Remember when we first started playing guild wars 2, and the common joke was “Hey a blue and a green, or oh yh i got 2 greens shake it gurl”. The rewards system was such a joke then. Tbh, when you look deep enough, its still the same now.

Blues and greens are the majority of the rewards we get. Its just that we may receive them through a champ bag, or a wintersday gift, a collection reward that gives us some fancy named exotic box filled with blues and greens, or a daily. Its also that we receive such a huge quantity of them. Its like in Anets mind, the quantity replaces the quality. Id prefer getting a unique reward that is tied to the event/achievement/whatever that I completed, rather than 10 boxes filled with blues and greens and scraps.

Anet’s only gotten slightly better at this but they are still not really seeing the point. However this is tied to a certain fact. The game is about cosmetics, and nearly all the cosmetics in this game can be bought with gold = real life money. You get gold by farming. Farmings bags that give you more blues and greens, and a few silver. Blue and greens and occasionally rares that you can salvage and then sell the mats to obtain more gold.

This game needs more unique rewards. Especially cosmetic rewards since the majority are already bought with whats essentially real life money and not the completion of any specific task in game. The system just gets really really dry and thoughtless/superficial after a while. Its almost like giving someone money for christmas, it takes zero thought to do.

There are rewards in this game?

I can’t remember the last time I got something from the seventyhundred varieties of box that I actually wanted. I’d kill for a setting to autosalvage all the garbage I get at this rate.

I agree, there’s too much junk and too much busywork. Sometimes seems like they’re designing things to keep us busy so we don’t realise how empty some parts of the game are. I still have an issue with junk loot, endless clicking for essences of luck, piles and piles of Ascended materials with limited use, bags within bags within chests. After 3k hours in this game I’ve gotten used to rubbish drops, I just wish they’d streamline more of it. Give me copper and save me those trips to the merchant selling monster parts. That’s fine at lower levels but really ought to end when we start saving the god-kitten ed world. Have luck ‘deposited’ directly to my account after the salvage. There is absolutely no use for the physical essences, except to annoy me.

It’s a somewhat unpopular opinion, but when Ascended crafting was introduced I expected things to ‘scale up’ accordingly. I.e We’d get Ascended drops as often as Exotic prior to the patch, Exotics like rares and so on. Even if most were bound items like the fractal drops, it’d be times better than constant salvage fodder (Perhaps ANet’s offices run on energy produced by our mouse-clicks.)

Things are a lot better now, though. Ambrite weapons and the Carapace set are pretty accessible, and earned exclusively through gameplay. Hexed outfit was practically given away too. I think it would satisfy most of us if every large scale update featured quality skins for us to unlock in-game.

Because you can be rewarded doing anything (see ‘play your way’), you rarely get rewarded at all. It’s the down side of separating rewards from specific content.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

Its just one of the (many) downfalls of this game in particular. Theres a rewarding experience getting a TON of blues and greens, because all that stuff salvages down into crafting mats, which are then converted into exotics or ascended armors. I somewhat like the system, as it feels rewarding. However, it will only last so long.

Without a doubt, the game needs an influx, and not just 1-3 armor sets, but a HUGE influx of armor and weapon skins added. It all goes back to the xpac threads and the need for one. Anet is at a very crucial impasse right now and if they can swing a “Burning Crusade” this year, all this bickering and complaining on the forums may finally come to an end for a while. At least thats what i’m hoping for. Lets just pray they do the smart thing, and roll out a huge chunk of content to keep people enthralled.

imo, after playing gw2 for 2.5 years, the most frustrating part of this game, above and beyond anything, is the reward system.
It is deflating, and it’s a grind.
Every other game I’ve ever played it’s been “oh goodie, a chest!! How exiting, I can’t wait to see what I get!”… until GW2.
Now, chests/bags mean almost nothing. There’s no excitement or anticipation. “It’s a bunch of time spent, double-clicking, with disappointing results”. Even worse, I get a bunch of bloodstone dust and those dastardly purple things, which I physically have to destroy. Can’t even get a copper for them.
“I want that skin!” Sigh, great. Now I have an untold amount of hours/days/weeks of grind-farming/harvesting ahead of me.
If it wasn’t for the fun I have with friends in WvW….

I want to stick around and keep loving this game, & after reading your article "Breaking the Paradigm: What "Beyond the Point of No Return Really Means, I do feel a bit more hopeful.
I thank you for that Tacktix.

To me loot = mats = money. They dump so many blues and greens on you they really have no value other than salvage fodder.

I will say, however, that I get significantly more yellows than I ever used to. I’m sure my magic find % has something to do with it, but running EoTM for 2hrs (for example), I usually end up with 15-20 Rares. Exotics I’ve seen no noticeable increase in drops, unless you count Recipes…

You know, now that I think about it, I should actually quantify the mats I get from all of the greens and blues I salvage. I’m wondering if the mats end up being worth more than if you were to just sell them all to vendor. Some greens sell for 3s, which adds up considering the sheer volume you get.

Also remember: salvaging items = essences of luck. Unless you are at 300% MF, the more items to salvage the better.

But to your original point: yes, the loot system is very underwhelming.

I especially hate when my character says “Rare loot!” or “That’s valuable!”, when he’s referring to bloodstone dust or something lol. Lies!

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

What else do you want to drop? Think about it is there any thing else? GW2 is not a treadmill game your just not going to get better gear then what your crafting and you get most of the mats from playing the game.

GW2 has some of the most unique skins and the ability to use these skins at any level of play. Now that your able to store these skins for reuse have you not found a few that you liked? If not i am not sure if there will ever be a set out there for you.

At a point it gets silly the drop spam in GW2 is kind of crazy on-top of having your own person lot from mobs chest i am not sure if there is an mmorpg out there that is more generous then GW2.

I hate all those EXOTIC boxes that drop greens. Why the kitten you even call them exotic. Rename it to green boxes and if you get an exotic box you get exotic item. Period.

Then exotic would be as worthless in ppl views as greens are now.

Valuable of items is related to there rarely of drop. If you always get an item type then it has no value much like blood dust but the harder to get items say champ weapons have a higher value because they are less likely to drop.

Over all i am at a complete lost its like listening to some one say “i want an item now but because i cant get it i will say ALL items drop badly” once they get this item they tend to be content with the drop rate because they now have the rare item that others do not.

This is the problem. You know why? Because an expansion is NOT THE SMART THING TO DO. Think for a second. All content in the game is currently available to every player at no additional cost, with the one exception of Living Story missions that you missed entirely. Now, what would happen if they made a paid expansion? All of that content would only be available to people who buy the expansion.

Not to mention that anything ANet could do with an expansion can be accomplished through the Living Story, and it won’t cost us a dime. You expansion pushers need to learn a little patience. ANet is trying something different here, and it’s actually working; why on Earth would they backpedal all over that and go back to an outdated model? Because less than 5% of the players have come on to the forums demanding an expansion, insisting that everybody wants it?

Also, there is literally nothing ANet can do that would end bickering on the forums, because that bickering is caused by immature people who want only to feel like they are better than their peers. It will always be this way, for as long as humanity (as we know it)exists.

Actually there’s an idea floating around that would eliminate that problem.
Make the maps, the stories, the quests, free and put the other stuff like new races, new classes, etc… in the gemstore.

I don’t really think that Anet has issues creating a better reward system but rather than they are not willing to. The point is to make all parts of the game (or at least most parts of the game) as rewarding in which case it doesn’t matter if you run an easier dungeon or a harder one. This will give a chance to all players to progress by farming instead of being ’’forced’’ to get better at the game for the sake of the rewards.

While I would love to see a reward-system that has more depth, I would personally await alot of rage threads with players complaining as to why they are forced to play the hard content to get rewarded.

The game will eventually die without an expansion because none else than existing players care about checking the Living Story. Expansions are rather about promotional impact. They aren’t only about sales. To create that commercial impact to gain popularitya gain, GW2 needs something more traditional like an expansion.

I just did Frozen Maw and the rewards I received was more like a slap in the face. I have many pieces of gear on that could use a serious upgrade. Why not make upgrades drop for me since I can only do those events ONCE per day?
Im about to hit level 30. Out of every heart I’ve completed in 3 different zones, only about 5% of them had SOMETHING with stats I could use that was an upgrade. Everything else wasn’t worth the karma. Really disappointing to finish hearts, head to the vendor only to find useless gear for sale 90% of the time.

Anyone who’s played this game long enough knows never to throw anything out.

I’d like to filter out the trophies, greens, and blues entirely. I have no interest in salvaging them. The only thing I seem to get through doing so is more “luck”, but I’ve been getting that since they did away with MF and my drops are still crap.

The rewards are lackluster in PvE, and they’re an outright spit in the face in WvW.

Yes OP this is the most unrewarding of any MMO I have played. I figured it only takes me a minute to login each day and click the daily this month. But still that’s 28 minutes and will not be logging in again till they bring out a new set of Legendaries with reasonable requirements or do something to actually make the game fun. However the forums are always entertaining to read and post in. But the game unfortunately is not as entertaining as the forums.

Well I’m at 200% Magic find base, and with boosters and food and all I tend to reach 350-400% regularly, and I still get an occasional drop… I am at a point I need 20k+ luck for each level now and getting my MF up is no longer a wish, but I salvage all blues and greens ASAP and yellows as well tbh… Only exotics tend to be sold and I get my money from dungeons runs… In WvW however the drops are laughable… even if you are able to pick everyting up It seldom brings something usefull leaving only levelling chests, wich tend to be very slow in BL and EBG (well I scout a lot) leaving EotM for a bit better loot….

I posted a while before since they introduced ascended, maybe they should raise the level of all drops 1 level as well, bllues becoming greens, greens yellow, yellow orange and the orange pink….. They could replace the pink with a precursor, making a legendary accessible again… or combine the present chance of both, They should remain extremely rare I got an ascended chest once, and a precursor once in 5500 hours of play…. But I think it would solve things…
