The “people overhype stuff too much so we’re not saying a kitten thing” is the single most kittened policy ever. Do you know why the bits they threw out were hyped up so much in the past? Because there was barely any communication so when we got anything we assumed “oh, so that’s where all the effort went!”.

So now they “learned their lesson” and communicate even less? What kind of backwards false sense of logic is that?

With nothing to look forward for months then getting a patch that’s a hit or miss followed up by another 3-4 months of silence I almost completely lost interest in this game. I check the news, but don’t log in anymore and that’s sad.

Personally i think they should go for it and release some kind of video showcasing what they are aiming to release with a little caveat that they may not deliver everything. win win.

no kitten that gives dem old blogposts they used to do ;-;

Hype and Communication is OK..but content draws people the more great content you have..the more people will cover it.?..if it wasn’t for gws1 ..i would have never got gws2 it wasn’t the hype, bloggers, and youtubers, it was all gws 1 that made me pick gws 2. gws 1 never hyped, it was all about content and story.

Bingo. Word-of-mouth creates the biggest buzz. You can have fantastic trailers and hype, but if your product fails to deliver . . . well . . . people will let you know.

Looking at you, Suicide Squad.

What people, the movie going public, let the makers of Suicide Squad know was that it was worth a 750 million dollar box office.

It also told a lot of those people not to bother with Justice League and Wonder Woman. Especially given their experience with Dawn of Justice too. Heart of Thorns also sold a lot of units. But does anyone seriously believe ANet will sell as many with the next expansion given our past experience?

That’s kind of the point of the Suicide Squad reference.

It’s also the reason I cannot wait for Guardians of the Galaxy 2! A great product sells the follow-up product without much external hype needed.

I was under the impression that HoT did not sell well. Suicide Squad did. As to how many people have been convinced to not see future DC movies…we are all free to speculate.

People lime to mitch and boan. Its all talk. Smoke. But they have expressed in a truly concrete manner, with their wallets, how they feel about both HoT (poor sales) and SS (not poor sales).

Personally I think both should have been better, but we will see how the sequels go.

The lack of communication certainly doesn’t inspire anyone or generate buzz on mmo social media outlets. Look at massively op and see all the uninteresting fluff gw2 stuff they have…

As for communication here, well that’s tied into what’s being released, and that’s much of the same old out of touch profession patches, same old events, maybe an interesting gem store item here and there, and now a new zone once in a while with currency grind to keep it relevant… and a whole lot of silence in between… And when we do get something decent, like ranger sword not rooting and ghost thief cut after 4 years of begging, the players are so happy that it’s like the heavens and earth shook and a miracle occurred…

This is a great game, that I have poured a lot of cash into, but the devs miss the really important stuff a lot and are way too quiet… I could completely understand some “secrecy” around here if gw2 was a top grossing mmo game that really wants to keep hush hush from competitors, but they aren’t. The top grossing mmos all communicate way more, provide road maps to future content, tackle problematic issues more frequently and have open testing servers… Anet makes zero sense at times and seems out of touch in many areas, but oh well.

I see you want to quibble on the example and not the point. Regardless, a game doesn’t go free-to-play because it’s doing well. But, again, time will tell for Guild Wars 2. Whether those of us who remain will remain to see it is another topic.

While terrible games going F2P have garnered more attention in the headlines, I wouldn’t go as far as to assume that any game going F2P means that it’s not doing well.

I’ve always viewed FTP GW2 as a trial edition, what with all the limitations it comes with. Open up the game so it can be (mostly) experienced so a potential customer will buy it. Makes sense to me.

Are you seriously arguing that giving your game away as opposed to selling it doesn’t mean you’re losing business and revenue? Even in your example that’s the case.

But, again regardless, that’s another topic for another thread.

There comes a time when new subscriptions have slowed down where any loss is minimal. Restrictions are added to encourage players to upgrade to a full account. It’s a form of advertising similar to trial accounts only that they don’t have time restrictions.

Gaining new players into an aging game is never a bad thing and doesn’t necessarily mean that a game is performing poorly. It just means that the developers are trying to keep the population fresh. Especially for games which don’t have a subscription which opens up for veteran players to stop playing in between content releases.

Hype is a double edged sword… too much of it and you raise player expectations beyond what is humanly possible to satisfy. HoT hype was so huge people were expecting 25+ maps with 100+ hours of story content and dozens upon dozens of new armor skins to collect.

I can already see the same thing happening for Expac2… People look at the leak and automatically assume that because a single screenshot shows the name of one town in the desert that we will automatically get ALL OF ELONA. Those people are going to be very very salty when their expectations are not met.

That’s why they need to release update info on what they’re working on, what is completed, what is close to completion, what might be planned in the mid and long run.

If they don’t try to hide everything behind curtains they might generate enough buzz, but also not lying to the costumers is important. We have a LW episode soon, but we don’t know jack about it except that it’s on the making, there is nothing to speculate on, to talk about, or to even look forward to other than the vague “another map that we will leave as soon as we get the achieves and a bit of story.” Even if they don’t want to spoil the story they could be giving info about other stuff like skins, fractal changes, balance plans…

no one was expecting that. We were told that we will get 4 maps but they will have the bioms which were presented as miltylayed maps to balance the lack of many diff maps. And tbh we got a flax farming spot.

There is an old adage in marketing that no communication is, in itself, a form of communication.

Specifically one of two things happens. First, and most commonly, people will assume the company doesn’t care or has lost interest in the opinions of customers (to be clear, I do not believe this is the case with Anet). Second, people will being to fill the void with unfounded speculation (the nature abhors a vacuum concept).

In either case, whether there is any truth in the company losing interest or in any of the speculations, the result is rarely positive. It is almost always better to remain engaged with customers in proactive and interesting ways.

When GW2 went free to play it was at release of HoT, after which it had two of its most profitable quarters since launch, and right before it went F2P it was still making twice what it is currently making. It wasn’t a sign of it “not doing well” but rather an incentive for new players to buy the HoT package.

Its so easy to safely hype about things. Drop a partial image of a new pve or pvp map. Let people jump to their own conclusions and talk amongst themselves. It doesn’t need to be ground breaking trading post breaking info at all. People just want developers to act like they play the game and can relate to.

As for the lack of hype due to the fact that we do not have constant release of new stuff, I don’t really agree with this sort of feedback. I mean, we are just getting off a period of time of four consecutive festival updates. We all know that the team in charge of these current events are also in charge in reviving these festivals. Before there was no festivals, we did get a good chunck of regular updates in the world that worked off as premises for the next release of living story update or closure to said updates like the event chain that lead off to ember bay with the primordius weapon collection, the rifts in core tyria (that came after first episode if I recall correctly), the champion bandits before the reveal of episode (please correct me if I am wrong). And even with these festivals they did find a way to add the caladbolg quest after the dragons ball luck events and before lake Doric. Now that they are no upcoming festivals to look for in the near future I am pretty sure they will go back to releasing these events and if they don’t then I would agree that the game really lacks some hype.

The current events with the bandits were mostly added with the big pactches before the living world season started.

And about the festivals, aren’t those just recycled content? I mean, I see no reason at all for me to do SAB this year just for a recolor skin… Chinese New Year was mostly recycled, so was Wintersday and Shadow of the Mad King. Doing these at the moment shouldn’t be taking much effort from the company.

It is true festivals are recycled but the thing is we don’t know what is required for them to do in order to bring them back up. And the fact is, you can be dissastisfied about the festivals but I am pretty much a lot will be even more salty if they don’t bring these festivals back (e. g. the SAB). Festivals aren’t just a content that they switch on and off by implementing them back into the game without having to resolve many bugs due to previous patches.

Well about the festivals: I love SAB. Absolutely love it. Wish we’d get more worlds.

Only… when it was back now, I totally didn’t play it. Think I’ve spent all of 30 minutes in there. Why? Because I know the current worlds, and there’s nothing different than before. At the very least (no new worlds, alright, annoying as that is) I’d have expected a new set of achievements pertaining to the HoT and LS3 in some way, or combining some of it into SAB.

But there’s… nothing. Though to be fair that’s something I’m saying a lot about GW2 recently and I’m playing it very little as a result. The game is stale. Not on a content level even, I dislike the new maps because of how throwaway they feel (so rote they’re boring before you even entered a new one), but on a game level.

Ofc there’s little hype. What would be there to hype? A new gemstore outfit? There’s no massive class-reworks to bring old players back with, no underlying combat reworks, no base change to how WvW works including ripping out the entire game mode, nothing exciting.

I’m pretty sure that they have been milking GW2 for a while and have a large part of their team making assets for the next project. There is no way a team that large would come out with a small expansion pack like HoT.

content sells games, but the best content on its own makes very little money. “Hype” or releasing plans, giving people things to anticipate makes a big difference.
Guild Wars was actually hyped, they were basically the new kid on the block with a buy to play MORPG, many sites covered them far more than most new morpgs, they also said from day one they would continually release new campaigns with new stories/zones/charachters just as big as the first. So as soon as you finished prophecies you were hyped to see what they would come up with next expansion.

Devs are probably shifted to the next project gradually as they become needed, you always need people thinking way ahead in a company else you’re toasted by the competition. You need to prepare the lore, engine, the dev tools and assets early on so that when it’s time you can add artists to the production team.

not too likely, and hot wasnt that small, if you compare it to arenanets content they have released.

From all info leaks it appears arena net has been struggling with long hours and tight deadlines since guild wars 2 started, some top people left to work on new games with better work life balance. They had to pull people from LS to work on HoT release. Its unlikely they were working on gw3 when hot was released.

It’s more likely that they were strained because of what I said. Do you really think that a team their size working full time for years with an engine and dev tools already finished could only come out with HoT? It’s about 15% of the full original game and that’s being generous. They would never have been able to make GW2 at that pace.

guild wars 2 was in development for 5 years, maybe longer if you consider that many of the ideas and concepts for gw2 were the things that were too big for eye of the north to handle.

Anet isnt super fast at developing any more.

I honestly think anets team is not as effecient as you believe them to be. I could be wrong, Also MMO sequels arent really that great an idea, they dont always inherit the playerbase easily.
lineage ii, everquest2, final fantasy ffxiv’s first release, Im not even sure they are intending to make a guild wars 3.

Perhaps they are working on a totally different IP/Game, but if they are, then what does a guild wars player care? It could be something that they have no interest in, and they would probably be salty to find out guild wars was sucking for a few years while they developed some unrelated project.

People want full new games like Elona or Cantha, or even something new but NO NEW EXPANSIONS WITH FEW CONTENTS!

I can already see the same thing happening for Expac2… People look at the leak and automatically assume that because a single screenshot shows the name of one town in the desert that we will automatically get ALL OF ELONA. Those people are going to be very very salty when their expectations are not met.

That’s what I really don’t get, why GW1 had 2 more FULL games (Factions and Nightfall) with tons of new maps, contents, armors and weapons but GW2 only get little expansions with so few new stuff compared?!!! (For the same price moreover….)
People want full new games like Elona or Cantha, or even something new but NO NEW EXPANSIONS WITH FEW CONTENTS!

GW1 isn’t the same as GW2. GW1 maps are also smaller and much simpler.

I know how you feel, and GW1 was a great game, but please, consider this. Despite being very large, the maps of GW1 were actually very simple and empty. They could just render an entire plain, place a few enemies, and be done with it. Now we would burn those enemies down and be on the other side of the map, and then go to the forum to complain why there’s nothing to do on the map. Fighting was half the content of gw1 because every individual fight was a challenge where enemies could topple you if you’re paying attention. Nowadays we just grab a greatsword and mow the grass like a lawnmower.

These are all valids arguments, still i feel (and I felt with HoT) that contents of new exp are too few.
They can have tons of reasons (maps complexity and armors x 5) but if the new exp will be just like HoT I’ll feel unsatisfied again….(and not only me I suppose…), I prefer waiting a little more but paying the price of a full game for that little contents feels completely unfair to me.

All I can say is the Scrapper was beta-tested only 2 days, and only at the end, just before the release of the Expac, when any change to the elite spec was already impossible to do. The feedback about the new mechanics, the AI, pathing and trait synergy for the elite spec was overwhelming, very clear, smart and loving, but it was completely “scrapped” due to lack of time (or interest from Anet?).

I love HoT, but the way they treated Engie still hurts my feelings and my reason. It was wrong and insulting.

So Hype is not as relevant to me as timely comunication and proper participation of the community. Please don’t make hype without participation again.

At this point I don’t see why Anet would bother. People are clearly unhappy with whatever level of hype there is.

Regardless, people tend to buy expansions for the new content . . . not features. But, again regardless, that’s another topic.

The hype is lacking because ANet is holding the next expansion close to their vest. After all, they don’t want people quoting them again when something doesn’t deliver as promised.

Besides, we’re assuming the expansion is close to being done. The opposite might be true instead. That’s a sound reason not to hype anything at this point.

Its because these people don’t stop and think about features. These are the people who will race through the content as fast as they can to finish it first, then complain about having nothing to do. Well yea, if you no life grind and max your masteries within a week, of course it seems like a small expansion, because you skipped most of what came with it.

It also doesn’t help that both the PvP and WvW offerings of HoT were not well received. DBL represents a metric kittenton of content, yet because the initial release was not well received (which is kitten, since it was what people had been asking for. Then again, that’s the story of HoT. GW2 players ask for something and then complain when they get it), people just ignored it and refused to play on it.

Ehhh i cant say ppl skiped through most content. Systems are not content, hot was not content heavy, hot was System heavy. These are all truths but also Systems that have been added in the game can work as the basis for content and that was the purpose of hot, to be that basis (or at least i hope it was).

I hope expac 2 will expand from it content wise and only add on in these systems instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Also food for thought, its not the lack of release content that made hot look poor or what will make expac 2 look poor should i not have plenty of it, it was and it still will be the months ofter the launch that shape an expac.

I went in hot abit after release knowing what was the expac and i treated it as such therefor i enjoyed it for what it was and critisized it for what it lacked. Also, wtf is DBL?

gw2 is known for doing things in its own way why would that change for an expac? if they needed to put the groundwork for future expacs and have that as their first expansion then let them do it tbh

It isnt a better game. The game was literally build upon experience (travel, story) and fun, while being about skill, since you arent standing still and pressing 1-2-3, now its basically a grind in every aspect of the game, I mean…you are still standing still even in a game like this.

For me a game that is build upon a grind is a joke, it is basically working without working. You can work out in real life and actually gain more from it, without the side effect of improving your actual life…..I mean, literally, you can use a year to get a few legendaries, after a year you should be very ahead on real working out.
Only reason I am playing now is because they hooked me back then, and now goes to the same old MMORPG logic of grind=fun, which is literally so…..soo….yeah omfg, dont get why “players” enjoy that….

I get it tho, a lot likes this bs for some reason, they even join BDO and other games….So why not abuse it, even though the actual developers do not believe in it?

All MMOs have grind , and its essential to have it , simply because the time taken to create new content is many orders of magnitude greater than the time it takes for players to experiance the content, so repetition of the same content is essential.
Its a bit easier to do in a sub based game like WOW, where the level cap keeps getting increased, but a lot harder in a F2P fame with a fixed level cap.

They put in environmental Easter egg hunts and achievements that aren’t a grind with each new map.

I mean, if you want a game to be able to have enough content to continuously play day-in day-out; you are going to have to have some “grind” in there. You have to be really naive to expect anything else.

The biggest question is, if you don’t like grind, why are you insisting on so much content? Isn’t it better to just accept that general limitation and consume the content you like and let the game lay aside until more comes out(which it always does).

gw2 is known for doing things in its own way why would that change for an expac?

Perhaps because they sacrificed a huge amount of content before and after the expansion for the little amount of content given? The near year-long content drought didn’t exactly keep people around either.

If I recall correctly, the entire point of the expansion was because people weren’t satisfied with the amount of content given via Living Story or World. While I see people now grasping at Wooden Potatoes’s notion of features as opposed to content, features wasn’t the demanded item from the people. It was content. That’s what all the hype was about on the forums . . . content.

Rewriting history isn’t going to change that for the people who were there and remember otherwise.

I’m not saying I agree or disagree with their method of promotion, or lack thereof, but I am saying it may be logical to be more careful given how past promotion failed to deliver on expectation.

Anet was pretty transparent about the amount of content being 4 new PVE zones, 2 Guild Halls, and a WvW map. Raids were expected to ship with the expac but it took a little longer.

If people expected more than that, it was really their own expectations running wild based on speculation.
