The purpose of this thread is to see what YOU would want in an optional monthly paid VIP subscription IF it was offered to players.
Post your constuctive VIP sub model ideas, not your personal dislikes of the VIP sub idea in general.
Go…
Edit- This thread is not to post your approval or disproval of a VIP model, it’s to share what you would want IF it were going to happen. I’m not asking if you like it or not. It’s a “what if?” thing.
(edited by Swagger.1459)
what would be the gains of this subscription?
For $5 a month:
1. Get 200 gems a month?
2. No waypoint costs
3. Free character slot.
4. Free lv80 boost.
Just a quick thought, not sure if I’d agree with these in a week or two. But I was trying to think of simple things that wouldn’t completely make it a p2w model. (not 100% sold on the gem part)
what would be the gains of this subscription?
That’s for you to imagine. If you had to be in charge of giving this to players what would it look like? or… What would entice you to pay a monthly sub fee?
(edited by Swagger.1459)
I like Riku’s no waypoint costs idea.
Along those lines another idea might be no cost to transmute skins.

Pretty much this.
I think that the Character Slot/Lv80 Booster should be once a year, but the rest should be a Monthly reoccurring with every VIP RE-UP.
But add on the following;
Instant Bank Access
No Armor Damage
15% off Trading Post Listing Costs
10 Pack of Black Lion Trader and Vendor
In short, it has to be useful for a VIP Sub to make sense.
I like Riku’s no waypoint costs idea.

No, if the VIPs are getting BL Skins then that will flood the market and make them pretty worthless. It cant hurt the economy, and cant put the game into a Pay2Win model.
It should be a ‘Convenience pack’ like thing.
One of the selling points for me for this series, has always been the lack of a subscription fee. Even one as innocent as each month you get free Waypoint costs and a small amount of gems would not go over well with me as it would create the psychological need to play the game. One of the great things about this game is how easy it is to breaks. The playerbase even encourages it for when players become burned out or bored but to come back when the next Patch, LS, etc. etc. comes out. A subscription fee would be counter to that healthy culture.
Why keep bringing this up? You want to give the company x amount of money each month go for it. The only thing I can see of benefit is that a certain subset of the pop can say they are very important and have the company agree with it. I would be gone if they introduced it so not a huge issue.
The character slot and lv80 scroll in my mind would be only once.
To follow up on SirSquishy, I think they could call it “Black Lion Trading Company VIP access” or something along those lines.
Then add simple things related to our beloved monopoly.
Cheaper/ free transmutation charges, a small deduction in trading post fees for posting an item.
Things like that.

yes pretty much.
I do not really see any benefit for a VIP sub outside of the Gold sink stuff we currently mitigate.
But for 5USD/Month, 200 gems + Gold Sink Removals (or just discounts) could be interesting. And then add on a few convenience items (Bank access, Vendor Access, and BLTP access for the duration of the VIP) it becomes a bit more then just interesting for me.
But the ‘No Item damage on Death’ is kinda important, as repairs can be annoying to deal with when you are doing Raids and learning new content and you run out of the cans.
If you guys really feel a need to pay a subscription, you can always just buy 800 gems each month, or once every 2 months, and get most of what you’re listing….
I mean, trade some of the gems to gold and you get the free waypoints/reduced TP costs.
If you want the bank access/etc. you could buy those too.
There is literally no reason to go subscription model to get these things.
Edit: To contribute, how about some sort of fancy title that gets fancier the longer you’re subscribed. No gameplay advantage for doing it, but it’d be something you can only get by subbing.
Edit2: Title could be like ‘Part of a Crowd; for month 1, then in month 2 it changes to ’Crowd Controller’, and in month 5+ it changes to ‘Crowd Control Warrior’.

You’d want to stay away from things like repair fees. I can see elitists say you need to be VIP to join the group. Just so they don’t have to wait 10seconds to have you repair.

I DO pay an optional subscription in the form of $15 and $25 gem cards.
Since I bought this game last year for $10, I’ve spent $160 in gem cards.
If any form of paid subscription is offered, I will quit playing.
I would pay $8-15/month for something like PSO2 has – extra bank slots that you can store items in while subbed and can still take items out of them when your sub is gone, but cannot keep depositing stuff into them after you lose your sub.
Also a key ring for all your keys you can access on any character!
As well as a few other bonuses that are just nice to have, not sure what GW2 could give as well, but more bank space would be great.
(edited by Shiyo.3578)
It would need to be asked if a VIP subscription would do more harm than good. People already argue that the game is p2w. This would add even more to that argument. True or not, a perception that the game is p2w would be a consideration for people thinking of starting the game and could reduce the numbers of new players, causing more reduction in profit than a gain from this feature.

As for myself, I have multiple black lion skins. I’m not even sure how many but they are easy to get.

Key ring would be a very slippery thing to start getting into. A common tactic of crappy F2P games is to stick pay walls all over the place(I have no problem with businesses making money, that is how they can continue existing but plobbing down obstacles everywhere until you pay is not the way to go). What would GW2 gain from turning into yet another bad F2P game? That market is already very crowded. Probably more crowded than GW2’s existing market.

I really really really dislike the idea of a ViP sub base system being introduced to the game. We have a gem store, if you want to help out the sales buy something there. I’m saying this because a discussion like it’s going to happen shows potential positives without negatives. To have a think tank you need to examine and research both/all sides of the issue not just the positive sides or what YOU want.
The only things I would see working okish for a sub system are..
exp boost
way point cost reduction (reduction not removal)
magic find boost
gold find boost

2. a “VIP” hairstylist" that is no cost for change hair styles and color-unlimited
3. no waypoint costs
4. a amount of Gems equal to sub price

6. If player Housing was EVER introduced- These items would be located in your Housing for conveniance

Why would you get ALL the benefits of being a “ViP” and the same amount of gems as the sub costs? (just curious)
Idea 1 would be super nice, but at the same time, could be costly for A-net, free trans for armor is pretty large.
Idea 2 there is a hair kit in game that offers this exact same thing with unlimited uses. Kinda unfair for those that got the hair kit.
3 and 5 I do like, as long as you mean a subscriber would get a discount on purchases of expansions and such.
actually some minor discount 10-15% from gem store purchases would be a decent thing for a vip

So on one month all the VIPs would get the Timekeeper Shield skin as account bound, and that somehow floods the market? Each YEAR the VIPs would get a total of 12 skins that they can’t sell, when how many new BL skins are introduced each year?
Feel free to stand by that statement all you want, but you’ll be standing there alone.

I’d uninstall the accounts from all 3 family members. It’d be time to look at a new company. Changing the basis of the model, even if only optional is silly and goes against the core philosophy the company based the game on.
If you want a monthly subscription … Buy gems, when you want. If you want to contribute more to the company, buy merchandise. Most ‘conveniences’ are already based on gem purchases, and are already optional.
When I like something they make, then I’ll pull out the ol credit card willingly and pick up gems. And if I’m buying gems, I’d usually want the best bang for the buck so I get the 4000 gem pack.
Is this post supposed to be targeted at people without credit cards or something?
One time bonus of free character slot and lvl 80 boost
No wp charge
Unlimited Transmutations
Unlimited Makeovers
Mini version of all my characters
Ability to use Jedi powers to influence Anet to make more armor sets
I don’t pay subscriptions to play games that I already payed $50 to $100 for so I say no to subscriptions, it’s one of the things I really like about GW and GW2 …. no subscriptions.

This thread is just a big hypothetical discussion… nothin’ more. A bunch of ‘what ifs’ and other mental exercises. Like so many threads in these forums.

Good topic, I had an idea for something like this for a while but never got around to posting it.
I’d pay $15 a month for permanent access to:
- Makeover kits and transmutation charges
- Personal banking, merchant and TP
I suppose it wouldn’t be fair to have completely unlimited access to these, so I’d propose a system where you can withdraw one of each item daily per account, except transmutation charges. Those should come in stacks of 10.
And of course, to stop people from ‘gaming’ the system by subbing for a month, collecting the goodies and then dropping, you’d have to pay for for at least one full year up front.
Get get as many as you can use of the boosters. By this I mean you can pop a booster, and once its expired, you can get another at no cost. Same for one time use merchants, revive orbs, repair canisters. Etc. X amount of T charges a month. Something like that. I feel that would feel VIP. Anything more than this could end up hurting ANets bottom line.
Not that I think this game needs something like this. You want a sub, jut buy gems every month. Job done.
I like Riku’s no waypoint costs idea.

You can spot a legendary from far away. To see my black lion pistols you’ll need to get right up to me and check. When one set is visible from a distance and the other set needs you to go right up to the person and examine him, then it’s going to look like the flamboyant one is more common because you can see it everywhere you go.
The other thing is status. If someone has one 3000 gold skin and ten 70 gold black lion skins which one do you think they will be showing off? It will be the 3000 gold skin. The others are sitting in the wardrobe. In this case, being unused because unwanted is not the same as rarity. I would bet a lot of people have bought black lion skins that are now sitting in wardrobes unused. I know I have multiples that I bought, used, then exchanged for something else later.
Third. Check the sales of black lion skins. If 20 or so are sold each day for each one versus a couple for any Legendary then they can’t possibly be rarer. Here are the last 24 hours for one set of skins, Balthazar. Check buy and sell: Balthazar’s skins
I like Riku’s no waypoint costs idea.

As a subscription reward, that’s worth quite a bit. I’d even go so far as to say just give a free Black Lion Ticket per month. But that’s because I don’t give a whit about the rare items market, especially for items that are purely RNG cash grabs.
That bitterness aside, I could also see ANet going for a couple of bundle items or a membership-club style of pricing. Think Costco or Sam’s, but with gems. Gnashblade’s Club? Gnashco?
On top of the usual value of the subscription price (800 gems per month on a $10 sub), give ‘warehouse’ pricing on gem store items, above and beyond the usual. 20% off all items and bundles (but obviously not gem→gold conversions), keys dramatically reduced to 25 gems each. Our real-life cash goes further, and ANet gets gem-cash infusions.
Or perhaps the Executive Satchel, a shared-bag with items that can’t be removed, accessible to all characters on the account.
Or maybe a Black Lion Revival Contract
Once per two hours (in-game day), if the character is defeated, it spawns a rescue group of NPCs to fight off mobs and revive the character. (Tongue-in-cheek nod to Shadowrun intended.)
Okay – hypothetical.
Convenience items I would consider paying a VIP sub for
1.) 4-5 shared inventory slots for characters – where I’d equip the gem store harvesting tools, a perma bank access and bl salvage, etc
2.) Free waypoints, across all the game, both core + HoT
3.) Ability to change character name without paying 800 gems
4.) Ability to change character hair style, face, race – aesthetic features (will never happen, how would you account for an asura story line on a charr character)
5.) Open access to beta incoming content (example… if they are finishing up Ring of Fire, or whatever that island is called) we’d get open access to open beta events pre-release.
I’d pay for convenience, as I work full time and raise a family who loves this game. I’d pay for convenience. Currently to get all the above it would cost me roughly 8000 gems per account, for 1 name change, 1 self style kit, way points would still cost me, and I’d get no access to beta’s.
Not that I think this game needs something like this. You want a sub, jut buy gems every month. Job done.
Naw, that doesn’t address the issue.
Imo, the best implementation of a sub at this point in the game should be one that encourages players who’re willing to spend real money on conveniences to do so by offering better value for it.

See, that is the thing.
This is the only game that I know of that does gold (in game, no monetary value) against “real” cash
Games like SWTOR is driven off cash, with a sub and “cartel” coins-that are paid in cash. The ecomomy is driven by cash and “credits” are worthless.—its one of the small problems with this game with all the inflation that happens when people discover a new “gold farm” that there is a in-balance of gold/money
Imo, the best implementation of a sub at this point in the game should be one that encourages players who’re willing to spend real money on conveniences to do so by offering better value for it.
But some of what you are asking for… 10xtrans charges a day how much money would that be? 1 total make over kit per day, again that’s a large cost… How much are you suggesting this cost to balance that out?
The key to making something like this realistic is to remember Convenience =/= Luxury; they are similar but not the same thing.
Actually would not be a bad idea to have the option to buy x gems each month as a sort of subscription.
Anything other than that I don’t think there should be anything available that’s not already in the gemstore anyway.
Free waypoints make the already limited waypoint cost reduce in the guild hall system even more limited in its use. So I would pretty much say a big NO to that.
One of the selling points for me for this series, has always been the lack of a subscription fee. Even one as innocent as each month you get free Waypoint costs and a small amount of gems would not go over well with me as it would create the psychological need to play the game. I feel the same way. This is why I finally gave up on World of Warcraft, and only bought Elder Scrolls Online when they cut out the subscription model (now a subscription is an optional choice, and gives you some benefits like the OP’s theorized “VIP” model). If I have to pay money in order to play for a month at a time, then I had better have the time and energy/motivation in order to play the game often enough each month to make the loss of real money feel justified/worth it. What happened to me with WoW was, not only was the game changing in ways I didn’t approve of, but I also was getting into university, so I had less free time. Now that I am working full-time, I really don’t have the time to play for hours each day. This is also why I haven’t used Xbox Live Gold or other subscriptions like that in years.
I wouldn’t want them to implement this. It’s bad enough when some players think they’re above P4F players, for them to become VIPs as well..
This would only be acceptable if gw2 was a free to play game by design, but it isn’t. This game series started on the premise of a no-subscription business model. In addition, I paid for my product, It is unfair then to ask me to pay more for for a service that gives paying players an in-game advantage over me, because it both gives them gold(gems to gold) and no waypoint cost, both of which give them an economic advantage.
This is a terrible idea, and would be a scumbag move by anet to make money instead of making quality content
As a Black Lion Company Stakeholder (which is what the subscription would have to be called), I’d expect the following:
1. Unlimited Transmutations
2. Unlimited Name Changes (with cooldown, if appropriate)
3. Unlimited Makeovers
4. Monthly Bundle of Black Lion Keys
5. 10% discount on gem purchases
That said, subscriptions do not belong here.
I would pay $8-15/month for something like PSO2 has – extra bank slots that you can store items in while subbed and can still take items out of them when your sub is gone, but cannot keep depositing stuff into them after you lose your sub.

What would GW2 gain from turning into yet another bad F2P game? That market is already very crowded. Probably more crowded than GW2’s existing market.
You can buy storage in PSO2 too, but this gives you extra storage on top of that so instead of paying $10 per slot you get like 6 storage expanders for $15/month or whatever.
My oh my, the reactions people have to theory crafting.
~ if it happens I’m leaving the game for good.~
Hehe. I thought it was obvious this was meant for optional, no advantage based system. Just because there is an optional sub fee doesn’t mean it’s bad and the game is garbage now.
And I’m sure if a 100% optional fee with no advantage to someone who has it was instead called “BLTC Loot Box” or something. Not a soul would complain. The stigma of sub fee is so strong.
If I want to support the company I should optionally buy $10+ worth of gems? What if I only want to spend $5? How is it any different if 15% of the player base optionally buys gems, or optionally buys a VIP service?
For myself, I’ve already spend over $1000 in gems, and I wouldn’t mind an optional $5 fee, or kitten gem option that I could choose to pay monthly.
As for my main idea. Nay to the 200 gems, 50% reduction of WP costs instead of 100%.
Just my two cents.
