The flaw of Ascended Weapon Boxes
I realize ascended items aren’t tradeable, but are they not sell-able? Salvageable? I mean, could do either of those if you got the box and didn’t want those stats. I understand that you want a particular stat combo, but I think it was nice that they allow you to select a weapon type at all. Be happy its not a predetermined weapon type and stat combination like in other games.

Be happy it’s dumber but not the dumbest idea. Yay!
If they had made drops be random stats AND random weapon, the OP would not be complaining at all. That would have been exactly like he expected. But they make it more convenient and more likely that he will get the exact weapon he wants so he starts complaining because it isn’t easy enough.
It’s like when you buy a child an ice cream and they complain because you only bought them one scoop instead of 3.

It’s more like living in air-conditioned houses instead of normal houses and before that in caves. Do you know the difference between convenience (acquisition method) and giving something on a silver platter (no work)? I guess not.

Wait, are you trying to imply that loot drops out of dumb luck determines how easy or hard the game is?
There are plenty of players who have been requesting, for an entire year, for hard content that rewards top gear. Instead, to get the ascended weapons, we must farm for countless hours by spamming auto-attacks, or hope for RNG within RNG to not get useless ascended gear.
It would be a lesser problem if we could sell it. But alas, we can not.

No I’m pretty sure he’s saying that Anet tried giving the players a nice update to weapon acquisition (ie, getting a random stat, but being able to pick the weapon they got) and got slapped in the face for it. We could just as easily got back to the days were you didn’t get to pick at all what you got as the drop.

Anet in its infinite wisdom gave us autoattacks. You don’t have to spam it, just leave it turned on and go watch few minutes of some movie. Get back and tadam, high end content for BiS gear done. MMO innovations I say.

You know exactly why they don’t create “hard” content that rewards top gear. Because people would exploit the crap out of it just like they do with every challenge in this game. They’d find some way to stand on a ledge or bug the boss or portal past the tough mobs or whatever. So then the hardcore guys would get their “hard” earned uber-loots before the fix and then the rest of us would be screwed with nothing.
BTW while you may think each individual encounter is easy, the sum of them is not. Maybe you consider running a marathon easy? Swimming across the English Channel easy? Because no doubt you can run a mile or swim 100 yards right?
If you don’t like the RNG acquisition, there is a solution. Craft your own kitten weapon, with whatever stats you want.
TIL casuals are even bigger morons than I initially thought.
Agree with Bright. A much better design would be to make it a predefined weapon but you get to choose the stats. Or just allow the box to be tradable. Can they be salvaged? If they can then atleast getting a box isnt completely useless, if not then its an even more serious issue of stupid design.
For those saying I’m an ungrateful whiner that’s too entitled, let me make an analogy.
Let’s say a guy walks up to you on the streets and gives you a broken watch. You have to put it on, and can’t take it off unless you destroy it completely. You aren’t allowed to sell it for parts, you aren’t allowed to use the parts on it to make a good watch, and you aren’t allowed to sell it to people who collect broken watches.
Would you be grateful? No, of course not, because that would make you an idiot.
As for people suggesting I should try different builds, I’m not going to deflate the tires of my car, just to see if it drives better. I already know it drives worse, and there’s absolutely no point in doing so, and it would make me look like an idiot.
I’m not being ungrateful or being self-entitled. I’m just pointing out the glaring design flaw.
What they should have done is implement a box system in Fractals where you can pick your weapon and have the weapon drop where you can pick your stats with the Ascended weapons.
Right now they just implemented the worst system on both sides.

you are feeding them on purpose aren’t you?
What ANet should have done is not to :
- create a new “most rare and most powerful loot you’ll RNG your way to”
- add in a second RNG roll right after the game gives you that item with a high change of “ah ah, sucker! the item is useless for you after all”
Instead, they should have reduced the loot chance from the start and make sure it’s always an useful item.
Some might say the current system is more alt friendly. Sure, except that all my alts use Berserk gear or Rabid.

Thus why I asked if they (the weapon you select) were not merchable or salvageable. Aint got one, so I don’t know. If you cant merch it, or salvage it, yeah it’s rather… a space waster. I won’t argue that.

I’m trying to persuade them with logic. So far, most of my efforts have been in vain…

I don’t know, I haven’t had an ascended weapon yet, so can’t tell you. My guess is they aren’t salvageable and they sell for 4s16 to a merchant (where have we seen this lovely system before…).

Non-salvagable would be a brat. They could at least give me some ecto or dark matter for the things, but I guess I’m ok with merching the crap ones (at least I get something for them), but might be a tad light on the payout imo. I didn’t expect oodles of gold for them, but somewhere closer 1g, hell even 50s, would be nice. They are (after all) rare drops.
haviz:
“Crafting panel, an ultimate answer to gear acquisition. Why not tokens from dungeons or fractals? Crafting is much harder I guess.”
You are correct here haviz, this could be a possible answer as to another way to get Ascended weapons. But I wasn’t talking about possibilities, I was talking about the current reality we live in. You are making a suggestion and assuming I want crafting to be the only way. This is a false assumption on your part.
Bright: Currently there are 2 ways to get this items. 1: RNG instant gratification. You can randomly get a random item. I am surprised they even let you choose stats. It’s RNG and we all know what that entails.
2: Craft the item you want with the stats you want. It direct and it’s time gated so you can’t be BiS in 1 day. I have many guild members who can simply buy most of the materials as it is. Time gating is supposed to slow it down a little. Sorta of works, sort of doesn’t.
Does this mean there shouldn’t be other ways to obtain these weapons? No of course not. I am sure we would all love fractals, WVW, Dungeons, etc on ways to obtain these new weapons. And in time we might see them. I hope we see them. But your OP was about QQing because you didn’t get to choose the weapon you got from an RNG drop. Does that really make sense to you? That you would get to choose what drops from a random monster?
Because I am sorry, but that doesn’t make sense to me. Loot table with specific drops makes sense. But that isn’t currently in the game for Ascended weapons.

Are you capable of reading English? You can choose the weapon, you can’t choose the stats, which is the entire point. I’d love it to be random weapons with stats I can choose myself, because it’s a better system by a long shot.
And I wasn’t QQ’ing about a bad drop, I haven’t gotten an Ascended Box drop, I was pointing out the flaw in their design.

Aiming that statement at casuals is a bit rude. I for one am part of this casual crowd and am defending this topic. Im tired of people looking at things and instantly trying to pass anything and everything as casual/hardcore. This effects casual’s just as much if not more than hardcore players given we casual’s tend to have less time to play than hardcore. Thats honestly the only viable difference between hardcore and casual.
That being said as the boxes are now yes they should have been able to be sold on the tp. Frankly i wouldent use a magi on my gear but i know people out there do. If support is how they like to play I see no reason with it and would be more than happy to pass an useful item off to them instead of deleting it, or vender trakitten.
Getting the ‘zerk or go home’ vibe here. If the content you play only has room for one build, perhaps you’ll manage to scrape by against those oh-so-dangerous mobs you want the 5% gain to min-max against. (If this isn’t the case forgive the condescending tone.)
If you WvW and have enough classes at your disposal to put any weapon to good use, I can’t imagine you can’t cobble together something that fills a useful role outside of a crit build.
If you refuse to play anything other than direct damage dps, I suppose other stat combos really are useless to you, but that’s not a failing of game design.
Consider an ascended drop outside your normal playstyle as encouragement to branch out a bit.
Thing is there are stat combo’s that just dont work. Im not with the zerk or get out crowd. Personally i use a few different combo’s. But that being said i’ve spent close to 1100 hours of game play refining my play style. By this point i know what works with my build and what does not. As many have pointed out ill take an exotic with proper stats over an ascended that has useless stats any day. The exotic will out perform the ascended. Honestly a rare likely would.
Fair enough, ultimately it’s your copy of the game to play how you please. I suppose I just get irked at the endless tirade of complaints. An ascended weapon drop would be seen as a tremendous windfall by most players while OP found it a disappointment. He’s free to suggest other mechanics for weapon/stat selection but I feel that the option to select weapon type is already quite generous.
If you have zero interest in WvW than I guess berserker is the crowd favorite. A sad state of affairs but that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms. I’ll take my bias and go somewhere that it applies.

If you get a stat for a playstyle that you don’t already have complementary armor/trinkets for, then that drop is pretty much useless.
That’s why it’s better to get a choice of stats than a choice of weapons. Each profession uses several weapons. So there would be a much higher chance of getting a drop that you can use.
Of course that’s probably why Anet lets you choose the weapons — they know you’re likely to get something you don’t want. They want you to take as long as possible to get your Ascended weapon because in the meantime they don’t have to produce meaningful content for the game.

That’s definitely not true. Anet just wants you to feel the epicness you get while getting your new gear. /s

Also great for trasmutation. As much as I want the Zerk Ascended stats, I dont want the red color SO I will be making another ascended weapon type to transmute that color onto the zerk stats.

White with cleric’s stats I presume. Most epic gear ever.

If they were going to allow you to choose the weapon and the stats, then you should expect the odds of getting it to be reduced by at least a factor of 10.

Green berserker’s greatsword will exceed damage output of cleric’s ascended greatsword. Why would you want to get a useless piece of kitten that you can’t even salvage? I’d rather get a random rare.
1.) Pick Weapon. 2.) One-time only pick stats 3.) HYPE!
It’s either that or make a ton of other builds viable per class. Until then I am going back to pressing “1” in a zerg.

Most stats were made for pvp. They will never be viable.

There is no “epicness” in getting a drop you’re going to sell for 4s6c.
There is no “epicness” in getting a drop you’re going to sell for 4s6c.
There is no epicness in crafting a weapon that takes 3 days to make either.
In general ascended weapons are not epic but it would be nice that people who dont waste time and money on crafting can still get a chance at a weapon they like.
Too bad they wont fix this for a very long time.
(edited by champ.7021)
The main problem is most stat combos, are indeed, pretty useless. Useless not necessarily from an objective point of view, but naturally most stat combos are useless for your character in particular, and even if you have a few alts, it may still be true. The other problem is that they aren’t tradable, so more often than not, you’ll get something completely useless to what you need. Now, that’s not a big problem unless the drop rates are so poor that you might as well forget they exist. But that’s a good way to trick people into thinking they have options.
In any case, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal unless the drop rates are like precursor bad or something.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Only thing these boxes are good for is getting other colors to transmute onto your existing ascended weapons that have the stats you want.
Ugh they should just remove the zerker stats, and any stats with crit dam % on them. Or just remove stats from weapons all together. Honestly I can’t wait until they revamp the combat system so zerker stats are knocked from their pedestal (but with last month’s “go zerk or go home” farming I have a feeling that will take a while).
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want ascended gear in the game at all. But I’m happy I got a cleric box that let me choose my weapon. That is much more useful than a cleric’s trident or a cleric’s dagger dropping (or any weapon that I don’t use). While I don’t having ascended weapons, Anet still went a step in the right direction towards making these loot drops better than normal, and people are complaining that it’s worse now than when it was completely random.

Now that I think about it… isn’t this the exact same problem that fractal runners have had with ascended rings? In both cases, you get an item you can surely use, but for the stats. (Fractals: everyone uses rings. Ascended weapon: you choose the weapon.)
So Anet saw the huge number of complaints of fractal runners filling up their inventory with useless rings and then decided to put us in EXACTLY the same situation with Ascended weapons!
So just to throw some numbers out there for people to compare the two.

Full zerker armor with ruby orbs, full ascended zerker trinkets with +4 power infusions, with 30 points in +power trait line, 30 points in +crit dam % trait line, +10 points in precision trait line. No food buffs or major/minor traits to effect damage/crit %/crit damage.
from the wiki:
Damage done = (Weapon Strength) * Power * (skill-specific coefficient) / (target’s Armor)
Average damage = Base damage * ( 1 + Critical Chance * ( Critical Damage + 0.5) )
Assuming heavy armor target, with 1.0 skill coefficient, and using the max damage value from the weapon’s range. Also no furry or other boons present. (Please feel free to check/correct my math).
With no weapon
2245 power/attack
+102% crit damage
41% crit chance
With exotic zerker gs (no sigil)
2424 power, 3524 attack
+111% crit damage
47% crit chance
(Max) Damage done = (2424*1100*1.0)/2600 = 1025.54
Average (max) damage = base*(1+0.47*1.61) = 1801.56
75.67% more damage compared to no crits
With ascended zerker gs (no sigil but with a +4 power infusion)
2437 power, 3592 attack
+112% crit damage
48% crit chance
(Max) Damage done = ((2437*1155*1.0)/2600) = 1082.59
Average (max) damage = base*(1+0.48*1.62) = 1924.41
77.76% more damage compared to no crits
With ascended cleric gs (no sigil but with a +4 power infusion)
2383 power, 3538 attack
+102% crit damage
41% crit chance
(Max) Damage done = ((2383*1155*1.0)/2600) = 1058.60
Average (max) damage = base*(1+0.48*1.52) = 1718.32
62.32% more damage compared to no crits
Please tell me how
3524 attack, +111% crit damage, 47% crit chance (exotic zerker) w/ avg dam 1801.56
vs.
3538 attack, +102% crit damage, 41% crit chance (ascended clerics) w/ avg dam 1718.32
actually makes that big of a difference. Yes, the damage is smaller (in this case, the ascended cleric’s weapon does 95.34% of the damage of the exotic zerker). If you are min maxing that is a noticeable difference, but the way you guys are going off on this (you’d rather have a masterwork zerker instead of an ascended cleric’s) is a bit much. That 83.24 difference in damage will mean every ~20 hits or so for the exotic zerker, the clerics ascended will have to hit ~21 times to do the same amount of damage.
Is it really that big of a deal? Outside of final dungeon bosses or mid to high level fractals, this isn’t an issue at all. And even there, if you have to hit the boss 5 more times, is that enough to complain about it and call it completely worthless?
Anet is letting you craft the stats that you want. And you may get lucky and get a zerker box and then you’ll be happy. If I got stuck with a zerker box, I’d only use it until I could replace it.
(edited by Wallace MacBix.2089)
-snip-
Add buffs like fury and might stacks. Zerker’s exotic is better by about 4% than cleric’s ascended and that’s without food and perception stacks which only increase that difference. So why should anyone be grateful for getting useless gear. Just because it’s pink?
I dont even get his point he proved that zerker exotic is better than cleric’s ascended So why would you take cleric’s ascended over zerker lol
and imagine the difference with ascended zerker and full buffs
thanks for doing all that work to not prove your own point
Well, reskin your exotic zerker GS with the Ascended cleric one then :p

Thanks for doing the math here, but I feel I can’t really understand what you’re saying here. Because essentially, what you’re saying is, “the cleric ascended weapon is a straight downgrade to exotic zerker” (provided I happen to play a build that doesn’t make use of or doesn’t want any of the other stats), and therefore complete junk and a waste of space. And you don’t see why people are complaining?
Personally, I hold my judgment until we can discern the overall droprates for the boxes and their respective stat variant (I expect it to be laughably low, but that’s another matter). After all, what it comes down to, is the amount of boxes you want, drawn out of the pool of all possible drops. For that matter, I’d regard unwanted stat drops as just another vendor trash drop.
But I can see why people get kitten ed off by it. Unwanted stat drops are unneccessarily diluting an already thin loottable, and it creates that unnerving feeling of “Congratulations! You’ve won the lottery!!! … -NOT.”
Ugh they should just remove the zerker stats, and any stats with crit dam % on them. Or just remove stats from weapons all together. Rather not as my current gs skins are better than the ascended ones.
Lol, I have to disagree with you. Choosing the weapon is a good thing. A Assassin one may be useless for X class, but is useful for my Y class.
Now let’s face the other situation. You get a torch. Your main doesn’t use torch. Your second most played toon doesn’t use a torch. Maybe only your 4th toon, a level 20 guardian is able to use a torch. But you don’t think torches are good for what you are planning when he gets lvl 80.
Cleric stats is useless for your toons, but at least you won’t end up with a weapon that you won’t use at all if you could choose the stats.
Anyway, just throw it away. No stress, the system is working well. Imagine if you could not choose either the weapon or the stats

Honestly not being able to choose weapon or stat isent much different that how it currently is. End result will be the same. You throw it out. Unless you get a useful stat crafted exotics will outperform.

This has been the point I was trying to make.

And its a terrible point. You guys are so passive about this. Oh look they gave us SOME choice thats better than none. Thats not the point. Because these weapons are account bound theres no reason to not allow people to choose both weapons and stats. Personally i dont use weapons that have different stats than my build and the only people who i know who have gotten these boxes and are happy are either people who got zerk or people who dont understand stats. Its too bad people like you allow Anet to come out with stupid things like this.
I made the 100th post.

Add buffs like fury and might stacks. Zerker’s exotic is better by about 4% than cleric’s ascended and that’s without food and perception stacks which only increase that difference. So why should anyone be grateful for getting useless gear. Just because it’s pink?
Actually (again, if I’m doing the math right), the difference between them lessens.
Include perm fury, 25 stacks of might, 25 stacks from superior sigil of perception, superior sigil of force, bowl of sweet and spicy butternut squash soup (I figure +100 power, +10% crit dam is the best food for zerker), and potent masters maintenance oil, and average weapon damage (instead of just assuming max every hit).
Exotic, zerker:
Damage done = ((((3399*(1100+995)/2)1.0)/(2600))1.05) = 1437.86
Average damage = base*(1+.84*(1.21+0.5)) = 3503.24
Ascended, clerics:
Damage done = ((((3458*(1045+1155)/2)1.0)/(2600))1.05) = 1536.15
Average damage = base*(1+.73*(1.12+0.5)) = 3352.80
3352.80/3503.24*100 = 95.71% damage (that cleric does of zerker)
3352.80/(3503.24-3352.80) = 22.27
—> ~22 hits on zerker == ~23 hits on cleric
