Theory about gems to gold from other players
So what we should expect to start seeing is the cost of gold to gems get lower and lower with the nerfs to popular activities and the increase of soul bound and account Bound items that have been slowly coming into the game?
My issues lie with the fact that gold to gems cost has risen by 100g over the past 18 or so months. But then, if people buy gems with gold and then buy store item then they are destroyed. So at some point there will be no gems left in the pool. This is a realistic possibility without Anet replenishing the gems in the pool.

We might see a slow in the increase, yes. In fact, it has already dropped off quite a bit since September. As has already been expained, the gem pool emptying isn’t very realistic. The closer it gets to 0, the (exponentially) more expensive buying gems using gold will be. Less people will be willing to pay that much, and more and more people will be willing to convert gems (or $ to gems) into gold, replenishing it. Supply and demand, quite beautiful actually.
To those saying that there is no new gold coming into the game.
They did add a gold faucet with the HoT. The Shiny Bauble worth 30 silver each when you sell them to a NPC merchant. Each one, gained from events done in the old and new maps where this is an event reward, adds 30 new silver to the economy.
Basically, what they did was take the gold from running dungeons and spread it across the player base to those doing events in the open world in those maps. When you consider how many are doing events on those maps and getting these baubles, the gold coming in is probably very similar to the dungeon gold. The difference is it’s not concentrated on the dungeon runners, but given at a steady rate among the event players. It’s lower per player, because it’s more spread out but it’s likely similar volume wise in the aggregate.
ANet may give it to you.
Good post, thank you for that reply.
So it all comes down to what anet expects from the exchange, more so, how does anet expect to benefit from the exchange. It would not be in their interests for gems to be available in the pool for a much cheaper amount of gold, as this would mean people would certainly opt to trade gold for gems rather than paying cash for them.
An interesting debate indeed :-)
Only God know’s how many of those gold and item sellers is actually Arena Net…
