This is GW from AN, not WoW from Bliz.. understand??
You are right. However, other MMO launches have proven that people leave with 1-2 months if they are not satisfied. I hope arena.net lots of success.
mhh what game are u playing that is so “different” than WoW? Vindictus? Minecraft? EvE?
I play GW2 and except for the WvW part, which is a DAoC “copy” its just a new “flavor” in the same old MMO fantasy genre, but guess thats the safe money bet these days…. or not pointing at EA/Bioware.
I also don’t like that they had to drop the core concepts of GW1 in favor for a more WoW/Warhammer like skill/trait system. Its more flexible than WoW, but i miss the GW1 system for PvP/WvW, compared to how many “real” combinations i get out of the current system. In short u still only have like 3-5 builds per class, with small variations. This feels more like Rift, with its multi tree system.
Maybe u define “different” um differently

“Different” has a definition and you are not allowed to change it, sorry. Surely other games like EVE are more so, but that in no way means that GW2 is not. Many aspects of GW2 are different from WoW. Not everything is a contest of extremism.

I would love a Dark Age of Camelot sequel. Warhammer Online was supposed to be it, but they dropped the bomb hard. The balance and bugs killed the game for many would be RvR players.
I see that guild wars 2 has some WvWvW, but I’ll be honest, the cost of pvp is too high for lower levels to join in on the fun.
It’s a bit OT but worth noting that today MoP is out but the servers are either FULL, HIGH and a few medium
On related note, this is the first WoW expac (that I am aware) that doesn’t have queues on launch day…
The problem with threads like this is they just tend to be flame baiting and the flamers lunge into action.
The title is inflammatory, and while I may agree with the intent I don’t think it really serves any purpose to post threads that lure trolls in.
Now about WvW being a copy of DAoCs RvR…laughable I must say. I can only imagine you didn’t play DAoC in the first 6 months when everyone was getting 1 shotted from range.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
the fights are different (not just your simple rinse repeat)
Stopped reading.
Come on, people have a right to be disappointed, without someone telling them that they don’t understand the game, or the company’s spirit in that matter. I enjoy this game, but not all the complainers are wrong, mainly those who cry out for bug fixes. Go tell them this is not Blizzard or whatever.
So the game is to be purely judged on how well the design team executed the design philosophy and compare it to its predecessor?
Pretty sure in any market with products, you (the consumer or the producer) also recognize what the competition is and what it’s offering. You can compare, but try to be objective. Yes, GW2 isn’t gonna fit the WoW-mold specifically because it has different aims through it’s design philosophy…. however, that doesn’t make GW2 immune to criticism when we recognize something good in WoW that GW2 could’ve adopted but didn’t because it “didn’t fit the design philosophy”; which may not have been a wise-choice.
Design philosophy is not fiat from the heavens that must be followed to the letter, it’s merely guiding principals and they can be wrong.
Not everything is a contest of extremism.
Thats why i prefer “flavor” over “different” as description, while i also use “WoW skin” for games like Rift/SWTOR. I would say EvE and Vindictus are different, since at least some core mechanics are changed drastically.

I agree on the trolls parts, but hey thats what we have those topics for!
Actually on DAoC i was a Beta2 tester and hell after this buggy mess going from beta2->3 i had enough of beta testing, so yes i was starting DAoC RvR kinda 6 months after the release.
Anyway i was more referring to the base concepts of a open mass PvP zone, with keeps, stat boni and siege warfare, which is missing in Rift/WoW/swtor.
Hey they even “copied” the low FPS/Lag problems in DAoC RvR to GW2 :p
Holly smokes did I just travel back in time. I think I read this back in 2006.
So instead a quote by Jack Handey!
“Too bad you can’t just grab a tree by the very tip-top and bend it clear over to the ground and then let it go, because I bet you’d be amazed at all the stuff that comes flying out.”
What I am saying is that many people came in here thinking this will be like WoW, so they expected the content to be the same or very similar. GW1 was so far from WoW it was like comparing apples to bricks. Point is, whatever your expectations (gold, dungeon difficulty, etc.) you can no longer think in WoW terms.
WoW fans are free to enjoy WoW, never said you couldn’t, but the contrast between both is prevalent in almost every aspect of the game. The very idea of original builds is a concept that Bliz. has never even considered, nor would even take the time to consider, “regardless” of the thousands upon thousands of requests to do as such!
(rinse repeat).
Didn’t mean to upset WoWites, but you must understand in every way, that this “Is Not” Wow, so it’s “you” guys that must stop doing the compassing when it comes to content or how it is played.
People who have played both know when you are making a comment requesting it be similar to WoW without even saying that is where your comparative is coming from. (Where’s the mounts, etc.)
I will say it one more time in case you didn’t understand, “This is not WoW, understand”?
Just on a personal end note I would like to say, GuildWars 1 was far better than WoW ever was for me, and now we arrive at GuildWars 2. I can’t wait until the next expansions to rock the very foundations of WoW. People who have never played GW 1 have absolutely no idea what you are in for and what ANet is capable of!
Mark my words, stick around, you won’t be sorry!
Doesn’t matter, Pandamania comes out today. If you want to play WoW it’s available to you, enjoy. I’m tired of WoW, so very tired, can’t bring myself to follow that rule set anymore. Thankfully this is a different rule set.
Asura Warrior
BlackGate
In truth I find the people who blurt out things like “It’s not WoW” to be far more disruptive than those who make innocent and sometimes (not always) naive comparisons.
I’ve been playing MMO’s for going on 14 years now and I wish to the heavens people would stop making such a big deal out of comparisons, so what if someone compares the latest MMO to the most successful MMO ever made, no need to get your knickers in a twist, it’s making mountains out of mole hills and will only ever end when people stop letting it get to them.

Me too. I played launch through Cata and I recall the rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth over how little content was actually added and many hated the changes made by that expansion.
I have not and will not purchase MoP because it really is going to be just more of the same……. GW2 is different and it’s better. AN is much more responsive to its players and, although GW2 is really good as it is, I expect it to get even bigger and better over time.
GW2 has been out 3 weeks. So chill, and worry not. Stick around and discover how the Masters create a truly epic game!
The masters? in my books that is a position/title that you have to earn, and respect should be earned as well.
As you point out, GW2 has been out for 1 month now, arenanet has not proven themselves at all at this point. Blizzard has had the #1 spot for over 7 years now, that is earning it. If anyone is to be called the masters, it has to be Blizzard, not arenanet, and that is objectively looking at this.
Now maybe GW2 will be the game everyone hopes it will become and they will take the throne, but that task is FAR from complete currently. Especially with Mists of Pandaria releasing today, arenanet is not out of the woods yet, they need to really work if they want to achieve #1 spot, because that spot still current, objectively, belongs to Blizzard.
Exactly Morkath…. people have to stop bemoaning how you can’t compare apples to oranges because comparisons in life are almost never apples to apples. We can argue semantics all day on what’s MMO and RPG and the whole alphabet soup, but the two games do have similarities…. maybe not much, or even at all by some people’s standards, but clearly there’s enough of a connection for people to compare the two as having relative strengths and weakness over one another.
That being said, there are things GW2 does better than WoW and vice-versa. Can those strengths of one game be incorporated into the other and vice-versa? If so (or not), then why?
Here’s a simple example that I think any GW2 person would say is a harmless addition to the game… WoW gives you notifications (you can even toggle them on/off I believe) for when friends and guildmates come online. Why doesn’t GW2 have this feature? Can it be put in?
Actually Bruno, if you want to get technical about it..
The only way someone knows that an apple is not an orange, is to compare the two objects and note the differences mentally and then come to the conclusion that they are two different things.
So comparisons between apples and oranges are not only valid, but they are vital and unavoidable.
People who say “cant/dont compare” are people who do not understand how to make an argument, they just want a “get my game out of the hot seat” free card, and no matter what, it wont get that.
… Yeah I’ll go with that Razamis
