I didnt really know where to put this, move or merge it as you wish.

Yes, the kittens, and I did actually write kittens.
The censorship of words is already ridiculous but at least understandable.
-As if anyone would die from being called a name on the internet. The mods are already monitoring cyberbullying, and if you want to actually hurt someone, you will find a way.
-If I see the word ‘bullkitten’ I certainly dont know what its substituting for.
-Some word bans are simply not neccessary. Most can hardly be considered insults.

But all of this is not even the issue. Its their forum, they can ban whatever words they like. And if it actually prevents someone crying for hours for being called names by a stranger, alright. The positive effects will probably outweight the negative.

My problem is the stupid filter that actively tries to find masked insults and then kittens everyday sentences.
One of my favourites, taken from the thief forums:
30 sec(conds) untraited ->
30 sekittenraited
Or this one:
Who-—responded/resorted/retired/recalled/rewhatever ->
kittenponded
Or how about a cooldown of 55 seconds ->
kitten cd

Now this is what I’m having a problem with.
It stops us from having a dialogue, renders perfectly normal sentences unreadable and worst case can even make people think they have been verbally assaulted.
I dont ask you to remove the profanity filter or anything, but maybe you could just accept the fact that people will always find ways to insult each other and remove all the masks that stop us from talking.
And you might want to consider that a—-55 is already not as ‘powerful’ as the original word. Given the right context a kitten can probably be more insulting.

Finally: This is urgent. With all the time I lately spent on the forum im starting to replace cursewords with kittens while still thinking a sentence.

Censorship can do that.

The kittens were amusing at first but they’ve become tiresome. The fact that things that aren’t even related to curses are being censored is a bit of a problem and simply shows that the list of things to be censored is too unrefined.

What bugs me is we can’t have any hats. I mean, I can have a hat. But as soon as I give that hat to anyone, it doesn’t matter if it’s my Dad’kitten, Mother’kitten, sister’kitten, brother’kitten, friend’kitten, girlfriend’kitten. They all magically turn into kittens!

And now everyone I know has a kitten sitting on their head and they’re looking rather disapprovingly at me… Nobody mention my hat! :o

As a side note… I really want a kitten hat headpiece now plz…

It’s really a minor problem. They don’t show up that often and it takes very little to fix to remove the ones that do appear. On the other hand, replacing true curse words with kitten helps keep the forums civil.

True, but the moderator will do something about it, so there’s that.

What I was talking about more was the type of language such as, “kitten you.” It adds nothing to any conversation on the forum and many people find “kitten you” more offensive than “you’re an idiot.” Regardless of how many people want to say that ’it’s only words’, words are how we communicate and how we affect each other’s thoughts and emotions. For that reason words have a power beyond their simple meanings and some words have far more of a ‘punch’ than other words because of how they affect the emotions. The filter is there to decrease the power of the more powerfully negative words by converting them to the mental image of a kitten, and by decreasing their power it keeps the forum more civil and keeps conversations from heating up.

To be fair though that word is strong enough to be considered a swear. Still, it’s like the other guy’s example of a hat.

I don’t believe in censorship in general and think filters should be on the user’s end for people who care about that stuff while directly insulting someone should still be punished.

Therein lies the problem with the filter. If the poster didn’t want that level of punch he wouldn’t use that word in the first place. We mentally envision the word anyway so it still has the same effect. “Kitten” here has a meaning vastly different than it does in the real world or elsewhere on the internet.

That’s not the problem with the filter. That’s the purpose of the filter, to lessen the level of punch. Filtered “kitten you” doesn’t have the same punch as unfiltered “kitten you”.

The filter is not the issue.
Whatever you personally think about it, whether you find it necessary or stupid does not matter.
They think its neccessary and its their website.
The problem is the oversensibility. Simply allowing alternate forms of a ‘bad word’ if they are accompanied by other words would be sufficient.
As if anyone would use ‘randomwordAfiftyfive’ to circumvent the word filter.

Eh, I find the kitten filter amusing rather than troubling.

As to the issue of perceived over-sensitivity, people are — as noted — going to find ways to circumvent the forum owner’s intent. That’s why they add things to the filter (if in fact they do) and why the filter started with a lexicon that included alternative ways to express words that have a negative connotation which ANet doesn’t want expressed.

Well, frankly, I think there’s something wrong if you can’t express yourself without profanity in a legitimate discussion. It’s fine in casual conversation; I use it all the time, but when communicating with anonymous people I understand the need to play it a bit safe. Not that I don’t use it, but it’s a long time ago since I was 12 and thought saying certain words made one super edgy.

Feed the kittens if they’re being a problem! They need to be loved, just like everybody else does.

I like the kitten filter - yes, it’s sometimes annoying that ordinary non-abusive words get made into strange feline contractions, but then at least I don’t have to read someone’s inability to use bad language correctly. My sanity is thankful for the kittens. They’ve made it into my everyday vocab, and as small and insignificant as it may seem to those of too hard a heart, those kittens have enriched my life a little.

Over at the Sims forums, they have plums. I can assure you all, the kittens here are much better than plums everywhere.

You have to think bigger than it being a mere dialogue between two people. Anet wants it so that, when someone comes here, they are not greeted with free (and largely random) amounts of hate and needless rage (cue the chan imageboards…just go there if you want some censure-free online life), neither that they lurk around and conclude that we are all just raging at each other all day long and nothing on topic or civilized is going on.

If you have to put up artificial communication barriers in order for people to “properly” communicate, so be it. Having a whole set of words automatically turning into kitten causes the whole set to be less used (since it now has only one element anyway for all intents and purposes). Note how we still use kitten kitten kitten all the time here, but it’s certainly not the main focus of whatever we are trying to say. With no filter, I believe most people (myself included) would resort to cursing for the sake of cursing much more than actually argumenting anything, or trying to convey our disagreements in more elaborate ways.

All that said, I am all for freedom of speech. I’d rather have people calling me racist and xenophobe slurs all day long online than not being able to call anyone anything, or to come up with “dangerous” ideas. But since this is just a game I have no intention of holding up a dialogue which actually requires such freedom of speech anyways, so I just go with the flow. Besides, freedom of speech is arguably not even everyone’s preference, as they would be gravely offended by reading this and that about them, regardless of its truth value. So if you are a game company, and you want to reach out to all kinds of people, you definitely want to establish “rules of language” that are compatible with having just enough freedom to cause much more “friendly” rather than “agressive” disputes. As for every other case (like bugs in the filter), the preview option is there just for that.

I think the filter and the moderators in general have a weird schizophrenic attitude towards this matter. My post have been removed for containing “smart…bum”. You know. That was reportable. But when people have 5 kittens in a post, that appears to be fine.

I’ve emailed the support why a “kitten you”, “kittening horse kitten” and stuff like that is fine, but “smart bum” or actually ANY NON-FILTERED WORD is bad? No answer as of today. Normally they copy and paste the rule with support responses, but apparently they don’t know either.

Don’t they realize the poster had bad, even worse in mind when writing “kitten you and this kittening kitten game”. How can “you are a smart bum” be worse than this? Because auto-kitten anything is fine? Should I post every swear in kitten language before on purpose?

That baffled me. If you’re lucky, your stuff gets auto-kittened. Moderators do not mind. No matter what the intent of that poster was. If it’s NOT auto-kittened, hell breaks loose.. Some more objectivity please.
