Thinking about buying legendary precursor
Only you can determine how much your time is worth, whether said time is spent playing the game, or earning the cash.
Good luck.
its not worth it at all imo. just get ascended and enjoy playing. now if after your full ascended and done everything and are bored? then you might consider making them.
Given that you already have everything else – Currently, the gem prices are so low (On gem->gold), the precursor’s more affordable than it’s ever been before.

You seem to have missed the part where he has everything else established. He’s already decided “I’m making a legendary weapon”.
I find having a legendary is much more worth it than having an ascended weapon. Many people dont realize that ascended weapons have prefixed stats and your stuck with those stats. You can change the stats on legendary weapons at any time while out of combat. The change might not be much, but its still better than being stuck with prefixed stats as well as cosmetic stuff. Is there anyone that has fully completed the collection and crafted the precursor? Roughly how long did it take you?
I’d save up for your precursor instead. If you have only 100g to spend, put your buy order today for 100g. When you get another 50g, drop your order and create a new one for 150g. And keep doing that until your offer is as high as you’re willing to pay.
As long as you’re not too greedy in your price, you’ll eventually get your precursor from the TP. You’ll also remove the temptation for spending your savings on other shinies, by “hiding” it in your offer. Plus, you’ll spend less time worrying about it.
If you converted at the moment I’m typing, you’d need US$50 to get 1,000 gold — that seems like a lot to drop on a single item. On the other hand, people happily spend 10-40 bucks/month on gliders and finishers and so on, so there’s plenty of precedent.
Comparing options:
- Convert US$50 to 1,000 gems tonight. Pro: legendary this weekend; Con: buh buh 50 bucks!
- Put away 15 gold/week to spend on the precursor. Pro: easily afforded via dailies. Con: a year and a quarter! That’s a long wait.
- Aim to reserve 50 gold per week. Pro: only 20 weeks, less than you spent on other things probably. Con: still 20 weeks.
- Convert US$20 tonight and reserve 50 gold per week. Pro: down to 12 weeks and only $US20, less than a monthly subscription to some other game.
tl;dr As Inculpatus cedo says, only you can determine the value of your time. Consider mixing strategies, so your wallet isn’t lighter by that much and you don’t have to wait or grind for too long.
PS this weekend should be a great time to spend cash on gems→gold. The rate is already high and tonight’s WvW server linkages will probably bump it some more.

Thanks, this was really helpful. I might do a mix of what you said. Maybe save up some gold, set a max limit on how much gold I should get per week and if needed buy gold. I find that orders for precursors fulfilled within the 800 – 1000 gold range get fulfilled within a week or two. Anything below 800 will take a while, but it will eventually get fulfilled. Its hard to predict the trading post sometimes, but I find saving up gold much more easier than crafting. There’s a bunch of ways to make gold so it doesn’t feel like a grind.
I’ve been trying to get the precursor for about two years and its been difficult to get one. I find crafting a precursor extremely time consuming. The precursor is the last thing I need to get my legendary weapon, twilight. I’m thinking about buying it with real money via a gem conversion to gold. Its about 1000 gold now. I was just wondering if its worth buying over spending the time to make it
With the current conversion rates, Dusk would cost you about 50-60 bucks.
It’s up to you if you think that’s worth it. I sometimes spend real money on gems to convert it to gold if I just happen to be ~100g short on finishing my legendary, but I never dropped 50-60 irl bucks on a precursor, that’s a little bit too extreme for me.

I disagree there. With the amount of gold it costs to craft a legendary, you can craft about 16 ascended weapons for the same price. While the legendary might look way cooler (which is the reason I craft them) and while 1 legendary might take up less inventory space than 16 ascended weapons, you have to realize that you’re still going to be limited to 2 sigils on your legendary weapon (unless you don’t mind buying new sigils all the time). Swappable stats are useless when you can’t also swap the sigils.
I rather have 16 weapons with the stat+sigil combos that I want/need than 1 weapon with swappable stats but not swappable sigils.

To each their own. Some people will prefer the 16 weapons, others will prefer the legendary. I prefer the legendary cause its more convenient for me even though it can take a while to get. Sigils also aren’t very expensive so they’re easy to buy, but changing them all the time can be expensive. Also you can swap sigils on legendaries, they aren’t permanent.
