Hey all, I am thinking of returning to GW2 after a long break to real life stuff and other MMO’s (FFXIV, Tera and Wildstar).

One thing those 3 have that GW2 doesn’t have is trinity, and that will always be my main gripe with Guild Wars 2 That said, I think I like GW2 more than those games over all.

Anyway, on to my main question. Is Zerk gear still king? The 2nd thing that really bugged me in GW2 was the lack of viable build options. If you didn’t run Zerk then you were hurting your party more than helping. Has this been changed at all? How are the utility and support roles and have the dungeon mechanics changed at all to require these roles?

zerk is still highest damage/highest risk stat spread. As far as various builds? i would say builds are mostly about your trait/skill selection.

There is still no advantage in terms of killing monsters via spike dmg, in using another stat set.

hmm I did notice that traits had a drastic overhaul since I last played. Maybe that is the change I needed.

When I last played, berserker most definitely gave an advantage. Kill it faster than it can kill you. The way it scaled between the 3 stats was also just superior to how any other 3 stats scaled together.

Anyway, after reading a bit more on the trait overhaul and some other changes (LS Journal, Outfits, Ascended armor drops etc), I think I will give it a go.

Thanks for the response.

Berserker is still king in pve, nothing has changed. But you can still do a more supportive role and equip zerk, the support you do is not dependent of your stats. Like mesmers for example, you can trait for more reflection uptime, for more dps or for more phantasm dps, guardians can do lots of support with boons and consecrations, and it doesnt matter your gear stats for that.

not sure if i was clear, berserker is still the best damage. Its not as high damage as it was before, but its still the best.

However like the dude above me said, builds are more about traits/skills. What you can do, and how well you do it, is almost totally based on traits and skills.

Gear is, at this point, other than boon/condition duration sets, almost totally about how much risk you want to take versus dmg you want to do.

I know the feeling. I’ve recently come back as well, and severely disliked the Go Zerk or Go Home nature of the game. I was disappointed to find that not much has really changed, as far as mechanics.

What has changed is the player base. If you PUG, and you know the dungeons, nobody will really care what armor you’re wearing. It’s more important that you know how to do the fights, but even then I’ve forgotten a ton of stuff and nobody has said a word about it. People seem much nicer than they were. I think it’s because most of the impatient jerks quit playing.

Even WvW is nicer than it used to be, with much less trolling and rage in map chat.
