Please make it so players that blocked you can’t spam you with messages. Thank you.

Block them back and problem solved.

While the “block them back” mentality will get the job done, blocking someone should remove the ability to communicate with them entirely instead of just halting their messages.

There is a feature already in game to accommodate this.

For anyone whom you do not wish to receive messages, block them.

You cannot message someone you have blocked. However, if you appear offline you can message said person, and they can’t reply. Unfortunately, this happens a lot.

If they block you they can’t PM you however they can unblock you, then PM you then block again.

Just block them if it’s annoying.

Its not really about the simple solution though it’s about the illogical mechanic that lets people still msg you after there’s supposed to be no contact.

Well for the normal persons who read this: It is a simple principal that works the same in every game. You block someone. Usually you do that cause for some reason you don’t want anything to do with that person, including spending time to PM/spam him or her… So normally in most games blocking means no contact in every possible way. It is very normal if it works like that and indead very strange and shamefull it didn’t work like that in the first place. But I can understand most kids like this childish feature as it is now.

I met a guy a couple of weeks ago who blocked me then continued to whisper because during the messages I tried to respond and it would tell me this user has blocked you and refuse to let me whisper or send mail whenever I tried despite multiple messages from him in succession.

If someone blocks you it never actually says that they have. You either get a connection error or “the user is offline” error. They would have been appearing offline, as that’s the only way you can make outgoing pms without having any incoming ones.

Sure, it should be reciprocal like that. However, since it’s a programming change, it means devoting dev time to it. How would you prioritize that over other changes to the UI? Is it more important than fixing bugs? Than introducing new content? Than delivering HoT on time? Than adding other features?

Blocking does prevent either person from sending messages. People have posted screenshots of the tests they’ve done here in this thread.

People who claim they’ve blocked you but are still sending messages are either unblocking and reblocking quickly or have just gone invisible and are pretending to have blocked you.

While the “block them back” mentality will get the job done, blocking someone should remove the ability to communicate with them entirely instead of just halting their messages.

Sure, it should be reciprocal like that. However, since it’s a programming change, it means devoting dev time to it. How would you prioritize that over other changes to the UI? Is it more important than fixing bugs? Than introducing new content? Than delivering HoT on time? Than adding other features?

For me, it seems low priority since there’s a perfectly simple way to deal with the issue already (manually /blocking them). Your mileage might vary.

Fair enough. In that case, the issue is identical to someone sending messages while invisible.

My point is that regardless of why the OP feels aggrieved, the game already provides a solution: /block and move on.

So, one time I was fighting a ranger and someone else together with a guard as a thief. The guard gave me Aegis which made me invulnerable – we beat those two guys. In wvw you can get the names of your enemies by blocking them – you can unblock them after getting their name, so you can talk to them. That can be fun actually. Just that this guy had me on his blocklist while whispering me tirades of how I am a cheater and that he reported me and so on. I had no chance to tell him that he should’ve paid attention to my boons. And that is annoying – he will go on and report people cause I can’t tell him that he should learn to play ;)
So, in the end the fair thing to do would be “If you block this person you can’t whisper them anymore since if you decided that he isn’t allowed to talk to you, you shouldn’t be allowed to talk to him either – so think twice before you block”.
Btw: If I am invisible and “accidently” whisper someone, they send me a mail to tell me that I’m invisible ;) So, it’s not really the same thing.

What you just described isn’t him whispering you while you’re blocked; it’s him either quickly blocking you after whispering you or being Invisible (which means you won’t be able to whisper him). Like a bunch of us already described above.

But as you pointed out, you could send him mail explaining your side (if you cared that much). Or just block him so he actually can’t contact you.

I think he just either forgot to get me off his block list, or blocked me on purpose.

It is exactly the same thing. They can’t whisper you back if you appear offline, the only difference between them and someone harassing someone else while appearing offline is that they may put them back on the block list to prevent them from also sending mail.

I will reiterate – the ONLY WAY to send outgoing pms and not get incoming is by appearing offline. You CANNOT send pms to someone you have blocked.

Ok, I get that you guys tried it recently, I didn’t – maybe anet changed it – I don’t know. Have to try it for myself – I just know that it has been like that in the past.

I think he just either forgot to get me off his block list, or blocked me on purpose.

I don’t doubt that he blocked you to begin with; that’s how he got your player/account name to whisper you in the first place. But he didn’t whisper you while you were blocked (it’s impossible to do so). He took you off block to whisper you and stayed in Invisible mode (or played the block/unblock game) to keep you from being able to reply.

Also, the block function hasn’t changed in a long time (if it ever was changed at all), as far as I know.

That has been a few months ago.
And a few months ago a friend asked me to whisper someone in wvw who whispered him nicely but forgot to remove him from ignore – so I whispered them and told them they had my friend on ignore, which they then noticed. So it has been like that- I have no idea if it’s still, I’ll have to test it.

ETA: And I finally blocked the ranger back and he was online. Same with a thief a year earlier who did the same kitten with me – blabbering nonstop while not giving me a chance to reply – he was online when I blocked him.

Solution is already in the game. If you don’t want to hear from some one, then block them. Problem solved.
