Now we all want great things for the next Xpacks Mastery lines. So to nudge ANet away from bad ideas (and for a little light hearted fun), what are bad, awful, pointless Mastery lines or ways to get Mastery points.

Here are my suggestions

1) The Mastery line: Walk This Way
- when you arrive on the first new map of the next expansion, your character can only roleplay walk. You will need to fill out this Mastery line to get back the ability to run.

2) The new, improved Mastery line system, RNG Masteries: ’You’ll Achieve Your Dreams In The End (or maybe not)’.
- After complaints that many were able to get all Masteries in a short time, leaving them nothing to do, the Mastery system has been reworked to allow repeateable Masteries. Reaching the end point get you an RNG chance to complete the mastery. If you fail the dice role the Mastery line and Mastery points for that line are reset to zero. This allows players to redo Mastery lines and to reacquire Mastery points to give the new XPac increased playability.

3) The ‘We Hear You Don’t Like Mystic Coin Prices’ Mastery line. After reading all the complaints about the cost of crafting precursors ANet has added a new way to get the precursors for the new expack Legendary weapons that is completely free and allows players to work towards their goals.
- Reaching the end of this one point Mastery line will unlock one of the new Legendary weapon’s precursors and is the only way to unlock them. To select a precursor of your choice you need to progress the Mastery line by killing 10k ambients on one specific island. There will be 100 ambients on the island with a 3 minute respawn timer for each. To encourage exciting competition and reduce grind there will also be hourly Leaderboards contests for the most ambients killed where the highest daily Leaderboard winner will get 400 gems. This Mastery line is repeatable to allow people to get all the newest Legendaries

4) So many request for duels has led to the ‘Duel Me Bro’ Mastery Line
- This allows you to be red to anyone of your choice. The other players do not need to have this Mastery line to particapate. The first Masterly line allows you duel up to 10 times in 24 hours. Higher Mastery lines increases this cap.

5) The ‘You Wanted Mounts, Here They Are’ Mastery line
- at this end of this line you select a mount of your choice from a panel of 10. Each mount has increased speed where the % increase is higher the larger the mount. The Pony mount starts off with +10% speed. The Winged Elephant mount has +45%. Each mount is only useable in WvW, racial cities and Lions Arch.

Edit: spelling

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

“Dance, dance Revolution mastery.”
Together with Konami, Anet presents the new dance mastery.
Meet exciting new foes like the enraged father that does not want his son to dance, the exotic Cantha dance masters who excite you in 2 hour bollywood movies, the jealous tryhard student trying to topple you or the beautiful tomboy that will be your girlfriend in the end!

Encounter mystical masters of the dance like Tohn Javolta, Wobbie Rilliams, BAAB or the Gee Bees in this new dance themed map and dance your way around your foes instead of battling them. Each master of the dance has written down his knowledge in a tome that is on sale for 1000 gems only!

Comes together with the new Bard class and even more mystical master of the dance like Jichael Mackson, Srank Finatra or Conny Jash can also be your revenant legend!

even though its a trollpost, I want to clarify that the mystic coin issue is not with the legendaries, but rather, the many collections that are affected by it. Mystic weapons are one example, needed for the specialization collections.

Right now, they’re at a price I can manage, but if it climbs any higher I can see why people think crafting with them becomes impossible

The new mastery EVERYONE was waiting for!

New Mastery: Climbing (the pay wall)
Start point of the new maps will be a pit, surrounded by climbable, huge walls. The mastery has 6 steps and a challenging surprise.
1) By walking towards a wall and pressing your special button, you attach yourself at the wall. You are now able to climb! Just sideways for now and the stamina bar depletes super fast, so better keep standing.
2) You are tired of sticking to a wall, 1 feet above the ground? Not any longer! Now you can climb upwards! Oh, and the neat stamina bar? It depletes even faster now! But you may climb upwards for as long as you want, which is max. 4 seconds due to stamina loss! Progress!
3) Halfway done! Not only the mastery, but now you are able to replenish the stamina bar with small fees! The “refill” button appears at 50% of your stamina bar. Each refill costs some silvers of your gold, increasing your stamina by 10%. Be aware that each refill will cost more than the previous.
4) It’s done! No, not the mastery, but the stamina bar and the constant expensive replenishing. Now the stamina bar will be refilled automatically each time it drops under 75%! Endless possibilities!
5) Wall jumps are now enabled, you may leap upwards for 50% of your stamina bar! The distance is huge but so is the refill cost!
6) The last mastery step lets you climb downwards! No more boring gliding (which is deactivated in our new maps anyway)!

Sounds like fun? It sure does! But we promised a nice little challenging surprise for you and we are sure it will bring you as much fun as we anticipate:
Instead of mastery points (which you cannot get in that starter area, the pit, you remember?) you “climb the (pay)wall”! Yes, to unlock the mastery steps you pay gems!
The price will double for each step, but it’s starting with 100 gems, how expensive could it get, eh?

Forum Mastery:

  • Tier 1 (Necrotizing Fasciitis) allows you to resurrect threads that we last updated six months ago or longer.
  • Tier 2 (Felis Domesticus) allows you to substitute cat in place of kitten for the profanity filter.
  • Tier 3 (Samsonitus Luggicus) aka Baggage Removal, hides posts from anyone who has posted more often than twice in the last hour in the same thread, replied to more than 4 unique posters in the same day, or replied more than 3 times to you in the same day.
  • Tier 4 (Editorialogicus) Automatically adds paragraph breaks to stream-of-consciousness posts.

I want that forum mastery line!

I think this one would fix a lot of complaints on the forums.

~ Legendary Effects Mastery ~

  • T1 – Legendary footfalls now last 2 minutes.
  • T2 – Legendary auras are now 3x the size of your character. Also effects infusions and other visual enhancements.
  • T3 – Legendary sounds are now 5x louder. All legendaries which have no sounds now do.
  • T4 – All legendary effects now stack with one another, including the second weapon set. All combat-related visual effects are now on 100% of the time.
  • T5 – Equipping a legendary now places a giant “NOTICE ME” sign above the player. All weapon trails and footfalls become arrows pointing back to the player using the weapon. Auras become a cloud of arrows pointing to the player. All of these are exactly the same to ensure that no legendary is considered “better” any longer.
  • T6 – Any player attempting to rotate their camera away from a player using a legendary will have their screen automatically pointed at that character and locked in place for 5 seconds. Using a positive emote (like /cheer, /bow, or the new /worship emote) will break this effect.

Electro’s post suggests another mastery: Size Matters

  • T1: Tis Better to Have Loved a Short (Than Never to Have Loved a Tall) — Norns automatically resize to asura height in no-fly zones (i.e. at trickier JPs)
  • T2: Predatory Envy — Weapons automatically resize to be the same height/width/length as they would be on Norns, even for Asura.
  • T3: Clippin? We don’t care about no stinkin’ clippin! — allows any skin to be used on any toon, regardless of race or class.
  • T4: CC to Break Immersion — Any weapon skin can be used on any weapon; any armor skin on any armor. You want your sword to look like a staff? Have at it. You want Wings on your head? They are yours, if you dare.

Container Mastery

After receiving much feedback on the containers that are acquired as rewards, we have decided to make the containers a more intricate and engaging part of the game. We hope this will increase the player’s immersion in the world.

In order to encourage players to pursue the tracks, the ability to open any kind of container has been removed without a specific Container Opening Tool until the first level of this mastery has been unlocked We think it will allow players to rediscover the joy of opening containers.

Level 1— Super packaging. Containers are contained inside 10 larger containers. We hope that will make attaining loot more intricate and involved
Level 2— Safe Packaging. All items retrieved to and from the bank will now be transferred via containers. A fee of 5 copper is required per packaging.
Level 3 — Custom Packaging. You can now reskin containers. Available from the gem store
Level 4 — Environmentally Safe Packaging-- Your containers are now made of “green” material that is safe for Tyria’s environment. All cooking materials are now screened by the Tyria Health and Safety department which will charge 1 copper per inspection. Note that carrying containers across different map zones may require additional forms. Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing.

Level 5— Compassionate Packaging. In order to raise awareness and appreciation for the differences between the denizens of Tyria we have altered container names to be more sensitive to different groups.

  • “Bag of Skitt Shinies” is now “Bag of SHINY!!!!!!!” to no longer perpetuate the stereotype that all skritt are into shiny objects
  • " Bag of Booty" has been renamed “Bag of Economically Acquired Proceeds” This was due to pirates complaining that the name was slanderous and also the butt of many a joke.
  • " Bag of Stolen Goods" has been renamed “Bag of Borrowed Goods” as not everything on a bandit is stolen. (just most of them)
  • “Moldy Bags” have been renamed “Undead Bags”. This is to recognize that not all undead are moldy or otherwise unhygienic.

In order to celebrate this, players will now have to type the name of the object they are opening each time they open it. We hope this will improve awareness of the struggles that befall all those that live in Tyria.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Which leads to the “Ignore Effects Mastery Line.” 5 Tiers lower the intensity of things like legendary footfalls, player music, costume brawl, etc. by 15%. The 6th tier lowers their effects to nothing, and offers an option to remove the annoying “Revive others” prompts that get in the way. Players could of course still click on the downed/defeated player and F to revive. As a final bonus (T6 is loaded), T6 grants access to a special effects slider.

2) The new, improved Mastery line system, RNG Masteries: ’You’ll Achieve Your Dreams In The End (or maybe not)’.

This allows players to redo Mastery lines and to reacquire Mastery points to give the new XPac increased playability.

This Mastery line has a lot of potential :-)) If it has more tiers – like the Maguma Masteries, it can be extended to cover more areas of the game – but for this I think it should be a core game Mastery – well, if at the installation of the expansion the RNG will decide if it is a core or a Maguma or a New Expansion Mastery :-))
T1: RNG applied to lvl: If you have enough XP for lvl-up, a check is performed. According to the result you may gain a lvl or stay at the same lvl or you can go down one lvl.
T2. Reward system: When you completes something and a reward is in place, you will receive a … RNG check. If you pass it, you will receive the reward packed according to the Container Mastery suggestion. If not passed, the value of the reward will be taken from your gold.
T3. Using a skill :-)) If you pass the RNG check you will perform that skill. If not, a new RNG check is performed: You pass it – that means you are safe – nothing happens. But if you fail, the entire effect of your skill is turn against you.

With T3 nobody will complain anymore about skill balance. With so much RNG nobody will be able to balance something. (although some may say that we already have this reality).

I am sorry to say this ArenaNet, but The Worst Mastery system Ever is what we have now.

So now we have this:
1. Fill up xp bar, then fetch separate Mastery points from map and spent. That is clumsy system.

2. You loose all extra xp points if you don’t have enough mastery points to spent and you have filled up all those mastery lines and you are not good enough to get Mastery points anymore either.

I have high hopes that ArenaNet will do in a future fix this mastery system as they did with traits and specializations.

So what kind of change?
1. Those who have HoT: They choose mastery line what you want to work. Fill up the experience bar and character will earn Mastery point, when xp bar has been filled up. Then that xp bar will start to fill up again. You need to fill up that xp bar as many times as you need Mastery points. It is not so fast, but at least you are earning them all. (Yes I mean even 12 times or 15 times fill up that yellow xp bar.)

2. Those who does not have HoT: Can only earn Spirit Shards when they fill up that xp bar.

3. Those HoT players who have all Mastery points earned, anticipate that there will come more mastery lines in Living story / Expansion, can earn extra Mastery points just filling up that xp bar by playing. If they don’t want to earn them, then there is same kind of system what is in WvW reward system. You choose from that little box, what is top frame of the little map and choose, Spirit Shard line or Mastery point line. So in that way you are handling by yourself what you are earning; Spirit Shards or Mastery points.

I know, I know, People will yell now: “Don’t touch system what is working!” But you can make that working system more player friendly, you know. It is not easy change, but it will quarantee that everybody will get possibility to earn all Mastery points. Even casual ones. They just need to work for longer to get those Mastery points and they will do it eventually.

Someone didn’t understand the OP’s post at all.

T2: When your character’s inventory is full, they move at ½ speed and make occasional muffled complaints. You will no longer receive a pop-up window showing what your character cannot loot.

T3: Every character is required to eat food and drink something every 5 hours, or else take cumulative penalties to power, toughness, health, movement speed, and endurance for every meal missed until they eat and drink. The timer is active even when logged out. When a meal is missed, the character’s stomach occasionally growls.

T4: If two consecutive weeks’ worth of meals are missed, the character is automatically deleted. Rangers are the exception: instead of automatic deletion, every 2 weeks they permanently lose a pet due to eating it.

T5: Weather now affects your character, and is tied to outfits and armor skins. Your character will take damage over time and/or stat penalties when wearing the wrong outfit/armor for the zone they’re in.

the Mastery line: “Its always Halloween now”
With the unlock of this mastery line NPCs from Halloween randomly appear on any map for some unexpected, spooky fun. For example, the Labyrinthine Horror could suddenly appear beside you when you’re doing events and chase you and your friends down with his chain saw. Or the Mad King could appear in WvW and force players to do Mad King says. He will also knock people down across the entire map, whether they can hear him or not. The Grand High Viscount of Candy Corn could appear in the middle of a PvP match and start pelting people with candy and the Legendary Skeletal Lich could appear inside Living Story instances to give the player a bit more challenge.

Bug: Because they appear outside the Labyrinth they do not leash and return to their spawn point but will chase the player and continuously attack him until he logs out. ANet is aware of this bug and hopes to have a fix available soon™

More Accessible Raids Track

  • This mastery unlocks a raid mode where all boss encounters are costume brawls. Raid currency is absent from this mode. Reward for defeating each encounter is a “Sense of Achievement” consumable item that grants 1,000 Karma. Capped 1 per encounter, per account.

Too Fast, Too Casual Track

  • This mastery negates stat gains from armors, trinkets, and weapons. Only weapon attack power is effective and your health pool is reduced to what it would be at level 1. This applies to core Tyria maps and dungeons only.

Combat Operation! Track

  • Reviving a downed or defeated ally now requires positioning and only repairs an ally’s armor piece for the area you tend to them. On a successful revive and repair, gain an item based on that body part. If reviving a part that does not have damaged or broken armor, that ally’s armor part becomes broken.

Items gained on success:
-Helmet: Apple with “Adam” etched on it or an ice cream cone.
-Shoulders and Gloves: Pencil or a comically-shaped bone.
-Chest: Broken heart-shaped locket, 2-3 butterflies, or bread basket.
-Pants and Boots: Miniature Horse (rare drop), pail of water, wrench, or rubber band.

PET PRECISION & DPS TESTS -OUTDATED-
Will update once Path of Fire releases.

T1: Loading screens now last 15 minutes. Your character will be visible in the world during this time, and can be attacked by hostile creatures. Armor repair costs have been reimplimented.

T2: Using a waypoint has a 15% chance to teleport your character to a random waypoint instead.

T3: Your blocked list and your friends list switch functions. Once a day a random item stored in your bank will be mailed to someone on your blocked list, along with a romantic note.

T4: Anything you type in party, squad, and guild chat is automatically translated to Latin.

T5: NPC merchants will randomly stop buying/selling with you while you’re interacting with them, and not allow you re-initiate trade with them for 24 hours.

T6: The TP will not allow you to take your money or items unless you first emote /beg.

I think they understood it perfectly. It’s not their fault that you don’t agree

The post was meant to be humorous. It’s satire. When you respond to satire seriously, you didn’t get the post. I wouldn’t log into the SNL forums to post serious political rhetoric on a satire. lol

Solo Mastery
For the person who wants to be most specialest snowflake.
Tier 1 does nothing
Tier 2 doesn’t seem to make much of a difference
Tier 3 no chat appears for you
Tier 4 only the 10 people closest to you are shown
Tier 5 You are the only person on your map apart from NPCs. No sign of any players. Now you can truly feel like you’re soloing the game.

Carry Me Bro Mastery
Mainly aimed at instance content like dungeons.
Tier 1 you pick up your team mate and carry them round. You put them down when in combat. Movement speed decreased to 5% but is affected by speed boosts.
Tier 2 You can put them down and pick them up outside of combat.
Tier 3 Movement speed whilst carrying is now only decreased to 50%
Tier 4 You can now carry two people at once, ideal for getting past those red circles on the floor that are so hard to see.
Tier 5 You can now wield the person you are carrying as a melee weapon. They take falling damage from any hits.

MicroManagement Mastery
For the OCD leader in all of us
Tier 1 you can put people in your group into sub groups even if you don’t have the commander mastery
Tier 2 you can now move those groups prior to combat to set up an encounter
Tier 3 everything you say is echoe’d in local, map, party and squad chats
Tier 4 you can move groups whilst in combat
Tier 5 when you empty your pockets, so does everyone else. Applies whenever there is a vendor present.

The Monsters are Too Easy Mastery
For all those complaining on the forums
Tier 1 Every mob now has a chance of a debuff
Tier 2 Every mob now has a chance to crit
Tier 3 Every mob now has a buff
Tier 4 Every mob can now summon another mob as a pet
Tier 5 Every mob can now appear at any level on any map and will attack only you or anyone partied with you who attacks the mob. Leashing is removed from mobs and they can follow you across maps and wait for you to log back in if you log off.
Tier 6 Every mob can now do any attack of any other mob. As the animation department is overworked and understaffed, in some cases attacks will not be signaled by any animation and in others animations from other mobs/attacks may be used as placeholders.

Blame Abaddon, he loves your tears.

I’m not seeing any drawbacks to this idea. O.o

I could see it severely impacting work flow for each of the people/teams… more so when it’d first be implemented, but definitely from then on. One question wouldn’t take long, but when it’s 50? 100?

Then there will be those who’ll try to pass off multiple questions as one. I have a suspicion that it’d happen more than just occasionally. That’s just a sucky thing for them to have to deal with.

I tried to word it in such a way that it’d (hopefully) not impact the people/teams too severely by having it be a singly allowed question, but that raises the issue of a person getting a one-time benefit for all the xp, points, and time put into filling out so many tiers of a mastery…. and on top of that it’s an out-of-game reward for doing something in-game. Both of those factors don’t feel like good design to me.

Btw, this thread is fun. Thanks for thinking of it, JaFW. I tried approaching it by thinking about all the regular forum complaints, and then think of a mastery-based solution. In other words, “there’s a track for that.” It’s serindipidous that they’re also… problematic.

The first ever PvP mastery!

Tier 1 Salt – by raging at your opponents and teammates while losing, as you walk, salt partials drop from your character

Tier 2 More Salt – Your saltiness increases as now not only are opponents and teammates victims, but the lobby hears your salty rants on a daily basis. When defeated in a map, your opponent gets a bag of salt.

Tier 3 Even More Salt – the devs and forums are no longer safe from your saltiness as you spam how losing isn’t your fault and devs don’t know how to balance a simple game. Players near you suffer a debuff of “high blood pressure” which only warns them how salty you are.

Tier 4 You Are Salt – you become a block of salt, unable to attack, defend, move, or talk
