The Worst thing about the Per. Story changes
Cut or moved? I’m seeing posts saying it was moved.
RIP City of Heroes
Pretty sure it’s cut: Nothing of those missions is mentioned in the recap of any characters I have who are past that part, and for the one character I had that was right at the start, the only reward I get for finishing one of them is the cruddy loot bags they added to every Personal Story mission, no other rewards.
This is the dev post I’ve seen.

RIP City of Heroes
From what I understand from discussion here is that in the story journal itself the story steps aren’t showing up, but they’re in the same place. However, chapter 8 got butchered with the latter 1/3rd of it (Against the Corruption to The Source of Orr) being placed after the Fear storylines (and before Temple of the Forgotten God).
Edit:
From the update notes:
Chapter 7 is now focused on helping Trahearne cleanse Orr.
Chapter 8 is now focused on defeating Zhaitan. The story steps that were in Ch8 that involved helping Trahearne with his wyld hunt have been moved to Ch7.

Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Yeah, and two posts above that dev post is about how someone went from “Forging the Pact” to “Battle of Fort Trinity” without ever doing any of the Tonn missions.
Like I said before, I had a character that was on one those missions (the first Apatia one, in fact) and I did get the second Apatia mission right after that, but I didn’t get much of a reward: Just 3 loot bags, and no other reward. Maybe the reward itself is the bug, but I’d think a mission you were expected to be able to do would have a better reward than that.
Didn’t notice that post above the dev post then.
That’s horrible if so. Just. Simply. Terrible.
Who would think such is a good idea? And why would they do it? Now Battle of Fort Trinity makes no sense.

They just want enough nails to shut the coffin for good….
SPOILER ALERT!!!!*
I just happened to have a character at the “Forging the Pact” story step when this update went live, and just finished doing the redone chapter 7, and It’s TERRIBLE! It makes absolutely NO SENSE!
You go from your fort in Timberline Falls (which already makes no sense with Mordremoth’s Vines which aren’t supposed to appear until 2 years in the future) to fort Trinity in Orr, completely skipping over large stretches of land that we previously had to fight across to reach Fort Trinity. It’s as if Zhaitan didn’t even try to stop us after we got the stupid book (which we never hear about again anyway).
When we get there we magically have the orb that people doing the Apatia story line fought really hard to get, and we defend the fort. Then we suddenly, with absolutely no explanation, hop on an airship which has not ever been mentioned (or even invented yet I think) and go to the Royal Tombs in the Cursed Shore where Trahearne just randomly has an idea about the ritual to cleanse Orr. After that we do the next step and go to the Source of Orr to do the ritual again. Before we do the ritual there’s all sorts of pact people to talk to. Almost all of them refer to events that, under the new story order, HAVE NOT HAPPENED YET, but they speak as if they did. My character hasn’t even met most of them, yet she acts as if she’s done all sorts of things with them and they talk as if we’ve already done a long campaign through Orr to get where we’re at now. Multiple times they specifically mention catching the Mouth of Zhaitan, which we haven’t done yet!
After we cleanse Orr we go back to Fort Trinity where everyone is acting as if we’re ready to fly the airships to Zhaitan’s doorstep for the final battle, and when I talk to Trahearne he transfers all control of the Pact to me to finish Zhaitan while he recovers from the ritual. But then I have to report to him immediately afterwards to be sent to the Temple of the Forgotten God (which according to the NPC’s I talked with earlier, this and the following events already happened, plus Trahearne seemed to have recovered rather quickly) where I will meet Sayeh for the first time (who in the previous instances spoke to me like we were friends), see the Mouth of Zhaitan for the first time (who has already been killed) and see my first Eye of Zhaitan (which according to the king of Orr guy in the last instance I already freed ALL of the other royal family members who were turned into eyes).
This is also when I realized that the Greatest Fear storylines were completely removed! I was shocked and checked my main who had already finished the personal story two years ago and looked at his story journal. It showed the personal story as it is under the recent changes, so the Greatest Fear storyline was not there. Those missions I did with Apatia a couple years ago have been erased and no longer exist, never to be done or seen again! This is extremely disappointing because I always enjoyed doing the personal story, but now it makes absolutely no sense for new characters and is out of order and illogical. Plus we’ve now lost a whole story arc on alts, which now renders our greatest fear choice meaningless and makes the story feel even more all the same each time we do it ( as if it wasn’t bad enough already). This was uncalled for, stupid, illogical, never asked for, we didn’t even get a warning ahead of time, and has now killed the personal story on alts for me.
Sorry for the wall of text and rant, but I’m very frustrated by this and just wanted to get it off my chest. I hope (but not holding my breathe) that Anet reverts this extremely stupid change.

Based on your detailed description of the way it works now DragonKnight, I have to agree. It sounds utterly backwards and broken the way its now set up. No logic to the sequence of events at all.
Ok… while I hated the Apatia story line (for varied reasons and partly the fault of some of my guildmates) it is terrible if these steps are gone… And what DragonKnight is reporting sounds horrible… so now we have just a jumble of story steps which are put together without making any sense… great… at least I have only one character which has not yet finished the personal story…
Now I’m kinda worried about something else. As I mentioned, I have one character who is already on the Apatia storyline. When I finish the first part and go to Battle of Fort Trinity, do I go to the cleansing Orr missions and skip the Liberating Apatia mission, or will I still get that one? and if so, do the Orr cleansing missions come after that one? or at the end of it all like it used to be, or do I miss out on the Source of Orr altogether? Which would absolutely suck if the character in question wasn’t made before the last feature pack (since Source of Orr is still a trait unlock).
I deliberately waited with my ranger’s personal story to experience the new rewards after the patch and I’ve never thought that not just the reward system of the story would change. I reached the Temple of the Forgotten God strory mission now but at this point I the story has lost all of its cohesion. Here are my observations:
1. In “Light in the Darkness” story step I choose Apatia’s story just to realize that the Apatia/Tonn/mesmer saboteur storylines are completely missing and at this point in the story I think they cut them out completely.
2. After Forging the Pact you have to defend Fort Trinity now. There is a slight change in the conversation with Trehearne, he doesn’t mention Apatia/Tonn/or the saboteur just talks about how we drew the dragon’s attention to us. Unfortunately the new dialogue part wasn’t dubbed ( I couldn’t hear neither my character nor Trehaerne speaking).
3. Right after this I was teleported to Cursed Shore to follow with the “Against the Corruption”, “Cathedral of Silence / Romke’s Final Voyage”, and “The Source of Orr” missions. After a mission you’re automatically teleported back to Fort Trinity and you can start the next mission from there (in the air ship, you don’t even have to move an inch)
4. In “The Source of Orr” story mission you see all the NPCs who were there in the pre-patch version. This doesn’t make any sense since you haven’t met many of them due to the new order of the storyline. For example, Sayeh is there and when I talked to her this is what my character said: “Twice you’ve given me aid. Once with Apatia, then at Abaddon’s Temple. I am in your debt.” Too bad that my ranger has never met with Apatia and never been to the temple of Abaddon at this point….. If you speak with Galina, you mention to her how crucial was her and Snarl’s presence in the fight against the Mouth of Zhaitan….
5. Now after the Source of Orr comes the “Temple of the Forgotten God” story step. After Trehaerne delivered his speech, he started to talk about Tonn’s death, his widow and that I shouldn’t feel burdened by his death… (it’s a good thing that I chose Apatia’s story that I couldn’t experience, not to mention that I talked about her with Sayeh in The Source of Orr story step; also with a new character you don’t even know who the hell is Tonn at this point) and he introduced me to Sayeh who doesn’t seem to know me.
I have to tell you that I really dislike the changes to the personal story so far. I can just imagine how confused will the new players be when they play through the story.

This is just plain sloppy. Not only were none of these story changes communicated at all ahead of time, but now the story just doesn’t make any sense. If they want to overhaul the Pact story arcs, that’s one thing, but you can’t just shuffle story chapters around and expect it to make sense.
People might have had their gripes here and there about the story and writing the way it was, but this is no improvement over its weaknesses, and it ruins much of what the story did well.
I was okay with a lack of development on the personal story after launch because resources were better spent developing new content, and this kind of clumsy reworking is far worse than neglect.

You summarize my problems with the new “improvements” perfectly.

I quit how I want
Guys, I don’t think new players could have coped with the complexity of the story and their brains may have exploded from over thinking!!
These changes are an utter disgrace. They need to be reverted ASAP. There is literally NO good reason for them to have been made. ArenaNet have taken a sledgehammer to something that wasn’t broken, and now the Orr storyline is a complete mess.
We need the Greatest Fear story arcs back, we need the story steps back in their original order, and we need it fast.

Heck, even if it’s not fast, I’d at least want some explanation as to why these changes were made, and what the developers think of the continuity errors.
I might disagree, but with changes like this, I’m interested into what kind of thought went into them, and seeing that someone did at least weigh the pros and cons.
I had a character most of the way through the Greatest Fear arc when the patch hit — now it’s locked away for another level.
Are you saying this arc is just gone and my progress is lost? I’m going to be in some other arc?
ANet seems very cavalier about making existing characters loose their traits/skills/efforts…
The only possible reason for this is moving the “Boss fight” vs the eye back to make it chapter 7’s “final boss” to go along the trend of having boss fights at the end of each chapter.
But they messed up the story and created countless inconsistencies in the process.
This is a godkitten outrage. There was literally nothing wrong with how the story of Orr worked, and now it it’s a sloppy mess that doesn’t make even a shred of sense.
Please fix this ArenaNet, and make personal stories replayable k thnx.
