In addition to continued access to Dry Top rewards like Ambrite and Zephyrite Lockpicks, this episode brings more brand-new rewards! Begin construction of a new back item which will grow and change as your adventures continue in Episodes 3 and 4, and search through Buried Locked Chests for a chance at one of three new Kites! The Ventari Follower, Prosperity Mine, and Crystal Shard Kite toys will grant you increased movement speed while carrying them.

Of course, we already had the broom that you could double-click and your character would appear to be sitting on it, flying around. It did not give any kind of speed boost though.

This, however, is a kite you can hold in your hand to increase your run speed while holding it.

Could this be the beginning of what ArenaNet tries to make into mounts? Double-click on an item to make your character appear sitting on, let’s say a horse, that increases the run speed while you’re on it? Weapon swap would take away the effect.

I’ve never really been a support for mounts in this game since it’s not needed.

I doubt it. It would probably be more like a bundle that grants a passive boost while you’re moving, much like an engineer bundle.

That’s exactly what a mount is essentially. It’s a thing you activate that gives you some sort of cosmetic change + a speed buff. Whats to stop Anet from going down this slippery slope? Here’s the progression:

1. kites
2. kites with speed buffs
3. replace kite with horse, keep speed buff
4. increase speed buff on horse
5. copy/paste horse with speed buff on to elephant/mammoth/etc
6. copy/paste previous onto charr steam engine tank
7. copy/paste ad nauseum to all kinds of ground creatures
8. increase speed buff even more
9. add tiers of “better” mounts with extra armor which require grind and crafting
10. add special abilities like merchants riding shotgun
11. add unique mounts that require absurd RNG to obtain (like time-lost proto from wow)
12. add flying mounts

I’m sure if we jumped straight to step 12, people would flip out and rage at Anet. However over the course of 5 years… People would be acclimated to each step gradually, and before you know it GW2 is a freaking circus of crap it never needed because it already works just fine without mounts in the first place.

That is the common conception, but mechanically these kites work just like a mount. They are an item you activate which gives a speed buff and cosmetically alters the state of your avatar.

Mechanically it is the same as a mount, except for the part where:

1. you have to go to that farm
2. pick it up off the ground
3. the speed buff comes from a skill and is temporary, cant be spammed for 100% uptime
4. the feed bag cant be taken to other maps
5. the feed bag can’t be held indefinitely, it gets dropped eventually.
6. you don’t need to grind or play RNG to get the feed bag
7. there’s no social pressure for you to obtain your own feed bag to “keep up with the crowd”

I have reached the point where I wouldn’t have an issue if they released mounts into the game, as long as it wasn’t some perpetually monetization scheme (mount only lasts so long OR you have to buy feed to enable it…etc.).

I simply do not think GW2 needs any sort of mount, GW1 was fine without them. But I am no longer a stalwart advocate against them.

And for the record, I won’t have any problem with kites, horses, globs of protoplasma, etc giving a speed buff of like 15-25%. Those speed buffs already exist in the game, and that’s fine. The problem comes when you start pushing 33% (swiftness speed). Not everyone has permaswiftness. People that don’t may feel pressured. And what about 3 or 4 years from now? Is it really that far of a stretch to imagine threads begging for 50% speed buff? Think about it. even a year or 2 from now, we could have just as many threads talking about “Whats the big deal? we already have mounts, why not just make them a little bit faster?”

25% is where I draw the line. But I have a feeling we will be crossing that line eventually.

You are awfully worked up about something we have not even seen yet. Now if the new kites lift the avatar a bit in the air while offering swiftness I’d be more convinced it was a mount. Otherwise it’s just a hand held item that offers swiftness.

Right whatever.

Does it matter if the speed buff is 20% or 33% with 100% up-time? No. Why? Waypoints. Unless they destroy half the waypoints. Then suddenly any form of speed buff / mount is actually useful. Speaking of swiftness: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Swiftness

Again, you guys can have your kites and stuff with >33% speed buffs with any uptime. I don’t care about those. In fact I’ll probably be right there next to you holding one.

I just don’t want to have to go through an ascended-esque grind because they introduce a mount that has 120% speed and 3 merchants riding shotgun. If you follow the flow of the whole mount argument, it always ends up there one way or another.

I also take issue with mounts like the mammoth in WoW which are absurdly big. You get 25 people around the bank riding those and it’s a clusterfrack of polygons. I think GW2 has enough of that going on as it is.

Am I really the only one who draws the line somewhere? Where’s the guy that always posts the horse beating gif? I know he will at least understand…

Kudos to Anet. They add a mount that isn’t a mount for the anti mount hysterics, and add a mount for the pro mount crowd.

If something provides the same function as a mount, odds are, it’s a mount.

The forum drama is hilarious.

PS. EQ2 has wing back items that add ground speed boosts. Appearance of them is not much different than a GW2 wing back piece. The game considers them as mounts. They are sold as mounts. They go in the mount slot and are subject to mount restrictions.

Regardless of what u want to call them I would say this is a win win. I do not use waypoints, they make the world far to easy to traverse but i do wish I could go about without blowing the few swiftness cds that I have.

It’s a faster way to travel that doesn’t ruin immersion however keeps others screens from being cluttered and will have a smaller fps drop than a big kitten war elephant.

Happy medium perhaps?

Yes we have 2 slow creature mounts now the witch boom and the drill thing they are just different animation but give no speed boots beyond the 33% cap. Mounts main use is to move faster then cap speed crating a haves and have-nots from getting places to places. If you want to get down to it all tonics are simply a changes in animation in movement but they do not go faster then the 33% cap if they did they too would be mounts.

If you view on mounts is nothing more then for looks GW2 has more mounts then most games that have “true” mounts (faster ms then cap).

I think the problem is that a perma-swiftness item pretty much makes a whole category of skills completely worthless. You typically have to spec towards increased movespeed (either by having specific weapons or by slotting specific skills). Not all classes can maintain 100% swiftness as well. This sort of thing can be important in WvW where traveling across the map is a huge factor.

With an out-of-combat movespeed buff, you can dump your movespeed signets and warhorns for arguably better stuff. Runes of the Traveler have a bit less value, as well. Swiftness as little value in-combat, so you’re trading off very little.

Wouldn’t hauling a kite behind you as you run actually cause you to move slower due to drag and resistance instead of causing you to move faster?

The only way I can see a kite as offering a speed boost is if it is in front of the player with a persistent wind blowing into it (ala ‘Wind Catcher’ back item wind gusts) and dragging the player along like a sail on a ship. Perhaps that is how it will be, but having an object in front of your player could be quite obstructive to one’s field of view while on the move.

When I heard about the kite speed boost deal I had a similar image of people being pulled along in game much like that. The above link takes it to a whole different and disturbing level.

Not sure my stand on it overall. If it’s a non-mount, object based, speed bonus then I don’t really see an issue. What worries me now is progressions like other posters have noted or taking in game things and “fixing” them to characters like kites (similar to the demoness in the vid) for more … ahem … interesting boosters. I don’t care if they add mounts.. no matter the implementation, so long as nothing “flies” (can trivialize jumping puzzles). I don’t think they’d ever do that so.. I don’t really care and look forward to collecting these “mounts”. I hope they get their own tab though… it’d be nice if in the hero panel you could select any toy or mini and pull it out (but yes.. I know.. this exists in a way via perma bank.. just wish it was a part of the hero panel even if it was a paid account upgrade).

I have no problem with mount additions, personally, speed boost-granting or not. I actually like the idea of (more) aesthetic mounts and I don’t really care about movement speed bonuses added to them as long as I can disable the movement speed bonus (I feel we move too quickly as it is on most classes).

If I want to use it I can, if I do not then I will not. No reason others should not have it available to them if they so desire. Other players using them doesn’t hurt me in any way.

Ha, I hope so. 1 dolyak for me please!

Playing a Charr warrior, movement can be annoying. Sometimes I just wanna yell at my character “GET A MOVE ON ALREADY” because he runs (if you can call it running) so slowly. I can trait for a speed buff when wielding a melee weapon, but that’s just a waste of a trait spot as I see it.

Oh, and also: kites as some form of flying (or gliding) mount could be nice :P
