Thinking about starting up
I say give it a go. You’re mileage may vary when it comes to the amount of content, but I’ve never heard anyone complain that GW2 didn’t give them value for their money. So you can expect to get plenty of hours out of it. If you like the story, we’ve got Living World. There’s plenty you can solo, and for the things you can’t there’s the megaserver.
Even though you like to solo, I still recommend finding a decent guild, if nothing else for guild missions, but there is a lot of content that is simply more fun to do with others, because it requires at least some coordination.
Ah, there’s a ton of stuff to solo farm here. There are even people who solo dungeons for challenge.
I also suggest you forget about what the endgame has to offer at this point. Instead, enjoy the rich game world and the personal story. Take your time. Stop at dynamic events when there are some happening near you (and stick around for a while when they’re finished, they might continue into another DE), look around for hidden chests and jumping puzzles, talk to the NPCs, etc.
GW2’s game world is (IMO) the most beautiful and interesting game world ever created. Do not rush through it.
If you loved the hell out of GW1, you may not like it here. The total number of traits have been greatly reduced. I find PvE very relaxing but hard core players think it’s way too easy and they can’t exclude the less than hard core from the few activities where partying is required. Too many “casuals” for them.
WvW is interesting but for me it’s like playing at the same paint ball center week after week after week. The maps have been primarily the same since launch and because of that strategy is now quite fixed. And since they pair up teams based on their WvW rankings, at least on the top, you play against the same 2 of 3 or 4 other teams which makes it even more predictable.
But if you are looking for a PvE experience that at the moment is fairly co-op friendly, allowing to play at your own pace, for free after purchase, it’s a load better than true F2P games that try to get you to “subscribe via a VIP system” or nickle and dime you to death over “classes” and content.
RIP City of Heroes
if you want a game like gw1 you are out of luck there is nothing like it out there unfortunatly
I’m curious though, as a person who enjoys all content, from casual to hardcore PvE to PvP, is there a ton to do end game? Also, am I able to enjoy a lot of it solo, like solo farming things (an all-time favorite, don’t ask why), and when I want to, obviously group for everything I need to!
My input is this — this game has a ton of end game as long as you’re willing to engage in personal goal setting and you don’t need your end game defined for you.
There’s no easy to follow continually escalating gear treadmill. You need to set goals like full ascended armor, legendary weapons, gaining “Commander” for World vs. World, various titles, or high level fractals.
I think this game has one of the richest end game experiences of any MMO I’ve played (and I’ve played a lot). That being said, that’s because I have created my own end game goals. If you’re capable of doing that, you won’t be disappointed.
