What tittle says. Gw2 has the most kittened up targeting system I have ever seen in any mmo. How kitten up is that if you use single target meele attacks while hugging your enemy and end up hiting someone else or random mob or clone ? 90 % of time. Seriously, once i have even tried burning out heartseeker on target locked mesmer in close ranger and ended up killing all his clones, never touched mesmer.
Disable auto-targeting…
I share your sentiment.
Earlier I was doing a Fractals 28.
We were in the uncategorized fractal fighting the harpies, and one of the harpies went invulnerable on me for no reason whatsoever like mobs sometimes do.
Logically, I swapped to the next available harpy (who was not invulnerable), and began attacking.
The harpy I was attacking was well-within my range for auto attacking, but he was above me, and with the wall at my back it made the camera start to spaz out.
It was my immediate reaction to rotate the camera back downward to prevent it from tarding out… and I started attacking the other invulnerable harpy for no reason.
Ok…. thats wrong…. let me attack the other one again…
So I rotated my camera upward once more, started attacking the harpy that was not invulnerable, rotated the camera back down and then automatically swapped targets back to the invulnerable harpy again.
Why on earth is our targeting system based on our field of view?
In PvP this is especially annoying because you target things you have no intention of attacking and would prefer to go on ignoring (ie: ranger pets or mesmer clones)
I had a similar experience in downed state in a huge brawl in spvp where I was fighting a ranger who had downed me, but had moved off to fight another member of my team while his pet was still attacking me.
I rotated my camera, selected the ranger, started using my downed skill 1 to damage him, and bam…. target swapped to the ranger’s pet and i started attacking it instead. This happened 3 more times before I eventually rallied… all FOR NO REASON.
Fix this horrible problem ASAP
I once had Corrupted Oakheart targeted, was facing him and clicked my auto-shot button. My character then spun completely around and started shooting at a Veteran Oakheart that was behind me and far out of my weapon range.
Targeting, in this game, needs a lot of work.

The targeting system does have some serious deficiencies. It’s a shame, too, since so much of the game relies on it.
Not sure where the ball got dropped on this one.
>_>
I must be doing something wrong, but I don’t think I’ve ever accidentally hit the wrong target. I mean, I’m really trying to remember a time when I have cause I really enjoy kittening about broken stuff, but I just can’t seem to think of one.
Huh… well, if I ever figure out what it is I’m doing, I’ll share. lol
EDIT: For additional info sake- While I have played every class to at least 30, my 80 main that I started at headstart is an Engineer. And when I play, I never let up on the right mouse button. Ever. It is pressed down every second I am playing.

Similar Experience with picture:
The targeting system seems to think I want to select the ettin that is out of range rather than the one who is in range “hiding” like something out of a warner brothers cartoon.
I’m with Tolmos 100%. I’ve been playing thief since release and I’ve never had the problems you’re talking about but still, this is something I’m sure all physical projectile users are used too. It’s part of the game’s realistic approach imo. You really have to use skill to line up your shots. Sometimes you can’t just target and spam unload to victory. You need at least some level of positioning and skill. Outside of bows/guns though I’ve never had any problems hitting my target.
I’m ok with the basic targeting but I so miss target of target. Why is this not a basic feature of current MMOs?

This isn’t so much about missing your desired target as much as it is about the targeting system doing whatever it wants, regardless of the player’s intentions.
Target nearest enemy should do exactly that.
If there is an enemy 2 feet away from you but your camera is rotated away from it, chances are you will target the enemy 50 feet away in the direction the camera is facing when you push the target button….
(Imagine a strategic retreat in spvp where you need 5 more seconds till your heal recharges and you can turn around and blast that ranger who has been sending a volley of arrows into your back… you know he is right behind you…. yet you can’t target him if your camera isn’t facing him)
and if you have a target and rotate the camera, you should not lose the target simply because you are not always looking at it.
There is also the issue with the camera rotation and target selection being the same button. I want to rotate my camera in spvp to maintain field awareness, not target something else mid-battle.
I as well have some of the same issues with targets getting routed somwhere else and I can live with that, my biggest gripe with targeting is the total dropping/losing your target lock requiring you to re-target said target.
I’ve tried all targeting modes and they all suck tbh…
Auto target
Random, but pretty much the most reliable for me…
Target next
Will just cycle through anything that is even remotely targetable…including objects and yellow mobs.
Target closest
Yet again will target yellow over red if it is closer, also targets behind you…eh really?
Mouse targeting
In a larger group pretty much impossible to pick a target, also includes allies which would be super useful if you could actually “attack” allies.
Take target
Pretty much the only really reliable one…provided there is a good target.
I do away with Take target on tab and then Auto target plus Mouse target.
Guys, take a look at the thread in Suggestions on “An Option to Disable Right Click Targeting.” It will explain one prime source of targeting woes. Note that the one person in -this- thread without issues keeps the right button permanently down …
I dunno… I’ve always managed to get it to target who I want to. Tab target, for me, the first time around always targets whatever NPC is close to me and in the center of my screen >_> After reading this I ran out and made sure I wasn’t imagining things, and it still targets exactly who I expect it to. :-\
Occasionally when I quickly switch targets and cast something, the last target will still be the focus target for that one attack. To be clear, I’m talking about auto attacking a mob (A), then pressing tab (or click) followed by something like pressing 2 (which interrupts auto attack), then 3 (which is queued after 2), where 2 will hit mob A and 3 will hit mob B, even though mob B was the selected target when originally pressing 2. Could be a bug, maybe a feature (ie, to catch accidental miss-targets) or perhaps there’s a small lag behind the interface when switching targets.
The only time I have a problem is during huge lag. The target could be anywhere. Since huge lag happens rarely for me I can’t say it is a serious problem The only time that a target will need to be retargeted is if it has stealth abilities, and it is working as intended.

I am not 100% certain, but try disabling the check box in the image below and see if that alleviates the problem at all.
About that options screen cap, “promote skill target” is a odd bird.
If it is unchecked and your use a skill activation to select a target (say hitting #1 on a bow or rifle to target a mob in front of you), it will at first glance look like the same as any other time you targeted something. But if you then turn the camera enough that your target goes out of view, the auto-attack will stop.
So far i have not found any way to tell such a weak target from a clicked or tabbed target while that option is unchecked. This to the point that for a short while i thought i had nailed a targeting bug.
Honestly, ANet’s problem is that they have attempted to bold a TERA style combat system onto a WOW style user interface. Notice that in TERA there is no target lock, instead all attacks have a fixed range if they are not melee or direct projectiles. Meaning that the controls are more like a first person shooter than a traditional MMORPG.
Neverwinter may have a even better blend. There you have soft targeting, but can hold down a key (or via custom bind make it toggled) to lock your target for a while. Also, the ground targeting initially snaps to your soft target, but can be moved by moving the crosshair around.
People that has tested the combat mod script claim to find GW2 much more playable. I have yet to test it myself because i want to see ANet implement such a option right into the game.

Disabling that check box doesn’t help, just been trying it. For those of us who use the mouse for movement, we really need to be able to disable rmb for targeting.

I really really wish we had some kind of target lock feature in GW2.
You guys realize this is not a target based game like WoW but a collision one like TERA, right? If you fire a projectile at target A, and secondary target B is in the path of the projectile, you will hit B, not A. Similarly, if you swing your single target melee skill at target A and target B is between you and them (keep in mind most melee skills really have a range of 120 or 150 which is roughly two character models away) you will hit B, not A. It’s not a deficiency of targeting, it’s one of positioning.

You’ve actually hit at the very root of the problem here Tolmos. For someone like you who never lets up on the right button, you won’t have this issue. I have no idea how many people do that, but for those of us that don’t keep it pressed, it opens up a whole world of possibilities lol.
Both left and right mouse buttons can currently acquire a target, problem is tons of peeps use the right one to pan the camera around. And when you press it(or sometimes even depress it) it likes to target whatever the cursor is hovering over.

Yes, but people here are complaining about the target actually changing.
If there’s one thing that I miss about GW1, it is that targets nearest meant targets nearest-on GW2, it’s more like "target nearest that “insert targeting condition in here”." It has led to many problems, though I have been able to sidestep by manually targeting when the game program is hellbent on deeming a far away target as my “nearest” one.
I honestly believe that making targeting closest work 100% of the time on your closest target will make the game a better experience for all. Even if it’s out of sight due to camera issues-another thing I do not love too much-it’s still the closest, and should be targeted as such.

lol that makes sense. It’s just how I learned how to play oh so many years ago. But I can see it being an issue that other players have to play the same way as I do in order to achieve the same results. While I do like how the system is now, I also hope they add options in the settings menu for targeting algorithms for others who want to play in different ways.
And no, my finger doesn’t get tired. After 15 years of MMOing, it’s just become second nature. The middle finger on my right hand is the strongest finger of the lot! haha

Dunno, can heartseeker be body blocked? Can’t say i have bothered much with theif, nor pvp.
I do agree that targeting in this game is really silly. So many times I would target a mob, press “ride the lightning” on my ele and be taken backwards towards a completely different mob than the mob that I targeted…

The leap itself will send you through intervening targets, but the range on the actual strike itself after the leap is 120 just like any other melee attack, and if once you land there is still an intervening enemy or otherwise hittable object you will strike that and not your more distant target you originally lept at.

And so i think we are reading the same post in different ways.
I read it like he hits heartseeker, is very sure he targeted the real mesmer beforehand, and still found himself leaping towards a clone that is in a very different direction from the mesmer.

This is wrong for the simple reason that I have on many occasions targeted A while B is between me and A and killed both A and B with the one shot.

That’s because tab target is target next, not target nearest.
In options you can set which setup you want when pressing TAB.

The targeting system seems to think I want to select the ettin that is out of range rather than the one who is in range “hiding” like something out of a warner brothers cartoon.
Could it have something to do with line of sight, if you dont have los on that ettins hit-box you cant target him, perhaps?
If that is case, then targeting system promotes further tactical movement imo.

No, it’s not wrong. Most melee attacks cleave other targets nearby. Taking Guardian sword as an example, hits 1 and 2 of the autoattack chain cleave up to three targets at a roughly 90 degree angle. The third hit doesn’t cleave, but instead launches piercing projectiles which can pierce up to 3 targets in a cone. That said, if target A is at range 100 and targets B, C, and D are at range 80 and you attack with number 1 of the aforementioned autoattack chain, you will hit everything but A.

Sometimes I feel pets and minions and clones should stop attacking if the player loses their target lol
OK Anet, you fixed the sickle in no time. You fixed one necromancer trait just as fast and another is supposedly ready to go in the next patch.
Now, that’s fine, speaks well of you but please, can you fix the targeting? I’m sick of targeting inanimate objects and harmless yellow critters in Caledon Forest when I’m fighting the kittening champions in Queensdale.
I know there is a lot of problems (bugged events, ridiculously respawn rates, unbalanced champions, unbalanced professions, bugged skills/traits, etc) but IMO, targeting is one of the most frustrating (well, the others are equally frustrating but this one is the worst).
You could just cut it off and play with out targeting at all making it feel like a more action mmorpg. It may not work for all ability but most class can play with out it just takes a bit more skill or to just simply be faster at targeting by hand. GW2 is not a “sit back and let the game do all your work for you” type of game so with an auto target system in it should not be the best way to play it.
I have to agree – lack of “target next nearest” is frustrating. Target next relies on spawn or draw order… something other than distance and direction facing. Is it the end of the world, no; but it gets frustrating in massive groups of mobs.
The right-click all the time is how I play; but there’s a catch-22: a portion of the player population has right-click glitch out pretty frequently (there are several posts about it in tech support and general). Thus, the workaround adds to the frustration.
people still play with auto target on? learning to play without it will make you better (especially so in pvp/wvw)… much like fast cast targetting does
- i dont have an issue with using target next (bound to mouse wheel click); but i suppose a target next nearest would be nice
Did a bit of testing, and LOS do indeed apply.
Went to the forest in Queensdale with the boars, and even when the boar was right in front of me, and the name and health bar would show hovering, as long as there was a tree in the LOS between me and it, tab refused to select it.
Also, center of screen overrules proximity. I would be standing next to a boar, but if i rotated the camera so that i got a hovering health bar over one in the distance, the distant one would get the tab priority every time. But rotate the camera a bit so that the bar vanishes and suddenly the closest boar got priority.
All in all the behavior seemed to have quite a number of conditions, making it feel inconsistent and unreliable.
maybe this is the problem.
please note the time of 1st post and number of posts since… disgrace.

Well it took you 5 months to find out if it was bad or not i find that a bit hard to believe why are you posting now is there some other reason?
Occasionally when I quickly switch targets and cast something, the last target will still be the focus target for that one attack. To be clear, I’m talking about auto attacking a mob (A), then pressing tab (or click) followed by something like pressing 2 (which interrupts auto attack), then 3 (which is queued after 2), where 2 will hit mob A and 3 will hit mob B, even though mob B was the selected target when originally pressing 2. Could be a bug, maybe a feature (ie, to catch accidental miss-targets) or perhaps there’s a small lag behind the interface when switching targets.
This happens to me all the time, and drives me crazy. You switch targets, you know you switched targets because the nifty little picture changed targets, press your next attack and goodie! It went to last target! It makes it fun when trying to quickly change targets for a gap closer or opener.
