The best class for survivability and damage?
Long ago I would have said warrior. But now, I think the meta choice is Revenant.

PVE and PVP
For PvE I would say minion master necro has the easiest survive-ability. Mesmers are not bad, nor eles for sure. I wouldn’t venture to guess PvP.
PvE I have found zurker ranger pew pew longbow made HoT so easy. My warrior and guard had a tougher time with it.
As for PvP, what ever you enjoy playing. Currently DH is my go to class. I’m really enjoying playing one. If you can play necro(reaper) ele(tempest) engi(scrapper) or Rev well. You’ll do fine in PvP.

In open world PVE the ranger is king. Get a tanky pet and you can solo just about anything, even champions, with very little effort.
