The problem with your game for me...
I agree. The progression to 80 is set at glacial pace unless you use munchkin methods. It’s not fun, it’s tedious.
What was wrong with GW1’s system? The levels there only served as a tutorial in getting you adjusted to different elements of the game – and then progression was all about learning new skills and mixing up your build. This is a Perfect approach to endgame in MMOs.
(I should mention I could never get into GW1 for other reasons, so I don’t know much beyond that.)
Name one other game where the AVERAGE rate of reaching max level is 5 days (and if you list Rift, you’re a liar.)
Name one other game where the AVERAGE rate of reaching max level is 5 days…
Uh, no. It’s definitely not 5 days.
Also, that’s still ludicrously long without lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of mechanics and content to chew through in-between.
Name one other game where the AVERAGE rate of reaching max level is 5 days (and if you list Rift, you’re a liar.)
I don’t know what you mean by 5 days. Do you mean playing as little as you want for 5 days and still reaching 80, or do you mean 5 days played time? I mean heck I can reach level 90 on a WoW character in 3/4 days tops.
I mean heck I can reach level 90 on a WoW character in 3/4 days tops.
I never played WoW beyond the trial 20 levels, and I thought the speed of progression to that height was pretty much perfect.
How does the rest of it compare to GW2? Faster, slower, more tedious, or less?
I kinda agree, but for a different reason.
They should’ve limited the max level to 40, giving 2 attribute points from level 5 onward.
This would mean at least half the designed world could be at max level, so our characters wouldn’t be downscaled (which doesn’t always properly work either) in 80% of the entire world. It would certainly make a lot more of the game feel like ‘endgame’, when you’re at max strength, it sure did in GW1.

The difference is that your main source of xp is dungeons and questing mostly. Or that is the absolute fastest route with a guild xp bonus to top it off. This is considering you have no heirlooms, which are items that help to boost your experience all the way up to 85 and also levels with you.
The speed of progression is all about your leveling strategy and trying to always get the most xp if you want to level faster.
Thanks.
Sounds like the situation similar to GW2 then, but with different methods of gaming the system.
The upcoming “WOW: Warlords of Draenor” will include a free “instant 90” boost for one character of any level, as in you can create a new level 1 and make it a 90, instantly, with upgraded gear and skills.
GW2 should sell such things in the gem store.
I have never had any trouble leveling in this game. Seriously, it goes so fast. Literally anything you do gives you experience points. If you go through each zone, and complete all heart quests along the way, you’ll easily reach level 80 before completing even half of all the zones. Crafting is also a really fast way to level. You may not have that many materials to fiddle around with at first, but as you gain levels your bank gradually fills up with them. Use a crafting booster, and then refine a large pile of materials in one go. You’ll fly through your levels.
Also, I recommend that once you reach Lion’s Arch, you use the gateways to travel to the other racial starting areas, and complete those as well.

Yeah, but WOW’s leveling system is an insanely tedious long grind. It already was that before they raised the cap even further. It takes really long to level that high in WOW, while you could easily reach level 20 or 30 in one day in GW2. Why would you want to skip basically the game’s content?

Mad Queen I have done crafting up to as max as I could, done storyline often but not caught up with it, and participate in events out in the game world and my thief is at 24 hours played and only level 31.
Is that it is a pain in the butt to level. I have to practically do everything I can in a zone in order to progress. This concern is not at all mine alone. I have read many other concerns as such and hate having to chase down events, world bosses, and do all the exploration and story content I can in order to get enough xp just to get to the next zone. I would love it if you guys at Anet instead let people pick and choose their content and give them the xp boost they need to level faster just doing what they like.
why dont we also get a legendary weapon of our choosing just for logging in, how about those ascended gear, we could get them too just by standing on LA fountain…

Sounds about right. My progression has been about the same, even though I would go out of my way to complete zones.
I can only guess Mad Queen is comparing GW2’s progression to some other incredibly over-the-top grindy experience. In which case it might be better, but that wouldn’t make it good.

GW1: Factions – Less than a day, I think a couple of hours?
Putting max level at 80 was in my humble opinion completely unnecessary. Level 40 or 50 would have been more than enough. You would just have earned your trait points in a much faster way, making it less tedious. The added advantage would have been more max level zones. (I didn’t forget downscaling but that is not well done either, since with a fully geared level 80 you can basically just wtfroflstomp through any explorable.)

only waste of time is this thread, have 3 lvl80s chars. only my first i got 100% map completion. my last one that i got to 80 i had 30% of the map discovered, so wen i say this thread looks like someone complaining about wanting things handed to him thats exactly how it feels. and dont event let me give you the exemple of someones post that says we should have an item like WOW has that can turn a lvl 1 to lvl 80 in a second cause that clearly isnt wanting to have stuff handed to you.
leveling to 80 without using crafting needs you to visit about 40% of the total map (have done it with less). That you are lvl 31 with only 24 hours played on a character does not sound really like a lot of effort and time has been invested.

I completley agree. What evil game would allow you to get to max level with in a few hours instead of days or weeks. I’m trying to think, Hmm? Oh yeah Guild wars 1!
Really? This is the very first MMO I’ve ever been able to stomach getting a fully leveled character, and now I have two and about to be three.
What do you want to do that requires lvl 80?

Because it’s true, Leveling is not hard but yes it is tedious the game is not alt friendly but I do have 3 lvl 80’s and an upcoming guardian aswell.. If I can do it.. why can’t you or anybody else complaining.. if your gonna say you have lives and stuff i’ll just laugh cause I do too..

It’s a very literal question “why do you need 80?” You, as a supporter of this thread, need to make arguments to support the idea. Complaining that you feel leveling is boring and/or tedious isn’t a good argument when the goal of this game is to keep you around for as long as possible.
IMO one of the problems with the game is that leveling is too quick. Experience needed to level should be about 150% of what it is now.
IMO one of the problems with the game is that leveling is too quick. Experience needed to level should be about 150% of what it is now.
Please don’t.
After you have reached max level on at least one character, there should be an option when creating the next character to choose if you want to level from scratch again or insta-80.
See, if there was a way to hit 80 in a couple of hours, maybe a day or two… fine that’s cool… The only way to do that is through craft which requires you to have $$$ (gold, or gems -> gold…), which is just….
As an example, D3. You can create staff of herding, and get a friend to power level you, takes literally a day or two. Creating the staff costs peanuts… There’s nothing like this in GW2…. craft? that doesn’t cost peanuts…
“Handed down to you” – it’s a kittening game. If your mindset is just set in stone with no hand outs…. I hope you end up without arms or legs, and no one feeds you, cuz hey… you want it to be just handed down to you? I maybe pushing it, but your also pushing it… as it’s just a game.

Why.

Especially considering there’s really nothing new there.
At least in most MMOs (I assume?) rolling a new class or race is REALLY like starting from scratch, but the difference between playing different professions in GW2 isn’t anything you can’t grasp – whoops, double negative – in a couple of hours tops. Not outright master, no, but you already know most of everything by playing one character.
So it’s just that much more tedious. No thrill of discovery, no rewards, no nothing.
I just wanted to start this thread to say that I wanted a way that I could just do events and get more experience doing that in each zone. Or get a buff for killing rares and doing events, cause frankly there seem to be several that people leave by the wayside now and don’t really care about.
I’m happy that some of you find it so very easy to level up in this game. I have tried the crafting = faster leveling thing without boosts and I got 10 or so levels by hitting I think 400ish on one of them. I have done storylines, explored, and done events and still have struggled to level out of a zone. The heart quests can be helpful but for some reason are not repeatable.
I just want to have fun in the game while I am playing it and make some progress while doing so. I do not want things handed to me for goodness sakes. I have an 80 Guardian who has already completed one aspect of the story so I know mostly what it is all about. Therefore, again, I want to just do want I want in order to progress through the zones while working on getting to level 80.
Apparently some people in this thread have completely misconstrued what I wrote. Hopefully this helps those who don’t understand to better understand.
So you want 80 because it’s there, and wonder why people think you’re asking for handouts.
Why doesn’t scaling work, in your opinion? Stats are too high? Too low? Have any math to prove it? Don’t make an argument or statement if you can’t defend it.
Leveling in this game is extremely easy. It has a linear (not exponential) levelling curve, meaning that every level is roughly equal in difficulty to the last because the XP rewards for everything go up even on the low level maps or when downscaled. Furthermore, eveyrthing in this game gives XP, so you can level any way that you like.
Please, if you think GW2 is hard to level in, don’t ever play any other MMO where you actually have to grind for your levels. You will want to enter a mental institution after killing something like 1,000 mobs for a single level in Everquest-style games…
P.S. You can level via WvW, Living Story or Champ trains if you prefer it fast. You can also eat food and utility consumeables for 15% bonus XP, get 30% more bonus XP from the laurel merchants daily, and get 50% bonus XP from boosters, and that’s not even counting guild banners or guild-wide boosts.
By the way, the story is non-linear. Its not possible to complete “every aspect” of it, unless you have three characters each of all five races. It forks off at many places especially in the early stories, and even two or three times during Trahearne’s Personal Story (most notably when the Pale Tree asks you what you are afraid of). Only about 40% of the PS stays the same across all characters, and only near the end.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

You can buy the rice food buff at any level for very little karma. Laurels are, indeed, account-wide. A guild does not need be ‘very’ advanced to have the ability to put out XP buffs. You need not be in any guild to take advantage of Guild Banners placed out in the world. Also, XP buffs are somewhat common from AP chests, Black Lion Chests (you can easily farm keys), and elsewhere. There are also XP buffs on other consumables easily crafted by many of the disciplines.

Trading post, usually.
They barely add anything though. It’s more useful for stats increase or magic find, but good food can cost a lot of coin. Laurel and ordinary experience boosters, however, are costly and pointless. Don’t ever buy them.
In short, lots of things boost your experience by so little you won’t even notice it.
Probably the most useful booster is your Daily, which gives 5% (I don’t know) of your current level per completed task. But obviously this way it’d take a couple of months worth of dailies…
Second most-powerful boost is killing mobs that haven’t been killed in a long while, which can give bonus XP in thousands – and given how barrens most locations are, these aren’t too hard to find. Especially near Orr.

I guess karma vendors somewhere and laurel vendors could help me out some.

@OP
I don’t really think the number of the level is the one single issue that exists in PvE. It’s really more that people don’t have the option to get to max level by doing the things that they like.
Using myself as an example. I like challenging content, a good story, and learning to play different play styles. Also I don’t like using my time in a way that I am not learning or entertained.
If I just go through PvE doing the story I can’t because of the power gating that occurs. That does make the content more challenging, but it quickly gets to the point where it’s not worth my time to bang my head against that wall.
If I just go to the challenging content in PvE with a new character, I can’t, because I’m not at an adequate level.
If I just want to learn a new playstyle with a new character, I can do that in a limited sense, but I don’t have everything available in PvE until level 80. So I very quickly learn how to use all the weapons, but can’t do anything else until I progress levels, which doesn’t happen at a pace I feel is worth my time unless I craft level, which requires a lot of resources that take a lot of time to get.
Basically the way I have to allocate my time in this game with alts isn’t worth my time, because the world is not new and I know what I like and don’t like about it. Additionally on my main, content is not interesting enough to cause me to want to login except for the 4 hours or less it take to get through the new content.
The game isn’t designed in a way that appeals to me spending time playing it, except for a handful of hours every other week.
That said, it is designed in a way that appeals to other people, and ANet continues to cater towards that crowd, because they know how to monetize their efforts far more from that crowd. That leaves people like me SoL, but that’s life and there’s other things people can spend their time on that they do enjoy.
Someone like me continues to post in the forums though, to gain perspective and try and influence ANet to make decisions that cater to a wider net of players that includes myself and others.

I am absolutely stunned at this post.
GW2 has, hands down, the most stupidly easy leveling process in any MMO I’ve played in the last 13+ years.
8 hours to level 80 by crafting is an established metric.
Average leveling time 1-2 months around release was 1.5 – 2 weeks for first level 80.
Food has 10% exp booster built in, there are exp boosters avail via gem store, personal stories…. just playing normally…. very easy to level out of the zone before completing every scrap of heart/event etcetera in the zone.
Running around the 5 major cities plus Lion’s Arch: Divinity’s Reach, Hoelbrak, Rata Sum, The Grove, The Black Citadel, non-combat, just picking up waypoints, and Points of Interest, can earn a couple of levels (especially starting at level 2).
Don’t like stories? Don’t need to do them. There are multiple zones at the same level and the ability to pick and choose which hearts / zones are appealing.
Don’t like PvE? Level up in WvW. It might be a bit frustrating even if you’re up-ranked to level 80, or on a low-pop server, but it is certainly doable.
I hate to toss in the age-old, “join a guild” here. There’s a lot to be said for a helpful group of like-minded players who would be happy to run dungeons at the appropriate level. Doing dungeons at level the first time grants almost a full level.
@OP: if you don’t like stories, hearts, events, bosses, what kind of content are you looking for?
-Seriously confused
-Owner of 45 alts, 19 at level 80.
Are people really trying to say that it’s easier to level in WoW than it is in GW2?
I love how leveling works in GW2. I don’t think GW2 is terribly alt friendly, but that’s a totally different topic. I think the experience of leveling is the best I’ve found, for how I play.

Leveling in gw2 was the best leveling experience of any mmo. It is the engame thatis borderline atrocious…i.e. living story
