The modern gamer and GW2
People play for different reasons.
Some won’t do anything that doesn’t increase their stats, others couldn’t care less about stats as long as they’re having fun.
There is nothing wrong with playing the game in a specific way as long as your way of playing the game doesn’t effect other people negatively.
And there will NEVER be enough content, in any game, to occupy everyone. People take in content at different rates.
Also, when people say that they have run out of content it doesn’t nessecarily mean they’ve done everything. Sometimes it simply means that they have run out of things they want to do, but still have a lot of things they haven’t done because that content doesn’t appeal to them.
Me for example, I have zero interest in crafting in GWII and I have only tryed World vs. World a few times since launch. Even though those are huge parts of this game it is not something that will keep me playing, because they don’t interest me.
And yes, ArenaNet has done something wonderful. I don’t feel obligated to play the game, in fact I could leave for a year and by the time I came back there would be even more content for me to experience. THAT’S how you make people want to play a game.

(edited by Naus the Gobbo.5172)
There are always those who want to rush to the end, eager to claim they are the best. See the first 48 hours after any WoW release.
Actually there’s a couple things wrong here. There is a requirement to grind, just not in the same way as other games. They changed their main focus to dungeons in november and when they added ascended gear they told us that it was necessary to see future content that would require a resistance to agony the new dungeon debuff in Fotm. That right there means there’s no more open world stuff of any real significance and if you want to see the real story, you’re going to have to get this gear. That’s a grind my friend, a gear treadmill. now granted it’s not here yet and they are experimenting with the living story but we have yet to hear them talk about this requirement for future content.
Second, the requirement to have currency for anything and everything is a grind, not to mention the enormous amounts of T6 materials that one needs (and can only find in three places WvW, FotM, RNG boxes) means not everyone is going to spend months getting these things together. We told them about the problems new players face in getting gear and what did we get? more RNG from bother laurels and Orr. It’s not a solution, like Dontain said in one of his most recent videos on youtube, we need less pakittena style gambling and a more direct approach.
Third, I’ve done everything I’ve wanted in a game that is not supposed to be what it’s been about now. This has been a terrible time for PVE engineers which is my main and always has been, so playing in PVE has been nothing but problematic.
I’m one of those PVE only open world only players who came to this game because of the promises of open world focused content/loot/improved crafting/minigames with pets and cosmetics as rewards. The first month I was here everything was fine and because they promised things like separating PVE PVP WVW skills to better balance them I never thought for the life of me that they would nerf my class. It’s been 8 months of nothing but, breaking every aspect of my class except PVP. Add to that the broken promises of content, and you can see why some of us complain, this was not what every prelaunch interview said it was going to be, and until they change it back or fix the things they’ve broken, yes you are going to have people like me complaining because I expect the producers of a product to make their product exactly like they’ve been telling me it’s going to be for 7 years prior to it going live. That hasn’t happened yet.
I was also one of those people who didn’t rush thru the game to reach max level, I call myself a gathcraftsplorer and chose the unofficial RP server because of the type of people I meet on RP servers. So you can see why we’re frustrated. It’s not one single thing, there’s a towering mound of stuff that’s just wrong here.
TL;DR I guess what I’m saying is not all complaints are illegitimate ones by people who have rushed to the end and realized it’s not the game for them. And there is a grind very much alive and well in this game, just because not all of the pieces are in there doesn’t mean that when they are finally loaded people aren’t going to be required to grind to get what they need on a much larger scale then what we’re seeing now.
I’m still waiting on the backpay in laurels. still hasn’t happened yet. See what I’m talking about?
Ok, so I spend quite a bit of time on these forums. Generally, I spend a lot of time on gaming forums for whichever game I happen to be playing at any given time.
Personally, I’ve played video games since the first Doom back in the 90s. I was about 7 at the time. I own a Playstation 2, a Playstation 3 and a Gameboy Advance SP. I also obviously play games on my PC.
On these forums, like every other forums, certain topics tend to repeat once a while. I don’t mind most of them, but the one thing that bugs me is people who seem to run out of things to do. These are the people I am talking about when I say “modern gamer”. People who play the game to get the top gear, to get the achievements of their choosing. These people did not exist some years ago, but now they’re all over the place, hence referring to them as “modern gamers”.
Those people seem to play the game for something else. It’s not the game that they’re playing. It seems to me that they’re more collectors of “prestige” than people trying to relax.
To me, ANet looks to have done something rather clever. Their model of no subscriptions and no real requirement for “grinding” makes the game very casual. It makes it a relaxing experience. Something you do because it’s fun, not because you’re still paying for the game for the next 12 months or because your friends are all playing and you’ll be left out if you don’t play with them. To me, it looks like ANet has tried and, to an extent, succeeded at bringing the game back to the roots. Back from the money-centric crap that we’ve seen with subscription fees and f2p games.

This game has no REQUIRED grind. I say this because I play the game and it doesn’t require me to grind.
Let’s take the Fractals, at this time the ONLY dungeon in the game that requires agony resistance.
I can play the fractals every single day, levels 1-10, without agony resistence and in fact you can even play higher levels if you’re any good without agony resistance, up to say 15. It gives you a chance to try/play all the content.
IF you want to go further with fractals, that is if you like them and want to continue doing them, by the time you get to level 10, you’ll start getting the drops you need to get the agony resistance you need to go further. To do that, means you’ll have to play fractals if you enjoy them.
You can get random rings from dailies through RNG, but if you do a tenth level fractal run every day for ten days, you’re guaranteed a ring of your choice. That ring, by itself, with the simple fractal infusion (which costs 75 fractal relics…you’lll have those easily by then) is absolutely enough to play up to Fractal level 20. During the time you can get other rings, not to mention a backpack if you want it.
But if you don’t want to do high level fractals and just want to see/experience the fractals, you can absolutely do that without grinding. I know, because I have.
The fractals were introduced for people who like to grind. That’s why they were made. They’re giving a percentage of the playerbase what they asked for and a lot of people really liked that. I’m still not at level 20 fractals. I got to level 19 and that’s it. I probably will be at level 20 at some point, but I really didn’t want to grind the fractals…so I didn’t.
You don’t need ascended gear to do any other dungeon in the game. What Anet does or doesn’t do in the future is completely irrelevant, since it has yet to happen. All we have is speculation.
Grinding is not required to play this game. Certain types of players FEEL it’s required, but I don’t see this as the game’s fault. It’s their own play style that makes them feel that they absolutely must have best in slot gear.
They don’t NEED it to play, they need it because they think they need it. The content isn’t gated behind it.
If your first computer gaming experience wasn’t the original Zork in the early 80’s you are a modern gamer too. :p
I’m old…
Content is always an issue for most MMO. Content variety is important for most games because developers cannot appease everyone
I kidda wish they brought back Toyacolpose. I love that temporary tower defense game
Zork ftw! Hey, Pong ftw! lol I am old, as well.
I don’t find any grind in this game. I don’t really care to do much in the fractal area, I have enough laurels to buy ascended gear, yet I don’t feel the need to do so. I enjoy crafting, gathering, exploring – I just enjoy playing the game. I truly don’t understand some people’s viewpoint on ‘the grind’, but each to their own. To me, it’s a game, so I should have fun playing it – which I do. =)
One big reason why there is an uptick in kitten and “modern gamers” is because of eSports and communities we have built ourselves. We allowed the games to become more about the end result than the journey.
The fact that people can get notoriety in real life from playing video games is what makes the kitten of human civilization come out and consume games like some sort of hyper advanced virus.
These people are also the reason you see so much RNG and required grinding in this game now. They will literally run up Mom’s/Dad’s/their own credit card to get that fused weapon ticket from RNG. Meanwhile, Anet makes bank and thinks it’s a resounding success, screwing everyone over eventually when those players go on to consume the next MMO.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
There are a couple things wrong here such that a modern gamer reading the OP recognizes, immediately, a glaring non sequiteur.
Almost anything of value in the game requires a good deal of grinding/farming. I’m not saying this is wrong in itself—simply present. I’m fine with optional grinds. From the standpoint of time to acquisition this requires more than ‘casual’ activity. Also, the addition of vertical progression means that you must ‘keep up’. If you walk away for an extended period of time, when you come back, you will be at a lower power level than other players. The incentive here is a strong, coercive (that’s the hook in VP), reason to not walk away. By definition, contrary to a comment above, it is a mandatory, required grind. It still mystifies me that there are gamers who don’t have a basic handle on this common gaming element.
GW2 is not unique at all among modern games in this regard, and it is most certainly not ‘casual’ in this regard.

Fair enough, but any gear past exotic isn’t needed to complete content except for agony resistance in Fractals. Even rares are good enough to do difficult dungeons if you’re good enough. What i’m saying is most “grinds” are optional. Every MMO will have a grind. In a theme park MMO, there will never be enough content for everyone. Some people will consume it all, and at rapid speeds.
GW2 provides the optional grind, and while many people say that ascended is better and therefore it is needed, 100% of the PvE in the game can be done easily without it, so it is not necessarily needed. This applies to legendaries as well. It is optional. I am a casual player, but have obtained some items that are hard to get, but at my own pace so i have not felt the grind. This is all my opinion of course.

You guys do know that it’s optional on every other game too?
playing for fun yes. play to relax? If I wanted to relax I go watch a tv show or drink some beer and shot the kitten with my friends. Very few games are designed for relax even golf. Most people I know are more kitten off on golf course than off. The problem with GW2 isn’t that you don’t need grind, the problem is that it isn’t fun. From Spvp to zerg ball WvW to Ftom. The game isn’t bad but it isn’t great fun either so it’s just a big ‘meh’.

Not really. For example, I need to be able to get t2/t3/t4 gear to know more about the story in DCUO. Here, I can figure out the whole story of gw2 with just rare lvl 80s.

Not really. See in other MMOs, much of the content is gated by your gear. This just hasn’t happened in Guild Wars 2. In Rift without certain stats on my items, I wasn’t allowed to queue for certain dungeons PERIOD. The LFG finder wouldn’t let me queue.
So if I left for 3 months, I couldn’t just jump into a dungeon with a friend or my guild. Because I’d be undergeared. I’d have to gear up first to play.
The only thing that MIGHT apply to here is fractals…except that if I was playing fractals in the first place, I’d get the gear in fractals I need to continue fractals and I can still do 10th level fractals with no agony resist at all, if I wanted to. I could still run with my guild.
Other games don’t work like that. Sure you don’t HAVE to get the gear. But if you don’t, you’re literally locked out of content. In most cases, you can’t even see the content at all.

The difference is with other games, if you choose not to grind, you are cut off from most of the content, places everyone goes to, and therefore you can’t play with others. In GW2, if you choose not to grind ascended, or not to grind cosmetic items (Legendaries, etc.), you can do all the content, save for lvl 15+ fractals (Which has the same content at lvl 10 and lower so you still pretty much have access to all the content without needing to gear grind).

No, because in many of those games you are gated from the content if you do not grind-nobody “needs” Ascended gear/Legendaries to “get to the next level” in here.

Start today and tell me how much time do you need to equip your character with ascended/exotic items.
Not to mention economy that is slowly but steadily collapsing.
This is nothing but the old lineage 2 formula…
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

Ok when you will be booted from fotm parties remember that ascended are useless.
Also when you will be booted by cof1 speedruns….the difference between exo and asc is about the same between rare and exo.

I don’t do Fotm. Also, never said was useless, said I have no use for it, Also, don’t do Cof p1 runs(or Cof), I make 5-8g /hr w.o dungeons. And never have to deal with “dungeon” type people. I just tossed 200g into my guild influence because I’ve found gold to be boring.. But game is still fun.

What percentage of the playerbase do you think pugs high level fractals. What percentage of the playerbase do you think does CoF speed runs. You may think this number if huge, but I’d wager it’s much much smaller than you think.
In the month it takes to get the exotics, if you’re also doing dailies (or dailies and a monthly) you’d have enough to get at least one piece of ascended gear with AR, so yeah it’s still a month. That one piece can take you all the way to level 20 in the fractals.
By the time you get to level 20 in the fractals, you’ll have at least one ring and probably two, which would give you enough to continue.
So the answer is…its’ the same month. Stop making problems where problems don’t exist.
Being kicked out of a CoF speed run? LMAO. Maybe I don’t know,. don’t play with elitist farmers and you won’t have a problem. I’ve never been kicked from any dungeon run in the game the times when I pug.
And yeah, I don’t have the “best” gear on every character, nor do the people I play with necessarily care.
This comes under choosing who you play with, instead of playing with elitists.

2 weeks for me. Got my first exo sword from the mystic toilet. I attribute it to divine mercy because I never got an exo from the kitten thing again.

I m not an elitist.
I just use the gw2 lfg tool that anet didn t implement…
And seems differently from what you think MOST players are elitists playing fotm, cof and stuff like that.

If people are kicking you because you don’t have the right gear…with the exception of the highest level fractals, I’d say they’re elitist. They’re at very least not interested in helping new people along. Either way, I don’t team with people that ask me to ping equipment.

But since you can’t put a number to the number of people who run this stuff in guilds and don’t pug, or the number of people who don’t use the site and just stand around in LA spamming, I’d say so what? So some people have requirements….just like in every MMO. Just like standing around in TOA in Guild Wars 1. Some people have requirements.
And some don’t.

If you are going to pug you are better off running with friends or your guild. I remember running a guild run in TA and we picked up our 5th a ranger who instead of helping kept making comments about low dps lol. I kicked him and we all laughed at him and made fun of him for months. We lovingly referred to him as a crit ranger.
Once we kicked him from the group it was smooth sailing and I always gave out any loot I got to the group by people picking numbers and our replacement 5th got an onyx loadstone.
actually in a mmorpg i expect to play with random players.
I could have a fotm Group but it would be the most boring thing in the world.
That defeat the purpose to even play a mmorpg….
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

If your guild is big enough, that happens anyway. We have almost 100 people in my guild. Id don’t play with the same four people every day or even most days.
But I do play with people who think like I do…more or less. lol
This comes under choosing who you play with, instead of playing with elitists.
I m not an elitist.
I just use the gw2 lfg tool that anet didn t implement…
And seems differently from what you think MOST players are elitists playing fotm, cof and stuff like that.
Never had anyone check my gear in fotm. Never had any problems with joining groups as engineer. I use the same lfg website that a.net doesn’t need to implement since it already exists.

They’re at very least not interested in helping new people along. Either way, I don’t team with people that ask me to ping equipment.
I see the “pinging” idea in game is often adopted by elitists. I would counter them by saying, “What if you did this type of test in real life?” And before they respond, answer with “What? You don’t think everyone should just be dropping their pants in the street to compare?” Yea, they feel dirty now, hope you learned your lesson. :P It is just as wrong in a game, it is just digitized ego instead.

And you have facts and numbers backing this up?

Also, ah, speed-farming CoF and doing FotM isn’t exactly what one would call ‘casual’ activity.

Anyone who doesn’t start his console history with a NES is young in my books.
Atari 2600. My first character was a square.
This and my first computer RP character played in text format. I used to play this little tank game on a Commodore Vic-20 that had a cassette tape drive. I would come home from school, put the cassette in, go watch TV for 45 minutes or so and then it would finally load, sometimes…
I agree with OP…it’s like someone is always ’’pushing’’ these players to ’’race’’ who’s going to get the best-looking gear and the impossible gear, whether it looks nice or not.
I like to play the game in a relaxed way…and I have noooo intentions to grind for gear.
I am very, very far from getting my legendary weapon and I do not mind it…I will get it when the time is right…it won’t run away from me…
Also in the beginning, when the game released…people raced to get to level 80…and then they found themselves bored… :S No wonder…
When I play the game, I like to stop and admire the work devs put into it…each area has some secrets, pieces of lore…hidden areas…
I’ve been playing since release…I have two level 80’s and I am still enjoying the game…
I too agree with this and with what Blur said. In like 2 days you could already see people at their level 80, speaking of headstart, so no wrong in what I said. By that time most of them certainly tried everything but in the wrong way, doing that as if their lives was going to finish within 7 days. People around already having 3-4 legendaries, already a couple of months ago as if they were totally normal exotics…
What I want to say is, in brief. If people rush end game contents like that, stays at the PC whole day and night in order to achieve things as soon as possible, it is no surprise that soon they get bored, since they couldn’t possibly enjoy that effort. Most of the people that acted this way left the game months ago.
Take it easy, enjoy the game in a healthy way and you will realize that you will not run out of things to do the very same day when these are released.

You guys do know that it’s optional on every other game too?
legendaries are optional, ascended is maybe, exotic is not
