Remember… there is no monthly fee. You do not have to buy expansions. You don’t have to buy Gems. Gemstore is how the employees get paid…you get updates and so forth BUT you don’t really have to pay a dime if you don’t want to.

Plus, haven’t people been moaning about weapon and other skins gated behind either tickets or chests? Isn’t Anet putting the skins directly in the gem store just what people have been asking for? So pony up some cash and quit complaining!

Pretty much what others above have said. Purchases are optional, but I’m waiting for discount promotions.

I think 500 gems is acceptable when some of the outfits are 800 which seems high imo.

I think it’s the same as usual.
The 500gem one are usually special skins, if we exclude the masks of the silent and wanderer.

“It’s okay to fleece us because we don’t have to buy it.” Nearly everything is incredibly overpriced if you look past the gem number and see how much actual money those gems would cost you.

Yeah… I’m not “angry” or “feeling entitled” about the prices. ANet can charge what they want for gem store stuff.

I just think it’s a shame that this is the approach they went with. Obviously I don’t have the statistical information ANet have, but I’d have spent way more money in the gem store if the prices had been cheaper. Selling a lot for a little gets you the same as selling a little for a lot. But the former has the advantage of having customers feel like they’re getting value for money.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Gem shop prices (current/historical):

  • Armor sets (e.g. Trickster’s): 800 gems
  • Outfits: commonly 700gems, a few at ~500, one at 1000
  • Back skins: 300-500 gems
  • Gliders: 400-500 gems
  • Armor pieces:
    • Spectacles & other historicals: 150 gems
    • Fuzzy hats & other sillinesses: 200 gems
    • Various with few/no particle effects: 300 gems
    • Various fancy (especially festival masks): 300-400 gems
    • Various shiny (Foefire, Chaos Gloves, Glowing Eyes, Mask of the Wanderer|Silent): 500 gems

tl;dr plenty of precedent for 500 gem skins

You cant be fleeced. You cant be overcharged. By definition items cant be overpriced if people are willing to buy at that price.

The amount of actual money I would need to spend on gems to get the items is zero. Its pretty hard to believe an argument that zero dollars is overpriced.

Well….. I’ve just returned after a 2 year break. God I’ve missed this game. I feel that the prices of things in GW2 are Generous. I just recently stopped playing ESO and dang… Talk about expensive. I’m glad to buy things and support Anet considering the prices aren’t to crazy : )

id like this game to not have the ability to change gold for gems then these prices would be abit lower and they would make full value of a sale.

They always get the full value of a sale.

Gem as a virtual currency can only be created by paying real money to Anet.

If anything, gold/gem exchange helps Anet earn more. Because they can take 15 percent transaction fee off every exchange.

They dont make more because i can buy gems with gold regardless of who bought gold or when just with a smaller ratio. In Fact i have gone the whole game completely free whereas if they had a traditional shop. They would have me paying reall money for their stuff on the gemstore. And if they were doing fine then we wouldnt have untested thing thrown in the game (not hating on anet just saying things how they are) and instead they would pay testers or a test server.

But every dollar you would have spent is a dollar someone else what have not spent (since they got it to convert). On top of that, you would likely not have bought as many gems with cash as you have done with gold. End result – fewer gems bought from A-net.

It’s not so cut and dried

No gold/gems conversion.
1) Gems only bought with real money to buy gemstore items

With gold/gems conversion
1) gems are bought with real money to sell for gold
2) gems are bought with real money to buy gemstore items
3) since people can buy gold with real money in game they’re less likely to buy from gold sellers. Which means fewer accounts hacked and stripped. Less botting by gold sellers. Fewer people sanctioned for buying gold. Last but certainly not least, lower costs to support for fixing all the problems caused by gold sellers.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Yes because cash-cow games like say World Of Warcraft never had any bugs in it. Ever.

It doesnt matter that you are buying gems for gold – you are still playing the game. Your very presence make other people want to play the game. And eventually somewhere down the road, someone buys gems when playing the game, because they like it and its still populated. GW2 being 5 years old and still active is a huge testament to its strength, considering it was released at a time most MMOs didnt even last 5 months.

This

I rather have the skins more expensive in the gemshop than gated behind RNG

And like others mentioned GW2 is no pay to play so Anet needs to make profit with the gemshop
