality of the forums to reflect that.

Regardless of that, I agree that it is silly that their own forums are not their primary form of communication to the community.

Yeah btw the “social side” of any game is defined by community content created outside that game’s social pages. So advertising your own game is not “social”, it’s pathetic to even deem it as such.

People have been saying this since launch. Of course, it was said on these forums…which clearly take a backseat to this social media stuff.

It would be lovely if everything that got posted on FB/Twitter/Redditt/Whatever also got announced on this forum.

But yea. Been saying that since launch. They’re still not doing it. Reminds me of a few other things that players have been saying….and ArenaNet ignores until it’s convenient to close the thread…

Hmmmm…maybe they need a Customer Relations Manager as well.

The official site should be a hub, while the social media daughter sites act like spokes, projecting what is found on the official site out in to the rest of the internet. They can even announce things first on the social media sites. But the official site should have all of the information on it when all is said and done. Or, in the case of interviews and such, a links section either as a side bar or its own page, to the information that really has to stay exclusive to other, non A-net sources.

(And when I say official site, I mean the rest of this guildwars2.com site, as well, not just the forums.)

Can’t expect much from some schools of thinking these days. They brainwash these marketing types into believing the latest hype then hand them a piece of paper as proof of their new found enlightenment. Then they get hired at a company based on that paper and upper management gets lost in the murky details of why their sales are tanking. “they have a paper! it’s obviously not their methods that are the problem!”

Social media is in turmoil at best, because people don’t like their personal information being farmed or sold, and they’ve been burned. See the thread on these forums about how GW2 didn’t get the 1mil “likes” they were begging for. Count the number of people who didn’t add a like simply because they don’t have or refused to use Facebook.

Even if social marketing is the “wave of the future” like so many seem convinced it is, a responsible company will have at least one location on their own site where they centralize news related to their products and services, keeping it up to date with the latest.

Can you imagine if these people had control over the game info itself? Instead of a rather comprehensive wiki, we’d have to keep a bookmark list of 20 or so sites as to where to find information about in game items or other game related material.

Where are my gem sales? I want gem sales! Nerf EVERYTHING!

Yeah it really makes no sense at all…

Rubi didn’t come from Facebook, she helped run Guru. Good or bad, it was the proper format for conveying information and more importantly actually DISCUSSING IT. Not even the Wiki was capable of that much to the Gnashing of Teeth of those who used it every day to stay in touch with the Devs back then….

The forum presence here is … well it’s pretty good atleast where people like Gaile are concerned. Every now and then Colin actually addresses some important inconsistency as well. (but it’s really rare). Meanwhile we NEVER EVER hear from the Artists when one of the single most pivotal things about this game is the artwork and skins everyone dragon-chases.

…There’s also tons of discussions to be had about PvE balance. Always has been always will be… So where’s the PvE balance team?? They don’t actually appear to have one. I guarantee if they put an opening for that position, they’d have 30,000 applicants by the end of the day and 3,000 of them would atleast know a thief from a ranger or why Berserker’s is scaling 4x times better on damage mitigation than Cleric’s is….

There’s an awful lot of bassakwardsness going on and not a single explanation to be found for it.

I’m okay with them using Facebook and Reddit to reach a wider audience but these forums should be the first and foremost authority on information pertaining to all things Guild Wars 2. While it’s great to have the option, I shouldn’t have to go to mmorpg to get the latest information on an upcoming event or head over to Facebook to find out the reason behind a hotfix. I should hear about it first from this website.

It wouldn’t even take much to implement a proper system. Just create a scrolling hotbox on the main page and give it the headings for the latest news topics with links to forums threads for more detailed information. That’s all you guys have to do! How hard is that?

Where does it say that they plan on ignoring this site in terms of information. Stop making mountains out of molehills. The social media are supplemental outlets. Calmate.

There are several things to note overall:

  • We have dozens of developers actively reading and posting on the official forums. Some developers choose to participate in the official forums and they do so because they want to talk to you and moreover, they are taking time away from working on the game to do so. Any time that they take to read and post on the forums is time that they are not spending working on the game. If you don’t see certain people posting on the forums, please understand that they’re working on the game and they would rather focus their efforts on the game itself. There will always be more fan posts than can anyone can ever respond to. The fact is, there are more of you than there are of us. A developer can easily spend their entire day not working on the game and just reading and posting on the forums, so if they choose to spend time working on the game, please respect their choice rather than berate them for that choice. By berating staff for their decision not to post on the forums, you might actually discourage them from posting in the future, and they may just decide to continue to lurk.
  • Our developers do not post on our official Facebook or Twitter channels. You have probably noticed that they aren’t signing any of their initials on the posts on Facebook and Twitter—at least if you followed any of those social media channels.
  • Different channels require different tactics in terms of engagement, which is why you will see posts that are different in tone and style to match the strengths of each channel. Forums are great for discussion, for example—which is why you will see a lot of developers like Colin and Devon and others directly communicating with you here. Social media is not as great for in-depth discussions, but great for other types of engagement, which is why you will see us posting videos of goings-on at the studio, pictures, and so on. Twitch is great for showing game play and game update previews, and Facebook, Twitter, and the forums are not as great for doing that sort of thing.
  • Our official social media channels are just as important to our overall community strategy as our official forums. The use of one communication channel does not preclude the use of the other. In other words, the use of social media and forums are not mutually exclusive.
  • People who actively read the forums are just a fraction of the overall user base. A lot of people who do not read forums will read social media, and we’d like to reach those people. The feedback from our fans on Facebook and Twitter has long been very positive with regard to our presence and engagement on these social media channels—way before the official forums even opened. You personally may not like social media, but that doesn’t mean that hundreds of thousands of other people have the same likes/dislikes as you. Something interesting to note is, as much as a handful of forum members complain about us using social media, we have never seen the opposite: we have never seen any members of our social communities complain that we use forums.

Some clarifications about specific items:

  • The Guild Wars 2 sub-Reddit is its own independent, third-party fansite community and it is not run by anyone at ArenaNet. To equate a few Reddit AMAs and a handful of Reddit posts with our official Facebook page is very misleading.
  • The official wiki is written entirely by fans for fans. We have a community manager that helps liaise with the wiki community, but the wiki is actually run by fans just like you.
  • Rubi was never involved as a staff member of Guild Wars 2 Guru.
  • Regarding hotfixes: they are posted as a reply to the Game Update notes, right here on the official forums. Example: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates/Game-Update-Notes-July-23rd-2013/ We do not post about hotfixes on Facebook (and this is something you would notice if you followed our Facebook page), however we will link to hotfix notes on Twitter. Please see the note above about playing to the strengths of each social media channel and the blog post itself about the usage of each type of social channel.
  • You can find out about upcoming events on the official Guild Wars 2 website, under Game Releases: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/

If you don’t like social media and you prefer traditional, old school forums, that is totally cool. We’ve got that for you. If social media is not for you, then it’s not for you. We’ve also got social media for fans who like that sort of thing.

Thanks for your attention.
