I see worlds fighting each other, but not the guilds.

It’s called guild wars because of the story of the game and not because it has actual guilds waging war. though I didn’t pick up the game before because I thought it was a pvp only game

That being said, the name “Guild Wars” is more to attract players of the previous game then anything else as it has very little in connection with GW.

Guild Wars is indeed a bit misleading, as it is a reference to oooooooold lore. In context of the current game, it means absolutely nothing, unless you like to read the ancient lore (which is actually really good imo)

Guild Wars franchise started as a pvp-focused title and there is no evidence either way whether the game was created based on an existing lore, or if the lore was created to support pvp features they envisioned. It’s much more likely the lore was created to fill in the gaps after the game already had a gvg concept. Very strange to name a game with something that seems to scream pvp, and then indeed have a strong focus on pvp, but then we should believe the game name is from an obscure lore event? Not likely.
