The price of rares on TP
Rares are worth next to nothing because players set the prices of these items.
There is an enormous influx of rares into the game every single day, but only a few different reasons why players would want to purchase additional rares from other players via the trading post.
First off, players are showered in guaranteed rare items, from several areas of the game. This sets the supply of this item very high.
Since players almost always strive to equip their characters with exotic or better gear, the gear is rarely purchased for the purpose of equipping characters. (lack of demand for gearing purposes)
Rares (lvl 70+) will always be linked to the price of ectoplasm. This means that when ectos are low, rares will be low also.
This is due to the fact that ectoplasm can be salvaged from rares.
Ectos spiked up around june/july due to a patch, and now ecto prices are slowly returning to normal…. so if you see the prices going down recently in rares, the price of ectoplasm had skyrocketed and is stabilizing, so rares will drop in price also.
Next, players who want to use the mystic forge to gamble for precursors often times throw in many rares at a time. Arenanet has announced that new legendaries are to be released with the expansion, and therefore many players are simply waiting to see what the new legendaries are going to be before crafting a legendary themselves. Less legendary crafting = Less precursor gambling, and a lower demand for rares, so a lower price.

….. even so, now rares price is supported by demand for ecto due to the gambling NPC….
Archeage = Farmville with PK
Dunno if this has anything to do with it but the magic find system that was added may have some part of it.
Think about it, as more and more people hit their max natural 300% MF there is a good chance they would finally stop salvaging their items (including rares) and just straight sell them instead. Also as their MF rises the odds are slightly better at getting those rares and exotics. Now take into account it’s not just 1 person this is happening to but EVERYONE who raises their natural MF in time.
I could see the prices actually getting lower and lower as time goes by.
Salvaging rares doesn’t give luck so the action of salvaging those for players shouldn’t be linked to them reaching MF cap.
Rare prices are related, those above level 68, to ectos. If the ecto supply goes up, prices drop and the salvage value of these rares drop. It’s one of the factors that influences the price of rares.

Do you even know how salvaging works? You often get essences whenever you salvage equipment, period.

Not rares. Only fine or masterwork gear.

Acquisition
The salvage rate is not affected by the quality of the salvage kit
Salvaging fine or masterwork quality gear.
Salvaging Globs of Ectoplasm.
Completing daily achievements rewards 1 Masterwork essence.
ANet may give it to you.

You only get essences of luck from salvaging fine/masterwork gear (blues & greens only)…you never get luck from rares (unless they’re the weird leveling weapons that don’t give you any mats at all, just luck). Do you even know how salvaging works?

Sorry, this isn’t a nice way to say something that is totally wrong.
As others have pointed out, you don’t get any Essences of Luck from rares.
If you are fortunate, you get Ectos.
Those Ectos can be salvaged for luck.
I’ve been around long enough to know the price fluctuates. Its been relatively high for awhile, but now the price seems to be dropping.
I curious as to why its dropping. Any thoughts on this?
Supply and Demand.
The Silverwastes rewards tons of rares. A lot of players are doing the Silverwastes right now.
A few months ago, people slowly stopped doing the Silverwastes as much. Rares weren’t worth much, which lowered a big % of your Silverwastes income. Also, it got boring. I think some of those players went to WvW (judging by prices of WvW food).
But then, the LA update introduced the ectoplasm gambler who rewards a mystic forge & an an achievement. A lot of super rich bid up the price of ectoplasms up to 30+ silver and rares (the source of ectoplasms) rose too.
Ths caused the Silverwastes to again be super rewarding and the players went back there.

Since the vendor got introduced, the price of ectos has risen about 10% at its peak and is already declining. I wouldnt call this small price increase super rewarding.
