I just found his attempt humorous, because these guys are around all the time, people know about them and laugh at the attempt, so I posted my experience and have since then blacked out all the names I so ignorantly left unblackened previously. ||||| In all the hours I’ve spent playing Guild Wars 2 I’ve come across both clever and hilariously obvious attempts at scams, get rich quick schemes, and beggars alike. If there is a way to make gold people will find it, that’s a given, no matter how unorthodox and inefficient. One of those ways is people pretending to be new so players will send them money to help them out. Now, it’s very obvious to tell if someone’s new, just check their AP. The guy in the attached screens probably didn’t think that far into his begging for silver (of all things, what did he expect to get a 20s per hour from different toons?) but him being caught is funny nonetheless.

You should probably remove the screenshots to avoid any possible Forum Moderation action.

Yeah well it wasn’t edited and I realize the error i’ve made, i’ll black out the names, i just found it humorous that someone with 8k AP was begging for silver

I remember my server had a person who would stand in LA (before Megaservers) and beg endlessly for gold. He would deliberately misspell it as, ned ghold.

Everyone knew him and his begging would spark insults in map chat. His account was banned, I think. It never is played that I see it and he is now on another account (I have both of those accounts blocked).

Hahaha, yeah man these guys are everywhere. They’ve just been more frequent these past couple weeks and it’s so easy to find out they don’t need gold… one guy i read in map chat asking for gold, because he’s “new” (i remarked at his character name), i then run past him and see his two legendary weapons equipped. probably how he got them, haha

Oh yes. I know the stance on scammers. I just don’t believe beggars fall into that category. Regardless of their AP status or not, nobody that gives money to any of them is fooled in such a way that they believe they’re getting their money back in any way… right? If its a new player that is too lazy to play the game or if its a veteran that is just getting some giggles out of it, the giver will be down the same amount of money that they want to hand out.

Perhaps I’ll never understand why beggars should be banned in this game.

yeah. i don’t think they should be BANNED but it sure is funny when you find them out.

I’m ashamed but I admit, I remember doing the same thing when I was like 9/10 in EQ. I mean my brother started doing it, we made bank, I couldn’t help but try it, bringing in more money than I ever could just playing the game, how could I pass it up!

That said, god I felt awful, I stopped after about a month of doing it, got some starter stuff on a new server over there, it was nice, but again… ugh… I still feel bad even remembering myself doing that. Integrity is something I hold in high regard now, and I did back then too, though I threw it all away for some quick gains… god I was awful.

My admitting it here makes me feel better though, at least I admit at one time I was scum

Whenever I see beggars I either just ignore them, suggest they go earn their own stuff or humour them with saying “I need gold too”. With the last one others usually join in with me toos.
I don’t mind helping new players, killing somthing or with tips or advice. But I will not give them gold. I don’t have much gold myself anyway.

The home instance is a whole district in human case. Perhaps you have a better idea where your home is in that district? (Asurans apparently sleep in a lab, and Norns on the floors of a Great Lodge. No character has a place that they could honestly call their own).

There is also this person in divinity and lions arch that has been just a few T6 mats short almost every night for a month now. Yeah some people have no shame but others are gullible.

The safest thing in games and RL is to be cautious about giving to beggars. Do it, but wisely. I remember one homeless woman I passed near the National Archives on a regular basis, asking for money for food. There was a vendor cart nearby so I bought her food, easily chewable given her bad teeth, and she was so clearly grateful that I gave her cash every week after that. Most of the time you offer to buy food for someone and they get cranky — like the guy outside Chipotles that refused to come in with me so I could buy him a burrito. He claimed he was trying to go get some other type of food.

In game I’ve sent people items I saw them needing on the forums, I’ve helped run folks through LS, I’ve handed out bags to clearly new players. But I tune my skepticism high and I never give to someone who just flat out asks for handouts. I like to be generous, not a fool.

Yeah, we have a guildie who also does that. Just hangs out in HotM and asks for a gold. I don’t see it as any sort of violation, or “wrong” per say. But I have a lot of guild pride, and whens he’s repping us and doing that, it reflects on the guild IMO.

But I guess some people would rather do that then play the game, so whatever….

A few times I gotten PMs from people something to the effect of “is he really scamming? I was about to send ____ until you said something”

I prefer the good ol’ standbye routine:

when they send the money, reply with “copy and paste this in chat:

You also keep slandering accusations as if you have proof but you continue to fail to produce it, but hey. Jealous is jealous.

I’m waiting for you to post actual proof that i bought gold. Because other than 10g i got with the last 100 of 800 gems spent on the assassins outfit(which is 700), you have nothing, and even then i myself stated that but hey. Be jealous that i practically farmed that much gold while studying and not having to do much.

It’s good for a laugh. I’ll wait for you to post proof, but we both know it will never come, because it doesn’t exist.
