Was just reading through some of the posts and surprised at the amount of people attacking one another in a thread. Seems like no ones point is valid any more haha. Sorry for the off-topic discussion just want to see what other people think

Yes, the number of personal attacks can get ridiculous. Many people appear to take a great many opinions as personal affronts. Game forums are often like this, though. It takes a mature person to discuss their points of view without losing sight of their opponent’s.

The moderators do a good job keeping things relatively calm, especially compared to other forums out there where the hate flows like Greenland glacial melt. Once people here accept that I’m right and everyone agrees with me things will calm down even further.

Of course, that would be boring as all get out.

Rough? you’re joking right. This is one of the heaviest (possibly the most) moderated forums Ive ever been on. Moderators here are the rough ones…lol
People seem to mix conflicting opinions with personal attacks (as that other guy said)
Thats what forums are for, we want to be challenged and have our ideas contested. That way we feel like we are in a live, vibrant community.

I love this forum, even if Im not always Mr popular with some of the moderators

Whining/ personal attacks are fairly common place in an mmo forum. Not that that makes it good or acceptable but it is what it is.

Also this forum isn’t really that bad if you want to see a rough forum go to pretty much any other mmo forum or even better check out the LoL forums.

One big factor is that lots of players here are League of Legends players.

And the LoL forums have extremely minimal staff-moderation. So, people are free to tr_llololololololol to certain extents.

The typical gamer mentality does the rest. Always believing their wanted features should be done first, PvPers thinking anything that kills them is OP, etc., etc..

Sometimes they are rough, but the moderators take care of most of the rough stuff. I don’t mind people disagreeing in a civil manner, but I do mind personal attacks, and just downright insults which really don’t happen on these forums much without someone stepping in and straightening that out, that is why I frequent these forums often That’s why this is my game GW2, no more worries about excessive rudeness

Mods close/warn/ban for personal attacks. On the other hand, you can get a warning or a ban for even the most trivial posts…

I’ve received a warning for a post I made, which in no way I was clearly ‘attacking’ this guy, but telling him how his opinion of a certain quest is in no way related to a certain topic. So obviously the OP didn’t agree with my opinion and reported me. I do not troll or attack on this forum, as it’s very civil compared to most games. But you see much much worse on say… the League of Legends forums, yet the mods do not batter an eyelid.

But to you OP, the forums here are much more civilized, and good, decent discussion takes place.

Personal attacks usually occur when people run out of intellectual gas. It’s a sign of weakness in a line of argumentation. I find it’s best to focus on ideas rather than personalities. And, the forums here, because of active moderation, are still better than most out there.

I guess I should be dismayed that I find this forum to be rather tame, but then I’m used to game forums that are infested, to varying degrees, by the SA goons and their sycophants as well as all the other wanna-be trolls and the like not to mention the IRC servers I visit.

The only complaint I’ve had is the overly ham fisted nature of the mods (seriously folks lighten up a bit).

From what I see the people on these forums arnt a good representation of the people I play with in the game. I very rarely see people so upset on the level some of these guys are. I hear a lot of good feedback in game.

To be honest I’ve reported several posts in the past but no action was ever taken, no infractions given or the post removed/edited. Yet I’ve seen posts that are a lot less offensive or barely in breach of the code of conduct be removed or infracted so it’s a bit confusing when blatant insults/attacks on other forum members get ignored and the vaguest of code breaches gets swiftly punished. Unless there is some sort of backlog and/or some reports don’t make it through, I’m personally a bit confused….

actually they arent that bad and in fact before Nov 15 were very tame and respectful.

But I mean what do you expect? you hype the game for years around certain design choices and then thrown them under the bus in under 2 months. You loose the vast majority of you player population faster than tor.
Every decision that has been made has forced the player to the gem shop unless they are the chosen dungeon runners who have everything handed to them.
So colour me bad but what do you expect when you sell out throw out your founding principles and turn this into a grinder that the Koreans cant stand?
If all that sucks they then institute DR and loot table changes to force you to get gems or exploit your butt off to make money.
Play their way or be poor and have fun.
Dont like it no sir dont like it all.

Maybe like Bioware when it is all said and done they will look back and say you know what maybe we should have listened to what they wanted and held true to our design choices.
But when you take a great game and destroy it fast you expect roses? Your going to get flack and lots of it.

If my mom wrote it it would be a hell of a lot nastier believe me. I am tame compared to her tongue.

november’s patch started it all and every patch after that broke the community up even further ex: hardcore/casual/soloer/grouper/pvper/pveer/anti-vertical progression/anti-horizontal progression.. every single patch as manged to pit 2 or more of these fragments against each other causing hostile reactions and what we see on the forums 2day… in all my years of mmo i dnt think ive ever seen a forum community so divided and frustrated.

You should have been here when they threw the doors open OP. The first week and ahalf was pretty nice, actually…then the bullkitten started. There were so many moderated threads, the forum looked like a grey fungus had taken over.

If it was up to me, there’d be even more grey fungus to keep ahead of all those repeat-topics >:D
(If I wasn’t wasting enough time not-writing my Master Thesis, I’d volunteer to weed out the otherwise very nice Players-Helping-Players Forum )

I think the forum is actually a failed effort (in my personal opinion, etc and all).

For GW1, ArenaNet did not have an official forum. Rather, it used fansite forums, of varying quality, but there was no single great forum. There were some complaints about how “real games” had official forums, but anyway, the community managed.

Now, in GW2, we have an official forum. ArenaNet keeps an intense watch on this forum, in order to build a friendly environment in which people can talk about GW2.

That, however, has failed.

This is not a friendly community to discuss the game. Even despite all the effort and all the resources ArenaNet has invested here, the community cannot make anything other than hostile discussions in which one side is eager to antagonize the other. As someone has said somewhere else, “the real PvP is in the forum”, and that feels very much true here.

Is it worth the effort? Is it worth having community managers, the community special operations team, community coordinators, moderators, and etc, for this? I don’t think so.

Yeah for how polite the ppl in the game usually are, I was surprised by this.

But then I realized the people playing are probably actually playing, leaving the people complaining.

I would tell people I worked for Special Ops, ad nauseam, even after they found out it was for a game company.

I would ride that joke so hard if I had any kind of special ops in my job title. XD

it’s kinda sad what the forums, especially the general duscussion section, have become.

50% of the threads are about 1 minor thing the game did wrong in the opinion of the thread creator, which eventually results in a flame war against a-net.
especially when new content is added.

most recently: every second thread is about what a huge grinder GW2 is…i just can’t take such threads serious.
obviously, GW2 wasn’t a grinder 1 week ago…but now it is? :P

30% are just mindless flamewars towards anything or everything, but not always related to GW2 in any way.

10% of all threads are comparisons of GW2 to other games.
just go play that “compared to GW2”-game instead if love it so much. :P

5% are gamebreaking suggestions, usually posted outside of the suggestion section.

and last but least 5% serious talk.

no wonder that dev’s aren’t coming by here often.

I’d like to talk of some weird moderator actions too (but somewhat understandable of the current state of the forums), but sadly it’s not allowed here.

Maybe… but I’ve seen worse in my days of moderating for GameForge. Players of those browser games can sure be nasty.
It took me almost two month to completely reeducate the people that frequented my sections until they respected the rules.

The best official forum of a game I’ve seen so far is…

It’s an unreleased game and it’s really nice in there. Better keep it that way while we can.

Every post I made that was infracted seems to be a bit too hard on someone where it was just my severe brand of reason and logic to counter most of the inane whining and “Hate-Anet!” comments here. Yet I get a post deleted every time as it seems even remotely “disrespectful” to the other poster that is far worse than I’d ever be.

I guess logic is out the door. So I just don’t even join these arguments anymore.

I rather see them infracted for all the bad publicity and damage to the game that’s going on by them instead of my slightly snark filled and reasonable in nature comments. I should be more worried about the so called, “GW 2 minority” than little ol’ calm me. I know my last post that was infracted was a bit of edgy sarcasm, yet anyone could see how downhill the discussions have gotten, including the poster above me.

The constant hate on Anet and stuff going on is really demoralizing on me and others enjoying the game.

Once a new player to GW 2 takes a single look at this forum, they turn tail and run expecting the game’s players to be exactly like us here.

If any of this rhetoric gets me infracted and banned here, then I finally know where my allies are.

There are MMO forums out there which are much more toxic. It’s quite OK here most of the time :p

Something that extremely disturbs me, however, is the lack of the most basic grammar skills in almost every thread. It seems that over the last year or so many English speakers lost the ability to differentiate between there/they’re/their, to/too, your/you’re, then/than completely, and it’s getting worse by the day.
