Q:
Thief vs. Ranger?
I found ranger + pet to be very handy mapping and able to solo champs etc when needed (due to the pet) but its also a case of 300 hearts worth of longbow pew pew. Not a lot of variety there.
Thief i found harder due to the trash mobs being rather a pain to deal with. However the tradeoff is that you can use the stealth abilities to skip a huge amount of annoying mobs/fights while mapping and in orr you can cap some skillpoints etc that have champs permacamped on them.
PvP sadly i have no idea of the strengths/weaknesses.
Best class i’ve mapped with so far is war, the dps and survivability makes mapping in less than a week easily doable. (except that blasted blackgate eb keep)
Ranger in this game is the pet class. You hang out with bears and such and wreck faces.
Assasin-ohwaitimean- Thief is more about misdirection and trickery. Stealth, blinds, evasiveness, that kind of thing.
Both classes have a subforum on this website, but go in them with a huuuuge grain of salt, as they tend to be the most salty places on the internet. The userbase of this forum tends to really like complaining and every single person thinks their class is the most underpowered.
Ranger: Best open-world PvE class. Its what I did map complete on. They are in a (very) bad state for WvW all the way round, they are viable for tPvP if mostly cheese builds.
Thief: Everyone’s favorite thing to hate. Viable for solo to small scale WvW and tPvP. They are terrible in PvE and WvW zergs.
I hate my ranger, love my thief(sometimes). Really can’t say I’d recommend either, they both have limited scope of relative viability compared to other classes.
If you’re new make both and play which ever you like better, you can always level another character later. I should also say, ranger will be the easiest to level and get into the game due to the pet.
