I’m I missing something? I’m leveling a theif right now (lvl 41) and there is a certain look and stat combo that I like right now. I play alot of WvW, a bit of PvE and just starting with dungeons with this Toon. I upgrade my armor/weapons as I loot (WvW is the best for this) and sometimes on the TP if a particular armor piece does not drop.

Now to keep my look, I need to use the Transmutation Charges right? Yes. Well, would’t that get kinda expensive after a while? I have 100% world on another Toon and don’t really do alot of map completion anymore. So my only access to T.Charges are from T.Stones (3:1) from the Gem Store. I don’t think so Tim. I need my gold for other stuff…

Did I miss something? I like the idea of the wardrobe and all, but why do I need to pay and pay and pay and pay and so on and so forth?

I … don’t really do alot of map completion anymore.

That’s how we got our stones before the wardrobe, that’s still the answer. Yes, it’s only one third as effective as before (which is annoying, I agree) – but it’s the only way without paying gold/gems. Just make a new character, explore the five racial cities and Lion’s Arch, delete and reroll to repeat.

Again, as someone with plenty of <80 alts, I do feel your pain… but that’s always been and still is the only solution. Unless you count the ridiculously rare chance that dailies will drop a charge; or a black lion key dropping and the chest dropping one.

Nothing hasn’t actually changed regarding transmution only that it has been revamped and made easier to customize a look. You can easily acquire charges trough pvp or as you said exploration. Before the feature pack I’d transmute my gear only when I felt this is the final look along with the stats.

If you are so desperate on changing your cosmetics, I have full faith in that if you truly want to get those charges, you’ll succeed. Don’t waste them every tenth lvl on your thief. Wait until you get to 80 then start to experiment with your looks. Constantly changing your look is a luxury. It was before feature pack and it still is.

So you have two FREE options, either do some world exploration or do PvP.

Whether the switch to transmutation charges instead of stones and crystals is an improvement depends largely on how you obtain them and what kind of gear you want to transmute.

Based on the 3stones:1charge conversion rate, after the Wardrobe update, transmutations under level 80 have basically tripled in cost. On the upside, you can now transmute level 80 gear with earned charges, which might be useful if you play a main character or two and didn’t have a use for your accumulated stones.

For another angle, here are the prices per unit. (Using the lowest purchase size, with the bulk pricing in parentheses.)

*Stones: 25 gems (20)
*Charges: 30 gems (24)
*Crystals: 40 gems (32)

So, in terms of gems, Charges are more expensive than stones (120%) but less expensive than Crystals (75%). Ultimately,

*If you buy items to transmute level 80 gear, it’s a substantial discount (a fourth off the old price)
*If you buy items to transmute <80 gear, it’s a slightly less substantial price increase (a fifth more expensive)

*If you transmute <80 gear with charges you earn from map completion, dailies, etc., it’s a slightly more substantial price increase (a third more than the old price)
*If you transmute level 80 gear with charges you earn from map completion, dailies, etc., you’re getting value out of those potentially useless stones you had piling up

Edit: Textile isn’t formatting my lists for some reason, so I’ve put some blocks in quotes to make it more readable.

While the switch to charges is good for people who focus on one or two main characters, it’s also significantly less friendly to people leveling up. I had a pile of transmutation stones leftover from my first character, and even more from my second, so I was absolutely free to make my third and fourth characters look however I please while leveling them up. Overall, I’ve got mixed feelings about it, leaning on the negative.

Ok, I didn’t know they can be acquired from PvP. (don’t do much PvP, maybe it’s time!)

When they advertised the Wardrobe, I felt like we’d be able to change our appearance more freely and with a cheaper alternative. I guess in my mind I wanted the 3:1 to go the other way. 3 Charges for 1 stone. Lol. Nope…

I’ll do what I did on all my other 80’s, and as someone else suggested, is to wait till 80 to tweak things.

Thanks for all the replies duds and dudettes.

I disagree; it wasn’t a luxury before the update, but it sure is now. 3 transmutation stones per map as opposed to only one atm? You could also keep runes and sigils before, you can’t do that anymore.

To put it into perspective: you need to do 6 map clearances for a full armour change as opposed to just 2 before. That’s not even taking into account weapons or back items. And that’s for one character only.

And just because you get some charges from PvP doesn’t make it a viable method of obtaining charges.

I understand some people might not care about this, but I think there are plenty who do care. Hopefully ArenaNet will finally say something regarding this issue.

Stop using gear that you find while levelling up if you can’t up with the problem. If you are being a scavenger and using random armors, why would you want to look nice, doesn’t it kind of not fit into your scavenger role?

If you want to look nice, use level 35 and level 60 rares from the Cultural armorsmiths in your racial city, and transmute those. They will last for a very long time and you won’t have to rely on drops to have good stats and damage.

It just sounds like alot of people just want to avoid giving ANet any money, and relied entirely on farming cities for 3 Transmutation Stones per city. Honestly, I can see where you are coming from, but you have to understand that these kinds of actions don’t help keep the game afloat, just like BLC key farming.

That’s mostly all it comes down to: it was farmable before, and now its not.

How do I know this? Because despite Transmutation Stones being available in the gem store since release, I never bought a single one from the store. I never needed to. I always had an overflow of them in my bank, even though I was simultaneously transmuting all eight characters for free. On my level 80s, I was even doing this with level 78 and 79 Exotics which were only a few stat points lacking.

Now do you really think its fair to receive 400+ gem store items for free, while all the people who wanted to use level 80 gear that looked nice had to spend a whopping 50g per every 25 Transmutation Crystals?

Its easy to say it was worse for low levels, but the truth is, high level characters have far more gear, because they have to keep many different weapons, several armor sets, different combinations of gear for runes, sigils, etc.

Its a simple fact, before now lower level players were getting everything for free.
