This is not the apology we deserve
Betrayed is a strong word. Many people including me missed the event because of time zone differences but betrayed probably isn’t the correct word to use. It is indeed disappointing that the developers overlooked this possible issue when creating one time events and hopefully they’ll learn much from it. I’m enjoying the new content and for a F2P game, I’m very happy with this game still besides some issues.

Obtaining a precursor is a massively game changing occasion. And in one fell swoop they reduced countless players massive effort to obtain one into a joke, and countless other players got a hand out, while countless more were completely screwed out of even having the CHANCE to have this game-changing occasion occur for them.
This apology was practically a spit in the face.

“Guys, we really screwed up in a number of ways with that one time event. We realize now that it was an extremely unfair and broken way of distributing game-changing items, and we’re both very sorry and FIXING IT AS A TOP PRIORITY.”
Basically, all he DID say served only to paint a public picture of a dedicated developer who cares about player feedback. It was a PR stunt, not an apology, and I’m even more pissed off after reading it than I was before.

When this event launched I was at work. Really pisses me off that I’m punished for putting food on my table.
I was also at work… but I don’t feel punished, so much as disappointed that the opportunity to get the rewards was so limited (i.e. while I didn’t get anything from the event, I haven’t actually lost any of my in-game progress). I’m hoping that the limited timespan of events is something that will be addressed with future events however.
Mistake or not, there is nothing that can be done to “fix” it.
Let’s assume for a moment they did feel the exotic/precursor hand-out was a mistake. They can’t undo that, it’s already gone through the market, and the there is nothing that can be done. They can’t allow the entire player-base another chance at that, because it would ruin the economy completely.
They made a mistake with the precursors (I personally don’t feel the general exotics were a mistake), and hopefully it won’t happen again.

Yes, it’s a strong word and I think it’s not strong enough as of to express my frustration and as I can see on most of this forum and the rest of the web, theirs too.
I know about people on different time zones, etc … yet, they were not there, I and many others were there and invested time and time again jumping from bugged overflows to completed overflows and DC while at it and so on … betrayed, is not even close for me and I could say some others when not hearing a proper apology but a script and add to that the lack of interest in addressing the discontent and obvious lack of rewards, even thou we were there and got left out due to their fault.
I’m not saying I’m unhappy with the game, and that I don’t know it’s F2P, but there’s a commitment to the community that is an important goal to keep in mind if you want your community to participate in-game and economically as well.
This I believe will pass and I will continue to play and will perhaps give a look at a new event but the expectation will be gone … it will eventually pass and if everything goes as planned for ANet we will be happy campers again but this will always be a bad experience.

IF gear above exotic was purely cosmetic, would this even be an issue?
Man, the drama is just unreal sometimes.
Yes, especially since people have been getting lucky precursor drops from chests ever since release.
Different chests have different loot tables, but … the phenomenon of one guy grinding for hundreds of hours with magic-find gear and getting nothing, while some other dude gets Dawn out of his first level-80 chest is in no way new to this weekend’s event. It’s how the game has always worked.

That was an apology? No, I’m not being sarcastic – I mean, I don’t think it’s an apology – it’s just an acknowledgement of the feedbacks plus some state-of-the-game speech – which is mostly PR. :p
What I am thinking is that – with all threads about “one time event and timezone differences and how some players are unable to join” – it is not mentioned there. O_O

I also love the response about the exploiting the overflow server in order to get more loot, when one of the community managers posted that this wasn’t consider ‘exploiting’ then promptly closed the thread and it disappeared after that. It was blatantly exploiting and they just didn’t want to deal with it, I don’t care know because next events I’m going to do the same thing though, screw principals and conduct ~ it seems to get you no where in Tyria.

These threads are truly great examples of hyperbole. Anet needs to work out the kinks in their event systems and other aspects of the game. They need to continue to add systems and make the game progression yet progressive. It has the “potential” to be greta and we will not know if it hits the mark until we look back months or a year or two down the road.

I would imagine the answer to that is a “no”.

The problem is, we don’t know if this game has a year of life in it. Usually new MMos go through what is called “The Storm”, usually 3 – 9 months after launch, this is usually when core/hardcore players have hit the current cap, done all the current content and starting whining – this is also usually the time nerfs generally hit so player subscriptions start to decline, this period is when any MMo is very vulnerable – even games like WoW went through this back in late 2004/early 2005.
My personal advice to Anet/Developers/Ncsoft is simple ~ get back in the game, create content the 99% can finish, create gear the 99% can attain. Generally, you guys need to entertain the players that are consider the core-casuals because these are the players who tend the quit sinking ships first, once those types leave – the game is in serious trouble. If you start catering to hardcore players now, then this game will lose vast amounts of players which’ll force server merges, which in turn will detrimentally effect WvW and will see the game get ever close to sunset.

“Betrayed” is way too strong. The event was pretty buggy, but that’s hardly a betrayal – just mild incompetence in one stage of the design process. Hopefully they’ll work on that.
I didn’t like the one-time event aspect, (mostly because I wasn’t able to participate in the final stage) and I’m not too happy about the new gear grind.
All that adds up to no more than an annoyance, though.
The real problem with his “apology” is that he did not even address the main concern people have – tedious vertical progression. They completely destroyed their own manifesto and ANET refuses to admit it!
I see no reason for an apology. All they are trying to do is deliver fun content for us to enjoy. And that’s not easy, since there are so many players with so many tastes, and you can’t satisfy everyone. On top of that there are technical issues to tackle, which they obviously are working on. The huge lag-fest in Lion’s Arch for example, or the simply broken progression of various quests on many servers, making it impossible to complete some of the 2 day quests for many players.
I see no need to apologize for that, because its not like any of that was intentional. Just the knowledge that they are taking our comments to heart should be more than enough.

I really don’t think that ANet should give anybody an apology in concern to the one time event. They tried something new, and then released a survey about the event. It’s not that they did not care in this respect because they wanted your direct feedback.

Feels like it was beta with that survey.
I had no issues with event, apart from that fact it was boring as hell, but I still think they do need to apologizes for that mess.
If they apologize for the ‘mess’ then they would have to apologize for the game.

take it easy now, how many people do you know who got 2 precursors? Do you even know 1 person who got 3 or more?
Its not like everyone who took part got a precursor you had to be very lucky! In my whole guild only 1 dropped !
@ OP. Betrayed is defintiely the wrong word here, Arenanet didnt intent to cheat anyone much less betray anyone. Even an demanding an apology is taking things a bit too far imho. As far as I can tell the issues experianced were issues caused by the huge load caused by so many players taking part in the event. Thats not to say that they should just ignore the whole thing, they should strive to ensure it doesnt happen again which is exactly what they plan to do !
If people issued a public appology each time something they work on doesnt work 100% as intended everyone would be busy appologizing 24/7
maybe only when the game starts to really decline, then this moment will be remembered by the gaming history (and anet themselves of course) as the turning point of gw2
I don’t want a turning point or decline in GW2.
I just wana hear that a game I spent 60 dollars on will become enjoyable like it was the first 20 levels.

How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

Aaaaaand more hyperbole. Seriously, grab your paper bag, and settle down. Was Lost Shores a big bust? Yes, and they’ve pretty much acknowledged that with their PR-influenced word choices. I’m not a big fan of the fractals being the only method of obtaining ascended gear, but I haven’t seen any posts suggesting they move up the timetable to add such loot elsewhere in the game.
Worried about other dungeons becoming ghost towns due to the fractals? Tell the devs to add at least one set of ascended armor to each dungeon. Tell them to add in crafting recipes for armor/trinkets, and not just the forge. Yet, no one ever does this. People have been gnashing their teeth for over a week now and I can’t seem to find any decent, constructive posts. No, it’s just post after post of people screaming like they just found out their SO has been cheating on them.
So honestly, stop with this terrible hyperbole and go do something useful.
All of the posts I’ve seen on this forum and mine draws an infraction because I called the Internet generation entitlement minded and overly dramatic. I’m a 45 year old man and I feel like the lifeguard just blew his whistle at me
I just wish people would try to take things a little more in stride and let’s see what A-Net’s plans are.
The event was very poorly done. Each phase was plagued with bugs and performance problems. The apology addresses that.
The loot from the event, I think was appropriate. Looking at the market, ectos aren’t cheap, desirable runes still aren’t cheap. It feels really bad to some people who were in the market and didn’t see the signs, despite all the hints, that precursors were going to be made more accessible. I’m not a market player in GW2, but even I saw that coming.
What wasn’t fair was the way it was handled, with a single hour-wide opportunity to participate. I hope they rethink that, and go more like Mad King’s event style in the future.
It’s all about the self entitlement players have these days … Makes me sick. “Me, me me !” Titles like “We demand an apology” make the hair stand up on my neck. Zero appreciation, zero tolerance – These days players think they have full control over the game, with the average argument " We are the paying customers, we deserve it".
10 years ago, almost no one would have thrown a temper tantrum on the forums for an event like this.
The gaming community is not what it was before and it won’t be like that in a couple of years, either.
If people issued a public appology each time something they work on doesnt work 100% as intended everyone would be busy appologizing 24/7
I’m sorry, but I find this to be a bit ridiculous.
This wasn’t a situation where there were just a couple of kinks. It was a mess. It was all sorts of broken from start to finish.
I tried to participate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I was met with broken content each and every time. Due to this, there was practically nothing I was able to complete. This event was implemented in stunningly poor condition.
This is not a new studio, and this was not this team’s first rodeo. If something’s going to be only available for a (very) limited time, they should know by now that they have to make doubly-certain that it works.
The event was rolled out in an unplayable state, and a lot of time was wasted as a result. That is most assuredly something they should be apologizing for. And the lack of that apology has not gone unnoticed by me.

The event had two major and admitted flaws. One was technical, that due to culling, players literally could not see the enemies they were fighting, and were often disconnected and unable to get rewards after an hour-plus of engaging in the event. The other was the timed nature that meant that many thousands of dedicated players could not play. Your attempt to brand this as self-entitlement and a temper tantrum makes it clear you do not know what you are talking about. Your suggestion that there is something wrong with a customer expecting what they were sold is irrational.

This is exactly right.
I am curious why you feel you deserve an apology? Deserve is a pretty strong word, and is thrown around a lot these days.
Definition of DESERVE
transitive verb
: to be worthy of : merit <deserves another chance>
intransitive verb
: to be worthy, fit, or suitable for some reward or requital
Examples of DESERVE
<the team really deserved that victory after the way they played>I look at the definitions and I am not sure why we would deserve and apology. Maybe it would be better to say this is not the apology that I would like. It sounds a lot less combative and entitled.
Maybe Anet made some mistake, I don’t think they did. However, it is a computer game and is not on such a serious level as is being implied by a lot of people on these forums.

That actually is an entitlement though. Your argument is along the lines of “I bought a ticket to a game, but I missed it because I got called into work, so logically they should have stopped and replayed the game again because I wasn’t there.” Very few things work that way and to expect otherwise is to be entitled.
An event, by its nature, typically excludes those who can’t make it. That’s why it’s an event and not a regular feature. To expect that you’re entitled to attend the event is an entitlement no matter how you look at it – though the OP thinking they deserve an apology is moreso. One would be nice, and honestly gracious of them, but in no way deserved.
Do I think they should make some kind of arrangements for players in awkward time zones? Definitely. Do I think those people deserve an apology and are right to give ANet the level of grief that players have been dumping on them? Not even a little.
It was FREE CONTENT, no one owes you an apology…
Honestly, seen so many opinions and different view is good as we all have our opinions, still you forget the simple fact that whether or not is Free, or words used are “Strong” or self entitlement rage comments are but the result of something promised and not delivered and thus a broken promise.
Still, I believe the game does deserve a second chance, but I also believe that what was said is not enough and that unfortunately nothing is done about it as compensation, which is deserved as I did comply with my end of the bargain as many others did, but ANet did not came through … I don’t care about the gear, I have one 80 with no gear and no finish quest for Zaithan and many many alts … I wanted a Tittle, the experience of been there … that’s what I wanted.
But enough of this, I wasn’t looking for community support but thanks for those who did and thanks for those who share their comments and points of view, some made me laugh, some others simply got me to think of Cave Trolls and so on … it’s always good to speak your mind so never stop doing it, thanks everyone for your opinions.
I just simply wanted to leave a feedback in the Event Feedback Thread, this was moved out of it, because it was archived … funny, it’s still there on the sticky notes someone should remove it from there …
I believe that nothing will be done, whether I think it should or not, and more things will come, still want this tittle, still think it was poorly handle, still think what was said was not enough and still feel like I need more time to get over this awful experience and get back to the game I love and enjoyed in the past … enough of this.
If this can be close, please do so. If I can do so, please let me know in a non troll format.
Thanks.
Apologizing? Why does Anet need to apologize to you people for? They haven’t done anything wrong. They gave you content you screamed for then you bashed them to no end.. They gave you a freakin dungeon that will continue to challenge you then you bash them to no end.. Pathetic!
There’s a fatal flaw in your reasoning: Just because you could get a special item in this one-time event does NOT mean you will never be able to get one again.
Consider the possibility (one of many avenues they could take) that they are intending to do one-time events often, perhaps several times per year. In fact, given that this one occurred only weeks after Halloween and that they obviously had the survey prepared in advance, this seems like a very good possibility.
“There’s a fatal flaw in your reasoning…”
I wonder if Einstein said the same thing while on the Manhattan project…
It’s not the apology you deserve, but it’s the one you need right now.

What you’re not considering is the lag / disconnects, even to some extent the missing phase 2 NPCs were all probably due to the sheer number of participants not because the events themselves were buggy!
The NPCs I am not so sure about, I suspect the problem with them disappearing was that they were never supposed to die, that they were supposed to go down to x health then stop taking damage but probably the huge amount of people attacking them at the same time + lag ended up dealing more then x damage at the same time resulting in their death before the cutoff point got reached!
in anycase true the result had a huge consiquence, as in many people cut off the game and the event itself largly unplayable but the only issue was arenanet inabbility to handle the load nothing else. Its like saying engineering building a plane but when the time comes to travel it turns out there is an issue with the wheels. end result everyone is grounded but you cant say the engineers did a really bad job they made a small mistake!
Not saying they shouldnt do better, obviously ideally it should be flawless just saying its not fair to say they messed up from start to finish when from their side they just didnt manage to handle one thing which is the load!
This is not the apology we deserve from ANet? I’ve seen plenty of qqing in forums before, but man-alive this takes the cake in recent memory.
My suggestions to ANet:
I really like the idea of the special events.
Run them for a whole week. I have to work so I can eat so I can play this game.
Start on Saturday late morning for the Euro and North America servers separately. End the events the following Sunday in the evening. This gives the players in both locations the opportunity to play the event for an equal amount of time. Heck, you could even have the events last for 10 days if you want to keep people interested and if you have the staff to make the events a bit longer.
There is a bunch of controversy about the new armor set. Make it findable/craftable/purchasable through other means than pure grinding.
We can keep this game fresh and give everyone a fair shake at the events and at the new armor sets.
