There are cosmetic mounts in GW2 already
Except they are Town Clothing only and only last for a limited time. You can only use the Witch’s Broom with Town Clothing equipped. And it only lasts for a few minutes before it vanishes and you have to recast it.
Not the same as a mount.
A mount in any game you can use at any time, regardless of your outfit. And they don’t have a time limit on them on how long you can ride it before it vanishes. They last until you unsummon them.

Sorry it is still a mount, it lasts for a very long time if you keep moving and you can use it in open world, i do all the time, aslong as your not in combat, you can travel all of tyria on it.
It is a mount…it lasts for me aslong as I need and I can use it whenever I like.
Well, in a lot of MMOs players did use them as prestige items, mostly just standing around on their rare mounts in the middle of town to show them off. GW2 will at least appeal to that crowd.

That’s your definition of a mount, and that’s fine. It doesn’t make TC’s definition of a mount any less valid though. I agree with OP. Cosmetic mounts all the way.
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.

Definitely, and trampling around LA atop a giant bear does sound fun. Moreover, I’m not sure if most people realize but you can switch to town clothing anywhere in the world.
I just wish ANet will add an option to auto switch to town clothes whenever you enter a town.
It is a mount as in, you sit on it. That’s about it. As for everything else, it is nothing like what a mount is. And I’m sure the millions of games out there that have mounts agree with my definition as well, otherwise all mounts in every game that has them would be like the Riding Broom. But they are not. They are like my definition.

Except for LotRO, which managed to implement mounts in mounted combat, all other MMOs have mounts merely as cosmetic items. It’s pretty much the same concept if GW2 would start to incorporate them as town clothing. The only difference would be that town clothes doesn’t come with a speed boost.

Sorry that is just not the case, it is a mount. Period.
I have played many mmo’s with mounts and by any definition it is a mount.

And it is only a temporary mount with a time limit and you can only use it while wearing town clothing. Sorry but that isn’t the same concept.
Take WoW for example (yes I know, but it’s the best comparison). You get a level 40 Frostsaber. Now imagine if you could only ride the Frostsaber if you were not wearing your armor and the Frostsaber only went as fast as your regular running speed and it only lasted for a few minutes and then vanished and as soon as you were hit with anything, it vanished as well. Then it would be like the Broom in GW2.
But it’s not like that. It increases your movement speed, it is permanent with no time limit, you can ride it while wearing your armor, and it doesn’t vanish if you get into combat (meaning you can keep riding even if someone shoots you).
So thus I say it is very different from a traditional mount.

If the only reason you are calling it a mount is cause you can sit on it, then sure. Call it a mount all you want. But other games will gladly prove you wrong on what a mount actually is compared to this broom.

It is definitely a mount.
I hope to see more cosmetic mounts in the future.

I think you need to recheck your facts, town clothing isn’t on a timer… They last until you take damage, or you unsummon them. I’ve practically stood in my witch’s outfit for hours in LA, so I’m not sure how you came upon this idea. In WoW your mount also disappears when you take damage, or unsummon it. Ergo, it’s purely a cosmetic item. In GW2 you get speed boosts elsewhere, so letting a mount act as one as well would be a bit redundant.
I think the only condition under which they should allow you to ride a mount while armored would be if they incorporate mounts into mounted combat, like LotRO did. Just like in WoW, the GW2 broom “mounts” are cosmetic items.

I didn’t say Town Clothing has a timer. The Riding Broom itself has a timer. You can only ride on the Broom for a limited time, not permanently.
And in WoW, you can take several shots before you are knocked off your mount. Sometimes you get knocked off instantly, other times you can ride on forever without being dismounted. But in GW2, in your Town Clothing on your Broom, if you get hit even once or get into combat in any way, you automatically switch to your gear, losing your Broom.
And in WoW, they are far from cosmetic items. Seeing as you need to use flying mounts to reach certain quest areas or objectives, they are a requirement to have.

I think the main thing here is the difference between “mount” and “cosmetic mount”.
GW2 doesn’t need mounts. The waypoint system is amazing, despite the fact that that money spent on WP warping adds up. WoW didn’t have that, so you either had to 1) Get on a mount 2) hop on a flight path or 3) Pay a mage for a portal. (I mained a mage in WoW, so hell yes, portals.)
I would, however, love to see cosmetic mounts in this game. Wouldn’t be that hard, I can see how it would easily work as a consumable item with unlimited uses. I would love to see some of the amazing creatures in this game parading around Lion’s Arch as mounts. Like a Karka or Devourer mount. Then, however, you have the problem of dismounting each time you go to a new area. But with cosmetic mounts, this is not really important.

Well, riding the witch’s broom acts as a costume brawl skill, we’ll need to wait and see if the next broom is also a brawling skill, which I highly doubt. If they do finally add mounts in the future, I highly doubt they’ll tied to brawler skills either, rather they’d be an actual cosmetic change.
And I must be the unluckiest WoW player, because in the five years I played, I’ve always been knocked of my mount when something attacked me, plus I can’t use skills from the mount, which just enforces the idea that they’re no more than mere cosmetics, just like town clothes in GW2.
We can debate trivialities all day, but on both camps the facts are the same. GW2 treats the broom as a cosmetic item and WoW treat its mounts as cosmetic items.

WoW mounts were not cosmetic. They flew and offered a speed boost. They had a function, and are therefore not cosmetic.

But again like I stated in my post that you quoted, but cut it off, mounts in WoW are not cosmetic. You need them to reach certain quest hubs, objectives, and even dungeons and raids to progress. Thus they are a requirement, not just cosmetic.

Nothing it offered gave you any edge in combat or made you a better player. And you can buy mounts from Blizzard for real money. Just like town clothes in the gem store, the one reflects the other in my eyes.
@SpyderArachnid
Alright, in WoW they gave flying mounts a purpose, and yet they still have ground mounts. People still collect them, even though the flying mounts basically took over their function in the game. Ground mounts in WoW take a very cosmetic stance, since people still desire them, even though they’ve been rendered obsolete.
But you’re welcome to feel differently. Let’s a agree to disagree then.

It is a mount. Is it like other mmo mounts? no, but neither is other mmo mounts all like each other.
Your trying to compare wow mounts to GW2 cosmetic mounts…
There both mounts….end of story.
Just because it doesn’t give you an edge in combat doesn’t mean it’s cosmetic. To make this simple, I provide source.

“used or done superficially to make something look better, more attractive, or more impressive: Alterations in the concert hall were only cosmetic and did nothing to improve the acoustics.”
Cosmetics serve absolutely no purpose other than appearance. The moment it does ANYTHING other than just sit there and look awesome, it no longer qualifies as “cosmetic”.

So your trying to say, because the broom moves around and looks awesome instead of sitting still and looking awsome….it’s not cosmetic….that’s some serious clutching at straws there my friend…
One could also say that the broom never moves or changes while looking awesome, it is the player that moves the broom, not the broom itself. There for it is a cosmetic mount. Deep man…deep thanks for clearing that up for me.
P.S. It’s still a mount. :P

That is opposite of what I’m saying. perhaps the phrase “SIT there and look awesome” was a poor choice of words on my part. But it does not provide any stat change, nor does it move faster than normal movement speed or fly. No change to weapon or utility skills. It does nothing to change performance whatsoever except look like something different. Therefore, it IS cosmetic.
I’m not saying it isn’t a mount. I am simply debating the difference between “cosmetic mount” and “mount” because there is a huge difference between the two.

And I agree with this. Never seen one in game, but I did at least watch the video in the OP and it is a cosmetic mount. I would love to see more implemented in the future.

Really? So now people are so kitten about no mounts being in game they resort to threads like this? The broom is not a freakin mount. It’s a town clothing accessory.

Except it’s not. Please, show me a mount that shoots bats, makes you melt, summons a cauldron, and summons a black cat. And seeing as there is only one skill on that “brawl weapon” that allows you to sit on it for a limited time, it is nothing like a mount.
I’m sorry but one skill on a “brawl weapon” that is for a limited time and only works while you are in town clothing is not considered a mount. It is one skill out of five skills that is tied to that weapon.

It’s still a mount. You say it’s limited but I can still go from one end of a map to the other without it stopping…towns clothes or not, one skill or not, is still a cosmetic mount.
I have no issue with mounts being in the game, im just saying we already have them in the game.
I use one all the time.
I’m just going to call BS on that. It is literally impossible to go from one side of the map to the other on the Broom without stopping. The broom will vanish before you make it to the other end. That is also counting that you are able to avoid every mob and even have a speed boost. It just isn’t possible to do with the limited time.
But by all means. Prove me wrong. Go to a place like Lornar’s Pass and film yourself riding the broom all the way from one end to the complete opposite end. Show me it is possible and then I’ll believe you.
And I’m sorry, but one skill on a brawling weapon is not a mount.
And yes, I have one too that I play with from time to time as well.
Edit: Just timed it myself. The broom skill last for exactly three minutes. Now please tell me exactly how you are going from one side of the map to the other in three minutes or less? Yeah…
And just tried it myself in Kessex Hills. Started at Delanian Waypoint (which wasn’t really close to the entrance, but it was the closest waypoint) and worked my way to the Halicon Waypoint. Made it about halfway before my broom vanished on me. So you can’t go from one end to the other, sorry.

Ha! Semantics, the best thing ever to argue about.
And yes, there a great chance that mounts will be add to the game.
Why?
Well like the Champion Grawl Shaman on the volcano fractal like to say:
-Our god(NCSOFT) demands sacrifice(money)!
I really, REALLY want mounted combat in this game. The mechanics are perfect for it. You can click a mount in the game world, or summon it from your inventory, which will then place you atop said mount. This will then change out your 1 to 5 weapon skills with special mount skills.
Imagine a dungeon path or a fractal that is done completely while mounted. Or even a PvP map where you choose a mount at the start, and then do the entire fight from your mount.
The broom is already a step in that direction, since it’s a costume brawl item, it already fulfills a function. I think mounted combat can go really well in this game.
As long as it works as fluidly as it does if you’re not mounted IE: the mount is like part of you. In Lotro the mounted combat is cool but I find it sluggish, hard to control turns etc and you have to invest mount traits just to turn your mount more effectively, meh.
Siege golens (and power-suit) are kind like a mount. Exept you go inside, instead of the top.
Its still a mount.
If you ride something.. its a mount. Doesnt matter if its fast, slow, flying or cosmetic. You cannot ride something and not class it as a mount !
Witch’s Broom from halloween = Cosmetic Mounts….
NO! No mounts! Can we all just stop talking about this?
Too much stubbornness here… I won’t class anything as a mount unless it’s permanent with a speed boost.

Dude one day there will be mounts, its to easy to monatize ((they could make more bank)) and there’s just to much call for it.
If implemented correctly (some GW2 kinda way) it will not brake your game and it will not make it less fun. Deal with it.

thats a really narrow minded way to look at things man. with way points being a thing what exactly would you gane by said speed boost.
At best it should only be a temp speed boost like that of the warhorn.

I own one, and it’s not a mount. Quit dreaming.
I’m still just walking but with a different animation.
A Norn should be able to equip a back item that would allow an Asura to sit in it. Then they can call themselves Master Blaster and run Bartertown.
Fojja – Vyxxi – Nymmra – Mymmra – Champion of Dwayna .. and more

Guild wars was not made for mounts. They’ve said this explicitly. Deal with it.
Break. You meant to say break.
Sooo just in case that they one day bring an flying elephant double size of a norn with a 15 min limit and no speed buff everyone will be happy, because thats not a mount at all. Good to know.
There’s magic technology in the game, why don’t we all just drive our magic Asura RDXs (see what I did there?) to the next waypoint? Hey, why not let the whole party ride, and cast spells and shoot arrows out the windows?!
Why not? …….
Why not? …….
Because it would be a pretty big eyesore.
Actually seige devourers were pretty sweet, but they were restricted within a three map area and you were almost just as well off outside of one than in one.
Same with the wurms that burrowed through the sulphur. Fun but more like a temporary skill than a legit mount since you couldn’t actually GO anywhere with it.
But as long as it’s not a mount.
You know the thing is, many people get mad if you only use the word “mount”, no matter how you call this broom thing, it does what mounts do. They are there you can sit on it and go around with it,. The only difference is that it has a very limited use. If people call it “a mount” so let them do it. Noone ever said, well this way it would be an ok way for mounts to be implemented, as long as they don’t break immersion to much (like a flying elephant prolly does^^).
But instead people are arguing about words. The thing must not be a mount, under no circumstances. Really I would like to see more options like this broom in the future. And if some call it a mount, who cares?
Well the broom is fine.
If people want to fool themselves and think they’re on a mount, then that’s fine too I guess.
It’s just that the game is not designed for PROPER mounts that make you go faster than on foot (the primary purpose for any mounted travel as well as carrying capacity.)
So it’s not really just arguing about words. A mount is one thing, and a cosmetic walking animation is a whole other thing.
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Junundu
That’s about the wurms. Those were super fun to farm the map in, but they were only good for the sulfurous areas that would kill you if you went in on foot.
