<Removed – Do not make company call-outs ~ Dalmarus>

This game is all grind, all the content the promised will be memorable and fun is not there.

Crafting is a joke it’s either pay to win or it is a grind. Either way, you get top tier craft gear which completely replaces anything you get from dungeons and without the ridiculous prices of the dungeons.

Dungeons simply don’t give enough tokens to get the dungeon armor. I am not going to do 70 runs of the same dungeon to get a full set of cool armor. I am not going to waste my time doing that, I don’t have time to do that even if I wanted to. Arena has a very distorted definition of grind if they think this is acceptable.

Legendaries are only there for people who have enough time to sit on theirkitten all day and play this game. I have obligations that aren’t about getting redundant shinies.

Anything past 20 and all the sudden the areas are bare of any sort of dynamic events and the events that you do see are simple “defend this area from hordes of X” or “lower X moral”. Whatever happened to the huge branching events Arena? What happened to all the events that are supposed to be impactful? In Orr? Well I apologize if I don’t want to get to 80 to see all this content, that is what happened in WoW and every grindy MMO I have played. I thought that maybe this game will have enough fun content throughout the game to keep me playing, I thought that I would still be having fun after level 20. I crafted from 60-80 because I got terribly bored of the main game. I have yet to do a level 80 dungeon because I will get absolutely nothing out it besides Gold which is completely redundant because it can be purchased.

What happened to this game being for the people who don’t have time to play the game religiously? I thought you guys didn’t need to hold my attention through grind because you aren’t getting money from me monthly. What benefit do you get from me grinding out dungeons or legendaries?

sPvP is the only thing in this game that I feel they delivered on 100%.

It’s pretty clear the cash shop is meant as a major source of income, which means they need to keep us playing. That alone means we aren’t getting a game, we’re getting obligations.

And well, that’s only going to get worse, over time Anet will get better at making the experience lss enjoyable and more compelling.

And that means the grind is entirely optional and not needed to compete in anything other than pretty princess contests.

I am level 80 and have yet to grind a single thing. I see mats I don’t need for large amounts of money. These baseless threads coming from no where are strange, so are the posts about the blatant need for cash.

So if the game is all about aesthetics why do they make it such a godkittenchore to make yourself look pretty? Why would I bother? I’m all for an aesthetics based game but it makes no sense for me to care enough to do the same dungeon 70 times. Like I said, I don’t have time. I CAN’T play the game how they want me to.

What happened to this game being for the people who don’t have time to play the game religiously?

Might I ask what’s the problem with this?

I played for about 30hours so far (had a 3 day start) which comes down to an hour or two daily (in average) of playtime. Basically, I don’t play much, and I’m having a blast…

WHY do you have to do the grind that you so complain about?
BC, for me, there is no grind. I play the game to enjoy it, not to “work” at it. The fact is that you CHOSE to grind, ANet didn’t force you.

I’m not saying that the game is perfect (it’s still to early for it to be even near to perfect) but seriously people, you complain about the things that you DO, not what you’re HAVE to do (there is a difference).

I don’t get the OP either. I have had a lot of free time for once and been playing it like a madman and loving it. (other than some moments in WvW). I can do anything I feel like doing and gain cash, experience, karma, tokens, badges and trade any of those things in for more gears. I can also turn a couple of gold into gems and pick up gear. I have a Krytan armor set that cost me like 1g and have gotten plenty of transmute gems to keep my set all the way to 80 (when I hit 80).

You don’t have the time? Your problem.
You don’t want to grind? You don’t have to.
You want everything handed to you? Many of us don’t.

Legendary is just that…a toy for those who can and will put the time in to set themselves apart from the rest. I will have legendaries just to fulfill my vanity. I don’t HAVE to have them..but I want them.

This seems to be more than a baseless rant from someone who didn’t get everything handed to them.

IDK what game you guys are playing, but I am enjoying myself quite a bit. I am not finding it a grind at all. Do I have alot of money… no I don’t. Is that hampering my enjoyment of the game… not in the least. I have spent plenty of gold so far in different odds and ends. So the money is there, all depends on what you are willing to part with it for.

As far as grinding out dungeons.. no one said you had to do it. That is your choice. The game is ment for you to explore every bit of Tyria and then go play WvW or PvP. Or you can just jump right in to WvW and PvP from lvl 1. The days of grinding stuff to be able to take down that boss to get the new shiny so you can grind down another boss to get the gear to grind down the next boss is over.

Any grind you do is by choice. So many ways to level up. The game gives you XP of every little thing. Yellows drop at a good rate. (least for me they have). The only people that have been having issues (that I have noticed) is those that rush to level 80. End game starts at level 1 …not 80.

This is not last decades MMORPG. And I am glad for that. Does the game have a few issues… sure what MMO in the first 3 weeks from launch dosent? In my expirence, this launch has been the smoothest launch for any MMO I have seen. I have been there for quite a few of them.

it all comes down to: do you think the prettyness of the dungeon armor and legendary weapons justify grinding to you? If yes, then go grind. If no, find something else. For me personally, I want a legendary weapon, but I’ve set that as Long Long Term goal. As in: I’m just going to keep playing and eventually I’ll have the money without having to grind anything. I’ll expect to have one in a year, maybe two. Same with dungeon armor. I want one, and sometimes I’ll do a dungeon run with my guildies, but I’m not rushing. Maybe a few runs a week or so. I’ll expect to have my first dungeon set in a year. In the meantime, I’m going to do other stuff. Collect minipets using only ingame gold. 100% map completion. Mastering WvW. Start an alt. Help guildies with their goals. I don’t expect to be bored anytime soon, but I’m not rushing anything either.

One of the main problems I have here is that yeah, it’s a pretty princess simulator, but the only way to get your pretty princess gear is in explorable dungeons. Which are explicitly supposed to only be for the most hardcore of hardcore players, for whatever reason. So where does that leave everyone else? I don’t really want to beat my head into a wall trying to do a bunch of super frustrating dungeons, but I have no other way to get neat stuff.

In Guild Wars 1, if I wanted cool armor sets I could do a number of things to get money, which is really all you needed. You weren’t limited to doing only the hardest of the hard content that only a small fraction of players can tolerate/complete. So I’m kind of at a loss of what to do at this point. I’ve already got the cash for my ugly crafted exotics. What now?

Also, sup goon.

/sarcasm

No, by all means, do go for it, as it clearly is making you comfortable/happy.

/end sarcasm

Are you serious? If something is a grind, and I’m not liking it, you can bet anything in the world that I won’t be doing it. Who cares about a legendary if the process of getting it is making you unhappy/disappointed or whatever?

The main goal of the game is to have fun. That’s why we all bought it. Playing the game that is not considered fun makes absolutely no sense.

With that, you have a choice. Either continue grinding and complain how it sucks, or play what you find fun. You even said that you enjoy PvP. There is no grind in PvP… why don’t you play that then?

i think i agree on one aspect… in other mmos can run a dungeon and get a new peice of armor you can use, in GW2 you have to do that run a few times to afford a single part. I mean in DCUO i can get new armor graphics from almost every run of any area or dungeon, heck even just out in the overworld idea of grinding dungeons for the armor is bad… i think better way to do it is simply drop a token lets you get 1 armor part, still gonna require about 7 or 8 runs depending on how much armor they have a which is plenty in grand scheme of things.

They delivered the nicest ever world i’ve seen created in a MMO minus the end game area Orr, they did something different having WvW. The grind is still there, even if for cosmetic it’s there, and at a fairly hardcore level.

Also I have noticed… why do most gamers today (the ME generation) think just because they bought a game they are entitled to have everything NOW, and they want it without having to work for it?

Heaven forbid they have to put in effort for that new shiny skin. How blasphemous!

Seriously folks… the self ritiousness of this new breed of gamers is pathetic. “Give it to me now!” attitude sounds nothing more than a child having a temper tantrum. According to these people, the devs must change all aspects of the game to suit their wants and desires. Can’t these people see how utterly ridiculous this is?

Maybe at 38, I am just too old to get it. the way I was brought up is nothing is free, if you want it you have to earn it. Same goes for video games. If you want the stuff in game you have to work for it. Plain and simple.

Guild Wars has always been a pretty princess simulator. Those dungeon sets are for looks. And looks are the only thing Anet makes a grind for. Yeah that’s true and I’m okay with that. I’m not okay with how much worse they made the grind compared to the grind required to get the “top tiered looking” armor in GW.

It required money, or you could farm the mats. Mats you could only get one way by farming (but it wasn’t a boring farm). Money you could get in many ways. This game? You have to do a certain dungeon, sure they have 3 paths but that only goes so far. You don’t get the tokens as drops, you get them after boss battles, a stagnant amount, always. I can do that 5 times, then I get bored. Why would they change the process? It worked beautifully in Guild Wars…why go backwards for this game?

There’s a simple fix for it, make the tokens a random drop in the dungeons on top of the tokens you get after a boss battle. So you know, instead of getting 25-30 per run, you could go in there and come out with maybe 40 or even 60. Knowing you could get a larger amount would make it a bit more fun to do..or at least keep the drive going.

Or they could make them tradeable but I’m sure everyone would hate that..then everyone would have the armor and people wouldn’t be snowflakes anymore.

If you like the look of some gear then put the time into getting it.I’d sure as hell bekitten if people like you had the good gear i like just handed to you. Go buy the gem shop gear skins. cost’s a little in game gold converted to gems or you could always except you are not getting the gear you like because you haven’t put the time in. your problem is your word “meaningful reward” exotic gear is the only “meaningful reward”, after you are all exotic, from crafting or w/e, grats, you are now done.

from there on you have the choice of either working towards getting gear you like the look of, playing WvW, getting 100% complete or mindlessly gathering. (sPvP you had the choice to do at level 1, so im not counting it)
if it’s grindy for you to do dungeons, then YES you should ignore it, if you REALLY REALLY need that style gear, then you just need to choose how much you need it, and how grindy it feels.

slow down maybe? game only just came out, you have years to get the prettiest items.

It’s not about ignoring meaningful content. It’s about how you want to play the game. There are some high level items that need a certain amount of grind. One can discuss about if the grind is too many, too dull, too stupid or whatever. But I mean basically it works the same as in other MMOs: You trade in time for an awesome item. It was the same in GW1 most of the time, by the way. If this is the game you want to play, you do it. If you don’t want to, I mean there is lots of other stuff to do, isn’t there? If NONE of the content fits your playing style, GW2 is simply the wrong game. And also, getting one of those items can be a long-term goal, as mentioned before. Then you can change up doing dungeons with doing other stuff. And if one of your guildies just got to the dungeon for the first time, you do it with him :-) Tosha Daydreamer said it pretty well I guess:

For me personally, I want a legendary weapon, but I’ve set that as Long Long Term goal. As in: I’m just going to keep playing and eventually I’ll have the money without having to grind anything. This is how I feel too. Aesthetics are great, but not a compelling reason to do content. Nor something that should be backloaded into endgame. More of something to enjoy on the side, along the way.

This is nothing new, though. I felt ANet was always pretty clear about the issue. I’ve just always disagreed with them. I’m enjoying the game in spite of that. For now. It just won’t keep me playing longterm.

I never really liked gear-grinding of any sort, though. I’m an old DAOC vet, not a WoW player.

It’s not very meaningful if you don’t even want to put the effort to get it.
You just sound like you want everything handed to you right away.
I don’t understand how can you even expect that you should have one of these armor less than a month after the game released.

I bought a cultural armor on my sylvari not long ago. When the game released, it was something I thought I would maybe be able to afford in a few months. but a few days was enough.

This game really already make everything super easy. So I’m glad that some things take a little more time. Even if it actually should be even harder to get. I was expecting to play GW2 for a few years, not only a few weeks.

OP. You make no sense. You don’t even have a valid argument.

I could give you the skin of a legendary weapon at level 1. You could transmute the look all the way to 80. Would it be enough? I doubt it. Because it wasn’t legendary. It only looks like it.

If it was so easy to get, it wouldn’t be a “meaningful” reward then. It would just be another green item sitting around collecting dust or scrapped down.

There’s plenty of cool looking things. There’s multiple ways of completing any event. There’s a lot of chained events. You can choose how you go about your stories.

I think you need to go back to WoW where you can get maxed out level fast and spend a couple of weeks picking up new pieces of gear and go get top tier gear in a month. Then you look around you at the other 5 million people that have the same gear as you and feel special.

I, on the other hand, will spend my time having fun and eventually getting to the top level of loots.

The problem Haishao is they make the things that take a little more time to get, not fun to get. In Guild Wars, it was fun to get those things that take a little more time. They knew how they set it up in Guild Wars, so why did they do something totally different in this game? Something that follows what many MMO’s do. They did it right with Guild Wars, why change it?

I love the people who hop on the bandwagon saying that anyone who doesn’t want to do the same dungeons hundreds of times wants all their stuff for free. I don’t want things handed to me I just don’t feel like I should pour hundreds of hours to get a simple set of dungeon gear. that is all.

It’s a weird setup for anyone who is not familiar with the Guild Wars franchise. For those that are, it’s not news in the slightest. Again, the only grind in this game is for aesthetics. And that means the grind is entirely optional and not needed to compete in anything other than pretty princess contests.

Beeing optional doesn’t make things better.
GW2 treats items like any other MMORPG, except that you won’t get better stats but a nicer and/or rarer look.
So if GW2 uses gear as carrot on a stick like other games, what is the purpose of delimiting from other games solely by the grind intensity?
Why are dungeons only rewarding if you focus on one of them and grind for weeks?

It could be so easy: One additional exotic set of gear obtainable through a common dungeon currency. It wouldn’t be as rare as the current dungeons sets, but it would be a reward for people who like to play a dungeon only once or twice.
It simply would be a less grindy reward for people with a more common playstyle.
And I can’t imagine that this would hurt anybody.

It would be optional…

And people disagree with that sentiment. Neither one of you is right or wrong. You have different game and design philosophies, and neither of you should really give akittenwhat the other thinks. You’re independent effing people, for Christ’s sake.

Exactly Goose. They should have made this the same as they did in Guild Wars. The amount of times you needed to run FoW to get Obsidian armor wasn’t a stagnant number, it could be 20 times, it could be 50, it could be 15.

But in this game, it is a stagnant number. It shouldn’t be. I don’t want to have to run a dungeon 70 times, all the time to get the armor. I want a chance to have to run it 45 times or only 50 times..because the tokens drop off mobs. I just don’t understand why they didn’t design it that way..that’s the way they did it in Guild Wars and it was fun. This isn’t. Why change something that works well?

I mean you guys played Guild Wars right? You know it wasn’t as bad as this and I’m sure some of you even found it fun to get the certain armors. Why make it so much harder in this game? Why take the randomness out of it all?

The game has been out, what – a month now? And you’re complaining that you’ve got to grind for your awesome haxor armor? Guy, slow down and play the game … enjoy the game, you’re not paying a monthly subscription fee so there is no reason to rush to the end – NONE.

Take the time to smell the landscape, look at the great vistas, explore, talk to npcs, maybe even roleplay with some of your other gamers – have … shhhhh … wait for it …. “fun”. I know it’s been a long time since a game has encouraged fun over grind, but it’s something you’ll need to wrap your head around. The first expansion probably won’t be out for six months or so if it follows GW1’s schedule, so now that you’ve hit the “BIG O” of lvl 80, make another character who you can just chillax with.

Jump on my server, I’ll roleplay with ya, guy – we’ll have a good time and we won’t grind once … we might not even see a dynamic event … heck, we might not leave the city.

I get it, you’re stuck in WoW-mind, or somethin’ and you’ve got to nurse yourself out of it … it’ll take time, but you can do it.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

I still think 50 times is way too much. that is still 50 hours to get one set of armor you may only like for a week.

and that is if you complete each run in an hour.

Also I have noticed… why do most gamers today (the ME generation) think just because they bought a game they are entitled to have everything NOW, and they want it without having to work for it?

Because they are the same people that use cheats in single player games (and multiplayer too, if they can).

I got to 80 in about 1 week, 35 hours played roughly around 4 to 5 hours a day. Currently, my ranger only has one orange item (the leggings) and everything else that I have equipped on me are either blue, green, or yellow.
Although it might be true that it might take hours and hours of grinding to actually get legendary items, I find myself having fun even without a full set of oranges or yellows or whatever seems to “make my character super overpowered.” I see no point in trying to get these items when Anet brings you down to the area level limits where you free kill things and get the same amount of experience all around.
If you really want items that can help you out, try exploring and getting 100% clears on higher level maps. It gives you decent amount of coin and decent items (unlucky for me couldn’t get many medium armor equips.)
As a casual player myself, I can not complain about the lack of legendary items I can get. Afterall, I am a casual player just trying to kill time at the end of the day. If I really wanted to get legendary items, Its just going to take me a long time. Nothing else to it.
Btw, Anet. This is a great game.

Those things are designed to be difficult to get; and thus they are difficult to get. Look at the legendary weapons – it generally requires dedication from multiple people, or even guilds to put together. Then because it is difficult to get, people will then try to get it in order to show off since not too many other can manage it. It’s like the Mt. Everest of the game.

Then don’t. How hard is that?

If you wanna get your gear fast, then you can choose to grind it. If not, then you can run a dungeon once a week and get it in a year.

Don’t do it if you don’t want to do it. Easy choice.

Move along people.

No game is gonna live up to all its promises exactly. Sometimes those promises just dont work perfectly in the real world after trial. It is quite easy to get upset about all the bugs and insufficiences right now , but think about down the line when nearly all the annoyances are ironed out. Thats the game they advertised and thats the game im looking forward to. I can put up with 6 months of the game in its current state, and by then they will have fixed many many things. Maybe not everyone can, but look at the features they have added in just these first small updates… the TP works great, the massive supply of some items has decreased ( softwood logs anyone?), you can now discover from your collections tab and more. Yea they have undoubtedly screwed up on some things and subsequently fixed some of them. This is an ongoing process, dont give into your emotions, think about this in a logical way and enjoy your self.

It’s all optional. If you want to grind a instance to look cool then it’s up to you. Remember it only turns into a grind if you let it. Nobody says you have to do it all at once. As it’s all cosmetic you don’t need any of it to do any other content. So it’s up to you if you want to grind each dungeon 3 times a day or 3 times a month.

Dunno. FoW and Vabbi armor weren’t something you could get in the first month after game releases.
Dungeons armor are basically that. Just that now there are more than only 2.

Yeah I know you couldn’t get them that fast, I’m not asking for these to be gotten right away. What I said was it was a lot more fun to do the grind required to get the FoW and Vabbi armor than it is to get the armor in this game. Not to mention the different ways you could acquire them, either farming the mats for them or getting the money required and the different ways to do that. In this game, you get one way to get those armors. Just one. That seems like Anet is taking a step backwards and going in the footsteps of other MMO’s rather than trying to stand out from them.

Why would they change the way they did it in the original Guild Wars? It worked there, and worked pretty well.

So you dont want to run a dungeon 70 times, then what do you want? you only want to run it 30 times before you get everything you want? how about 10 times? how about just once? how about none at all, and upon getting to 80 Anet mails you a full legendary set? do you want it to be a random drop?

Anytime gear is hard to get or has such a random chance to drop, the best thing you can do is stop thinking about it all the time. Focus on having fun while at the same time incrementally earning currency so you can buy your gear eventually. Unless of course the only reason you want that gear now now now is so you can be the first to have it as you AFK at the LA portals.
