The gem system for the online store
EVE online has a similar system in place and it’s worked great for almost a decade.

It’s a compromise that works for me, because you can earn gems in-game via gold, and in pvp. Gems is a proxy that lets you acquire those BL items from either direction.
You can buy exactly how many ever gems you want. You just have to keep adjusting the amount of gold until it rounds to the number you’re looking for.
I’m not sure why they don’t have smaller units than 800 gems (or is it 400?) for sale in the cash shop.
the reason for the gem system is to make it possible to get the same items with ingame gold. either you would need 2 independant delivery systems selling the same items, or one system using a common purchase mechanism.
it doesnt convolute the system as you imply…it in fact simplifies it.

They don’t have smaller units because logically they want you to buy more gems. That is why some of the items in the cash shop are priced in such a way that once you spend your gems in the cash shop, you pretty much have to buy another 800 games or use gold to get more.
Strategic pricing.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
Also if you wan to buy via gold the overpriced of the gems now is very insane now if like almost 1 gold for nothing.
You have 2 ways grind like a no lifer or buy some gems cards.
